Bollywood actress Kalki Koechlin and filmmaker Anurag Kashyap married in 2011 and parted ways in 2015. The duo met on the sets of Anurag’s film Dev D, which also marked Kalki’s Bollywood debut opposite Abhay Deol in 2008. Let’s look back at the time when Kalki opened up about the dark phase of her life.

In an interview with Puja Talwar, Kalki revealed that the first few years after separation were difficult. The actress said, “It takes time. There is no denying that in the first few years after our divorce, we couldn’t be the kind of friends that we are today. We needed that separate time because it hurts to know about the other person’s relationship and things like that. So, of course, we took that time. I definitely took a lot of therapy, and now it’s been seven or eight years.

Anurag Kashyap’s Dev. D Clocks 16 Years
Image
In Dev.D , Anurag Kashyap at last shed his obstinate inaccessibility as a filmmaker. More a homage to Sanjay Leela Bhansali than litterateur Saratchandra Chatterjee’s Devdas, Kashyap’s Dev.D is that deep liberating, lascivious, luscious, provocative, tantalizing, and tragic view of tragic hedonism, ruinous self-indulgence, and vain miscommunication that Saratchandra barely thought about but couldn’t articulate.

Fiery, unforgettably unstoppable in her self-worth…Paro, now transposed to Punjab, knows her Devdas just got back from England and wants some quality sex.

As determined as ever, she cycles to the nearest sugarcane fields with a bulky bedroll tied to the carrier and spreads it out for her foreign-returned lover-boy…That image of the super-determined Paro cycling to sex in the fields, compounded with that brilliantly shot sequence where she explodes her bitterness, frustration, and anger by pressing down on a handpump as though it were a….never mind qualify as two...

Anurag Kashyap Rips Indian Studio System at Toronto Iffsa Masterclass: ‘I Have a Massive Problem With Authority and Authority Has Problems With Me’
Image
Celebrated Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap was in vintage free, frank and forthright form at a masterclass in Toronto on Sunday.

“I have a massive problem with authority and authority has problems with me,” was one of the many nuggets from Kashyap, whose very first film “Paanch” (2003) was banned in India and whose subsequent work has been the subject of domestic scrutiny while being celebrated both at home and globally.

Kashyap’s cop noir “Kennedy,” which had its world premiere at Cannes earlier this year, is on an extended festival run. It opened the 12th edition of Bmo International Film Festival of South Asia (Iffsa), where he delivered the masterclass. Kashyap was in conversation with festival patron, acclaimed filmmaker Anup Singh (“The Song of Scorpions”). Unlike masterclasses that look back at the filmmaker’s oeuvre, Singh chose instead to look at the broad themes that have informed Kashyap’s work over...

The audience may love Anurag Kashyap’s two-part magnum opus ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ but Anurag, the poster boy of independent films, “hates” it.

The auteur recently graced the Cannes premiere of his film ‘Kennedy’ where it received an 8-minute standing ovation.

He told Brut India: “It was really overwhelming, it’s my first film at Theatre Lumiere with 2,500 people appreciating the film. The numbers were more than the entire audience that saw my last film ‘Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat’. I broke that entire record in one screening.”

Film Review: Dev. D (2009) by Anurag Kashyap
Image
“Devdas,” the 1917 novella by Bengali author Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, is one of the most commonly adapted stories in Indian cinema, and the tale's star-crossed romance and harsh critique of contemporary social mores have served as an influence for countless books and films. By the time then up-and-coming auteur Anurag Kashyap began conceiving his own take on “Devdas,” there had been at least fifteen movies directly or indirectly based on the novel, and the wildly popular Shah Rukh Khan version had recently been released in 2002. Not wanting to merely copy what came before, Kashyap decided to alter the story to reflect 21st-century social issues. This resulted in 2009's “Dev. Abhay Deol: Bollywood producers don’t have money, talent to do what Ott does
Image
Mumbai, Feb 25: Bollywood producers neither have the money nor talent to cater to audiences who want something beyond the popular and the mainstream, claims actor Abhay Deol. In this context, he notes that Ott platforms have emerged as a good space for independent filmmakers and budding actors to showcase talent.

"Ott platforms are a limited space for content, not at the mercy of physical multiplexes and single screen cinemas that usually get taken over by bigger movies, bigger studio films and producers that don't allow space for newer ideas and talent to be exhibited. While the Ott platforms have to make popular cinema as they should, they have the ability to cater to those who want something outside of the popular and the mainstream. Only they can do that. Bollywood producers can't do that. They don't have the money or even the talent to do that," explains Abhay matter-of-factly.

Mahie Gill: Pressure of delivering hits is scary for bigger actors
Image
Actress Mahie Gill feels that she is not very marketable, and adds that the pressure of delivering hits is surely scary for bigger actors.

"I say this about myself, I am not very marketable in the sense that I can run a movie on my shoulders," Mahie told Ians, adding: "This scare is more for bigger actors. It is scary for these actors. It is scary for these people."

Mahie seems to have to secured a position among actors for whom performance matters more than the box office pressure. "If your film doesn't work but if you are appreciated as an actor you keep getting work," she pointed out.

Mahie made her debut in Bollywood in 2003 with "Hawayein" but she became a familiar face playing a new-age Paro in Anurag Kashyap's 2009 release, "Dev.D". Her notable Bollywood roles have been in "Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster", "Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns...

Anurag Kashyap
Film Review: Choked: Paisa Bolta Hai (2020) by Anurag Kashyap
Anurag Kashyap
By Arijit Paul

Anurag Kashyap, the “angry young man” of Hindi cinema, whose creative genius envisioned works like “Gangs of Wasseypur“, “Dev D” and “Ugly” has always made films that are a warcry- a rebel with a cause to detract from the joie de vivre of Bollywood. Each of his films are decked upon another, a tryst with a dark caricature of the subaltern milieu, anchored at the helm by contemporary politics and violence. In an interview, Kashyap describes his latest endeavour “Choked: Paisa Bolta Hai” as a Sai Paranjpye thriller. Descriptions and definitions apart, it is starkly liberating from the Kashyap-esque tradition of filmmaking in terms of its storytelling and critique. As is his wont to stand ground against the establishment, Kashyap barters the nuances of a refined story for a more didactically inclined narrative.

The opening shot is of a man walking briskly up a staircase with an attache case,...

Life got ruined with Gangs of Wasseypur, says Kashyap
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap says when "Gangs Of Wasseypur" released on this day seven years ago, his life got "ruined".

June 22, 2012 was when the first instalment of the two-part "Gangs of Wasseypur" released. It is a cult film that revolves around a gangster who clashes with a ruthless, coal-mining kingpin.

"Seven years back is exactly when my life got ruined. Since then all everyone wants me to do is the same thing over and over again. Whereas I have only been unsuccessfully trying to get away from that expectation. Anyways hope that 'Saadhe Saati' is over by the end of 2019," Kashyap tweeted on Saturday.

"Gangs Of Wasseypur", based on a real life story, was loved by the masses for its rawness. It had managed to collecte Rs 10 crore in the opening weekend.

The gang war drama based in Wasseypur in Dhanbad district, Jharkhand, featured Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Piyush Mishra and Richa Chadha.

Abhay Deol talks about censorship on digital platforms
Actor Abhay Deol, who has made his digital debut with "Chopsticks", feels censorship on the over-the-top (Ott) platforms would be a "futile exercise". He finds it baffling how sexuality is considered more offensive than violence as far as the Ott content is concerned.

In May, the a three-judge Bench of the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Centre while hearing a petition seeking framing of guidelines to regulate the functioning of online media streaming platforms, like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

Asked about censorship on digital platforms, Abhay told the publication, "It's a futile exercise. If you have to be thorough in censoring content, you would have to censor the Internet. What you get to see in our films, you can see far worse than that online. If you see a naked woman's body in a film, you can see pornography too."

The 43-year-old actor, who opened the floodgates...

Mukkabaaz (The Brawler) review – Bollywood boxing epic takes on caste injustice
Vineet Kumar Singh stars as a low-caste boxer fighting for respect in Anurag Kashyap’s heavy-hitting social critique

An eclectic run of credits – bizarre psychothriller No Smoking (2007), Devdas update Dev D (2009), crime diptych Gangs of Wasseypur (2012) – have established writer-director-producer Anurag Kashyap as Hindi cinema’s foremost moderniser. He took a beating on Cotton Club-like period folly Bombay Velvet (2015), but his latest, Mukkabaaz (The Brawler) is a canny comeback bid: a heavy-hitting social critique disguised as a rock ’em-sock ’em sports movie. It follows the attempts of angry lower-caste boxer Shravan (Vineet Kumar Singh) to claw back personal and professional satisfaction after walloping the well-connected coach whose mute niece the boxer was wooing.

Kashyap’s own struggles to stay mobile within a stiflingly regulated, sometimes rigged system never seem very far from the surface. This film-maker’s preference for no-holds-barred realism over the prevailing comforts of melodrama manifests in characters who spit and curse,...
