Filmmakers often say that they have to personalize their work. After all, they painstakingly devote at least two years of their lives to bring a film to fruition, but in the case of Tarot co-directors Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, they turned what would normally be a genre exercise into something from the heart.
Tarot — which serves as the writer-directors’ feature directorial debut — is a supernatural horror film involving a group of college friends who, during a weekend getaway, crack open a cursed deck of tarot cards to learn their ominous horoscopes. The tarot card reading is reluctantly led by Harriet Slater’s Haley, who, like Halberg, is a Minnesota native, and shortly after the friend group returns to their Boston-area university, all hell breaks loose as each individual reading comes true in lethal fashion.

That’s why they made seven Police Academy movies. No one thought they were good, but we watched them anyway because they were stupid in a pleasing way.
This brings me to this rare comedy-focused episode of The Best Movie You Never Saw, about a movie I loved as a kid that doesn’t super hold up forty years later, but it is still kinda fun – Johnny Dangerously. The latest chapter in the ongoing "Star Wars" saga is upon us in the form of "The Acolyte." The new live-action series hails from Leslye Headland ("Russian Doll") and has been in the works for some time. The show will not only be centering on new characters in a galaxy far, far away, but will be taking us to a largely unexplored era in the larger "Star Wars" timeline: The High Republic.
Disney and Lucasfilm recently released the first trailer for "The Acolyte," which is full of Jedis and drenched in darkness. But as fans will surely note, there are lots of Jedi here, something we haven't seen as much on-screen since the prequels. That's because the High Republic takes place hundreds of years before the events of the original films. It’s hard knowing what to make of Kevin Macdonald’s High & Low: John Galliano. It concerns the controversial fashion designer, his unexpected rise (“the son of a plumber” from Gibraltar), his stratospheric success, his catastrophic fall. For those who may not know: Galliano became the creative director of Christian Dior Se in the mid-90s (Givenchy before that) and developed a style that was both celebrated and imitated by the industry at large. The man himself was regarded as a genius in his own time, and he worked himself (and his right-hand man Steven Robinson) to the bone. His runways were an event unto themselves. The word “revolutionary” was apparently used. Then, in 2011, Galliano’s career came to a screeching halt when he was caught on video at a Paris bar badgering fellow patrons with racist and antisemitic hate speech. He was swiftly fired from his position and arrested for the remarks.

One of the more fascinating aspects of “American Symphony” is that both Oscar- and Grammy-winning musician Jon Batiste and his wife Suleika Jaouad, the bestselling author of “Between Two Kingdoms,” would have made compelling documentary subjects at any point in their careers. It just so happens that when the former “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” band leader had the idea to recruit his “The First Wave” collaborator Matthew Heineman to make a film about his symphony’s Carnegie Hall debut, the Oscar-nominated director fell upon more poignant material than they all could have imagined.
A month into production, Batiste became the first musician to be nominated in seven different Grammy categories. That same day in November 2021, Jaouad began treatment for leukemia after years of being in remission. “It became an even broader aperture of what a documentary of this period of time would be. If getting (mostly) on the other side of a pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that the looming specter of mass death really has a way of realigning your priorities. That mood hits especially different in the world of Montreal-based developer KO_OP’s Goodbye Volcano High, a game which posits that prehistoric life on Pangaea was a very modern, 21st-century kind of situation. Prehistoric high school in particular is a perennial genderqueer maze of entanglements, crushes, awkwardness, puberty, half-formed ambitions, and parental expectations that just so happen to be populated by anthropomorphic, animated dinosaurs.
In the middle of it all is Fang, a burgeoning musician who spent their summer vacation undergoing a full-blown mood change, from a very femme pop-punk to a moody, sardonic enby who keeps being deadnamed in the notes left on the fridge by their ever-absent parents. With their friends scattered to the four winds for the summer,...

France’s TV sales market hit record levels thanks to deals such as ABC’s remake of crime drama High Intellectual Potential, as the U.S. became the biggest buyer of content from the European country.
Annual stats from the Cnc (National Center for Cinema and the Moving Image) and Unifrance released this afternoon show sales of French TV programs reached a record €214.8M ($232M) in 2022, an increase of 15.4% year-on-year and 4.7% higher than in 2017, the previous record year. U.S. sales made up nearly €20M of the total.
However, drops in pre-sales and co-production business led to an overall 15% fall in French TV exports. Pre-sales were down 50.3% and co-productions dipped 38.4% dip against a record 2021. This means the overall figure was €319.6M, down from €375.9M last year.

1990’s Days of Thunder was the end of an era for Tom Cruise. It would be the last movie he’d make as part of his “youth” phase, which began with Risky Business. At the time, he was best known as the cocky young hot shot, but when this movie underperformed at the box office, Cruise took some time off and returned as a more seasoned leading man, with 1992’s A Few Good Men kicking off an unprecedented streak of hits. While Days of Thunder has a valued place in Tom Cruise’s filmography and remains a popular title, when it came out, the movie was considered such a disappointment that the movie’s two producers, Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckkeimer’s deal with Paramount Pictures came to a fractious end. So what happened?
“Top Gun on Wheels” – that’s what everyone called Days of Thunder in the summer of 1990. The studio.

The first time I saw Kill List, I was fascinated with the filmmaker behind it. As his work continued to grow, my appreciation for Ben Wheatley was only confirmed. With terrific features like Kill List, High-Rise, Free Fire, and the recent In The Earth, I was impressed with Wheatley’s choices. And then, he surprises once again, by taking on a gigantic Megalodon, and something that can be even more deadly, the extremely charismatic Jason Statham. Meg 2: The Trench is a new direction for the director, one that is far more of a spectacle than what we’ve seen from him before.
Recently, I sat down with the filmmaker, and as always he was incredibly kind and a joy to speak with. Ben opened up about taking on a film with an emphasis on visual effects and action. He discussed the creature design, and how he found himself involved with the sequel.

Most people spend their entire lives avoiding physical altercations, but in Miguel’s case, all he can think about is giving someone the gift of chin music in the Hulu Original film Miguel Wants to Fight. The Alchemist has returned with Flying High, an eight-song EP featuring Earl Sweatshirt, billy woods, Boldy James, and more. Listen to the EP and check out the music video for the opening track “Rip Tracy” below.
With soulful samples galore, Flying High shows off The Alchemist’s ability to craft velvety, lyric-centric hip-hop. “Rip Tracy,” which features Earl and woods, places the rappers’ calculated flows in the spotlight, while tracks like “Bless” boast melodic, jazzy arrangements. T.F, Mike, Sideshow, Larry June, and Jay Worthy all appear on the EP as well.
Like previous Alchemist releases — such as Lunch Meat, Bread, and This Thing of Ours 2 — Flying High begins with four tracks featuring lyrics, followed by instrumental versions of the same four tracks. Splitting it up this way, it makes it all the more easy to appreciate the balance between lyricism and sheer musical prowess that The Alchemist has perfected.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who stars as Destiny in “The Idol” — Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) manager — opens up on why co-creator Sam Levinson took over the much-discussed series and the likelihood of a second season.
If it weren’t for Levinson overhauling the show, Randolph wouldn’t be one of the only stabilizing individuals surrounding Depp’s sexualized pop star character. In the original version, helmed by Amy Seimetz, the actress’ role didn’t exist, she revealed to Variety, until it was scrapped and Levinson took over and hand-picked the star.
Randolph explained that Levinson re-worked the project next to the Weeknd to help bring the musician-turned-actor and series creator’s vision to life.

As we creep towards summer, Netflix has a hot new list of fresh content, including the final season of “Never Have I Ever,” the sophomore season of ‘Human Resources” and the highly anticipated sixth season of “Black Mirror.”
Kicking off the start of the month on mega streamer are lots of family-friendly goodies like both “Nanny McPhee” and “Nanny McPhee Returns,” “Kicking and Screaming,” “Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius” and the “Angry Birds Movie.” But the adults won’t be left out of the conversation, as more mature flicks and series like “Jarhead,” “Funny People” and “We’re the Millers” are also hitting the platform this month.
And it wouldn’t be Netflix without its originals. “Take Care of Maya,” “Extraction 2” and the Sarah Snook-led “Run Rabit Run” will land on the site in June. And even if this isn’t enough to get you watching, Netflix will be streaming its Tudum festival on Saturday,...

The Return to Horror High episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Travis Hopson, Edited by Victoria Verduzco, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
The 1980s, especially the mid-1980s, were basically the heyday of slasher films, many of them were being released each year in theaters and direct-to-video, some of them making huge box office numbers like the Nightmare on Elm Street movies, the Friday the 13th movies, and the Halloween movies. Non-franchise films were not as big both financially and critically but they didn’t do too badly either. Then came Return to Horror High in 1987 (watch it Here). Some would say that the film was ahead of its time, being a very meta horror comedy about slasher films, having endings within endings, and twisting the sub-genre on its head. Killer Mike’s Michael is the Mc’s first solo album since he and rapper/producer El-p formed Run the Jewels over a decade ago. Boasting a different sound and mood than the duo’s four collaborative albums, Michael emphasizes Killer Mike’s Atlanta heritage by harkening back to a style of Southern rap influenced by gospel, soul, and blues.
Traces of more contemporary Atl sounds like trap music are palpable on “Run,” which features Atlanta native Young Thug, though tracks rife with religious imagery like “High and Holy” and “Don’t Let the Devil” lean heavier on warm pianos and organs than cicada-style hi-hat fills. Unlike the more synth-based production of, say, RTJ4, most of Michael was created with live instrumentation to complement samples of Curtis Mayfield, Three 6 Mafia, and others.

Nirmala’s wedding ceremony provides the last scene where everyone — Devi’s family and friends — come together before the show ends. The scene meant a lot to Poorna Jagannathan, who plays Nalini, Nirmala’s daughter-in-law and Devi’s mother.
“I’m just remembering a lot of people wrapped that day so it was very intense, very emotional. Yeah. The wedding scene is very symbolic of the show. It’s something that happened to Mindy’s dad. Mindy’s dad got remarried later in life. It’s something that happened to my mom at 64 and it’s a storyline that is unexpected,...

Hours after NBC made decisions on the bulk of its bubble comedy fare, ABC has passed on nearly all of its remaining pilots.
The Disney-backed broadcaster has passed on dramas The Hurt Unit and Judgment as well as comedies Keeping It Together (formerly Drop-Off) and Public Defenders, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Of the four drama and two comedy pilots that ABC developed this season, only the Good Doctor spinoff, The Good Lawyer, remains in contention. (Kaitlin Olson drama High Potential was previously ordered to series.)
Also remaining on the bubble are comedy Home Economics (awaiting word on a fourth season) and The Rookie spinoff, Feds (awaiting word on season two). Sources say producers ABC Signature is expected to shop medical drama The Hurt Unit, which counts Ben McKenzie and Michelle Ortiz among its cast.
Reps for ABC declined comment.

In 1995, we screamed, “Hack the planet!” Today, my mom can watch any movie on her phone. When we walk around with computers in our pockets, fantasies about jacking into cyberspace and accessing vast amounts of information seem quaint, if not outright laughable. But it’s that very mundane nature that makes cyberpunk such an important genre, even in 2023.
The cyberpunk genre began in literature, first in stories published in the UK magazine New Worlds and later in novels from writers such as William Gibson (Neuromancer), J.G. Ballard (High Rise), and Philip K. Dick. These writers took a darker look at the technology of the future, showing how new inventions did nothing to change inequality and corruption, only reinforcing the worst parts of humanity.
For most people, cinematic cyberpunk is synonymous with 1982’s Blade Runner, an adaption of the Dick book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.
