Forbidden Science -- Review
jonathanruano8 June 2009
Warning: Spoilers
There seems to be a new development in the soft-core pornography industry. Perhaps, porn producers (like John Quin), writers and directors have realized that if the softcore pornography is to have any hope of competing with hardcore pornography, then the former must be more entertaining than anything produced in previous years. As a result, we have softcore porn films that are very different and far more interesting than anything seen in the 1980s or 1990s.

One example of this new wave of softcore films was Co-ed Confidential which successfully combined comedy with pornography, with the result that you had genuine laughs between each sex scene. Another recent example was the under-appreciated series Forbidden Science. Forbidden Science, in many respects, is the most ambitious softcore series I have ever seen. In the beginning, it seems to be a series about Stephanie White (played by the beautiful Vanessa Broze) who is murdered by her husband and then returned to life as a clone, renamed Julia White, by the corporation 4ever -- and that is not all. She seems to have been one of the leaders in the company and possesses information, relating to new memory chip technology, that makes her uniquely valuable to 4ever.

But just when we figured that out, new sub-plots and more mysteries appear in the series. It is almost as though we reach the point where we think we know everything and then suddenly there is a new development, a new complication. A mysterious explosion that cannot be traced. A strange liaison with an android. Unexpected murders. The fact that we are not quite sure what to make of Collin Sommers (played with surprising effectiveness by Levi Freeman), who may or may not be leading the company; who appears as some sort of charismatic and overly confident corporate hero in the beginning, but then turns out to be far more complicated than we originally thought.

With a plot like this, some may wonder why the series did not get a higher rating. The reason is that many of the sex scenes get in the way of the plot. The characters sometimes have sex at the most unlikely moments. For example, there is a scene where a kidnapper is pointing a gun at Julia White and orders her to find out what her former professor knows. Instead of helping them, Julia has virtual sex with her former professor and tells them nothing, which is something that probably would never happen in a kidnapping situation. On other occasions, a particular episode becomes so cluttered with sex scenes that we end up waiting impatiently for them to end so that we can get back to the story. To be sure, softcore pornography is all about sex; that's its raison d'etre. But with a plot as interesting as the one in Forbidden Science, excessive sexploitation spoils things.

Lastly, most of the performances are not as strong as they should be. Some of the episodes sound a bit too soapish to be taken seriously, especially those by the female cast. Levi Freeman is really the best thing in this series and without him it probably would not have held up as well as it did. The other women, however, are for the most part pretty faces.

In short, Forbidden Science is hugely ambitious and has tremendous potential, but ultimately it falls short of achieving greatness because it lacks (with some exceptions) a cast to convey this complex material, but also because it cannot quite balance sex with its fascinating science fiction premise.

softcore with sci-fi aspirations
SnoopyStyle29 December 2017
It's the near tomorrow. Michael White recently lost his wife Stephanie. He hires 4Ever Innovations to clone her and implant with her memories. Bethany Montrose is the new sales rep for the company. Colin Sommers is an executive. Dr. Penny Serling is the quirky head tech. Stephanie had actually invented a new chip to capture memories and was killed by her husband who is cheating with another woman. He is looking to steal the chip for himself. Bethany comes to Stephanie's rescue and Michael is killed. The clone with new name Julia White and the revolutionary chip joins 4Ever. Religious zealots are protesting their cloning work.

This is Cinemax trying to do softcore with a sci-fi story. As far as the softcore goes, the girls are pretty and they show off their bodies. There are the prerequisite sex scenes. It's not rocket science and it works as 00's softcore. The sci-fi aspiration is another matter. Apparently, this future company does it all. They do cloning, memory transplant, and advanced VR. The story is trying too much. I don't know who the writers are but I doubt that they've done anything more than porno. The basic metric is that half the time is taken up with sex scene and these half hour episodes have even less time for the plot. The premise needs to be simplified, not complicated. It could keep it just the cloning and that's plenty to digest in this format. As for the acting, the girl are pretty good ... for nude models and strippers. The wacky tech might be useful in a real show. I wouldn't ask most of them to do any real acting. I give them a point for higher aspiration even if they don't achieve it.

episode 2

A good quality series apparently due to the involvement of John Quinn who made quality soft core for Playboy. The problem with it is the same as when I have the occasion to see a John Quinn Playboy movie on cable/dish: the best part of the movie was left on the cutting room floor. This is pay cable "After Dark" not the Sci-fi Network, although it has always been a good subject for a soft X movie or series. Even though the standards now are little more tolerant of explicitness then they were in the past (internet), the nudity here seems rather sparse and over cautious. A rerun of the old episode "Love Street" on another network at about the same time seemed to be a hotter. These "After Dark" shows would be better if they uptight standards were relaxed a little and when they no longer gave one a sense of over editing of what is the shows strongest attraction.

I have only 2 words for you, UTTER RUBBISH

Warning: Spoilers
This is the most horrible tripe I have ever come across. It's merely a way to show straight sex (with the odd lesbian scene for good measure) on prime time. There is bugger-all story with the plot thinner Hugh Heffner's hair. Some of the actors are vaguely attractive but if this garbage isn't canceled, I'll eat my own tongue! I don't think I can bear another episode without tying my intestines around my own throat and strangling myself. If watching some Luke warm acting with half baked badly written dialogue is your idea of heaven then look no further. I thought I had seen everything until the lab girl makes herself a couple of clones to have sex with. Still, at least grunting is the same no matter how bad the actor. I am 4 eps into this crap and still don't know what the story is about. People get murdered, and some other idiots are seen to be protesting the making of clones. Thats about it really. That and some rubbish sex scenes.

Fast forward to the interesting bits, the credits!

I personely at first was inconfortable whit the woman showing off the breast but for the past x years i aked myself why its wrong for woman in shows to show off there breast but its ok for man to show it off, i know for a afct woman get turn on looking at man chest so does man get turn on looking at woman chest so it should be ok but when they show the sex scene i thin there just tryng to fill up the empty space in this show, the acting its not great but hey there tv acor and actress and the special effect remind me of tv shows from the 90s but i kind of like it, make me rember the tv show ANdromeda witch the effect sucked but i still enjoyed that show and this show and what i love soo far its that they like 97% of the time did not show soo far and hopefully never a lesbian scene. its too bad it cutted short, would have liked to see more story and on the subjec of cloning because whit freidns we have been talking about its migh be a good idea to clone meat so we can eat whitotut killing a animal and cloning organes so pepol do not have to wait in hope someone else die and its the right match or die becuase theres is no match.
