Divert my focus
ks-6050012 December 2021
Did I watch a movie or just enjoy the scenery? Didn't go Europe for 3 years this make me recall the footsteps when I travel, this part makes me rate up a bit for all the beautiful landscape from my memory. In some level, I admire the filmography more than the story. The story is not bad I need to emphasis but seems many similar lesbian and complex relationships been watched before.

A fairly charming character study
smatysia28 April 2022
A fairly charming character study. I'm a bit surprised that I felt this way about it, since none of the characters are particularly likable. Many will consider it slow, as there are no car chases, explosions, or comic book heroes. Maybe that's part of its charm. Lovely photography of really nice scenery in the South of France. The lesbian and polyamory angles will appeal to some, and turn others off. None of the acting hit any false notes, at least for me.

Good

The best thing about this film is its atmosphere rather than its plot. It's calm, soothing, summery and delivers beautiful vibes but has a poor uninteresting story. Storytelling is very good though. Performances are good as well.

La France profonde...
st_stoimenov23 November 2021
That is a phrase that denotes the existence of deep, and profoundly "French" aspects of the culture of French provincial towns and of French village life, which withstand the "dominant ideologies" and the "state approved narratives" of multiculturalism (i.e. Anti-identitarianism) and progressivism (i.e. Anti-traditionalism).

"La France profonde" -- not unlike the rest of France -- is irreparably poisoned and on its death bed. For decades now the spirit of Frenchness itself is being deformed by the relentless intravenous infusion of vile and particularly malignant cultural pathogens.

Let the French ethnic body's decaying corpse serves us all other Europeans as a reminder and a warning what awaits us if we allow it.

This is what I took from this movie... Sadness for a once glorious country's utter downfall.

Pure, Unadulterated Garbage!
cruzn-999033 March 2022
The hype on this movie appears to have been planted by representatives and friends of the producers, as it lacks a shred of honesty.

Yes, Idella Johnson has a lot of promise as an actress, and so does Sivan Noam Shimon. But their casting is totally wasted.

Ma Belle, My Beauty could not be more boring, or frankly, more depressing. In fact, if you're already depressed, this could really put you over the top, or right on the bottom.

There's nothing likable about most of the characters, and the tried and trite technique of trying to show people in pretend real-life circumstances and dialogue fails miserably.

Whether a woman who has lost her confidence as a performer should return to an open marriage to get it back isn't a strong enough theme to carry this movie, especially when the "third" party is so moody and unappealing.

If I wanted to return to my lesbian or polyamorous ways for inspiration, this film would not only kill any seedlings of inspiration, but make me want to join a nunnery instead, it's that painful!

Even though this horrid flick was free to watch, it was so bad that I still wanted my money back, or at least my time.

For your own sanity, skip this movie entirely.

Good exploration of poly relationship
sfdphd10 April 2022
The French location. The actors, and the music are all beautiful. The real reason to see the film is to appreciate the complexity of a poly relationship that lasts for awhile but eventually ends due to one partner being unable to share the other. This is unfortunately the fate of many poly relationships.

I am fortunate to be in a successful happy poly relationship lasting almost 28 years so I know that they can work but most people just can't handle the intensity and cannot accept the boundaries. This is a good film to see if you are contemplating getting involved in a poly relationship.

Good Film
susan-3248922 February 2022
Occasionally felt like a tourist advertisement for the south of France with the beautiful cinematography. My partner repeatedly commented on how hot Bertie (one of the women from the polyamorous relationship) is.

All the relationships felt real and the ending left me thinking about the story for longer than usual.

Romantic , playful, and at times sad.

Soft scenes with natural lighting and soulful music.

You get an authentic view of a polyamorous relationship where each character explores what they can and can't be for each other and the balance between their personal lives and their careers.

A tender, honest and genuine love story
lorenzoberardi25 November 2021
An intimate look into the uncertainty of a tender, unusual love story developing between social "pressure" and personal changes. The narration is purposely calm, yet very intense, that Hill managed to balance perfectly counting on some great acting and a strong photography. A gorgeous French landscape and an extemporaneousy beautiful soundtrack works as a serendipitous background to the brief period of the protagonists lives captured in the movie. I strongly suggest to watch it!

Southern France, southern meanderings. Yes. Or should I say Oui? Give this one a try and you are gonna fall in love with it. It's got all the lovey, dreamy, swishy kind of things that you're looking for.

Authentic and real - don't miss Ma Belle, My Beauty
charlotte_collins7 December 2021
Ma Belle, My Beauty is a beautiful film portraying a nuanced and layered love story. The film centers the relationship between Bertie and Lane, two women who have loved and hurt each other, as they navigate their past and present. Unlike many films these days, this movie isn't trying to make a point or spell out a foregone conclusion, rather it's an authentic and real depiction of navigating identity, communication, and connection.

Set in a beautiful location in the South of France, the film is a sensory delight that transports you to a strong sense of place through the attention and care it gives to sights, smells, sounds - a deep and genuine love note to the Cevennes region in France.

100% recommend and am excited to see what this filmmaker does next.

Definitely worth the watch for anyone who loves travel, nuance, and relationship dramas
meagenm23 November 2021
I am so glad I decided to stream Ma Belle, My Beauty!! I had seen some of the great reviews popping up here and there. Bored at home one afternoon, I saw the Apple trailer and decided to settle in for cozy watch from my couch. My husband watched it with me and loved it. We paused the movie many times so we could discuss the storyline - we were so wrapped up in it! I lived in France and studied French literature for many years. This felt like a beautiful journey back to all the wonderful and challenging aspects of living abroad. There were so many beautiful layers of culture and understanding laid out in this film. National identity, gender identity, sexual identity, professional identity... nuances of love, responsibility, loyalty, creativity, citizenship... it all overlaps in a thoughtful way. I absolutely found myself caught up in the journey of these characters - loving them, hating them, and then loving them again. I am not surprised at all that it received fan favorite at Sundance. Absolutely recommend!

Worth a watch!
abefelix20 November 2021
There's a lot of goodness packed into this complex, daring, sultry, sensory trip to the South of France. If you are curious about the inner dynamics (highs and lows) of polyamorous relationships, if you want to be among the first to discover a breakthrough charismatic talent in Idella Johnson, if you want to see an indie director achieve the impossible (taking a splinter crew from New Orleans to France on a micro budget to successfully produce a film) if you want to hear a lush soundtrack by Mahmoud Chouki, if you want to see a film make the spiritual connection between France and New Orleans all in 90 minutes....then this film might be for you.

Don't miss Ma Belle, it's beautiful!
charleshill-3708118 November 2021
If you missed your summer vacation in southern Europe this year, no worries, Ma Belle, My Beauty will transport you there for a fraction of the cost. Beautifully filmed in the south of France amidst vineyards; charming market towns; old stone farmhouses and breathtaking scenery, you will want to jump into the set and follow along with the characters as they navigate the twists and turns of a broken polyamorous relationship. The jazzy soundtrack adds another level of enjoyment to the experience. Keep a bottle of wine and the corkscrew handy. Well worth the price of admission!

an intimate story- visually rich
dylanjohntran18 November 2021
Ma Belle is gorgeous- Hill's narrative is artfully written; they guide us through the relationship's dynamics with a nuanced dance of perspectives, sowing empathy and resentment in kind as the throuple's history is revealed. The acting is excellent (there's a particular confrontation scene between two characters in later in the film that HITS). The score is vibrant, with an exceptionally tasteful/immersive use of diegetic music. The visual language is expressive, warm and languid, while still authentically communicating loss, loneliness, abandonment, etc. 10/10 worth the watch.

Really enjoyed it.
ssvjnsd24 November 2021
I want to add that there was a sex scene with partial nudity a little over half way through that lasted probably 30 seconds or so.

Easy to skip.

The movie is cute and fun and had a really beautiful setting and I would definitely watch it again.
