‘Go Ahead, Brother’ Netflix Review: Polish Show’s Bursts Of Action Keep It From Being Totally Boring
I am sure you are familiar with those kinds of crime thrillers where a character (or a bunch of characters) finds oneself in the middle of a complicated gang war because they’ve robbed someone to satiate their greed, take care of some temporary hurdle in their life, or for no fault of their own. Matthew Vaughn’s Layer Cake is a great example. Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction fits the bill. Martin McDonagh’s Seven Psychopaths is an underappreciated entry into this subgenre. Abhinay Deo’s Delhi Belly, Kunal Kemmu’s Madgaon Express, Mrighdeep Singh Lamba’s Fukrey, and Rajesh Krishnan’s Lootcase are some decent films that explore the genre’s tropes through the lens of Bollywood. Then there are directors like Guy Ritchie and Joe Carnahan whose filmographies are chock-full of comedic capers like Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, RocknRolla, Smokin’ Aces, and Copshop. I...

Could the next Squid Game, Lupin or Money Heist hail from Latin America? TV history teaches us you cannot engineer a global hit, but with three tentpole projects launching in the next few months, Netflix is stacking the odds in favor of the next worldwide watercooler show coming from the region. Each of Netflix’s big three is a local landmark, the streamer’s biggest show out of its country of origin. Or, in the case of Senna, the biggest ever from the region. This is super-premium TV, Latin America-style.

Labels like “comedy” and “drama” are fundamentally meaningless — except when it comes to TV awards, when the distinction can mean the difference between win and lose or a nomination and a snub. That’s why the denizens of Hollywood, eager to buck tradition and format for the sake of art most of the year, tend to lose their shit around Emmy season.
The annual debate resurfaced this past summer when The Bear scored 23 Emmy nominations and broke 30 Rock’s record for the most for a comedy in a single season. The genre, after all, was long-dominated by sitcoms — Frasier being the all-time Emmy with 37 wins, followed closely by The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Cheers. And while there’s no arguing that The Bear is an incredibly well-made piece of television, as evidenced by the eventual 11 wins in a diverse pool of categories, it’s not exactly brimming with levity.

A veteran producer of international co-productions and high-end drama series — see the Emmy-nominated The Pillars of the Earth with Matthew Macfadyen and Eddie Redmayne or the pan-European crime series Crossing Lines with the late, great Donald Sutherland — Bauer has been building up Amazon’s slate of international English-language originals since 2022.
Her upcoming slate includes the heist thriller Haven, starring Sophie Turner, Jacob Fortune Lloyd and Archie Madekwe; the family drama The Girlfriend with Robin Wright and Olivia Cooke; and the thriller Lazarus, a psychological mystery from Harlan Coben and Danny Brocklehurst that follows a forensic pathologist, played by Sam Claflin, who becomes entangled in a series of cold-case murders as he grapples with the mystery of his father’s death (played by Bill Nighy) and the murder of his sister (Utopia‘s Alexandra Roach) 25 years ago. On the lighter side, Bauer’s division has also greenlit a new comedy series by and starring Riz Ahmed.

Exclusive: Fran Harris, co-writer on BBC cop show Blue Lights, is developing a Cold Feet-style drama series with backing from Irish pubcaster RTÉ.
Harris has been working on the relationship drama Laura McNicholas, founder of Dublin-based indie 925 Productions, who is here in Rome at Mia Market pitching Yes! to buyers, co-production partners and distributors. RTÉ is aboard alongside Screen Ireland to support development, but the series isn’t yet greenlit.
McNicholas told Deadline it was being set up as an hour-long relationship drama “along the lines of Cold Feet as an ensemble. “There will ideally be multiple storylines and threads we can explore, giving it renewability for many seasons,” she added.
The plot is being billed as a “generational story about self-rediscovery” in which several unhappy college friends who reconnect in their late-30s been look for new venues after hitting crises in their lives, such as being widowed or divorced.

Longlegs director Osgood Perkins is tackling Stephen King adaptation The Monkey next. Here’s the first full trailer:
By any yardstick, Longlegs has proved to be one of this year’s most pleasant surprises in cinemas, with Osgood Perkins’ gloomy psychological thriller impressing audiences and overperforming at the box office. Perkins is following up his success in 2024 with an early 2025 release: The Monkey, his spin on one of Stephen King’s classic short stories.
We got a teaser back in August which showcased little in the way of footage, instead focusing on highlighting the quality of personnel involved in the production. There’s the aforementioned Oz Perkins, once again working with Neon, King, an author who needs no introduction and James Wan, the horror impresario who has produced the project.
In front of the camera, there’s a double dose of Theo James, the recent lead of Netflix’s The Gentlemen series.

Hot off the success of “Longlegs,” writer-director Osgood Perkins is already back with another supernatural horror flick. On Tuesday, Neon released the kooky and disturbing trailer for “The Monkey,” which hits theaters early next year. The trailer has a darkly funny tone, but it also contains the image of a baby carriage on fire.
“The Monkey” is based on a 1980 short story by Stephen King that was included in his classic collection “Skeleton Crew.” The story follows twin brothers Hal and Bill, who find a creepy old monkey toy in their attic. When mysterious and gruesome deaths start happening, they get rid of the toy. They grow apart over the years, but they’re brought back together when the monkey comes back. The brothers are played as a child by Christian Convery (“Sweet Tooth”) and as an adult by Emmy nominee Theo James. The cast also includes Emmy winner Tatiana Maslany,...

As inch toward the end of 2024, Netflix fans are starting to worry. Will your favorite show be renewed or canceled? Will that show you just started binge-watching not return for another season? How many established shows will have their final seasons this year or even next year? There's already a fair bit we know about the Netflix shows that have been renewed so far in 2024.

Girl, we got wigged at the gig! CBS and the team behind Matlock pulled not one but two fast ones on audiences and did it most ingeniously.
Kathy Bates is a liar, which makes us love her more! In all seriousness, I was flabbergasted by that twist at the end of the premiere. But now the series has another possible problem to deal with.
Since the pilot episode has been encored, everyone should be up to speed on the big twist of the Matlock reboot. In short, it’s not really a reboot or remake.
(Brooke Palmer/CBS)
The question now is, how did the network, actors, and writers pull something so elaborate off? More importantly, how are viewers going to feel about this pivot?

When it comes to British gangster movies — and series — there really is nobody with a hit rate quite like Guy Ritchie. Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels. Snatch. The Gentlemen. The Gentlemen again. Frankly, what Ritchie doesn't know about knuckledusters, fixers, wide-boys, and mob bosses isn't worth knowing. Now, after a couple of recent diversions into war movies with The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare and The Covenant, Deadline are reporting that Ritchie is tooling up for a return to criminal underworld territory with Paramount+ gangster drama series The Associate — and he's bringing out the big guns to get it made.

Tom Hardy, Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan are all now associated with “The Associate,” as the trio of British actors are in final talks to star in the Paramount+ series from Guy Ritchie and Ronan Bennett.
The project had initially been developed with the title “The Donovans,” with plans to function as an across-the-pond spin-off of the Showtime series “Ray Donovan,” which was led by Liev Schreiber for seven seasons and a film adaptation. The figure was up 74% from 2022’s £26.7m post-tax operating profit. The company also saw pre-tax figures rising 70% from £31.6m to £53.7m.
Netflix’s profit was able to weather its tax bill, which almost doubled from the £7.5m paid in 2022 to the £14.2m shelled out in 2023.
In a Companies House filing from its main UK entity, Netflix Services UK, the SVoD major reported an 8% revenue increase in 2023, reaching £1.7bn compared with £1.5bn in 2022. The increase was less...

Netflix saw profits shoot up in the UK last year while its tax bill doubled.
The streamer, which for just the third year was publishing revenue from UK subscribers via its Netflix Services UK subsidiary, saw operating profit rise by 70%, or £22M ($28M), to £53.7M ($70M). Of equally good news for the SVoD, Netflix’s “member base” aka subscribers rose by 7%, double the increase on the previous year, while there was a rise in the “average number of paid memberships and an increase in average monthly revenue per paying membership,” according to the Companies House filing.
The filing doesn’t give away subs numbers but ratings body Barb’s latest report from Q2 reported that Netflix was in 17.1 million UK homes, up by about 400,000 from Q1.
The results pertain to a year in which Netflix released big UK hits including the final seasons of The Crown and Top Boy, and the Beckham documentary.

Netflix has bucked the TV industry contraction to post record U.K. revenues of £1.7 billion ($2.2 billion) according to its latest company accounts.
They show that Netflix Services U.K., a Netflix Inc subsidiary responsible for providing its streaming service within the U.K., increased its revenues by 8%. That’s a lower jump than in 2022 (where revenues where 12% higher than the previous year) but still represents a record figure for the company. In 2022 revenues amounted to £1.5 billion.
The vast proportion of that money is made up from streaming revenue (£1.6 billion in 2023) with a trickle (just over £35 million) also coming from services rendered to parent company Netflix U.K. and its Amsterdam-based sister company Netflix International B.V.
According to the financial report, which was filed this week at the U.K. business registrar Companies House, the revenue increase is “due to a larger member base… and increase in revenue per paying membership.

It's safe to say you haven't seen Hugh Grant quite like this. The lovable character actor has always been something of a chameleon, appearing in everything from family-friendly comedies (most recently "Paddington 2") to murder-mysteries (director Rian Johnson's "Glass Onion") to harder-edged genre movies (Guy Ritchie's "The Gentlemen" in 2019 and "Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre" last year) to blockbuster musicals and adventure movies -- hello, scene-stealing appearances as an Oompa Loompa in "Wonka" and as Forge in "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves." His next role is utterly unlike any of those previous ones, however. Leave it to A24 and directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods to bring out a whole new side of him in "Heretic."
Let's put it this way: If you ever thought that nothing could possibly be more annoying than religious missionaries going door-to-door to spread the good news of whatever they might be hawking,...

Actor Tom Cruise is known for his utmost dedication to the cinematic experience. In 2022, he ‘saved cinema’ by releasing the air-force action film Top Gun: Maverick, which earned more than a billion at the box office and is credited with bringing back audiences to theaters. He has supported good cinema since the beginning of his career.
Even before he revived the exhibition industry after the pandemic with Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise reportedly helped out budding filmmakers he saw potential in. His endorsement for 1998’s Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels reportedly saved the producers from retiring before they even started and launched the careers of Jason Statham and Guy Ritchie.

If you’re anything like this TV Fanatic, you’ve already developed an addiction to High Potential and need your fix. How dare ABC keep our favorite eccentric cleaning lady away for a whole week!
All joking aside, this show is phenomenal without resorting to crazy gimmicks or overwrought dialogue and plotting. The strength of the series lies in its level of talent.
High Potential doesn’t just boast the fantastic talent of Kaitlin Olson, but a creator who wrote and had a hand in some of history’s biggest shows and movies.
(Carlos Lopez-Calleja/Disney)
Drew Goddard, creator of High Potential, also wrote for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lost. If that doesn’t impress you, he also wrote The Martian and World War Z. Still not enough? He directed Cabin in the Woods!

Bad news out of Point Place, Wisconsin: Netflix has officially canceled That '90s Show after two seasons. Deadline has confirmed series star and executive producer Kurtwood Smith's announcement of the cancellation, which also mentioned a slight glimmer of hope for fans.
"To steal Red Forman’s words… we aren’t going to be dumbasses… we will shop the show, because good grandparents would try hard to get these kids graduated from high school," Smith wrote at the end of a lengthy Instagram caption for fans of That '90s Show.
It's unclear where the sitcom will be shopped and how much interest there would be for the series to be purchased elsewhere. That '90s Show saw its viewership continue to decline with the two-part release of season 2 in June and August this summer, as part 2 debuted with only 1.8 million views and part 3 didn't manage to chart in Netflix's weekly top 10 most popular shows ranking.

While the actor has been earning rave reviews for his performance, despite the layers of makeup and prosthetics, this isn’t the first time he showed off his acting genius. Netflix released its semi-annual data dump on Thursday, unveiling viewership for the streamer’s biggest hits — and not so big releases — from January through June of 2024.
While the most-watched seasons of TV during the six-month interval included “Fool Me Once,” “Bridgerton” Season 3, “Baby Reindeer” and “The Gentlemen,” a group of winners have arisen from the data dump, including children’s TV as a whole — including “Peppa Pig” — “Young Sheldon” and buzzy crime docs like “Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal.”
As the streamer continues to bolster its live event programming, the success of “The Roast of Tom Brady” followed in the footsteps of “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage” as it found an eager audience, whereas the first-ever livestream of the SAG-AFTRA Awards earlier this year didn’t do much for Netflix, viewership-wise.

Netflix’s latest data dump is here and, as trailed by Ted Sarandos earlier this week, the Brits have dominated the TV series listings.
Harlan Coben adaptation Fool Me Once led the pack in the first half of 2024 with more than 100 million views globally, just ahead of the third season of Bridgerton on 91.9 million. Bridgerton had an epic six months, with its first and second season also making the top 20 with 38.4 million and 34.2 million views globally. Shonda Rhimes’ show is commissioned out of the U.S. but made in the UK with British acting talent.
After Bridgerton Season 3 came Baby Reindeer – the controversial smash series that is currently subject to a lawsuit – watched by 87.6 million, with The Gentlemen next with 75.9 million.
The most-watched U.S. series was Avatar: The Last Airbender in fifth with 71.1 million, followed by Griselda. In seventh place was also a British series, American Nightmare, the highest-rated...

Lack of transparency with viewership numbers is an ongoing complaint in the streaming space, but Netflix's co-ceo Ted Sarandos doesn't "think we could be any more transparent than" its biannual data dump, which reports number of views and hours watched per season on the platform. In fact, speaking at the Fast Company Innovation Festival,...

Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos recently spoke about the company’s content strategy and commitment to direct streaming. He said some theatrical releases can be inefficient and that Netflix can invest heavily in films without needing box office success. This allows the streaming service to put movies directly on its platform.
Sarandos also noted competitors like Apple have struggled with theatrical releases for expensive movies. Apple reportedly plans a limited one-week theatrical run for its Brad Pitt and George Clooney film “Wolfs” before releasing it on Apple TV+.
The Netflix executive said audiences do not care about release windows between theaters and streaming. This aligns with Netflix prioritizing subscriber access over traditional distribution models. Sarandos emphasized constantly innovating, warning those who protect outdated practices risk becoming obsolete.
A key part of Netflix’s success, according to Sarandos, is U.K.-produced shows. He said the top four titles on Netflix worldwide—“Fool Me Once,...

We know Netflix can’t truly be bothered with putting movies in theaters. That it has arguably left some money on the table for movies like “Glass Onion” has been well-documented, and with Scott Stuber out of the picture and now determined to make theatrical movies of his own, Netflix can continue doing what it does best in making streaming hits.
In an interview in the UK on Tuesday, Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos not only did not defend theatrical and the time-tested practices of Hollywood but also said for some films, putting them into theaters just isn’t the best thing for them.
“It’s unique to Netflix that we have enough scale,” Sarandos said at the Royal Television Society’s London Convention (via THR). “We can uniquely spend $200 million on a film and have enough scale of viewership to put it directly on Netflix without trying to recover some...

Giancarlo Esposito is used to frightening people. After all, he’s built a career out of it. Once, while on a flight, a woman waiting for the toilet saw him coming up the aisle and was so scared that she begged him to go before her. Bemused, he did: “I came out and said, ‘Have a nice piss!’” Even the tallest, most muscular men who approach him admit they feel intimidated in his presence. “My talents are facial expressions and intensity,” he says. “A guy last weekend said, ‘Wow, you’re not a big man, but you’re so frightening!’ It’s all about energy; that’s all we are as human beings, we’re energy.”

Netflix boss Ted Sarandos has said despite the complaint the occasional streamer is overstuffed with options, it can’t have too much content. “People often ask me if we need so many movies and TV shows on Netflix,” he said. “I always answer with an emphatic yes. People have such different and eclectic tastes that you can’t afford to program for just one sensibility. You have to love it all — prestige dramas, indie films, true crime, romantic comedies, stand-up, documentaries and reality TV.”
The streaming boss made the remarks at the Royal Television Society conference in London on Tuesday morning, where he gave an opening speech before being interviewed by journalist Kirsty Wark.
Among the lessons he shared with the audience, made primarily of TV industry professionals, were the need to innovate and always putting the audience first.
