Breathtaking
wel200514 June 2021
It's not easy to escape the clichés when talking about crime and drug trafficking in Rio de Janeiro. We see the sensuality and rawness of funk balls, guns, swear words, cocaine lines, sex, but Dom offers much more than that. The story revolves around the relationship between Dom and his father, who does everything to save the boy predestined to a tragic life. The two are on opposite sides: the father on the side of law and responsibility and the son with two feet rooted in marginality and vice.

A breathtaking series, with 8 electrifying chapters of a lot of drama, humor, action and reenactment of an exquisite period, the highlight, at the end, is the direction of actors. Gabriel Leone and Pedro Lima at the front. Director Breno Silveira is an ace, he knows how to extract emotion from actors like no one else.

Another quality of the series is the contextualization of the Carioca environment in the 60s and 70s, showing the beginning of drug sales in the favelas and police corruption, including in the military sphere, during the dictatorship, with a general dealing weapons for the bandits, protected by dome.

A super-production like that is not common in Brazil.

Dom Season 1
IPyaarCinema16 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Review By Kamal K

Directed by Breno Silveira and Vicente Kubrusly, the eight episodic Brazilian series revolves around a father who never really gives up on his son who is a drug addict. The protagonist Pedro (Gabriel Leone), a handsome boy from Rio de Janeiro's middle class is introduced to cocaine in his teen years, putting him on the path to becoming the leader of a criminal gang that dominated the tabloids in Rio De Janeiro in the early 2000s. His father Victor Dantas (Flávio Tolezani) is an undercover policeman and has spent his entire life fighting hard to eradicate the drug mafia from his city. Victor's life turns upside down when his own son starts snorting drugs at an early age.

The opening shot of the first episode shows Pedro high on drugs at a funk party in a favela, a shantytown on the outskirts of a city that's unpredictably dangerous and remains high risk given the presence of violence and drug mafias. His father is worried for his son who hasn't returned home and goes to the favela looking for him. However, Pedro is an aggressive young teenager who is tough to handle.

Throughout the series, Pedro is portrayed as an adrenaline junkie and playboy with blond hair and blue eyes. He enjoys taking risks and being in dangerous situations. He is shown to develop this tendency since his childhood days when he spends most of his time with his friend Lico. Lico and Dom share a special bond with each other and the one that involves drugs. Even as an adult, they spend a lot of time together and this ultimately leads to Dom heading a gang of housebreakers who mainly loot the affluent. It all happens when Pedro meets a girl who goes on to become his crime partner and they all start minting big money.

While every episode is an hour long, the two central characters - Pedro and Victor - are shown to have a unique complexity. Most father-son scenes consist of arguments and fights, but one does eventually realise that all those disputes come from a loving relationship that is going through immense turbulence and chaos.

Based on a true story, the suspense drama not only gives insight into the world of drugs but also weaves in familial conflict and how Pedro's drug addiction causes his family a lot of pain and suffering. In spite of making multiple attempts to stay clean, Pedro finds it quite challenging to stay away from cocaine and damaging company. In one of the episodes, he is seen writing a letter to Victor saying that if he had the chance to change anything at all, he would change his past and try to love and respect his father like a normal son would.

A heady mix of drugs, nudity, violence and drama, the series beautifully blends the past with the present. It simultaneously narrates Victor's journey from being a teenager who loves diving to an agent who works undercover to uncover the drug mafias and stop the import of drugs in Brazil. He later reports it to the authorities and ends up joining the police intelligence service. The parallel narrative structure engages the viewer by highlighting the striking contrast between Pedro's and Victor's lives. It shows how the father and the son moved in opposite directions, marked by their own choices, and favelas coincidentally played an important role in both cases. Commendable story flow and direction keep you glued throughout.

The series definitely has some fine actors. Leone and Tolezani are at their natural best and bring in the required zeal to their individual characters. When it comes to Tolezani playing the father to a drug addict, he beautifully portrays feelings of anger and frustration that a parent goes through on witnessing their child taking the wrong route in life. He is seen feeling strong-willed yet helpless, hopeful yet hopeless.

Since the series actually draws from a real incident that made it to Brazilian newspapers back in the 2000s, the plot arouses a lot of curiosity. The series is definitely worth an evening of binge watching if you are someone who enjoys action, suspense and family drama in equal measures.

Gritty new drugs and family drama from Brazil
paul-allaer4 June 2021
"Dom" (2021 release; 8 episodes running between 51 and 64 min. Each) is a new TV mini-series from Brazil. As Episode 1 "Kids Don't Come With Instructions" opens, it is "Rio De Janeiro 1999" and Pedro, an 18 yr. Old is at a rave party in a favela, making out with a girl while snorting coke. His dad, Victor, who is with Rio's civil police with a lifetime of fighting drugs-related crime, gets wind of it, and he goes into the favela, looking for his son... At this point we are less than 10 min. Into the opening episode.

Couple of comments: this is a gritty TV-series from Brazil that Amazon has optioned for its Prime and Instant Video platforms. I quite liked the opening episode, which goes back between the "now" (being Rio 1999) and the "then" (being Rio 1970) as we get to know Victor as a young man and how he became to be a cop. This TV series is very Brazilian and hence may not be as easy to be enjoyed here in the US as compared to, say, The Wire (just to name another drugs and crime TV show). After having seen the opening episode, I'm already looking forward to checking out the remaining episodes.

Please note: the series 3 min. Trailer that I watched before Episode 1 was shown as dubbed (meaning English voices dubbed over the Brazilian actors), much to my dislike. I absolutely detest dubbing foreign films and TV series for US viewing. I looked into it, and was able to rectify the situation, so I watched Episode 1 in its original Portuguese version with English subtitles. (Just to give you an idea: Amazon gives you 15 different audio languages to choose from, and 33 different language subtitles.)

Not the truth story
joao-bonjean9 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This Pedro was the terror of the city of Rio de Janeiro, he was killed in ambush of the police when he was hidden in a north side of the city. So only part of the story was true. All his robbery had a high dose of violence. So the series is only part of true story.

This was not DOM
bernardoaraujo5 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Ok, so I know this was inspired only by a true story, but to turn Pedro DOM in a character whose robbery wete not violent oriented and build him as someone to try to captivate the audience is a serious mistake.

Pedro DOM's original burglar and invasions wete marked by violence, usually armed with a grenade, psychological torture of his victims, and to turn audience simpathy towards hum may be a good appeal, but for victims and criminal point of view seems just wrong.

The series is overall well constructed and have a great narrative, but this really destoryed the series for me, unfortunately.

Brazilian MASTERPIECE
joaogmachadogomes7 June 2021
The story is super engaging, deals with a great issue of brazilian and specifically of carioca society, shows the hipocrisy and inefficacy of the war on drugs and the fact that there is no right or wrong side, heroes and villains, as in almost everything in life (just humans clueless about what they're doing and commiting big mistakes trying to make things right and amend for their past sins). It's narrative arcar is super well built... In short, one of the thrillers based on a true story! Pure action!

I tried
gsater-3997811 June 2021
I watched it all... Pros are good cinematography, OK acting and production values.

Cons are the world's worst dubbing.(I tried without it also), silly responses by characters to situations they find themselves in,and I found NO empathy for anyone. May be due to cultural differences but DOM is not for me.

7/10 Good plot, good acting, nice to see the favela in two different time periods and the war on drugs.
Hellooo123432117 June 2021
Very good plot, based on a true story, exceptional acting especially Gabriel Leone who plays Pedro Dom. Pedro Dom the head character is intelligent, grew up with his family outside of the favela, but he's hungry for more and doesn't know fear, due to something missing in his brain. He's comes from a good family, but is attracted to the favela. His best friend is from the favela and from a young age they start using drugs and Dom lives for adrenaline. Than when he gets older he proceeds to being a criminal and with his tactics robs houses and basically he and his gang mates (women and males) are all greedy, they want more money, more sex and more drugs.

The series also is about the father that cares for his son (Pedro Dom) and tries to help him get off drugs. You'll also see the father when he was younger and gets dragged into a secret mission as a diver and after that goes undercover in the favela in the 1970's and becomes close to a drugslord. You basically see the war on drugs and the father is part of that.

Overall, it's a good series and a big bonus is also the behind the scenes videos on Amazon prime, so you'll understand the story and characters better.

Entertaining and exciting!
Guanche4817 April 2023
This review is based on season 1 and 2. Good series in general, but without a doubt the first season stands out, it is the best!! The second season seemed too unrealistic and somewhat heavier to me.

The story is very well told and edited and the action is fantastic, all the actors in general seem very good to me. I do not recommend it to anyone under 18 years of age, and even so, I would think about it, it is quite strong, a looot of drugs and violence.

The series almost falls into a mini soap opera environment at times, but not entirely because the story between Pedro Dom and his family must be told in detail, especially the relationship with his father. So..This mini soap staff didn't bother me, and the exciting moments of action, chases and tension exceed the familiar and necessary dialogues, especially at the beginning of the first episode, .... give the series the chance it deserves!!

I must also highlight the photography of the beautiful beaches of Brazil, they give us that necessary break between scenes and transport us to the atmosphere of vacations on the beach.

I especially recommend the first season, very exciting and beautiful story, a great combination!

At the end of the first episode I couldn't start the next.

Just didn't care. The characters are wooden and predictable.

The writing is almost interesting but not quite.

Amazing
robsonlins8 June 2021
A great adaptation inspired by the real story of Pedro Dom. The script was carefully put together for you to get to know in depth the history of the beginning of cocaine in Brazil, showing how society works, endemic corruption, hypocrisy, racism that still lingers in society Brazilian and especially the unconditional love between the father and his son. Dom manages to make us root for crook and cop at the same time. We take the adrenaline and drama of families with drug addicts.

A well-written and directed Testimony
dinalewis-3623711 June 2021
What a deep and abiding testimonial of real life, real issues, drugs, sex, family, responsibility...and all the things we make choices about that directly effect our lives and the lives of our individual family members.

It was VERY well written and directed.

Thank you for doing a great job telling this family's story-even if it is loosely-based- the message, the struggle, the love, the dedication, the defeat... is loud and clear.

Thank you!

Utter waste of time !
mercury-5731412 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This story is all about complicated and utter non-sense script. A teenager gets addicted to drugs and the story pretty much revolves around it throughout. I doubt if it is even a true story.

A child starts snorting at age of like 12 yrs and becomes an addict until forever. His father tries to clean him again and again, but all goes in vain. Pedro becomes even more intensely addicted to it.

Story starts with drugs ....revolves around drugs.....finally end with drugs. It is drugs, drugs and drugs nothing more.
