Back from the Easter weekend, Danielle Moodie talks about the difficulties social distancing brings for families and friends, and the racial and wealth disparity that continues to be shown as the US lags behind other countries in the world in responding to the corona virus outbreak.
Mo, 20. Apr. 2020
News doesn't quit over the weekend, and Danielle Moodie catches you up on all of it - including conservative protests against sheltering in place, and TV personalities with PhDs like Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz giving dangerous medical advice on FOX News. With guest NYU Professor Melissa Murray.
Do, 23. Apr. 2020
Danielle Moodie pops off on a Twitter hater and lays out how there aren't two sides in our current crisis, unless you mean the sides of right and wrong. She's also joined by April Grayson and Adnan Khan, surrogates for Represent Justice who discuss the issues incarcerated people face amidst the corona virus outbreak.
Mo, 27. Apr. 2020
It's a new week with the same dangers, as Danielle Moodie tears into the weekend's debacle over Donald Trump's suggestion that injecting and/or ingesting cleaning agents and disinfectant can help fight the corona virus. WokeAF contributor and NYU Law Professor Melissa Murray joins to break down why conservatives are protesting shelter-in-place orders and the disparity between federalism and states rights when Republicans are in charge versus when Democrats are.
Di, 28. Apr. 2020
As more states "re-open," Danielle Moodie considers the very serious consequences of prematurely ending social protections against the corona virus and goes off on Trump's incompetence, the failure to hold him accountable, and the Republican party's willingness to let 7 million people die. In the second half of today's show, Danielle is joined by Teri Williams, President and COO of OneUnited Bank, to discuss the importance of banking Black, financial tips for weathering the storm of COVID-19, and OneUnited's support for home schooled children as we shelter in place.
Mi, 29. Apr. 2020
Danielle Moodie soberly reflects on the extreme racial disparity in corona virus deaths and whether America as we know it can survive. She's joined by WokeAF contributors Jonathan Metzl and Kurt Bardella, who discuss Trump's scapegoating crusade against the WHO and Republicans' willingness to let poor, mostly black and Latinx people die for the sake of going back to work for the top one percent.
Do, 30. Apr. 2020
Danielle Moodie vents her outrage at Republicans' apparent willingness to let millions of Americans die, and takes an emotional look back on the AIDS crisis as well as the loss of one of her own family members. Later on, she's joined by WokeAF contributor Glenn Kirschner who discusses Trump's criminality and whether it matters at this point if he breaks the law.
Mo, 4. Mai 2020
For my very first show on Patreon, I'm joined by WokeAF contributor Prof. Melissa Murray. Together we discuss America's rush to "reopen" and get "back to work" as the corona virus outbreak continues to ravage the country, and the impact this has on families, childcare, and particularly working women. In our desire to get "back to normal," let's ask ourselves if we ever had a healthy normal in the first place and re-imagine what our future could look like.
Di, 5. Mai 2020
You work for the government for over forty years, then - if you're lucky - you get to enjoy about a decade of retirement. And that's if you can live on social security and whatever savings you may have been able to scrounge. That's life in America, and we're seeing now how easily it can crumble. It's important to stay grounded and mindful, but it's also important to be woke to the cracks and flaws in our American society especially as more states and businesses dangerously float the idea of "reopening" amidst a global pandemic. Sigh. Pray about it. Or meditate, like I've been doing.
Mi, 6. Mai 2020
We have to be honest about what this pandemic means under a Republican administration: a genocide against black and brown people deemed "essential workers" to be the collateral damage as we rush to re-open the economy. WokeAF contributor Jonathan Metzl joins me to discuss the racialized aspect of America's corona virus response. Later, I'm joined by WokeAF contributor Kurt Bardella to discuss the increasingly credible accusations by Tara Reade against Joe Biden and what it could mean for the 2020 election.
Do, 7. Mai 2020
I'm tired. I'm tired of seeing black people become hashtags. I'm tired of having to watch trauma porn splattered all over social media for days at a time. I am TIRED. But folks, the show must go on. I'm joined for the first time by Felicia Wong, President and CEO of The Roosevelt Institute who goes over why we need federal aid to help shape a more equitable future coming out of the corona virus...and why we aren't getting it under Donald Trump. And, our weekly dose of reality from WokeAF contributor Glenn Kirschner, who pulls back the curtain on Trump's politically partisan and unqualified judicial nominees.
Fr, 8. Mai 2020
In America, black lives are not respected and black lives still do not matter. This week has shown that twofold as we reflect on the shameful murders of Ahmaud Arbery and Dreasjon Reed. My friend Elie Mystal joins me to talk about the myriad of ways in which white people terrorize black Americans, and we discuss his article in The Nation: We Didn't Need Video to Know Ahmaud Arbery Was Lynched.
Mo, 11. Mai 2020
We need to stop waiting for "normal" to come back and accept that we are in a new normal and that things will continue to be different than they were before in the coming weeks, months, and even years. The future of the pandemic after 80,000 American deaths and counting is not one where we live our lives the same way we did before the outbreak. I'm honestly scared for what that future might look like and so I ask: How many of you own a gun or know how to shoot, or even have been thinking recently about arming yourself? Sound off in the comments and thanks for listening and staying woke AF.
Di, 12. Mai 2020
Remember when Republican voters and politicians cared so much that four Americans tragically died in the Benghazi attack? Where's the outrage when EIGHTY THOUSAND Americans and counting have died under a Republican president and administration? And: my reactions to our ongoing gun rights conversation from yesterday. Folks, it is not easy navigating this difficult time.
Mi, 13. Mai 2020
White Americans want everything for themselves, and they don't care who they step on in their way to get what they want. America has always been this way, but the corona virus outbreak has exposed just how little privileged white people truly care for the lives of America's actual essential workers who keep things moving - who, of course, are mostly black and brown. I'm joined - via Zoom for the first time. - by WokeAF contributor Jonathan Metzl to discuss this; stay tuned to my social channels @DeeTwoCents and the DCP Entertainment Youtube channel to hear more. I'm also joined by WokeAF contributor Kurt Bardella to talk about the continued racialization of Trump's corona virus response.
Do, 14. Mai 2020
I am sick to death of William Barr. Donald Trump's personal attorney general has ushered in an unprecedented political crime wave, with Mitch McConnell's help packing the courts. Federal prosecutors and conservative judges collude to let Republican criminality rule the land. WokeAF contributor Glenn Kirschner and my friend, legal analyst Katie Phang join to break it down before I have a breakdown.
Di, 19. Mai 2020
The Republican party isn't getting duped by Trump. They are celebrating him. White people were not fooled by Donald Trump. He didn't take advantage of their "economic anxiety." It is about power. White men want to hold onto their power and privilege, and white women trade their autonomy for the power they gain by being at their side. This is what we are dealing with in America right now. We are also dealing with an unprecedented health crisis that is impacting marginalized populations the worst; Topeka Sam and Norris Henderson, two formerly incarcerated Americans, join me to discuss how the COVID-19 outbreak is impacting the incarcerated community both within prisons and outside of prison walls.
Mi, 20. Mai 2020
Malcolm X, whose words I have been reading a lot more in these times and who would have turned 95 yesterday, said this: "Nobody can give you freedom. Nobody can give you equality or justice or anything. If you're a man [or woman!], you take it." That is how I feel in these times. These old, rich, right-wing white men are not going to give up one iota of their power. It's our time to take it. On today's show, I'm joined as always by our wonderful WokeAF contributors Kurt Bardella, who discusses the need of the Democratic party and the Biden campaign to get more aggressive in this time; and Jonathan Metzl, who discusses how corona virus protestors' willingness to die of whiteness is actually putting all of society at risk.
Do, 21. Mai 2020
That's right folks, it's said that America doesn't negotiate with terrorists and if that is indeed true, we need to collectively stop trying to negotiate with the cult and terror group known as the Republican party. We needed three months of support for a true shelter-in-place, but what did our "leaders" do? Let absurd, self-centered American individualism win out so that people had to fend for themselves and die in the name of "freedom." From a virus. And with his threats to cut off funding for the US Postal Service, it's clear that Trump's next target is the 2020 election - Republicans want to force Americans to choose between staying at home on election day or going to the polls and risking their health. The worst part? Democrats aren't showing up to fight back. The reality is, we are on our own in this struggle. If we are going to get through it, we need to get through it together. On today's show I get my weekly dose of optimism from WokeAF contributor Glenn Kirschner, who discusses Trump's targeting of the postal service, how crucial it is to stop Trump in November, the importance of whistleblowers and why they need protection especially in this time, and our weekly update on the Mike Flynn case. Remember when we used to have "slow news days?"
Fr, 22. Mai 2020
If there was ever a time when America was truly a leader in the developed world, that time has officially passed us by. Other civilized countries are now giving us the side-eye for electing and continuing to support an incompetent buffoon who encourages teenage toddler tantrums from his literally trigger-happy white ultra-conservative base. What happens when the rest of the world leaves us behind? Also in today's show: the latest developments in the killing of Ahmaud Arbery, Matt Lauer comes out against Ronan Farrow when nobody asked him to say a damn thing, the Biden campaign is vetting Vice Presidential candidates who are not women of color, and WokeAF contributor Ned Price gives us the latest news around Trump's firing spree of inspectors general.
Mo, 25. Mai 2020
Joe Biden can't keep his foot out of his mouth. I know we like to say certain people are "invited to the cookout" but this Memorial Day weekend, can we revoke Joe Biden's invitation? I think he needs to work a little more for our vote, including a VP pick that's a bit closer in complexion to the people who got him the nomination in the first place, if you get what I'm saying. To discuss this and plenty more - including the latest on our favorite royals Meghan and Harry. - I'm joined by friend and WokeAF contributor Melissa Murray. Also. Hear the rest of my interview with Frank Smyth, author of the incredibly informative book The NRA: The Unauthorized History. And don't miss my Memorial Day shoutouts to you, my loyal Patreon supporters. Thank you so much for helping us grow in just a few short weeks, and for telling your friends and family about WokeAF Daily.
Di, 26. Mai 2020
Black people are responsible for Joe Biden's presumptive nomination as the Democratic party's presidential candidate. So now I actually need him to do something and show up for us. We know that Trump's bad. Biden should be thanking black people every day for clinching the nomination over Bernie Sanders. Instead, he's considering white women like Amy Klobuchar and Gretchen Whitmer as his running mate. When Biden promised he would choose a woman as his VP, no one was asking for a midwestern white woman with no racial framework. Just because Biden is the presumptive nominee does not mean that he no longer has to earn our vote. Republicans will tap dance for white evangelicals all year long to get their vote. It's high time the Democratic party started working just as hard to earn our votes they so badly need to win.
Mi, 27. Mai 2020
It is essentially legal to kill black people in America. That is the message we are constantly bombarded with in the wake of innocent black people being killed, whether by police or by civilians. With the back-to-back viral videos of George Floyd and Christian Cooper - one who tragically was murdered by police and the other who was saved from such a fate by his own instinct to hold up his phone and start recording - we have an opportunity to do so much better as a country. Am I happy that the four officers who collaborated to murder George Floyd have lost their jobs? Am I happy that Amy Cooper lost her job, and her little dog too? Yes. But I need to see results. These people deserve to be arrested, and to go to jail. It's time for white people to stop getting away with murder just because the victims are black. On today's #WokeWednesday show, I am also joined by WokeAF contributor Jonathan Metzl, author of Dying of Whiteness, who helps me further break down these stories as well as discuss the Biden campaign as we approach November. Does the VP pick matter? (Yes.) I'm also joined by WokeAF contributor Kurt Bardella, and we talk about Trump's rampant dishonesty on social media and the need for these massive media conglomerates to finally stand up to Trump's endless lies.
Mo, 1. Juni 2020
Danielle is devastated after the events of this weekend. America is on fire. Over 100,000 Americans are dead from corona virus. 41 million people have lost their livelihood. Black people are being hunted like dogs. Protests are being infiltrated by people trying to create more pain. American cities have turned into police states. And the President is cheering on increased violence from law enforcement.
Mi, 3. Juni 2020
The revolution will not be televised. The revolution will be (Instagram) Live. And Periscope. And Twitter. The revolution is here, and while the mainstream media may craft its narrative and distort the truth, the unfiltered reality is finally getting through to people across all fifty of these United States. While a social media "blackout" is well intentioned, it's more important than ever before to let people see what's going on. This could have been prevented, had governments and police listened to the anguished and angry cries of protesters years, even decades ago. Now we are here, and we will not be silenced. Joining me on today's extra-stuffed WokeAF Daily are contributors Jonathan Metzl and Kurt Bardella to share their perspectives on the explosive ongoing protests and police violence across America.
Do, 4. Juni 2020
I know you aren't used to hearing optimism from me in these troubling, uncertain times. But I do believe America is not only worth saving, but worth re-imagining - whatever it takes. It's time to take our country back. On another extra-stuffed WokeAF Daily, I'm joined by regular contributor and legal analyst Glenn Kirschner, who discusses the practical elements of what I and many others fear for November: Donald Trump attempting to steal an election and/or refuse to vacate the office. And I'm also joined by friend and very early WokeAF guest Jamilah Lemieux - writer at Slate and co-host of the "Mom and Dad Are Fighting" podcast - about how to talk to your children about, well, everything that's going down in the world today.
Mi, 10. Juni 2020
Let me make something absolutely clear: If Donald Trump is willing to lie about a 75-year-old white male protester, there is nothing he won't lie about. But his lies aren't the only danger in this moment - there is a serious risk that we will not have a free and fair election in November. And honestly, when was the last time that we did? Meanwhile, we are seeing more promise of institutional change in the last week than we have seen in the last decade as white people wake up to the realities of police brutality, so we need to stay in the streets and keep showing who really has the power. I admit I wasn't on board with calls to defund the police, but when I thought about the massive budgets police departments get, against the struggling social safety nets that Republicans have radically defunded over the decades...yeah, it's time to put that money back towards helping people, not brutalizing them. On today's #WokeWednesday show, I'm joined by WokeAF contributor Jonathan Metzl, Vanderbilt University professor and author of Dying Of Whiteness, to give his perspective on the ongoing protests and the calls to defund and/or abolish the police. Journalist Katherine Stewart, author of The Power Worshippers, also joins to discuss how white evangelical religious nationalists' decades-long crusade is coming to a head in this moment.

His name was Rayshard Brooks. He was 27 years old. He was sleeping off a long night in a car, in a Wendy's parking lot. He offered to walk home when he was confronted by police, rather than being checked on like a good citizen. Instead, as they do, police escalated the situation. Now Rayshard Brooks is no longer with us. They killed him. They shot him in the back as he was fleeing for his life. All over sleeping it off in a Wendy's parking lot. I spend time today reading the names of the many Black lives we have lost - and recognizing the countless more we don't even know. No more names. It is time for this long era of American white supremacy to end.
Mo, 15. Juni 2020
Folks, today's WokeAF Daily was heavy. I wanted to give my reflections on Rayshard Brooks and America's sustained assault on Black lives the proper space and weight it deserves, but I also want to make sure you have a chance to hear this interview. Over the weekend I had the opportunity to speak with Van Lathan, formerly of TMZ, who you may remember confronted Kanye West over his comments about Black Americans living in a slavery mentality. We talked about the things white people - especially rich white people with social influence - can be doing in this moment of corporations embracing Black Lives Matter.
Di, 16. Juni 2020
Yesterday saw a truly surprising landmark decision from the Supreme Court, ruling that LGBT people cannot be fired on the basis of their sexuality or gender. However...we are still in the midst of mass protests against police brutality and, oh yeah, a global pandemic. Qualified immunity needs to go, fighting it needs to be a priority for activists and legislators, and Black Republicans like Tim Scott need to step aside. And Trump won't be able to blame Black Lives Matter protesters when his now-rescheduled Tulsa rally (don't forget how he scheduled it on Juneteenth) surges infection rates in Oklahoma and the surrounding states.
Mi, 17. Juni 2020
Despite what the government and corporations will tell you, the corona virus is not gone. We have not flattened the curve across the country, and in some states, we are now seeing major spikes in several states as beaches, parks, and other public spaces re-open. You can't freedom your way out of a virus. I think we are in for a very rude awakening. Today is #WokeWednesday and I'm joined as usual by Jonathan Metzl and Kurt Bardella, to discuss racial disparities in health care and policing, and what the latest polls mean for Donald Trump and the Republican party.
Do, 18. Juni 2020
The cop who killed Rayshard Brooks by firing into his back has been charged with felony murder. I say: not enough. Justice delayed is justice denied and our justice has been denied too damn long. It's not a few bad apples, it's the whole damn orchard. When will it be enough? When we are all free. Today's WokeAF Daily is jam-packed with absolutely fire guests that you NEED to hear from. Author and activist Kimberly Jones, who you may recognize from the "How Can We Win" viral video, joins to discuss how the legacy of police brutality is manifesting today; and investigative reporter Jerry Mitchell, author of Race Against Time, dives into the history of the manifestation of white supremacist racism and that justice which has been long-delayed. I'm also joined as always by former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirschner, who gives us some hope for November 2020 and beyond.
