'Scooby Doo and Guess Who' "The Feast of Dr Frankenfooder" (2020)
Opening thoughts: "The Feast of Dr Frankenfooder" was mostly quite enjoyable on first watch two years ago, even if the silliness did get too much at times in my view. There are some 'Scooby Doo and Guess Who' episodes that fared better on rewatch, a few by a little and others by a lot. "The Feast of Dr Frankenfooder" was one of those episodes. It isn't one of the best episodes of the show, but it sure isn't one of the worst and it does get props for its originality (in comparison to other 'Scooby Doo and Guess Who' episodes) and fun atmosphere.
Bad things: It still does for my tastes go a little too far on the silliness at times and can get pretty weird.
Good things: All the same though, "The Feast of Dr Frankenfooder" is still a lot of fun. The animation has a lot of atmosphere, rich colour and even richer attention to detail. The music is dynamic and groovy, also loved the modern spin on the iconic classic theme tune for 'Scooby Doo Where are You', although it is too short. A vast majority of the voice acting is very good (excepting Kate Miccucci being too abrasive as Velma), with Matthew Lillard nailing it as Shaggy.
Furthermore, Alton Brown is a very entertaining guest star. One that has a lot of personality that avoids blandness and witty chemistry with the gang, while also not being over-bearing or over-used. Loved the atmosphere on the whole, which was very spooky in the mystery and the setting while also having a wonderfully weird wackiness with everything with the food.
Had little issue with the humour, Shaggy and Scooby's antics are still funny and endearing and Daphne with the diary was hilarious. The mystery, an inventive re-imagining of the classic 'Frankenstein' story (which the franchise did parody more than once beforehand and very well each time but it felt fresh regardless), is suitably creepy and doesn't get too manic or feel like it runs out of gas later on. It helps that the villain is great, very original in design and very creepy. Plus the ending was clever and not expected, not to mention pretty different this time round. Did have a little suspicion in the build up to the solution, but didn't foresee the twist.
Concluding thoughts: Overall, solid episode and got better with each of the two rewatches, thanks to more to appreciate.
