Decent one - 7/10
sujith789_reviews25 September 2021
  • This is a decent movie with unique story.

  • First half of this movie has its own mystery elements and second half is more of human emotions.

  • Suraj's acting was of different level. Not a fan of Tovino's acting, but this movie he really improved. Aiswarya Lekshmi was good.

  • This is not a 10/10 movie, but it's a decent one to watch.

Is it the acting or the screenplay?
cksquare17 September 2021
Difficult to single it out, but worth a watch.

Suraaj or Tovino, and Aishwarya too - play out their roles beautiful in this touching family drama. There is an element of mystery, just barely tho', 'cause that was an easy guess.

There was potential in the theme. The first reaction after watching the movie was how the Padmarajan-Bharathan era used to have been so much better. Those movies used to just feel right, used to communicate directly to the heart.

Kaanekaane has a good subject. However, there were many half baked portions to the script. The movie and the viewer end up in different places at the end of the movie. Performances were less than stellar. Camera work also felt very plain.

"Paalnilavin" song was really good. This is the kind of movie that has the potential to be a tear-jerker in the hands of yester-year masters, and also had the potential for remarkable standout performances. However, performances were below par. Suraj Venjaramoodu was definitely not at his best in this movie.

Bobby-Sanjay duo did not match up to themselves in their writing either. The turn around realization moment for the main protagonist is almost infantile.

"Joseph" was a movie with an incredible theme whose execution did not take the most advantage of it. This one is similar. What remained as far as it's experience was a strain full of start imperfections. I did start with high expectations for the movie. It was a good subject but did not hit the mark in terms of it's writing, performances, execution.

Fatherhood and complexities
snxmjhzq17 September 2021
We have seen heartbroken fathers onscreen, revengeful fathers avenging their children onscreen, often we see portrayal of the grief of mothers and the eternal connection between children and mothers. But here's a movie which portrays a heartbroken, helpless, revengeful at the same time remorseful father. Fatherhood also needs to be talked about. Thank you for that. Layered and complex characters, heartfelt moments, a heart wrenching yet heart warming end. The script becomes predictable in its course eventually yet keeps up the intrigue. Performances are noteworthy.

Must watch movie ,,,, immaculate experience kaaneekaane
niyazfbi17 September 2021
I could not get my eyes off the screen the whole time . It showcases the human mind and how it will change for the situations. I was in awe for a really long time after I watched this master piece created by the director Manu Ashokan after his debut in Uyare. A perfect emotional rollercoaster.. iam still not out from the movie yet.

A promising director and iam sure that he will create wonders in Malayalam film industry.

Worth a watch for Suraj's performance alone! [+64%]

It's safe to say that writers Bobby-Sanjay have recovered some of their lost mojo with Kaanekkaane. The material they've written isn't really genre-bending or eye-opening per se; in fact, it is as generic a plot as you can imagine. Yet, the performances (Suraj Venjaramoodu towering over the rest) and the effective use of flashbacks see it through. While Kaanekkaane can be perceived as a character-piece for Dy. Tahsildar Paul Mathai (Suraj), it also aspires to be an intense, emotional drama with some thriller elements. While the slow-burn revelatory style of the film may turn off a few, this is actually one of the film's strengths if you can disregard the almost-soap-opera-like approach at times.

Why I mention soap operas is not just because of the clichéd plotting - the style of making (by director Manu Ashokan) itself is a constant reminder. This, I felt, was strongly the case in his debut film Uyare as well. The unsavory visuals and the background score (throwing emotional subtlety out of the frame every single time) pull the film down sometimes. Yet, as the doting father whose life is turned upside down by his daughter's accidental passing and later by his (earlier) son-in-law, Suraj's performance is commendable. He exhibits the right amount of inner rage, and is determined to investigate certain incidents further to know if his gut is right.

Since the flashbacks intercut with present-day events constantly, they come across as a means to pick on the viewers' brains (as to which character you should eventually side with) and offer mild thrills in the process. However, the ending is subdued and possibly, the laziest bit of writing in the entire screenplay. It feels contrived as hell, trying desperately to offer that quintessential happy ending. Tovino Thomas (as Allen) and Aishwarya Lekshmi (as Sneha, Allen's wife) are both adequate - though the latter's past decisions lack the clarity that you'd expect. This is easily overshadowed by the flashbacks portraying the easy-going camaraderie between Allen and Paul.

All said and done, it comes down to a moral science questionnaire: Does a certain character feel guilty about a certain incident? If so, how guilty does he feel? Should he be punished for his actions? How can the punishment be exacted? The good thing here is that Kaanekkaane doesn't try to provide answers for all of it; instead choosing to say that both guilt and grief can be overcome by humans with time and circumstances. This is a better writing effort by Bobby-Sanjay overall, almost making me forget their last venture - One.

The movie has an amazing story line and casting was very well hand picked. The concept, the making and the music... everything was on the proportion. Heart smiled and mind blown!

Yet another noteworthy film by Malayalam Cinema in 2021.. What Svati Bhatkal's "Rubaru Roshni" tried to convey through documantary, Kaanekkaane explores as a Feature Film.

Kaanekkaane (2021) : Movie Review -

Malayalam Cinema is just kicking every competitor out by a margin when it comes to delivering quality content this year. Due to pandemic many films have decided to be on hold so we are getting less films which ultimately is causing less quality and not just quantity. While every other industry is struggling to deliver two to three classic movies in 2021 (including Hollywood), Malayalam industry is running a riot. If i am not miscalculating then Kaanekkaane is like 9th or 10th quality product delivered by Malayalam cinema in 2021 so far. The number might go higher in remaining 3 months of this year and the final count of Malayalam Cinema would be higher than combined total of rest of the Cinema Industries in India. I hope, i am not exaggerating and i will surely be happy to make a stats of comparison by the year end.

Kaanekkaane is a film that gives a new dimensions to human conscience through cinematic liberty. What we have earlier seen in Drishyam 2 this year but here it's different, rather say it's completely opposite figuratively. Deputy Tahsildar Paul Mathai arrives in town for some court matters. He is warmly received by his son-in-law Allen. Wondering when he would see his grandson again, Paul is leaving Allen's home, when something catches his eye. There comes the shift in the lives which leads to an emotional and thrilling journey of all these characters. It reminded me of Svati Bhatkal's Documentary 'Rubari Roshni' (2019), produced by Aamir Khan Productions which gave a thought-provoking message of Forgiveness. Sometimes it's better to forgive and let go the culprit than seeking revenge and all these stories in there were coming from true events and so it became an eternal Classic for me. Here, Kaanekkaane gets the same but with a single episode unlike multiple stories in Rubaru Roshni. Kaanekkaane has got a treatment of a thriller and the atmospheric genius work can be notice through consistently hopping background score and excellent Cinematography.

The performances in the film have made it even better. All the characters look real excluding couple of bluffs. Tovino Thomas, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Aishwarya Lekshmiand Shruti Ramachandran and everyone in the supporting cast have delivered upto their potential. The screenplay is slow at the beginning with those pauses and all but after a while the same pauses start looking thrilling and give you chills. The storytelling becomes more intense and matured as the time passes and because it has a runtime of about 120 minutes, it holds pretty much fine despite slow start.

The writing makes the job easy for the director as it tries to gamble within a offbeat theme. The conflict between two different human conscience is not a regular thing in any cinema industry. If you remember Hollywood Classic 'Ox Bow Incident' (1943) which gave a staggering speech on human conscience then i don't think any film has come close to that in these 8 long decades. So, it's an unusual thing and the way it is goofed up with human relations, guilt, compassion and forgiveness it all makes it super exclusive in a way. There are few things that have gone wrong but it's not a big issue as Director Manu Ashokan has managed to find a getaway to a certified triumph. In final words, another fabulous Malayalam Film this year and very close to a Classic tag.

RATING - 7/10*

The Malayalam film industry to stop flexing so much.
TreeFiddy5326 October 2021
Someone please ask the Malayalam film industry to stop flexing so much. Tell them they've made some really good movies for the next five years and that they need to let others catch up. I was looking forward to this movie and it didn't disappoint.

The trailer looked like a family drama, but the genre listed was "Thriller". It's got drama and turns out, it's a thriller, it's a murder mystery, it's a story on relationships, morality, loneliness, forgiveness, revenge, and so on, everything so seamlessly edited together that'll make you go "Stop doing this to the other film industries xD"

The acting - Suraj Venjaramoodu - somebody give him a national award, if he hasn't received one already. They owe him awards in back-payments from Android Kunjappan and before. Tovino and Aishwarya were really good also. The storytelling was really good, subverts your expectations, complemented really well by the editing.

There are layers that keep shifting and you get to discover what this slowburn is all about. There are enough clues left here and there for you to guess something is going wrong. Blink and you'll miss.

Would totally recommend.

Slow Burning Family Drama
nairtejas17 September 2021
Kaanekkaane (As You Watch) is a slow burner family drama about man's vices. It starts to give a whiff of something amiss right from the initial frames thanks to the haunting score which I feel I have heard somewhere else before. Suraj is terrific and Tovino comes close second but somehow Aishwarya felt like she was not in control. Maybe it's her character. A decent late night movie experience at the home theatre (again thanks to the score) but somehow the end looked moral-less to me. Also reminded of Vikruthi for some reason. Worth a watch.

Dissatisfying
Bhomiq18 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Why are Malayalis so dumb? Seriously, this movie had so much potential (especially something like a good revenge thriller) but it just turned out to be a dissatisfying, dramatic joke that falls extremely flat as it nears the end. The start was promising and while it had its tense moments, the story just wasn't good enough. If I was in Suraj's shoes, I'd be fighting for justice for my kid not seeing the chick and the dude that ultimately ruined my kids life, happy. It's ridiculous that this is what people label a 'good' movie nowadays.

Above Average
nebinjohns18 September 2021
'Kaanekkane' is the product from Manu Ashokan after wonderful flick 'Uyare'. It's a film talking about a father have losts his daughter. 'Kaanekkane' is above average for me. First hours of cinema is very encaging. Later, movie lost the flow & nothing exciting for watching. Realisation of characters is highly protrayed in this story. You can watch this movie without any doubts. It's not a disappointing thing.

Kaanekkaane
gaathakalyani26 September 2021
The movie was such a great experience throughout. Even if its ground plot is familiar the movie stands out for being different in the method of conveying the same. Suraj actually gives an adrenaline rush with his perfomance. Tovino and Aiswarya lakshmi combo creates goosebumps and also they have one of their best performances in the movie. I think one will feel the greatness of the work more when he approches it emosionally than a bit critically.. And it will bring tears in your eyes.

They have taken an absolutely out of box story and make it correct way to reach and make connect for the audience. Actual story revloves around the three immense characters that written well in the beginning itself. A great effort and that too not went in vein, thats the victory here. Tovino is Superb.

Good movie but couldnt find a justice since its supporting an extramarital affair
anuroxy-9655118 September 2021
Movie is different from portraying the same good or either bad character from starting till the end. It more over shows a reality stage of an extramarital relations and complications. But still couldnt see a justice or couldnt get over the plot, since am a karma believer the aishwarya lakshmi's character shouldnt or should not have a happy ending.

😤😔😭

Well written Classic !!
grarunkumar199419 September 2021
Kaanekkaane is a slow paced thriller that grips onto your curiousity unhurriedly. It does take its own time to establish the characters, the relations and the plot.

Once it does, there is a plot point where the viewers are dragged into the mystery, along with Suraj's character.

It does ascend from there and reaches a climax that is pleasantly satisfying.

Suraj and Tovino play the lead roles along with Aiswarya Lekshmi and Prem Prakash playing supporting roles.

This is definitely one of the better films that has come out recently in malayalam after the OTT wave kick started with Drishyam 2. Having a lower budget and lesser production cost has affected the quality of a lot of such films but not this. This film has a screenplay strong as concrete and so are the dialogues.

At a time when drone shots are overused, this film strangely makes us miss such shots, atleast in the climax.

Manu Ashokan who did a good job by directing 'UYARE' repeated his quality work here too.

Suraj wasn't surprising as he did magic in 'ANDROID KUNJAPPAN' and 'DRIVING LICENSE', he did the same here.

What surprises us is Tovino who did a fantastic job in a role that could've easily made him sweat or overexpress at times, given the plethora of emotions he has to portray. He did a very matured and controlled acting that makes us believe he is the character. Aiswarya too demonstrated her talents to show the emotional turmoils the wife character goes through. Special mention to the kid who is pretty much the better actor than other kids of last 2 years.

The film is strong, gripping, thrilling and ofcourse the return of writer duo Bobby-Sanjay who gave us masterpieces 'Ayalum Njanum Thammil' 'Mumbai Police' etc and the recent disaster 'ONE'. Hope the writers stay onto the track now.

Overall, a very well made film that does awake one's mind with beautifully acted characters.
