Global superstar Jung Kook, K-pop group Stray Kids, DJ Steve Aoki and singer Charli Xcx are among the artists named to this year’s Gold House A100 List. Dev Patel, Jason Momoa, Olivia Rodrigo and James Wan are the entertainers topping Gold House’s A100 list of the most influential Asian Pacifics across culture for 2024.
Annually released on the first day of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month since 2018, this year’s A100 also includes Keanu Reeves, Hayao Miyazaki, BTS member Jung Kook, Academy president Janet Yang and — in a sign of the relative plenitude of Api-fronted content today — key creatives and cast members from Avatar: The Last Airbender, 3 Body Problem, Past Lives, One Piece, Expats, Elemental, Shōgun and The Sympathizer.
“This year was special: Asian Pacific leaders had a record number of records broken while building a more inclusive tomorrow for all, particularly in new avenues like AI,” Gold House CEO Bing Chen and COO Jeremy Tran said in a joint statement. “Gold House is honored to celebrate so many new and established leaders who are committed to both equity and excellence.

Update: Disney has shared an image of Jeff Bridges taking a look at the Tron: Ares script, and that can be seen at the bottom of this article.
The original article follows:
The long-awaited third entry in the Tron franchise is finally in production. Six years after it was first announced that Jared Leto was in talks to star in a Tron project called Tron: Ares, the movie was all set to start filming last August – but then it had to wait out the writers and actors strikes. With those strikes over, filming is finally underway. Earlier today, we heard a quote from cast member Cameron Monaghan (Gotham), who said this film will “really push forward what can be done, from a visual perspective.” Now, we have another quote about the movie – and this is the one that every Tron fan has been waiting to hear. A quote that confirms...

Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans all star in Materialists, the next film from Oscar-nominated Past Lives director Celine Song. Filming’s now underway in New York.
Given writer-director Celine Song’s elegant 2023 romance Past Lives was nominated for two Oscars – including Best Picture – it’s little surprise that trendy production company A24 was keen to work with her again.
Song’s follow-up movie is somewhat different in tone from her debut, and much starrier: in here we have Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and the phenomenally busy Pedro Pascal. According to the Film & Television Industry Alliance’s production list, filming was due to start in New York on the 15th May; there are now reports, however, that the shoot has already begun.
World of Reel has spotted a couple tweets that appear to confirm this, with one even showing Dakota Johnson on location in Manhattan. Here’s one now:...

Jeff Bridges is getting digitized once again. The actor revealed that he will be returning for “Tron: Ares,” the third “Tron” movie set for release in 2015 and will star Jared Leto.
Bridges revealed the news on the Film Comment podcast on Friday, saying that he headed out over the weekend to film a part for the threequel and was even anxious about working with an actor like Leto.
“Jared Leto is the star of this third one. I’m really anxious to work with him. I’ve admired his work,” Bridges said.
Bridges reprised his role as Kevin Flynn in 2010’s “Tron: Legacy” after he first appeared in the groundbreaking 1982 video-game movie. “Legacy” aimed to push another technical visual effects boundary by de-aging his character, with Bridges playing himself and his younger avatar. Despite the parallels between both films, screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes did not mine much from his own life to write “Challengers” in the same way his wife Celine Song did for her Oscar-nominated film “Past Lives.”
“‘Challengers’ is a pure fantasy for me,” Kuritzkes recently told IndieWire over Zoom. Having gotten hooked into obsessively watching tennis after the infamous 2018 U.S. Open match between Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka, he added that “‘Challengers’ really came out of this desire to have information about the matches I was watching. It was really something that I think a lot of people who watch tennis do, which is that you transpose a personality onto the player from these little crumbs that you’re given. It’s what tennis commentators do all the time. They see somebody make a little motion or something, and they go, ‘Here’s what he’s thinking. Here’s what...

Sad tear-jerker movies are something we all need in the moments of sorrow and pain to release all our negative emotions crying alongside the characters. They get even more tearful when complicated or even impossible romantic relationships are featured, like in Ryan Gosling’s The Notebook (2004) and Anne Hathaway’s One Day (2011).
These films obviously inspired last year’s drama that takes romantic struggle to a whole other level. It focuses on the relationship of the two childhood friends, Nora and Hae Sung, who get separated by Nora’s emigration from South Korea.
A decade later, they try to reconcile via Skype calls, however, this attempt fails due to the personalities’ differences that developed during that time. Another decade later, they contact one more time, and this time Hae Sung intends to visit Nora in New York.
You can already guess how many essential issues this movie raises: the themes of emigration,...

Among the actors, around whom there is not so much hype, Colin Farrell obviously stands out, as he’s a jack of all trades. It’s proven by his brilliant performances in the dark comedies Seven Psychopaths (2012) and The Lobster (2015), thriller series True Detective (2015) and the 2022 drama hit, The Banshees of Inisherin.
There is a movie, however, that even better demonstrates how great the actor’s dramatical talent is. Its plot revolves around a loving husband and father Jake, played by Farrell, who all of a sudden finds his son becoming weak and unresponsive.
However, it turns out it’s not their real son, but rather an android, who assists the family’s adoptive Chinese daughter Mika. Jake does all he ever can to repair the android, playing such a significant role in Mika’s growing up and exploring the world around her.

You may not know Justin Kuritzkes by name, but there's a strong chance you've seen his face before. The playwright turned screenwriter behind director Luca Guadagnino's steamy tennis drama "Challengers" rocketed to internet fame thanks to his viral 2011 YouTube fantasy skit "Potion Seller." That he went from speaking to himself in silly voices while distorting his face on his computer to penning scripts for the filmmaker behind "Call Me By Your Name" is truly the type of career trajectory the rest of us can only dream about.
In another twist that might not pass the smell test if you tried to turn his story into a film, Kuritzkes is married to Celine Song, the writer and director behind only one of the best movies of 2023, "Past Lives." Even setting that aside, it's easy to spot the parallels between Song's hit and "Challengers." Both films follow the same set of...

Since the tremendous commercial success of the film “Crazy Rich Asians” in 2018, there has been a gradual increase in the number of pictures being produced in America that depict the lives of its Asian citizens. This trend allows for the presentation of the experiences of this over 20 million-strong group of people to a broad audience. Such portrayal can be seen in “Smoking Tigers”, a full-length debut by So Young Shelly Yo. The movie, made by a first-generation Korean-American director, screenwriter, and editor from California, was praised by critics and received several awards, including for the Best Performance, the Best Screenplay, and the Nora Ephron Award at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Vashon Film Institute has set the date for the third annual Vashon Island Film Festival, which is slated to take place Aug. 8-11. The announcement comes with the launch of two new divisions of the Vashon Film Institute and a new donation arm, which accepts restricted funds to be used solely to fund improvements at the Vashon Theatre.
Vfi’s new divisions are the Quartermaster Lab, a collective of filmmaking programs, and VFIpresents, its sales, distribution and release division, which will also focus on organizing community events outside Viff.
“The quintessential goal in founding Vfi was to support independent filmmaking in the Pacific Northwest,” said Mark Mathias Sayre, founder of Vashon Film Institute. “To that end, Viff has already brought compelling indie features and documentaries to local audiences and will continue to do so. Five full weeks after the Oscars, the Writers Guild of America finally got around to giving out its awards. Oscar winner Cord Jefferson (“American Fiction”) won the original screenplay prize while David Hemingson (“The Holdovers”) picked up the adapted screenplay trophy; he had lost at the Oscars to “Anatomy of a Fall,” which was ineligible here.
Three other scripts deemed ineligible by the WGA went on to win Oscars in the past decade: “Birdman” (2015; original), “The Father” (2021; adapted), and “Belfast” (2022; original). During that time, 68 of the WGA Awards nominees numbered among the 100 screenplays that reaped Oscar bids.
Two other Oscar contenders — “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest” — were ruled out of the running by the guild before nominations were announced way back on Feb. 21. David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.
The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

With the 2024 Oscars and the 2023 Emmys firmly in the rearview mirror, the film and TV awards calendar is all but ready to return to normalcy after last years Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupted the first half of award season. The last major event to be impacted by the altered schedule is today’s WGA Awards, which took place in an unusual post-Oscars slot after the strikes forced the guild to delay its voting process. As most of Hollywood looks ahead to the 2024 film and TV slate, today’s concurrent ceremonies in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium and New York City’s Edison Ballroom gave award watchers one last chance to celebrate the best screenwriting of 2023.

‘Succession’ has gone out with one final bang: The HBO drama won two Writers Guild of America Awards on Sunday night — the most of any series — for best drama series and also for best drama episode. Creator Jesse Armstrong was on hand in New York to accept the award, while several of the show’s writers were also in LA to accept the honor.

It’s almost too good to be true. Could cinema be witnessing the birth of a stunning new mixed doubles partnership? Last year, Korean-Canadian film-maker Celine Song gave us her wonderful, Oscar-nominated debut film Past Lives, a personal love-triangle movie about a South Korean woman in the US, married to a white American writer, poignantly reconnecting with her Korean childhood sweetheart; the fictional writer, incidentally, has a novel out called Boner. Now Song’s actual white American husband Justin Kuritzkes has written this love-triangle movie, an uproarious screwball dramedy of straight sex and queer tennis: one player, incidentally, is renowned for his large penis.
Some day, film school courses will be devoted to parallel-textual analyses of these two films, and maybe the legendary third wheel...

In Luca Guadagnino’s latest cinematic endeavor, “Challengers,” Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist form a dynamic, throuple-esque trio, each delivering performances that scream Oscar-worthy. The real question is, will Academy voters look beyond the palpable sexual chemistry to acknowledge the film’s artistic merit? That’s a challenge for the marketing maestros.
Penned by newcomer Justin Kuritzkes, the spouse of “Past Lives” writer-director Celine Song, “Challengers” weaves through a 13-year narrative, chronicling the life of Tashi Duncan (Zendaya), a tennis wunderkind-turned-coach, who hatches a plan for her husband Art’s (Faist) comeback. The plan pits him against his ex-buddy and Tashi’s former flame, Patrick (O’Connor), setting the stage for a dramatic unraveling.

Initially set for a grand reveal at the 80th Venice International Film Festival, its premiere was thwarted by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. The delay prompts the question: could Zendaya have joined the best actress fray,...

Michael O’Leary, the new president and CEO of the National Association of Theater Owners, is encouraging Hollywood to think smaller.
Don’t get him wrong — he loves Marvel, “Mission: Impossible” and “Fast & Furious” as much as the next exhibitor. But O’Leary is urging the major studios to prioritize more than just the tentpole properties that prop up the box office. Those mega-budgeted films are great, of course, but he believes that a “variety of movies that appeal to moviegoers is critical” to the survival of the box office.
“It is not enough to rely solely on blockbusters — we must have a strong and vibrant market for movies with smaller or medium-sized budgets,” he said on Tuesday morning at CinemaCon, the exhibition trade show held annually in Las Vegas. He pointed to last year’s offerings of Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning literary satire “American Fiction,” romantic drama “Past Lives...

It’s going to take a live action version of “Moana” a little longer to swim to shore than Disney first expected. The film, originally slated to open in 2025, has been pushed back to July 10, 2026.
That news came as part of a deluge of Disney release date announcements and shifting debuts. The studio revealed that its upcoming “Star Wars” movie, “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” as well as “Toy Story 5,” will hit theaters in 2026, giving Disney a formidable collection of potential blockbusters.
“The Mandalorian & Grogu,” a cinematic spinoff of the hit Disney+ series “The Mandalorian” will open May 22, 2026, while “Toy Story 5” will debut June 19, 2026. Chicago – In one of the more unusual film releases of late, Caleb Landry Jones and Jojo T. Gibbs are the feature lead actors in “Dogman,” opening in Chicago on March 29th and wider on April 5th. Written and directed by Luc Besson (“The Fifth Element’), the film defies convention in a story that is multi-faceted and symbolic.
The DogMan is Doug (Caleb Landry Jones) and as the movie begins we see him busted by New Jersey law enforcement, where they find several dogs in his truck, and he’s also in drag as Marilyn Monroe. Wanting to get into his motivations, they put their psychiatrist Evelyn (Jojo T. Gibbs) on the case, and she begins to unravel the DogMan’s life, which includes childhood abuse, paralysis and Shakespeare. He also has a psychic connection to the dogs he keeps, using them as an army to protect and do break-ins for him.

Locally-produced horror-drama “Exhuma” held on to top spot at the South Korea cinema box office for a fifth consecutive weekend.
Its complete dominance of the market kept “Exhuma” comfortably ahead of the holdover “Dune 2” and a couple of lower-powered new releases and allowed its running total to surpass 10 million ticket sales. That is the conventional measure of a blockbuster in Korea, a country with a population of roughly 50 million.
Over the latest weekend “Exhuma” sold 618,000 tickets for a gross revenue of $4.56 million and a market share of 56%, according to data from Kobis, the database operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic).
The latest increment gives the film a total of $73.4 million earned from 10.2 million admissions. While that landmark was achieved by five films in 2019, it has only been passed four times since the beginning of the Covid pandemic. And while “Exhuma” still has a long way to catch “12.12: The Day...

In 2024, could there be sure a thing as a “hip film studio” that would attract both filmmakers and adventurous filmgoers despite the subject matter or “creatives”? From the intense internet “buzz” the answer is a big yes. A century ago it was those Warner Brothers with their urban crime thrillers (before expanding into swashbucklers and tearjerkers). And there are those studios that specialize in a genre as Blumhouse does with horror and the Marvel Studios with their comics properties. Perhaps the last time a studio inspired nearly blind loyalty may have been in the early 90s with Miramax, which introduced us to, among many, Kevin Smith and Quentin Tarantino before one of the founders started the spark that became “Me Too”. Today it is A24, which grabbed the top six Oscars a year ago. Last week saw the release of Love Lies Bleeding. From that quirky crime noir/love story...

One more video recap to enjoy as a last look back at the movies of 2023. Vietnamese film critic Nguyên Lê has revealed his Cinema Montage 2023 video, featuring a look at his Top 25 Best Films from last year (+ 2 extras). Oppenheimer won the Academy Award for Best Picture a few weeks ago, ending the 2023 awards season. Though that doesn't mean we can't still continue to celebrate all the great movies from last year. His video features many of my personal 2023 favorites as well, including: A Thousand and One, American Fiction, Godzilla: Minus One, Past Lives, Perfect Days, The Promised Land, and The Taste of Things. Plus other underrated gems like Polite Society, Sleep, Monster, Knock at the Cabin, Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell, and Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. The video comes in under 3 minutes and is a wonderfully short and sweet reminder of all the beauty cinema offers us every year.

Oscar-winning films were denied a theatrical victory lap, grossing less than $1 million total last weekend. They found gold at home, where titles like “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” ranked high on both VOD and on streaming.
Two $19.99 PVOD titles lead the VOD charts. “Anyone but You” (Sony) remains #1 at iTunes and Google, while the just-released “Madame Web” is #1 at Fandango. “Anyone” is #5 at Fandango, while “Madame Web,” released last Friday, has yet to be listed at Google Play, which always lags a few days.
Oscar titles otherwise dominated. Five films, all with rentals between $4.99 and $6.99 (and all but one also streaming), took 12 of 30 positions on three VOD charts. “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” (Searchlight) swept the field.
On two charts were winners “American Fiction” (Amazon MGM), “Anatomy of a Fall” (Neon), and “The Zone of Interest” (A24). “The Beekeeper” (Amazon MGM), still at $19.99, and “Wonka” (WB), now reduced to $5.99, round out the...

The South Korean box office had a familiar look. Dark drama, “Exhuma” dominated the chart with a more than 50% market share for the fourth weekend in a row. And, for the third successive weekend, “Dune 2” placed second.
“Exhuma,” about two shaman, a feng shui master and a mortician who attempt to reverse the mysterious events happening to a U.S.-based Korean family, earned $5.80 million between Friday and Sunday. That represented a 67% share of the overall box office market, according to data from tracking service Kobis, operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic).
That lifted the film’s haul to $67.3 million after nearly four weeks on release. The figure is the highest this year by far and the fourth highest performance since the beginning of the Covid pandemic.

Alice & Jack is the latest TV love story that spans several years. The Masterpiece on PBS series premieres on March 17 and follows the 15-year relationship between the haunted, thorny Alice (Andrea Riseborough) and quirky, sensitive Jack (Domhnall Gleeson). Sounds a lot like One Day, right? Well, Alice & Jack feels like the moody and jaded older sister in the enduring love stories family. One Day and Past Lives give off serious middle-child energy with all that yearning and Love, Rosie is the whimsical, funny youngest kid. Meanwhile, This Is Us is both mom and dad. There’s not a bit of rom-com in Alice & Jack, and that’s a good thing. It’s messy and raw. Alice...

Yearning can be a difficult feeling to capture on-screen. Love stories are little without a tragic element, and defining the spaces in between moments of romantic reverie can be a challenge for even the best filmmakers and the most dedicated actors. Yun Su-ik and leading performers Han So-hee and Han Hae-in have taken a surprisingly unconventional approach to a tale of young love with “Heavy Snow”, a slight but cutting series of snapshots of a brief high-school fling that has long-lasting ramifications.
Heavy Snow is screening at BFI Flare
Han Hae-in is Su-an, an acting-major loner living in a small coastal town, introduced by wielding a loaded paintball gun as part of her performance in drama class. When performing Shakespeare, she resembles less of a traditional Hamlet and more of a school shooter, keeping her classmates on the backfoot as she alienates them with her extreme commitment to her version of a classic role.

If “Past Lives” asks what it means to move on, “Mimang” asks what it means to linger. In Kim Tae-yang's melancholic debut feature, “Mimang” follows three encounters, starring a film curator (Lee Myung-ha) and an artist (Ha Seong-guk) as they walk through the centuries-old streets of center Seoul in different points of time of their lives. Together, along with some others, they reflect upon all that had passed, and all that could have been.

Nitza Wilon and Elizabeth Kaiden are the founders of The Writers Lab, a screenplay development program for women over 40.
Where are the stories by and about women of experience, GenX women, women over 40 — your mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, exes, employees, employers? Women who continue to be systematically shut out of the conversation, silenced at our collective water cooler: film and TV.
At the Oscars on Sunday night, the winners were once again predominantly men of all ages, followed by women in their twenties and thirties. Fresh from his Academy Award win for best actor, “Oppenheimer” star Cillian Murphy now has a chance to claim the same honor at his local awards.
The Irish Film and TV Academy (IFTA) has unveiled the nominees for its 2024 awards, with Murphy going up against “Saltburn’s'” Barry Keoghan and “All of Us Strangers” star Andrew Scott in the best actor category. Best Drama Supporting Actress is the only Emmy acting category “The Morning Show” has yet to crack, but it’s now the one the series could dominate like only one other show has managed to. Nicole Beharie, Greta Lee, Julianna Margulies, Karen Pittman and Holland Taylor are all eligible for the Apple TV+ drama in the category this year, and if they all make the cut, “The Morning Show” will join “The White Lotus: Sicily” as the only shows to nab five drama supporting actress nominations in a single year.

Before that, the record for a series in the category was four nominees in one year, which only two shows had been able to field: “Game of Thrones” in 2019 and “The Handmaid’s Tale” in 2021.
