Not one thing thats good in it
wiredarp21 June 2021
Terrible, really. The acting is atrocious in the most part, especially the boy, who reads his lines like its a school play. The plot is less than rudimentary and virtually anyone could write something better. The most laughable part are the two 'natives', one of which looks like he'd be more at home on an Aussie beach than prancing around in warpaint. Since I laughed in disbelief (rather similar to seeing 'Amy' the gorilla the first time in 'Congo') i gave this movie a very generous 2 stars.

I can't think of a single thing that made the experience worthwhile. Just give it a miss.

Quite a mess....

Really couldn't follow it! Seems the editing is all out of whack! One minute he is walking through the woods, the next it's months later and he's bloodied? Lost the plot .. didn't get to halfway.

The story is somehow interesting. The script is good but the acting is terrible.

Agree with the naysayers..
rago-5221926 June 2021
The raves for this film are way out of proportion!!

I think those who we're involved and had some skin in this film went a little too obviously overboard in reviews.. yes it's an Indi and i get it it, low budget etc but I watched the whole thing and have to agree that it just was not very good.

Acting was sub par and yes the young boy appeared to be reading his lines wth forced emotion... the worst kind that u cannot ignore while watching and it just constantly reminds you that this is a sub par low budget movie..

Embarrassing!!!

Well, I am not quite halfway through this. So far, I have witnessed an Indian carrying a recurve bow and an experienced outdoorsman eat poison berries. It is pretty bad.

The best part of this movie is the movie cover. Don't waste your time watching it. Worst display of acting I have ever watched.

Slow, boring and uneventful...
paul_haakonsen24 August 2021
Right, well I was lured in to watching the 2021 movie "Buckskin" from the movie's cover/poster, as it definitely had something interesting appeal. And it seemed like this could be a western with a very different approach to the genre.

So of course I sat down to watch the movie, despite never ever having heard about it prior to getting to sit down and watch it.

Well, writer and director Brett Bentman definitely did deliver an unorthodox Western here with the movie "Buckskin". Just a shame that it wasn't a change in the Western genre that was for the better. Nay, while "Buckskin" does differ from the archetypical blueprint you see lots of Western movie follow, then it wasn't a wholehearted movie.

The storyline told here was just too mundane and didn't really have enough contents to it to support a feature length movie. Sure, there were aspects to the storyline that were interesting enough, but they just were washed away amidst all the mediocrity and slow pacing of the rest of the movie.

I must admit that I was expecting a bit more action, gun fights and the typical stuff you see in Western movies. But no, that was not what writer and director Brett Bentman had in mind for "Buckskin". Instead we get to follow a tracker venture into these apparently forbidden forest in search for some people. Yeah, and that was essentially the heart of the story. It was so incredibly boring and slow paced to watch that one character mill about in a light forest that definitely had no foreboding or ominous feel to it.

Now, I am not familiar with lead actor Tom Zembrod (playing Wesley Porter), but he actually did an okay job with his performance, despite of having virtually nothing to work with in terms of a properly entertaining or interesting script.

I had hoped that "Buckskin" would prove to be a different Western movie, which it also actually was, but not in the good way, sadly so.

While I managed to sit through the entire ordeal, and yes "Buckskin" was an ordeal, then I can't claim that I was particularly entertained nor enjoying the movie all that much.

If you enjoy a good Western movie, don't waste your time, money or effort on the 2021 movie "Buckskin" from writer and director Brett Bentman.

My rating of "Buckskin" lands on a rather generous three out of ten stars.

Not a bad INDY film
HonestIndyReviewer19 June 2021
Seems to me the handful of negative reviews are from people who don't have a general understanding of independent film making. I mean, if you're comparing this to The Revenant, then stick with watching multimillion dollar movies. The guy who said the script is bad, did you read the script? The guy who said the editing is bad, are you an editor? Lol. Idk people are so basic minded. This movie is pretty good! Good job.

Trappers Delight
jbanditw8 September 2021
Movie went down roads that most don't go. Written very good and played out well by the actors. Their lives all turned around quickly and the ending will leave you with your mouth open wondering what just happened! Would not have wanted to have lived in those days. Enjoyed!

A Below-Average Western
Uriah4319 October 2022
This film begins somewhere in Texas with a group of fur trappers being ambushed by a tribe of hostile Indians in the mysterious Buckskin Woods. Needless to say, this news doesn't sit well with one of the leaders of the Southwestern Fur Company named "Captain Coleman" (Robert Keith) who, rather strangely, seems more concerned about the loss of the pelts that were being brought back than about the men employed by him. That changes, however, when he is told that his grandson "Levi Coleman" (Blaze Freeman) was with those group of men and his body has not been accounted for yet. To that effect, he immediately sends for a former trapper named "Wesley Porter" (Tom Zembrod) and offers a bounty of $100 to him if he can bring his grandson back alive. Naturally, having recently experienced a traumatic episode while venturing in those same woods, Porter is somewhat reluctant to accept this new mission. To that effect, his wife "Cora Porter" (Tiffany McDonald) is also concerned and, to possibly dissuade him from going, urges him to seek out a Pawnee "Fortune Teller" (played by Giovannie Cruz) for advice. Yet, even after the fortune teller tells him that he will not return from his journey, his desire for the bounty overrides everything else and he sets off anyway. What he doesn't realize, however, is that hostile Indians aren't the only formidable enemy he must soon face. Now, rather than reveal any more, I will just say that this film started off well enough but it soon got bogged down when it crossed over into mystical or philosophical territory. To put it mildly, neither the director (Brett Bentman), the writers or the actors were capable of pulling it off on their own. In short, I was not at all impressed with this movie and I have rated it accordingly. Below average.

Let's just go ahead and call this "movie" the abomination that it is and move on.

Almost every good rating comes from an account that was made within this last week or at least has Buckskin as the only thing they reviewed.

Irony, amirite?

Stole my time
mailpartnerantiques26 November 2021
I thought it was awful. Wonky plot. Woods scenes look like they were filmed in a town park, lacked any wildness. Some characters reading lines. Main character monotone throughout except when wolfing!

I see a lot of those involved in this film rated it as a 10. Well done on that score!

No "Bone Tomahawk".
hedleymorrissey4 October 2022
Watched this film tonight, the script and filming were alright but the setting was more town park than wilderness, some of the acting (not all) was amateurish and dreadful...... Maybe lack of proper funding can explain some of the faults, it is no "Bone Tomahawk" or."Revenant" and not even in the same universe of such great, modern, classic westerns as "Dances with Wolves", "Open Range", or the "Unforgiven".

It reminded me more of an episode of some tv western series from the 60's or 70's in its production values than a film.

Saying that I still watched it to the end and the end did surprise me ......

Just average
susieqeisus7 March 2022
This popped up on my recommended movies list and when I found out it was because I made the mistake of watching the movie Bull Shark from the same director the reason was clear. Still, the trailer looked engaging enough and I've seen this lead actor before so I decided to give it a try.

Based on the director's previous work I expected this might be miserable to sit through but after giving it the time of day I'm not disappointed. It's not a bad movie and it certainly isn't a great one.....I'd call it perfectly average. It has flaws but the things that work for this movie really pop.

The movie is anchored by its lead actor and his commitment to the film. He is tasked with carrying the movie on his shoulders because he's in almost every scene and every other actor is hit or miss. For every good performance you're likely to find one as bad as the other was good.

The cinematographer looks to be a regular with this director and his work is put on much better display here than the last effort I saw, and it's another saving grace of what might have otherwise been a lackluster piece of entertainment.

I can't recommend this film highly but I wouldn't steer anybody away from it either. Give it a shot and see what you think. There's certainly worse ways to kill 90 minutes.

Something sinister and entertaining in them thar woods.
boneskelley22 June 2021
Buckskin is an intense, violent, and emotional Journey. It grabs hold of you and draws you in as if the woods themselves were calling out to you. I didn't really know what to expect when I first started watching this, but I know what I didn't expect, and that was the M. Night Shyamalan type surprise ending. I mean that in a good way. I love it when I think I know where are movie is going and then I am pleasantly surprised by that, holy crap, I can't believe they did that moment that just takes the movie into a whole different entertaining direction. The lead actors are top-notch with intensity and emotion. Young actor Blaze Freeman plays the wide -eyed lost boy numbed by the horrific trauma he has suffered and the dark power the Buckskin Woods seems to possess. I thoroughly enjoyed taking this Cinematic Journey and I think you will too. Highly recommended.

Shocking
kristinbenko22 June 2021
This movie kept me on the edge of my seat hoping that the young Levi would make it out of the Buckskin Woods. I was completely shocked at what happened. This movie is not my type of movie I would generally pick to watch, but for you western lovers, now I know why you love these. I would highly recommend this movie. The grandpa and the young boy were my two favorite characters.

Keeps you guessing....
This movie kept me guessing til the end. Starting from the opening scene, it moved at a great pace and I never felt bored or that it was dragging. The actors made the story believable and I wanted to keep watching to find out what was going to happen next. Definitely one to watch or put on your list!
