A little heavy in parts, but good.

It's such a shame that only three episodes were made once again, but as with each episode that went before, very much worth watching.

I'd start by saying this was my least favourite story of the show so far, it perhaps lacked some of the excitement and razzle dazzle that we've been used to, but it's an interesting enough mystery, and a clever whodunnit.

The main strength of this show, the visuals, are present once again, this looks incredible, glorious production values as always, it rates as the best looking show on the box.

Very well acted, Matthew Beard is given the chance to develop his character a little more. Not quite so much from Oskar this week.

Sadly no news yet of a third series, I imagine this is a very expensive show to make, but I hope we get more, I want to see who Max ends up with.

7/10.

In season 2 of this interesting thriller-series concerning (ir)rationalities the student of Sigmund Freud proves again managing better his skill of creating psychological profiles of others rather then his own (private) life.

Darkness Rising
Prismark1013 April 2022
Brother Stanislav is a fanatic who is spreading anti semitic hate. One young Jewish by was badly beaten.

Stanislav's preaching is publicly challenged by Isaak Korngold at a meeting. When the monk is later found dead.

Isaak is arrested for murder. The negative publicity drives the Korngold family business to the edge of bankruptcy.

Isaak's brother, Jonas is engaged to Clara Weiss. She was once previously engaged to Max Liebermann and she comes to him for help.

The monastery Stanislav belonged to are unhelpful to the police much to Oskar's annoyance. It seems the monks are covering something up.

Max decides to go undercover as a monk visiting from Oxford. He finds out that Stanislav found a relic in the monastery, a relic with spiritual value.

The story threatened to turn into The Name of the Rose. I found it difficult to believe that these monks would so easily take to an outsider. Especially one who kept asking questions.

As the story is set in 1907. It certainly sows the seeds of the rising tide of anti semitism. I guess that might be explored in later episodes along with Max's convoluted love life.

..........stupid ass ending. Worth the 1 star I gave it, otherwise I would have given an 8. Sorry, but that ending made absolutely no sense!! I'm now writing nonsense because I'm forced to write at least 150 characters.

sigh - getting a bit soapy

Warning: Spoilers
The final episode of this season ends with an all-too-predictable ending.

This sort of torpedoed an otherwise mediocre plot - and why are the villians turning into cartoons?

Max's character's progress from last season has been demolished by the ending, whereas he decides to fool around with his ex-fiancee.

Really? After chasing the other woman all last season, getting somewhere with her this season, only to throw it all away?

Sounds very un-characterstic of Max - is the writer(s) having trouble at home?

The writing isn't as strong as the initial season, with nice charatcer development, but I fear it is going the way of Silent Witness - more melodrama than murder mystery.

Not up to the standard
steffern24 November 2022
The intro monologue was cringe, the inspector behaving as if he had never investigated a crime before, the commissioner acting as if he had not participated in the previous episode, the unwillingness of the Father to cooperate made no sense, the criminal greatly overreacted when revealed to the viewer, the fight scene was not at all believable, and the ending was a facepalm moment taken straight out of a bad soap opera. It's as if this whole episode was written and directed by someone completely unfamiliar to the whole franchise and had absolutely no clue as to the history between the characters, had any experience with or insight into criminal investigation, or how to drive the story forward. A massive nosedive for the whole series, which up until now had been top notch. Genuinely disappointing.

Dull and predictable

Warning: Spoilers
Like the rest of this show, the characters are underdeveloped and uninteresting, with acting that is often wooden. I didn't even care "whodunnit". I already knew that they would never depict a Jewish person ever doing anything wrong, they are always wrongly accused by an evil white man.

I was also baffled as to why there was a mixed race black monk in early 19th century Vienna, or a mixed race Indonesian woman in a role that such a person never would have held. But I suppose that's the BBC for you.

Women behave like and are treated like 21st century women. Sometimes the men might flippantly point out something like "women shouldn't be in a monastery" but then everyone carries on as normal. It's like a nod and a wink to 21st century viewers.

It's difficult to suspend disbelief with so many anachronisms. I often feel like I'm being re-educated rather than enjoying a TV show. At times it feels like later series of Doctor Who.
