Incredibly laughable...
InsightfulCritic5 April 2022
You know when movies are so bad you actually laugh. This was just below that, which means it was super ridiculously bad, but not enough to have fun laughing at it. It was just bad.

The production is ba, i think this was filmed with iPhone 6. Acting sub par. The plot is ok but it's just d- sci fi. I could only take about 10 minutes of this movie. Hope someone likes it.

I give it 2 for the effort
ralphhelm-697455 April 2022
Oh my, where to start?

The acting: It's inexistant. It is clear and obvious NONE of the people involved in front of the camera - as you can see I refrain from calling them 'actors' - do have ANY knowledge of how to act .... or any skill to start with.

The filming: Someone mentioned an iPhone 6 being used to film this movie and I wouldn't be surprised if this was actually the case. It's so amateurish I would say I have seen better cat and food pictures on social media.

The effects: Yes, I wrote effects, because calling them 'special effects' would imply they are any special .... which they are not. Someone thought it's a great idea to stick a Laerdahl ressuscitation doll's face on a human and call that an android. Believe me, there's more android in a Samsung Galaxy than in this stinker.

The plot: Yes, there is one, which is already more than the rest. Is it any good? Difficult to say because it's difficult to make it out under the amateurish acting, filming, editing and effects.

So why two stars you might ask? Because the cover is well done and actually tricked me into starting to watch this garbage.

Yeah, it was definitely as bad as you'd assume...
paul_haakonsen5 April 2022
Well, sure the movie's synopsis sounded interesting enough, and it was essentially why I sat down to watch the 2022 sci-fi movie "Prototype" from writer Sam Gurney and director Jack Peter Mundy. Sure, I hadn't even heard about "Prototype" prior to watching it, and I am not particularly keen on sci-fi movies. But the synopsis made it sound interesting enough.

And what sounded good on script and paper should perhaps have stayed on paper, because the transition from script to the screen wasn't a good one. The whole movie was just oozing with amateurish atmosphere. And it sort of held the movie back in a very bad way.

The storyline was okay, but not great though. I will say that the movie can be watched, and perhaps even enjoyed if you are a sci-fi fan and can get past the amateurish feel that flows from every single aspect of the movie.

The special effects and designs of the androids was just laughably bad. It was so painstakingly obviously just an actor wearing a synthetic latex face over his own. And no effort had been made to make a smooth transition from the eye sockets of the latex mask to the actor's own eyes. Nor had they even bothered to try to fuse the mouth of the mask and actor together in a seemingly meld. It was just painful to watch, and it made the movie feel even more amateurish and low budget than necessary.

This movie was a swing and a miss, even for a sci-fi movie. And this is definitely not a movie that I would recommend you waste your time, money or effort on, not even if you are a sci-fi aficionado.

My rating of "Prototype" lands on a two out of ten stars.

Bad...Really Bad
poko-496565 April 2022
Its another low budget sci-fi. You shouldnt compare that kind movies with known sci-fi movies but there is things not about budget. Masks, lipsyncs, dialogs are very bad. Lighting and cinematography not bad but why always close shots, is this daily soap opera ?. Dear cameraman and boom operator, next time check reflective surfaces twice.

10001100100010111010110110001 = Total Programe System Failure! Hard Drive Erasure Reccomended!
silicontourist22 May 2022
Isaac Asimov (the acclaimed Sci-Fi book author) wrote the 3 rules of law concerning, and for, Robot manufacturing... 1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

2. A robot must obey the orders given to it by any human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the 1st Law.

3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the 1st or 2nd Laws.

Unbeknownst to many he later added a law numbered "ZERO", before the first one and which has the highest importance: 0. A robot may not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.

The film begins with a Robot 1 prototype killing a worker from the company that has invented it and is testing them and, we NEVER find out why it has broken the Robot primary directive law of no harm to humans. It progresses like this with never telling the viewer anything about anything!

Nothing to enjoy in this film offering of Robot's 1 and 2 who, are opposing home help family robots. 1 is a prototype model - which is very obvious - and 2 is the new superior improved model. For some reason 2 has become sentient (with the same technical flawed reasoning that the Sky-Net) Terminators had. But, as it is an extremely low, VERY LOW, budget and possibly filmed with an i-Phone, there is no plot development or story arc given to viewers at all. What we do get as viewers however is, a VERY badly acted, dull rendition of an idea that has been done on better scales before!

This is the second film this year that I have had to use my Jedi knowledge of controlling the "Force" (to impose a top level of patience and complete concentration) to in order to wade through an unbelievable heap of junk from the Dark Side!

With visuals that are worse than a moshed together Halloween costume, it had nothing that could ease my displeasure through a single grin etc to break the humdrum routine. A grimace is all I could pull from my inner muscle storage of face expressions.

The only thing good I can say about this film is that its Poster is very nice (as a ex graphic designer and as an artist I notice those things first...usually) though, It is also to blame for my ending up watching this dreary techno trash!

What a Crock!
gbftl11 April 2022
Dreadful and woefully bad acting all done on a budget of £5. I liked the little girls trainers and I had hoped that "one" was going to strangle Roger with his own tie and then beat the hell out of Michael.

Just to get it over and done with!

Everything is bad, really bad
lukemurray-4084617 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Don't even know where to start.

Awful acting, really awful. It's like they found some random people to act it out.

Plot holes everywhere. I mean, the postie was killed and no one cared. That scene was absolute garbage by the way. The company making these robots wasn't shut down even after the first models killed people. They just carried on making more They kept referring to the daughter as brother and him??? Is this some kind of virtue signal?

The costumes.....wow, no expense spared. A latex mask that didn't fit properly and some overalls. A couple of random American actors thrown in for some reason. One just as randomly, getting killed by his headphones and finishing with a really poor attempt at humour.

Oh and the robot fight scene....haha. Because they were robots it was all in slow motion. Number one managed to get punched to floor by the son but manages to take numerous blows by a super strong robot??? Consistency please The guys wife appears at his place of work and no one questions the cuts around her mouth and the bruises on her face??? I wonder who paid money to invest in this venture. I'd be asking for it back. Is there no standard anymore? Please, if you read this and I'm wrong in any way, I'll hold my hands up and say I was wrong.

IMPOSSIBLE TO WATCH
bencrea5 April 2022
I have no idea who made that mask but it's the worst i've ever seen.

You can clearly see a mans eyes and skin under it? Why did they even bother?

You can't take any of this movie serious with that going on, besides that the dialogue is so ridiculous.

I can't rate this any lower than 1 but I wish I could.

SOOO BAD!

It's rough but lacks a lot
JosefinaDwild19 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Rough watch but decided to see why it was a 2.9 online. It's actually that bad. I liked some of the art direction with the androids but the face was just so MEH. U can see the actors inside doing the best they can with what they got. The acting was ok but not very connected with the horrible situations or moments. Very low budget in the awkward kills. Like theres a moment where #2 grabs the mail man n stabs him in the eye. The angle of where she stabs him and then the body shows the pen in the forehead and not the eye. That made my laugh badly! Later when she has a hissy fit cuz the teenager became captain of the team. She broke "glass drink ware" but u can tell it's plastic how the sound fx don't match the bending n popping vs shattering it's supposed to do. Plot is a mess and very repetitive to whats been already done before. I was confused about something. The intro shows #1 go ballistic n kill people then a flashback to the main story and then they go straight to a the end after the mom n kids ran for it. I may have dozed off at the end. But overall, mayor disappointment on the conclusion. Seriously wanted to see a battle between both bots but nope, no fight, no robot army either. I think this movie would be great for like B movie night fest. Het a couple drinks in ya and just waste an hour.gave a three for the art direction on #2 but thats it. They should've tweaked the script and hired a better crew.

One of the worst - with one fake review written!
slruegg11 April 2022
Not only is this a horrible movie, the ONLY positive review here on IMDB was this one:

"Very Thought Provoking, A Gem.

Petermundy-898528 April 2022 Very interesting film with insight and imagination. If a film makes you think, that's got to be a good thing. Very impressed. I was particularly taken by the fine directing and good writing. Also the actors should be complimented. The costumes were very convincing."

Ummm... That review was written by "Peter Mundy" John Peter Mundy was the "DIRECTOR" of this atrocity of a "film. FAKE REVIEW meant to try to boost his score on IMDB.

This "film" has the worst "costumes, the worst writing, the worst "acting," the worst "filming (iPhone 6??) and the worst "Director" ever! Don't waste your time on this!

Science Fiction at it's WORST
franksetlock11 April 2022
I teach film class on a high school level and the videos submitted by my students, on the first day of class, without ant background in film, were BETTER BY FAR than this "movie"! The acting is terrible and the "special effects", mainly the makeup on the "Prototypes" was absolutely horrific! (I've seen over-the counter children's Halloween masks with the elastic band on the back look better than the ones in the film!) Scene transitions and camera angles are amateurish and saying it was shot with an iPhone 6 makes iPhones look bad! (Maybe an iPhone One with a 2.0 megapixel camera but even that's pushing it!) Don't waste the electric current to watch this one...trust me...it's really bad!

Embarrassingly Poor
fluffchop27 January 2023
It's got some visual issues with the robots and the acting is very British. It comes off like an old episode of Dr. Who which to me is just the lamest show that was on in the 70s and for some reason still has fans. Some people actually like crap that has no budget and is passed off as sci-fi. That's where this movie is coming from. Looking at it from that perspective the movie has a plot that shows us robots run amuck if let into the world. It doesn't show us why they do this. I think that's interesting because one would think the first thing to ask is why the androids went crazy on us? Then you could explore how to wrangle them into submission again and then fix the issues. That might give you broadly speaking three main acts. There could be any number of variations on what those acts are. Also I thought they should have explored a theme of the unhinged father and frightened mother as being some sort of catalyst for the bad behavior of the robot. Anyway enough words on this.

Prototype
BandSAboutMovies6 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Soon, life-like androids with artificial intelligence - Anton LaVey would have been happy about this - have been created to do the household work that humans have no interest in doing themselves. One of those androids, One (Luke Robinson), has been part of creator Roger Marshall's (Jamie Robertson, Medusa) family but now the inventor plans on making a new model, things go wrong.

Directed by Jack Peter Mundy (Amityville Scarecrow, Dinosaur Hotel) and written by Sam Gurney, Prototype introduces a new android named Two (Zoe Purdy) who has near superhuman capabilities but when it begins to malfunction, the lives of Roger's entire family are in danger.

I really liked that One and Two have a definite alien future look despite the low budget of this film. While the promotional materials take so much from Ex-Machina, I prefer the just not yet a human appearance of the movie.

Can the Director Please Refund My Money
pararealevents16 May 2023
This is easily one of the worst movies that's ever been my misfortune to watch.

And I paid to watch it.

Not quite sure at what point someone thought this was worthy of releasing? Or did they just plough through the dreadful script and horrific acting? Phoney pointless American accents, ridiculous makeup and some awful dialogue-can any of the production team say they are proud of this? The actors must be livid it turned out like this - absolutely hokum.

If the moral was AI can't be trusted then it failed. If the moral was that domestic violence goes on behind closed doors, it failed.

It failed.

Even the end credit music. I mean. What.

No. Avoid. At all costs.

Horrible movie
zxywgqtrpb4 January 2023
From the second I saw the first robot I should have stopped watching but I was just way too curious to see how it ends, both robots in this movie are clearly 2 people wearing masks and overalls with some paint on their necks

The movie is garbage, there are no special effects. There are no great action scenes it's barely a sci fi The acting is really bad and there seems to be no plot or story line that makes sense

The movie ultimately deserves no stars but for rating purposes I have to give it a one

I would not recommend anyone to watch this movie there is greater ways to spend your time, I do not wish to see the sequel.

A Frightening And Profound Portrait Of A Digital World, With A Chilling Plot And Well-Written Script
rannynm13 May 2022
Prototype, a frightening and profound portrait of a digital world, will spellbind viewers of all ages. Its chilling plot and well-written script combine with rather realistic special effects to make for an immersive viewing experience.

In the near future, androids with artificial intelligence are being created to help people with menial household tasks. The first prototype, One, created by Roger Marshall (Jamie Robertson) and tested by his family, proves to be popular. Roger has been working on a new model, Two, with improved features, but when things take a turn for the worse, human emotion is weighed against scientific progress and robotic efficiency.

The plot is the most compelling part of Prototype, and the film is very well written. The casting too works wonders. Jamie Robertson is phenomenal in his role as Roger Marshall, the mercurial inventor intent on revolutionizing the technology space. He delivers his dialogue with conviction and passion; I truly felt threatened by his character at times. Actor Ben Reid's character (Roger's son) is intended to emulate his father and Reid works hard to model himself after Robertson's character. Danielle Scott, who plays the wife Shelley Marshall, perfectly plays the role of a well-meaning housewife who is willing to do anything to protect her family. A trite character though it may be, Scott's take on Shelley is fresh and unique. The cinematography complements the dark and suspenseful theme, as several scenes play with light.

Prototype is just as much about entertainment as it is a lesson to value the technology around us, and yet to not let it take over our lives. The film contains scenes suggesting domestic abuse and a murder scene.

I give Prototype 4.5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 13 to 18, plus adults. Prototype will be available Digitally on April 5, 2022.

I don't get the low reviews
andrescobarsilva27 August 2023
This is one great sci-fi movie in my opinion. Grant it it might not be as fast paced, or as your typical hollywood sci-fi action stuff, but it was original and as worthy as other sci-fi movies. It builds up gradually, trust me. The actors do a decent job. It is a small budget film, so dont expect big FX. My mind was blown with a scene in this movie, and I bet yours will be as well, give it a chance, it was fun! I was baffled by all the negative reviews. It seems to me that some people dont know what scifi is lol. This movie does deserve a watch, if you are a fan of the genre. Now i am just filling up because I already got my message across. Go watch it, you will not be disappointed.
