low budget
jokkorokko1 November 2022
Lucky to get 3 stars, must have been made in a garage. I think if your looking for a really good story with a high quality finish you will be happy to skip this one. On a journey to Mars to set up an android colony, android Nova is given a program to mimic human emotions. She struggles to understand and express her feelings to her human crew mates, but another android on board rallies the rest to mutiny against their human masters. Just put that in to fill in the required minimum. The sci-fi flick has difficulty choosing a narrative and struggles to create a world. Do yopurself a favour and skip it.

Respect for making it but it needs actual acting and costume design.
haildarklord22 November 2022
The lead character is Abilene Lamb meaning Grassy Meadow Lamb. But his real name is Chase Pollock which is Chasing Fish. It's just SO dry to watch. The acting is REALLY terrible. Luckily these are supposed to be androids but even a robot in our time has simulated emotions. The character outfits are not even plausible for a crew on a present day shuttle or station. (SERIOUSLY Abilene wearing a white lab coat but also a black cowboy hat with that name? Why not make him spit and speak in a slack jawed southern accent?) The fake eyelashes killed all sense of reality (besides the dry acting). I honestly felt like I was pranked into watching a student film off YouTube but under the heading "a serious Movie." I couldn't finish it. My advice is stick to making YouTube videos and it will look average there. But even on YouTube you'd see more effects and acting.

Fun Fact: Most of the cast are named after places, objects, or things.

The movie crew tried, but not nearly hard enough
kirachloe13 October 2023
Not completely bad, just not good enough to recommend. As usual when this happens the script let everyone down.

So a few good things. I think the acting crew wanted to make a go, and some appeared to have certain talent, but the staging was horrid.

For a low budget film they tried to the best they could for scenery and costumes, I will give them that. I might have even overlooked the incredibly thin. But come on, get a clue. Some of it was so bad you should have added 'comedy' to the genre of the movie (simple example, can the women's lashes be any longer?).

I tried to be nice but I have to mention the completely abysmal script and scripting. I don't care how desperate the crew was to be in 'something', this was one you should have turned down.

A few (or maybe more than a few) tweaks and this could have ben a 3 star production. But not now.

Low budget but thought provoking.

What happens when robots begin to feel? Should we nip that in the bud? Or allow them to flourish? What happens when they start to learn things that they weren't necessarily programmed to do? How dangerous is that?

Yes, this film is extremely low budget, but I think it's worth a watch if you want to see one possible outcome to these questions. If you just want action, go watch something else.

The actors aren't very good, but considering the majority of the cast are robots...not sure you can judge that.

Ok. I have to get the costumes off my chest. The fem bots. Literally. The female robots have big hair held in place by a huge barrette. And eye lashes that are so big... maybe they double as antenna?

The kid did the best acting.
webhead-9755326 October 2023
Poor acting, poor choice of cast, poor script, poor dialog. Looks like a student film. The kid did the best acting.

The long eyelashes looked silly, but are needed to distinguish the androids (the 'Uncanny valley').

During the dance with Nova and Abilene, the conversation suggests that Nova volunteered for the mission and Abilene followed. If an android can volunteer, that goes against the premise that androids have no freedom.

Poor acting, poor choice of cast, poor script, poor dialog. Looks like a student film. The kid did the best acting.

Cereberally Refreshing Asimovian Delight

I love a good Science Fiction thriller and this one fit the bill nicely. Thematically it was actually really very refreshing and I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie and can consider it fun for the whole family. It had characters of all ages so everybody in my home had one or more people or android we could easily relate to. The subject content were many and varied from trivial to life threatening. It was a very realistic view of the present we're living to the near future were anticipating. It gave us a lot to talk about afterwords and was very well thought out. Kudos to the writer/director. My family feels we gave it a very realistic rating.

Despite low budget I stayed interested
SynechdocheNewJersey13 November 2023
To be completely honest, I did consider turning it off after a few minutes. But as the film progressed I did not mind the acting style. In fact, it started to provoke feelings. I really do not know why, but I did get pulled into this film.

The plot is cliche, but there is something I cannot put my finger on. I just wanted to keep watching. It might be that the illustration of the moral dilemmas facing the crew is so clear and highlighted. Maybe it is because there is not much else to focus on. Either way it works. I found myself getting emotionally involved in the characters in ways that even star studded casts have failed.

I don't know if my experience is unique or not, but I like this film.

More than you think in this one
buffaloproductionsllc8 February 2023
Unfortunately some are quick to make assumptions after watching the trailer and not the whole film. There is a reason the androids are dressed the way they are. The first were made by a teenage boy. The next round are made by the androids themselves and are quite diverse. In fact the background and styling are obviously intentionally 60's adaptations. The actors do a great job of showing a gradual acquisition of emotions as the program implanted evolves them. Clearly this was missed by some reviewers and some only watched the trailer so they did not pick up on all that's in this layered film. Not every film needs to be 100 million dollar franchise budget films. What makes this film rewarding is the story.

Cool Indie Near Future Sci-fi
jcairns-468-2922829 April 2024
Enjoyable independent sci-fi film with a compelling narrative about a small crew composed of humans and humanoid robots en route to the Mars colony. Was pleasantly surprised that despite the low budget, the production quality was high enough and consistent throughout the film to keep me captivated. The acting is okay, my favorite actor being the one who played the ship's captain, but also the woman who played the titular character had me forgetting she was human. Also the film handled the challenge of having a young child actress quite well and she did a great job in her role.

All in all a technically solid and fun indie film.

Great indie sci-fi
scowden-148106 December 2022
The storyline, if you pay attention, is about the relationships between an android and those around her. The main character and her "sister" were built by a teenaged robotic genius. He made them to look like a teenager would. The next two were made by androids and they look much different naturally. The storyline isn't in you face obvious. It is thought provoking about what happens when androids begin to feel? How do we treat them? How do they handle it? That's what's interesting about this film. The acting is well done if you realize the story. And the ending is perfect. Not all sunshine but not all gloom. Well done indie film.

Androids that feel
kalanipark5 February 2024
The film was very entertaining and thought provoking. Androids that go beyond being just robots. It had a very diverse cast which In this case was a fantastic choice. Nova is an android who has a connection with Abilenes (I think that's how you spell it). The solar flares were interesting. Eventually you get to a point where you're not sure who was human or who was a robot. The set was well done. I wonder though if the captain and crew ever make it to Mars. Will there be a sequel? If so I would like to see it explore what happens with the robots and Mars itself and how they explore that idea. It was a fun film.

Movie Nova
d_capell195322 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This was a very entertaining movie for the whole family. It had a very diverse cast which I loved. Nova was a very sweet android . I loved her and Abilenes connection. It was very exciting at times during the solar flares. I hated that Doc died and felt so sorry for his daughter. At times I wasn't sure who was human or who was android. The set was amazing . Loved the little girls part and her taking care of the plants and doing ballet like it was normal. I would like to have known if the captain and crew ever make it to Mars. Will there be a sequel? The male android wasn't around long enough . It was great.

A sci-fi drama with something to say on a shoestring budget
No matter the budget, it's a miracle if you can get a film made and worth it if you have something to say. Nova attempts to ask questions about how we treat our own creations, especially at moments of crisis when the choices only become tougher along the way. Aside from the scenes of peril that offer excitement, Nova works best when it leans on its dramatic aspects, most notably with Lelia Anastasia. Her performance as the Captain leading a doomed ship lends authenticity and dimension to a character with both nobility and bias- especially against the AI of the film- played with haunting understatement in the case of Juliet Chevelle's title character. For a shoestring budgeted sci fi film, it's nice to see that it concerns itself with drama between characters and allowing the performances to be the film's greatest special effect.

Great vision from director/writer Dana Cowden
robertstarnes-9328813 March 2024
I thought the storyline was great and the characters showed what director/writer Dana Cowden wanted to be seen. This is something new to SyFi and I thought it was a great movie. I believe for an Indie film, the acting was spot on. I felt the chemistry between the actors and their characters was believable. There is enough in the storyline and plot for a family to enjoy together. It is a movie I think many connect with, in the direction our world is going these days. There is a male android, played by Sai Peña, that could have been more involved in the story. Even though his part was not long, it was affective.
