A history professor with a penchant for conjectures
msunando3 November 2020
Damayanti (Tuhina Das) plays a history professor with keen eye for observation that is her foundation for moonlighting as an amateur detective. She and her husband Samaresh (Indrasish Roy) are on a holiday at a scenic resort in Santiniketan where trouble is brewing. It's a double whammy - first, funds are being misappropriated using POS terminals, and simultaneously, there's a hostile corporate takeover bid on the owner's business empire involving his entire family.

Damayanti almost naturally dives into the cesspool of intrigue and corporate politics, putting her already delayed honeymoon on the backburner, and even risking Samaresh and her lives. There's a murder too, that complicates matters further, but Damayanti has a nose that drives her in the right direction always, and her guesswork, read mere conjectures, are good enough to sniff out the plot and unravel the mystery. So much so that West Bengal Police Inspector Siben Sen (Shoumo Banerjee) is only too happy to play second fiddle to Damayanti, allowing her to take centre stage and follow her directives.

Damayanti is an unapologetic mixture of Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, who believes that her exceptional prowess of observation is good enough to solve any case. She walks into any place without authority, snoops into security systems, interrogates people in the police station, and somehow seems to have access to the most important clues always. The story packs power, intrigue and complications, but the execution and script are too simplistic to showcase Damayanti as an intelligent series. Every move of the detective is spot on, a directional strategy that doesn't allow the suspense to rise above a flat line, failing to generate excitement. The script is the real culprit here, that gives Damayanti a "know it all" attitude for an amateur detective, where faltering is not a consideration. Hopefully, Season 2 will address the concerns and make itself more worthy of viewing.

Very predictable and drab
Moushumi_Mitra30 October 2020
Was looking forward to another bengali detective series , utterly disappointed . 98% of the plot points were predictable , except the twist in the end about sharmistha !

TO start with the central character damayanti .... was more conscious about make up and hair , saree designer blouse then getting into the skin of the character ... who goes to jog with full on patchy and oily make up and open just done up curly hair . Just for these reasons , couldn't take her seriously as a detective . On various occasions she was more conscious about her make up and hair then the dialogue delivery . A history professor suddenly gets a case was not digestible .

The chemistry between husband and wife looked super artificial ! and again trying to portray police men as dumb asses they are incapable of solving any crime .

The glamour thrown in of chandrayee ghosh was a very wanna be and super predictable character .... But must say she was flawless in portraying her character . A sign of a true veteran actor .

Rest all the actors were just OK , they were playing the part with on the face acting !!

Over all a predictably drab storyline !!!! What a waste of an opportunity

Superb Story-telling! Must Watch

What separates this series from the usual Feludas and Byomkesh Bakshis is the simplicity and subtlety in storytelling. The lead character Damayanti, is a Prof of History and has an eye for details. She keenly observes, spots discrepancies, is intelligent and analytically dissects the events.

She is not a regular detective but another intelligent person who is curious and observant enough to solve cases. And hence if you felt it to be not so nerve wrecking its because Damayanti is not a professional detective and hence she does all her investigations like an intelligent commoner and hence the divergence and uniqueness from other detective stories.

The directors have beautifully utilised the surroundings of Bolpur and Bengali culture. The lead character wears gorgeous sarees, that compliments her intellect. The friendship between the husband and her is lively, supportive and one where you would find a lot of similarities when you look around.

Is it a perfect story, answer is no. There are flaws like the investigation is too simple and easy at times, the premises are always unguarded for her to get into and check. This is sometimes utopian. However if you are looking for a very homely, comforting series and a easy story - do dig into this one.
