I had the chance to see Lucy James, Part 1 this past summer and it really worked some magic on me. I feel like Carson's aesthetic is assured and mature, especially for such a young filmmaker. Aspects of it reminded me strongly of Gus Van Sant's work: beautiful, meandering camera-work with a lot of intimate, quirky moments. Strong cast of unknowns. Whole thing is filmed in this great rural Ontario hotel. Largely unstructured plot. And yes, I dare say, better than Rachel Getting Married. My only question is, does the title imply there is going to be a second film? And if so, when's it coming? I will keep my eyes open.
