Back in July, it was announced that Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road) was signing on to star in a survival thriller called Apex for the Netflix streaming service, with Baltasar Kormákur (Contraband) on board to direct the film from a screenplay by Jeremy Robbins, who earned writing credits on many episodes of the TV series The Purge (set in the world of the Blumhouse film franchise). Now, The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Theron is being joined in the cast by Taron Egerton, whose credits include Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and Rocketman.

A genre movie that has been described as “Free Solo meets Silence of the Lambs,” Apex will see Theron taking on the role of a rock climber and adrenaline junkie who finds out that nature isn’t the only dangerous element out to get her when she sets out on an expedition in the wild.

Jeremy Robbins wrote the script, which Netflix picked up as spec project, before bringing on board Theron and Kormákur (Everest, Adrift).

Theron is producing the feature along with Dawn Olmstead, Beth Kono and Aj Dix via their recently-launched Secret Menu banner. Other producers include Ian Bryce; and Chernin Entertainment’s Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and David Ready.

In an official post, Electronic Arts has announced that it has blocked Linux Os access to Apex Legends, stating that “a small number of Apex players” will be impacted by this move. EA strongly believes that the openness of the Linux operating system makes things easier for hackers and cheaters. Since the studio is struggling to fight this problem, it has entirely cut access.

Today, Dynamite Entertainment officially announced Thundercats: Apex, which will be written by Ed Brisson and drawn by Rapha Lobosco. Spinning out of the end of the forthcoming Thundercats #8, the one-shot shines the spotlight on Apex. Writer Brisson explained that while Apex is a new character, he is integral to Thundercats lore, although he did not explain.

Dynamites Thundercats title debuted earlier this year to critical acclaim and record-busting sales, thanks in part to its ability to break new ground while simultaneously honoring what came before. Now, in the forthcoming Thundercats #8, Apex arrives, shrouded in mystery and looking mega cool at the same time.

Thundercats editor Nate Cosby unveiled Declan Shalveys designs for Apex in a post on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Cosby prefaces the designs by declaring Apex an all-new character, but does not reveal anymore. Cosby gives shoutouts to Shalvey, calling him a maestro. Shalveys designs for Apex paint a foreboding picture, as a hood obscures his features. Apex carries an imposing staff, complete with a cat's head.

Baltasar Kormákur was in a reflective mood at the Taormina Film Festival, where his romantic drama Touch had its Italian premiere this past week. The Icelandic filmmaker compared Touch to his first feature, 2000’s 101 Reykjavik. The former was “a black comedy about love,” while Touch is “a way more sincere approach to love and life,” he said.

Touch, which has just become the biggest film of the year in Iceland at $569,600, is based on Ólafur Jóhann Ólafsson’s bestselling 2021 novel Snerting. It wouldn’t be surprising to see it become the Icelandic entry for the International Feature Oscar race this year — Kormákur already has repped his home country four times, making the shortlist with 2012’s The Deep.

The multi-hyphenate, who for years has worked across Iceland and Hollywood, told Deadline that he sparked to Touch’s source material immediately but only later realized he had a particular connection to the story.

Exclusive: Chernin Entertainment has launched development on Tomato Can, a new boxing film scripted by Michael Brandt (3:10 to Yuma), from his and Jamie Foxx’s original idea.

Details as to the plot of the film are under wraps. Chernin Entertainment will produce alongside Foxxhole Productions’ Foxx and Datari Turner.

A veteran screenwriter, director, and producer, Brandt is well known for scripting 3:10 to Yuma, the Academy Award-nominated Western actioner from director James Mangold, which starred Russell Crowe, Christian Bale and Ben Foster. The co-writer and executive producer of Lionsgate’s recent Mark Wahlberg pic Arthur the King, Brandt also previously co-wrote the tentpoles Wanted and 2 Fast 2 Furious. In television, he’s best known for creating NBC’s Chicago Fire, as well as writing and exec producing each of the Chicago franchise’s other three hit series, with credits on over 650 episodes.

If a new report’s accurate, then Apple Studios is in the process of spending a quite sinister amount of money on its forthcoming Formula 1 movie.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski and starring Brad Pitt, the film doesn’t currently have an official title – the word was that it was called Apex, also the name of a 2021 Bruce Willis action flick, though that hasn’t been confirmed so far.

What it does have, though, is an absolutely enormous budget; according to Puck, as picked up by World of Reel, the spend so far has breached the $300m mark.
