2014 has been yet another fantastic year for television, one that continued the nichification of the medium, with highly specific and underrepresented voices breaking through in every genre. There was a comedy explosion, particularly on cable, with dozens of new series presenting confident first seasons and several returning shows reaching new heights. The dramas didn’t disappoint either, with visionary creators bringing new life to familiar settings and taking greater risks with their returning series, deepening their worlds. Throughout the year, directors and cinematographers brought lush visuals, composers pushed the auditory envelope, and an astonishing number of actors gave fantastic, memorable performances. More than a few shows delivered spectacle on a weekly basis, while others went small, deriving incredible power out of stillness and self-reflection. Some series swept the audience up, week in and week out, and others built subtly, only showing their hand in their season’s final episodes. There...

The digital age has changed television dramatically within the past two decades. With the advent of cable channels, home video media, dish on demand and the internet, the average TV viewer has a variety of venues to access television programs. With all these ways to access television shows, the viewing audience has become more aware of repetitive story lines, inconsistency in character development and continuity errors. In short, these advances in technology have made for a more sophisticated casual television viewer, therefore allowing for the progression of serialized storytelling.
Today’s television writers have a landscape to develop complex narratives beyond the limitations of the episodic format, and now that audiences have better accessibility to these shows, there is a higher demand for serialized storytelling where there wasn’t one before.
Although there have been many television shows that have contributed to the overall progression of the modern serialized television series,...

On Friday afternoon, we'll talk with Andy Daly about his latest job rating life itself on the new Comedy Central series "Review." Join us for our live chat on May 16, at noon Pt/3:00pm Et on Gold Derby's home page. -Break- Watch our exclusive chats with Megan Boone, Merritt Wever, and more! Daly, a recent Gold Derby Emmy Mvp, plays Forrest MacNeil, who accepts every review assignment given to him – from drug addiction, to racism, to divorce – and rates them on his patented five-star scale. The series, which is a hard-to-categorize blend of sketch comedy and dark sitcom, is adapted from the Australian series "Review with Myles Barlow," which ran for two seasons from 2008 to 2010. But "Review" isn't the only project keeping Daly busy these days. The ubiquitous comedian has been seen recently on "Modern Family," "Silicon Valley," "Drunk History," "Eastboun..."'...

It's hard to know quite what to make of Review, and that's part of its fascination. Adapted by Eastbound & Down's Andy Daly from the similarly slippery Australian series Review with Myles Barlow, it's one of those shows you have to take figuratively, not literally. Its hero is a critic named Forrest MacNeil (Daly), who reviews experiences and sensations rather than books, films, music, and the like. Viewers of Forrest's TV show write in to suggest new subjects, and he promptly leaves the soundstage and embarks upon a mission to learn what it feels like to be a racist or an armed robber, or to make a sex tape, or to sleep with a celebrity. That might sound like the description of a series that's willing to do anything for a laugh, and Review does hover on the edge of shamelessness at all times, as if creating a more buttoned-down, scripted...

Amercian cable channel Comedy Central has greenlit a pilot adaptation of ABC series Review with Myles Barlow, as reported by Deadline. As in the local series, the half-hour show will be a parody of the traditional review show, with MacNeil rating life experiences, including divorce, the effects of murder and anonymous sex, out of five stars. The U.S version of the format will be called Review with Forrest MacNeil and will star stand up comedian Andrew Daly in the title role. Daly will also co-write and executive produce alongside Bowling for Columbine producer, Charlie Siskel. To date, two seasons of Review with Myles Barlow have aired on ABC, in 2008 and 2010 respectively. Comedy Central has given a pilot order to Review With Forrest MacNeil, a half-hour comedy written and executive produced by Charlie Siskel (Tosh.0) and Andrew Daly and starring Daly as the title character. Based on the Australian series Review With Myles Barlow created by and starring Phil Lloyd, the project is a send-up of traditional review shows but instead of films, food or art, Forrest MacNeil reviews difficult life experiences … by living them. He reviews whatever his TV audience throws at him: the adrenaline rush of stealing, the drama of divorce, the effects of murder, the wonder of anonymous sex. And he rates every adventure on a scale of zero to five stars. Forrest’s unwavering commitment to his work often comes at the expense of his wife, his children, his affable neighbor Gary and his co-workers. Daly, repped by CAA and Principato-Young, recently wrapped the upcoming season of HBO’s Eastbound & Down.

Animal Kingdom producer Liz Watts has made her TV series debut with the black comedy Laid. Aravind Balasubramaniam reports from the set in Sydney.
Set to debut on ABC1 on February 9, Laid is the brainchild of Marieke Hardy and Kirsty Fisher. Its death-related premise – about Roo, a young woman (Alison Bell) whose previous sexual partners begin to mysteriously die off, making her think she’s cursed – provides the black comedic tone to the series.
Inspiration came to Hardy from a story she saw in the newspaper, about “a handsome boy” around her age, who died while during a holiday.
“I started to imagine, what if I had dated him and it ended up being a horrible relationship, would I be supposed to attend his funeral? What are your responsibilities to the ex lovers you had a very bad time with?” explained Hardy. “It wasn’t really about a fascination with death,...

It was a big night for David Michôd’s Animal Kingdom and Jane Campion’s Bright Star at the 2010 Samsung Mobile AFI Industry Awards last night, with three statues each. Glenn Dunks reports.
The first of the AFI Awards ceremonies rewarded the technical crafts and behind-the-scenes players in a gala hosted by actor Shane Jacobson.
Opening with speeches by AFI Chief Executive Officer Damian Trewhalla and the Deputy Lord Mayor of Melbourne Susan Riley as well as a musical performance by Claire Bowditch, the night was also filled with some great material from Jacobson.
Animal Kingdom took out the night’s big prize of the Member’s Choice Award and is the odds on favourite to reap far bigger rewards at tonight’s major ceremony. Bright Star could pose a threat, however, after it’s big haul including two for Janet Patterson (Best Production Design, Best Costume Design),who wasn’t at the ceremony.

Remember that one year (2001) when the list-happy AFI (American Film Institute) decided to compete with the Globes and the Oscars in year end prizes? No, that didn't last long. But there's another AFI, The Australian Film Institute, that has been around for a long time and is in no such danger of being a one-off. This year, they're all about the amazing family crime drama Animal Kingdom which they awarded with a record breaking 18 nominations. Sure, the film is in danger of being way overhyped for people who are coming to it late (which is just about everyone given the sorry state of international distribution for dramas of virtually any kind) but for those who can slough off the "omg" raves, I guarantee you'll think it at least an insinuating and well executed crime drama.

Actor, writer and director Anthony Hayes has many nicknames.
While "Tony" or "Hayes" are obvious, he's also been called "the John Turturro of Australian acting" given his tendency to nail standout supporting roles and the fact that filmmakers tend to offer him roles they have earmarked for him, rather than audition him. Luis Guzman could be another comparison.
His roles playing bearded, mulleted, working-class criminal types have spawned a moniker: "The King of Western Grit" -- and his most hardcore fans have created an online shrine as a homage to this idea.
Nominated for four Australian Film Institute awards and winner of two, he's played bogans and crims, soldiers and cops; in David Ceasar's Prime Mover he played three separate roles, and in his most recent work on the box -- in the dark black satirical comedy series Review with Myles Barlow -- he played himself, albeit a mad drug-dealing criminal version.
