Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat Was Behind Pamela Anderson’s Explosive Divorce From Kid Rock: ‘How could you do that movie?’
Image
Sacha Baron Cohen might be the king of mockumentary films, but it seems it’s not all fun and games that follow his films. While the actor is known for some serious roles that have received widespread acclaim, The Dictator and Borat remain some of the most well-received works from the actor’s filmography.

Borat! Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan || 20th Century Fox

Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat might be a film that is not suited for everyone, but the film has a strong and vocal cult following that finds it hilarious. However, Pamela Anderson, who featured in the first Borat film, was the subject of a divorce mere months after as a direct consequence of starring in the film.

‘Jury Duty’ Renewed for Season 2 at Prime Video
Image
“Jury Duty” will be back for Season 2 sooner than we think.

The Amazon Freevee comedy, which became a surprise hit for the platform and migrated over to Prime Video after the sibling streamer’s shuttering, already produced its next installment, according to media reports.

Amazon representatives declined to comment for the story.

The new season is believed to be set at a corporate retreat instead of a courtroom, according to a report from Variety. Filming took place in Los Angeles and Deadline reported the story will center around a David vs. Goliath theme.

“Jury Duty” was created by Lee Eisenberg, and Gene Stupnitsky. Season 1 followed breakout star Ronald Gladden in a documentary-style journey following his time as a juror, until it is revealed that the proceedings were fake from the start.

The series is executive produced by the pair alongside David Bernad, Ruben Fleischer (“Superstore”), Nicholas Hatton, Cody Heller (“Dummy”), Todd Schulman,...

‘The Apprentice’ Star Maria Bakalova Didn’t Stay in Character as Ivana Trump Off the Set: ‘That Could Have Affected My Mental Health’
Image
The Iron Curtain had already collapsed when Maria Bakalova was growing up in Bulgaria, but old sensibilities still lingered: as a girl she was discouraged from playing the “aggressive and muscular” electric guitar (she learned the flute instead) and life there was still largely circumscribed by national borders.

But Bakalova, who portrays the Czech-born Ivana Trump in “The Apprentice,” found avenues for expansion, in part, as a way of rebelling. “It didn’t feel right to be put in a box because of your gender,” says Bakalova, who burst on the scene with her Oscar-nominated performance in “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.” “Knowing I didn’t get a chance to pursue something had some impact on my development and maybe made me stronger and a bit more daring.”

Bakalova’s first path out was singing, and by age 11, she was traveling throughout Western Europe to competitions, much as Ivana Trump had gotten out via national ski teams.

Red One's New Streaming Record Continues A Great Dwayne Johnson Trend That Signifies A New Phase Of His Career
Image
Red One has broken a streaming record that may prove that Dwayne Johnson's career is undergoing a major shift. Johnson is a star who is very familiar with shifts in his career, as he originally became famous as a WWE wrestler under the moniker "The Rock." After taking on a role as the antagonist in the 2001 adventure sequel The Mummy Returns, he began to transition toward acting, and he has become a major movie star with many blockbuster movies and franchises under his belt, including the new Jumanji movies, the Fast Saga, the Moana franchise, Rampage, and more.

However, his new Christmas action-comedy underperformed both critically and commercially. On Rotten Tomatoes, it earned a dismal 30% score from critics, which ties it with 2005's Be Cool as the eighth worst-rated Dwayne Johnson movie ever. Although its audience score on the platform is a Verified Hot 90%, this has not translated to success in theaters.

Dirty Angels Review: Eva Green is great but the movie misses the mark
Image
Plot: Centers on a group of female soldiers who disguise themselves as medics to rescue a group of teenagers caught between Isis and the forces of the Taliban.

Review: Martin Campbell is mostly known for being franchise Viagra for the 007 series but he’s been chugging away at action movies for decades. Outside of his Bond work, I’ve never really connected with any of his films but I appreciate how he shoots action. And I’m a sucker for creative re-team-ups, so it’s nice to see it’s nice to see him and Eva Green join forces again. Especially with Green taking on a role that is so different from her usual choices. But sadly nearly everything about Dirty Angels feels dated and uninspired.

The film follows a group of female soldiers who are tasked with rescuing a group of kidnapped girls from Isis. Tensions in the...

‘Creature Commandos’ Cast and Character Guide | Photos
Image
James Gunn is once again uniting a team of super-powered misfits in the new animated DC series, “Creature Commandos.” The “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “The Suicide Squad” filmmaker — and co-head of the new DC Universe — unites a cast full of familiar faces, including some you’ll recognize from “The Suicide Squad,” as a roster of less familiar superheroes, including Rick Flagg Sr., GI Robot and The Bride.

Check out a handy guide to the “Creature Commandos” cast and the DC characters to whom they’re lending their voices.

Amanda Waller is the imposing leader of A.R.G.U.S. (Advanced Research Group Uniting Super-Humans) and basically the closest thing the DC Universe has to its own Nick Fury. After the events of “The Suicide Squad,” Waller has been hemmed in; she can no longer use humans in her go-for-broke, off-the-books suicide missions. But don’t worry,...

Maria Bakalova’s Sci-Fi Comedy ‘Triumph’ Tells the ‘Absolutely True Story’ of Psychics and Space Aliens
Image
Wild projects do not frighten Maria Bakalova. The classically trained Bulgarian actress gained international fame and an Oscar nomination for her performance in 2020’s “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” followed it with a role in the daring “Bodies Bodies Bodies” and can be seen this year in Ali Abbasi’s newsworthy “The Apprentice.”

But her wildest project yet might be “Triumph,” a dark comedy about psychics and space aliens in Bulgaria that is her home country’s selection for the Best International Feature Film Oscar this year.

Bakalova joined the film’s directors Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov to discuss the “crazy, unbelievable, but absolutely true” new film with Steve Pond as part of TheWrap Screening Series.

Set in the early 1990s, right after the fall of the Berlin Wall, “Triumph” dramatizes a real-life attempt by the Bulgarian army to unearth an alien capsule from under a field, an artifact that will...

Donald Trump Movie ‘The Apprentice’ Scores Theatrical Release in Russia (Exclusive)
Image
The critically acclaimed Donald Trump biopic The Apprentice — which the former president has repeatedly denounced — is heading to cinemas in a somewhat surprising place: Russia.

The film, written by veteran Vanity Fair reporter Gabriel Sherman and directed by rising Iranian-Danish filmmaker Ali Abbasi, has landed a Russian distribution deal and is scheduled to open on 800 screens across the country on Friday. Moscow-based distributor Arna Media is handling the release after acquiring the local rights to the film last month from U.K. sales agent Rocket Science. Sources close to the film say that only modest cuts were required to get the movie into Russia.

The Russia release plan stands somewhat in contrast to the real Donald Trump’s reportedly cozy relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has drastically curtailed any artistic expression he deems unwelcome to his regime’s interests. Moscow has raided concerts and fined musicians who have...

Sacha Baron Cohen Details the 2 Times He Was Kicked Out of New York: ‘It Was a Little Bit Over the Top’
Image
Not many people can claim that they were kicked out of the state of New York twice, but Sacha Baron Cohen isn’t most people. During a visit to “The Tonight Show” (in New York) to promote his Apple TV+ series “Disclaimer,” Cohen told Jimmy Fallon exactly what led to him being booted both times.

“I thought it was a little bit over the top,” Cohen told Fallon on “The Tonight Show” Thursday night.

Not surprisingly, the evacuations happened while he was filming “Borat” and “Borat 2.” The first time Cohen was encouraged to leave the state, he was filming a scene at the Wellington Hotel.

“Borat thought that when he bought the room for 200 bucks, he bought everything in the room. So I started carrying out the bed and the furniture,” Cohen explained as Fallon and the studio audience laughed. “They called the police, and they arrested the line producer and the first Ad.

“Get the hell out of the state”: One Borat 2 Scene Was So Risky to Film, Sacha Baron Cohen Had to Flee New York After It
Image
Sacha Baron Cohen made multiple headlines with his two Borat films for all the wrong reasons. Despite being critically acclaimed, both the mockumentary films have their fair share of controversies. For its unscripted and unconventional humor, the English comedian had to face many hurdles while filming the Borat series.

After Borat‘s controversial success, Sacha Baron Cohen thought to level up the fun in its sequel. But it also brought more trouble as a controversial scene from Borat 2 (2020) featuring the former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani even forced Baron Cohen to flee the city for safety.

Sacha Baron Cohen Brings Back Borat and Ali G for 2024 Election Parody
Image
Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat and Ali G are in the house.

Cohen revived both of his characters on Thursday’s episode of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” taking shots at former president Donald Trump and shooting his shot with Vice President Kamala Harris.

Cohen’s rapper character Ali G first praised Republican nominee and former president Donald Trump, saying, “Yo, Mr. Trump. You is been convicted of 32 crimes, you stole classified documents, you boned ‘nough porn stars, and you ain’t never paid no taxes. Respect! You is my hero.”

Ali G called Harris a “fit honey.”

“When I look at you on the television, me gets a massive election,” he said.

Soon after, it was Borat’s turn. He simply wants a favor from Trump.

“Mr. Trumps. You say in Ohio that people are eat the cats and the dogs. Which restaurant do they serve them at?...

Sacha Baron Cohen Addresses Trump and Harris as Ali G and Borat on Fallon: Watch
Image
Sacha Baron Cohen stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday night to promote his role in the recently-released Alfonso Cuarón drama series Disclaimer, but as usual, Jimmy Fallon had some other plans for the actor and comedian. At Fallon’s request, Cohen donned the looks of his iconic characters Ali G and Borat and pretended to a moderate a debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.

Though he joked that he is “trying to launch [him]self as a dramatic actor,” Cohen began with Ali G, sporting his red cap, tinted glasses, and goatee (and also addressing Fallon as ‘Kimmel’). Predictably, as Ali G, he “praised” Trump for his criminal activity and tried to hit on Harris: “When I look at you on the television I get a massive election,” Cohen joked as Ali G about Harris.

Then, he switched gears to don the look of Borat, with...

Sacha Baron Cohen Revives Borat to Mock Trump and Tell Kamala Harris: ‘You’re a Woman, a Person of Color and Married to a Jew. I Advise You Not to Come to Kazakhstan’
Image
Sacha Baron Cohen resurrected his infamous characters Borat and Ali G during a visit to “The Tonight Show,” in which he imagined what they might say to Donald Trump and Kamala Harris amid the race for president. Ali G is predictably a big admirer of Trump, which allowed Baron Cohen to call out the Republican nominee’s worst behavior.

“Yo, Mr. Trump. You is being convicted of 32 crimes, you stole classified documents, you boned enough porn stars and you ain’t never paid no taxes. Respect! You my hero,” Baron Cohen as Ali G said as “The Tonight Show” studio audience laughed.

Reviving Borat also gave Baron Cohen the chance to mock Trump’s infamous claim during the presidential debate that Haitian immigrants in Ohio are eating dogs and other pets.

Maria Bakalova on Becoming Ivana Trump, That Controversial ‘Apprentice’ Rape Scene and Donald Trump’s Cease-and-Desist Letter
Image
The first time Maria Bakalova came to New York City, she had to flee.

She was in disguise, shooting a scene for 2020’s “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” that put her alone in a hotel room with Rudy Giuliani. The former mayor touched her midsection and reached down his pants — and then Sacha Baron Cohen burst into the room wearing a wig and lingerie. Giuliani called the police, and Bakalova and Baron Cohen sprinted down Broadway and escaped to Romania to finish the movie.

“We did the scene, and immediately after, police cars started chasing us,” Bakalova remembers. “I was scared I might end up in jail.”

The second time she came to the city, in December 2021, she attended a screening of her A24 movie “Bodies Bodies Bodies” and brought Covid back with her to Los Angeles, where she lives — an unwelcome souvenir that forced her to miss Christmas with her family in Bulgaria.

Donald Trump Lashes Out at ‘The Apprentice’ by Calling It a ‘Politically Disgusting Hatchet Job’ Made by ‘Human Scum’; Director Responds: ‘I’m Available to Talk Further’
Image
Donald Trump took to his Truth Social account to rail against “The Apprentice,” the new movie from director Ali Abbasi that centers on Trump’s rise as a real estate businessman in New York City under the mentorship of Roy Cohn. Sebastian Stan plays Trump in the film, with Jeremy Strong starring as Cohn and “Borat 2” Oscar nominee Maria Bakalova playing Trump’s first wife, Ivana. “The Apprentice” opened in theaters Oct. 11 from Briarcliff Entertainment.

“A Fake and Classless Movie written about me, called, ‘The Apprentice’ (Do they even have the right to use that name without approval?), will hopefully ‘bomb,'” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “It’s a cheap, defamatory, and politically disgusting hatchet job, put out right before the 2024 Presidential Election, to try and hurt the Greatest Political Movement in the History of our Country, ‘Make America Great Again!'”

“My former wife, Ivana, was a kind and wonderful person,...

The Apprentice: Who is Roy Cohn and Why is He So Important to Trump's Origin? - Main Image

Sebastian Stan continues to get himself attached to experimental biopics with projects like Pam & Tommy and I, Tonya, and now he’s set to play probably one of the biggest political figures of the 2020s, Donald J. Trump.

Stan’s young Trump character is set to be in the middle of the movie The Apprentice, but he’s also going to come with a mentor in the form of Roy Cohn (Succession’s Jeremy Strong).

While some have forgotten just how influential Cohn was during his time, the movie is looking to explain his connection with Trump and how he influenced so much of the former president’s personality.

The Untold Story Behind the Release of ‘The Apprentice’
Image
The timely and improbably nuanced Donald Trump origins movie, The Apprentice, almost didn’t make it to cinemas in time for the U.S. presidential election. For much of the past year, in fact, the film appeared to be falling victim to the very same Trumpian tactics of ruthless media manipulation that it seeks to scrutinize.

The Apprentice received rave reviews and an 8-minute standing ovation after its Cannes Film Festival premiere in May. Simultaneously, though, reports emerged that the film’s principal financier, Kinematics — founded by producer Mark Rapaport, son-in-law of the billionaire and known Trump donor Dan Snyder — had objections to a pivotal scene in the movie where a young Donald rapes his then-wife Ivana Trump. Days later, Trump’s real-life lawyers filed a cease and desist letter threatening to sue the producers and any future distributors of The Apprentice.

Given the film’s content, the meta nature...

The Results of a Real Election Nearly Ruined a Classic ‘Seinfeld’ Character
Image
Seinfeld isn’t exactly known for being the most political show, with the possible exception of Kramer’s brief stint as a socialist Santa Claus, and Jerry’s exclusively pastry-based calls for racial unity. But, oddly enough, one episode went to great lengths to incorporate the results of a real-life election at the last minute.

Season Five’s “The Non-Fat Yogurt” found Elaine dating Lloyd Braun, an aide to New York Mayor David Dinkins, during an election. Dinkins ultimately lost to Rudy Giuliani, and in the reality of the show, this was mostly thanks to Jerry’s tip that an allegedly fat-free frozen yogurt brand had been misleading customers, which Giuliani pledged to investigate

You can tell that his cameo was filmed a long time ago, because Giuliani is seen giving his press conference in some kind of wood paneled office, not a ramshackle landscaping business that happens to share...

Maria Bakalova Says Stranger Than Fiction Film ‘Triumph’ Is Somewhere Between a Satire and a Tragedy: ‘It Provokes Conversations’ | Wrap Studio
Image
The phrase “stranger than fiction” can aptly be applied to the new Bulgarian film “Triumph,” which is – shockingly – based on true events. Set after the fall of Communism in the 1990s, a task force of high-ranking Bulgarian army officers and psychics embarks on a military operation to dig up an alien artifact.

The film’s co-director Kristina Grozeva encountered the soldiers as a kid living in Bulgaria, and co-director Petar Valchanov said this inspired them to use the true story as a jumping off point for their own story.

“It’s incredible when you have a chance to work on something that has been inspired by something that really happened, because you realize that real-life stories have even more layers than fictional stories,” producer and star Maria Bakalova told TheWrap’s Steve Pond at TheWrap’s 2024 TIFF Studio sponsored by Moët & Chandon and Boss Design.

Valchanov said psychics were...

Oscars International Race: Complete List of Entries So Far
Image
As the Oct. 2 deadline for submitting films to the Oscars Best International Feature Film category nears, more than 50 countries have announced their entries.

Any country with a selection committee that has been approved by the Academy is allowed to submit a single film for consideration in the category. Volunteers from all branches of the Academy will cast ballots in an initial round of voting that narrows the field to a 15-film shortlist, which will be announced on Dec. 17. A second round of voting, which is restricted to members who watch all of the shortlisted films, will select the final five nominees.

Here is the complete list of submissions that have been announced so far. Inclusion on this list does not guarantee that a film will qualify, because the Academy still needs to vet each film to make sure it meets eligibility requirements ranging from the amount of non-English dialogue to...

The Apprentice trailer takes you on a whirlwind of Roy Cohn’s mentorship to Donald Trump
Image
Briarcliff Entertainment has released the trailer Ali Abbasi’s upcoming controversial film The Apprentice, which details Donald Trump’s rise in the real-estate business. Briarcliff has scheduled the film to be released weeks before the U.S. Presidential Election on October 11. Additionally, the studio plans to give the movie an awards push. Movies about New York business are predominantly cutthroat and this one is no exception as it quick-cuts through a montage of chaos as Sebastian Stan as Trump builds his real estate empire with Jeremy Strong’s Roy Cohn guiding him along the way.

The Apprentice‘s story will follow the era of Trump’s life from his twenties through his late thirties. It will “examine his efforts to build his real estate business in New York over the course of the ’70s and ’80s, also digging into his relationship with infamous attorney Roy Cohn.” The film description also...

Andrew Garfield, Elizabeth Olsen, Barry Keoghan and More Toast Female Filmmakers at the Variety and Chanel Dinner at TIFF
Image
The Variety and Chanel Female Filmmakers Dinner brought together an A-list lineup of Hollywood stars and creatives including Andrew Garfield, Elizabeth Olsen, “Nightbitch” director Marielle Heller (who attended this event mere moments before her film’s premiere), Danielle Deadwyler, Barry Keoghan and more for a vibrant night amidst the Toronto Film Festival. The vibe was electric, with drinks flowing, delicious food on hand and a spontaneous game of “Two Truths and a Lie” breaking out.

The event, which took place at Soho House Toronto, featured a cocktail hour downstairs before a three-course dinner on the second floor of the social club. Inside, the hotly anticipated “Saturday Night” film cast Cory Michael Smith, Lamorne Morris, Ella Hunt and Dylan O’Brien stopped in before their Tuesday night premiere. The film, a hot title at TIFF, is set within the chaotic 90 minutes before the first episode of “SNL” aired in 1975. The group mingled...

Oscars: Bulgaria Submits TIFF Selection ‘Triumph’ Starring Maria Bakalova For International Film Race
Image
Triumph, starring and produced by Maria Bakalova, a 2021 Oscar acting nominee for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, will be Bulgaria‘s International Feature Film submission for the 2025 Academy Awards.

The darkly comedic movie by award-winning Bulgarian filmmakers Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov was selected after a unanimous vote by the country’s selection committee ahead of Triumph‘s world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival later this week.

Grozeva and Valchanov’s previous film, The Father, which featured a cameo by Bakalova, became Bulgaria’s 2021 International Oscar entry after winning the Grand Prix at the 2019 Karlovy Vary Film Festival.

Triumph is the last part of a movie trilogy by Grozeva and Valchanov that includes the 2014 The Lesson, also a TIFF selection, and 2016’s Glory. It marks Bakalova’s return to Bulgarian cinema and the first film she did in her native country following her breakout role in Borat 2, which launched her Hollywood career.

Oldenburg Festival Unveils Competition Lineup, Tribute to Exiled Filmmakers
Image
The Oldenburg Film Festival, Germany’s leading indie movie event, will this year pay tribute to dissident filmmakers Na Gyi and Paing Phyo Thu.

The Myanmar director and actress have been living in hiding for more than three years, after their public opposition to the February 1, 2021 military coup put them in the crosshairs of the country’s ruling junta.

Oldenburg highlighted the couple and their plight, in the 2021 festival, screening Na Gyi’s What Happened to the Wolf?, which stars Paing Phyo Thu, in its world premiere. The story of a gay romance between two terminally ill women, played by Paing and Eaindra Kyaw Zin, the film is not overtly political but its Lbgtq+ storyline drew the ire of the military regime. What Happened to the Wolf? had been submitted to the festival after the coup but before the filmmakers went into hiding. The trailer for the film was a...

Maria Bakalova: The Apprentice isn't a Donald Trump biopic
Maria Bakalova doesn't consider 'The Apprentice' to be a Donald Trump "biopic".The 27-year-old actress plays the former US president's first wife Ivana Trump in the movie about his business career during the 1970s and 80s and insists that Ali Abbasi's film is about more than just the controversial politician - who is portrayed by Sebastian Stan in the flick.Maria told Deadline's Breaking Baz column at the Cannes Film Festival: "This is not a biopic. I don't see this as a biopic, because not every single detail of Trump's life exists in this movie."And I don't want to say this is a Trump movie. I think this is a bigger movie than just focused on one person that is not completely the same story. And it's inspired by him, but it's not a biopic for me."'The Apprentice' implies that Ivana, who died...

‘The Apprentice’ Is the Most Brutal Donald Trump Biopic Imaginable
Image
Every superhero gets an origin story. So, for that matter, do most supervillains. The Apprentice drops viewers into New York circa 1973, when a 34-year-old resident of Queens walked in to the upper-crust establishment on the Upper West Side known as Le Club. He went there in an attempt to impress a young woman. He’d leave having met a well-known lawyer and well-connected member of New York’s elite, who would end up changing his life. The legal eagle was the notorious Roy Cohn. The outer-borough wannabe was Donald Trump.

Ali Abbasi offers to show Donald Trump ‘The Apprentice’: “I don’t think this a movie he would dislike”
Image
The Apprentice director Ali Abbasi has said he would like Donald Trump to watch his Cannes Competition selection after the former US president’s campaign declared it will sue the filmmakers over “blatantly false assertions”.

“I don’t necessarily think this a movie he would dislike,” Abbasi told a Cannes press conference on Tuesday. ”I think he would be surprised. I would offer to go and meet him and have a screening and talk about the movie afterwards.”

Trump’s campaign labelled the 1970s-set origins story centred on the relationship between Trump and his notorious fixer Roy Cohn “pure fiction...

Trump Campaign Threatens Legal Action Over Sebastian Stan’s ‘The Apprentice’ Movie: ‘This Garbage Is Pure Fiction’
Image
Former President Donald Trump’s campaign is hitting back following the premiere of the controversial film “The Apprentice,” which chronicles the 2024 presidential candidate’s early years as a real estate developer.

“We will be filing a lawsuit to address the blatantly false assertions from these pretend filmmakers,” the Trump campaign’s chief spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement to Variety. “This garbage is pure fiction which sensationalizes lies that have been long debunked. As with the illegal Biden Trials, this is election interference by Hollywood elites, who know that President Trump will retake the White House and beat their candidate of choice because nothing they have done has worked.”

Cheung’s statement continues, “This ‘film’ is pure malicious defamation, should not see the light of day, and doesn’t even deserve a place in the straight-to-dvd section of a bargain bin at a soon-to-be-closed discount movie store, it belongs in a dumpster fire.

Brutal Donald Trump Biopic ‘The Apprentice’ Gets 8-Minute Cannes Standing Ovation as Director Says ‘It’s Time to Make Movies Political Again’
Image
Even in Cannes, it’s hard to avoid Donald Trump.

“The Apprentice,” the story of the 45th and possibly 47th president’s early years as a real estate developer, earned a eight-minute standing ovation on Monday. It’s probably safe to assume that the film festival crowd isn’t a Maga-heavy one, so it helps that “The Apprentice” paints a blistering portrait, focusing on Trump’s relationship with Roy Cohn, the McCarthy-ite lawyer and fixer who took an interest in the “the Donald” before he was a household name.

Sebastian Stan (“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”) stars as Trump, Jeremy Strong (“Succession”) plays Cohn and Maria Bakalova (“Borat 2”) portrays Ivana Trump, the thrice-married president’s first spouse. Ali Abbasi, the Iranian-Danish filmmaker behind “Border” and “Holy Spider,” directs the movie from a script by Gabriel Sherman, a journalist who covered the Trump White House, as well as...

Donald Trump Origin Tale ‘The Apprentice’ Gets 11-Minute Ovation At Its Cannes World Premiere
Image
The Trumps were on the red carpet this evening at the Cannes Film Festival — sort of — as Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice world premiered in competition. The film was greeted with an 11-minute post-screening ovation at the Grand Theatre Lumiere.

Sebastian Stan, the Emmy and Golden Globe nominee known for his work in the MCU and the Hulu miniseries Pam & Tommy, here plays a young Donald Trump with Oscar nominee Maria Bakalova (Borat 2) as Trump’s first wife, Ivana. Emmy and Golden Globe winner Jeremy Strong also stars as infamous attorney Roy Cohn, and Martin Donovan is playing Fred Trump.

Stan and Bakalova attended the red-carpet premiere. Strong was not in attendance as we understand he stayed in New York where he is starring on Broadway in An Enemy of the People.

Abbasi in remarks after the film said he wanted to embrace the politics of now in cinema with so much unrest in the world.

“In the time of turmoil, there’s this tendency to look inwards, to bury your head deep in the sand … and hope for the best, hope for the storm to get away,” he said. “But you know, the storm is not going away, the storm is coming, actually. The worst times are to come.”

The storm is coming, it’s time to make movies political again says director of ‘The Apprentice’ Ali Abbasi #Cannes pic.twitter.com/mEUVdXV8Dp

— Deadline Hollywood (@Deadline) May 20, 2024

There was lots of hugs going around among Abbasi, Stan and Bakalova as the lights went up on the two-hour film. Cate Blanchett, Cynthia Erivo and Oliver Stone were among the crowd applauding afterward. Stone, who has made his share of political films, even offered a spot review.

— Deadline Hollywood (@Deadline) May 20, 2024

An exploration of power and ambition, and set in a world of corruption and deceit, The Apprentice examines Trump’s efforts to build his real estate business in New York in the 1970s and 80s, also digging into his relationship with Cohn. It’s a mentor-protégé story that charts the origins of a major American dynasty. Filled with larger than life characters, it reveals the moral and human cost of a culture defined by winners and losers.

The real-life former Potus is currently standing trial in a criminal hush-money case in New York.

Gabriel Sherman, whose bestseller The Loudest Voice in the Room inspired Showtime’s miniseries The Loudest Voice, starring Russell Crowe as Fox News founder Roger Ailes, wrote The Apprentice script.

The Apprentice producers are Daniel Bekerman of Scythia Films, Jacob Jarek of Profile Pictures and Ruth Treacy of Taylored Films. Executive producers are Grant S. Johnson, Sherman and Amy Baer, in association with Kinematics as the financier.

International sales are being handled by Rocket Science with CAA and WME on domestic sales in Cannes. Studiocanal recently acquired UK-Ireland rights.

Why A New Donald Trump Movie Is Generating Controversy Ahead Of Its Premiere
Image
Of all the various actors who've made their mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sebastian Stan might be the one who's chosen the most interesting career path upon stepping outside of the superhero limelight. Stan hasn't exactly shied away from some of the more challenging and, occasionally, downright controversial roles out there, arguably beginning this little streak of sorts with director Craig Gillespie's "I, Tonya" in 2017. He followed this up with a supporting turn in Karyn Kusama's brutal "Destroyer," the bizarre horror/comedy "Fresh" (let's just say that movie packs a bite), and, of course, his Emmy-nominated performance as Tommy Lee in "Pam & Tommy," the Pamela Anderson-centric Hulu miniseries that stirred up no headlines whatsoever.

Not content to rest on his laurels, Stan promptly went and attached himself to a role that likely gave his agent no shortage of heart palpitations: a movie about Donald Trump's rise to infamy.

The 26 Movies We Can’t Wait to See at This Year’s Cannes Film Festival
Image
The 2024 Cannes Film Festival may be lighter on glitz and glamour than in years past, but that means arthouse and international fare from emerging and established filmmakers will get a chance to shine. Still, at least two American auteurs, Francis Ford Coppola (“Megalopolis”) and Paul Schrader, have films in the main competition for the first time in decades. David Cronenberg (“The Shrouds”) and Yorgos Lanthimos (“Kinds of Kindness”) are also back at the festival, with both making personal stories in their own way: Cronenberg, here, reckons with grief over the death of his wife seven years ago, while Lanthimos appears to retreat back into “Dogtooth” territory in a film that’s almost a rebuke of the global success he’s acquired with “Poor Things” and “The Favourite.”

Sean Baker, Andrea Arnold, Ali Abbasi, Jia Zhangke, Karim Aïnouz, and Paolo Sorrentino are also back at Cannes this year with new films in the competition.

Oscars welcome the world: Last decade of acting champs hail from 8 different countries
Image
By taking home the 2024 Best Actor Oscar for “Oppenheimer,” Cillian Murphy blazed a trail as the first Irish-born lead performer ever honored by the film academy. Prior to his victory, there had not been a native Irish acting winner in over 30 years nor any from his city of Cork, as the only earlier examples had involved supporting winners and fellow Dubliners Barry Fitzgerald and Brenda Fricker. His historic achievement brings the total number of different countries that have produced acting champs during the last decade to eight.

As has been the case throughout practically all of Oscars history, the United States is by far the dominant birthplace among the 2015-2024 acting winners. Of the group’s 37 unique members, 26 (or 70.3%) originate from there, including newly-crowned victors Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”), and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”). Stone is one of three American actors to bag two trophies within the last 10 years,...

Sandra Huller: Double Oscar nominee for ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ and ‘The Zone of Interest’?
Image
There was no greater surprise at last year’s Cannes Film Festival than Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest.” Glazer, a British avant-garde filmmaker found himself at the center of Oscar buzz for his adaptation of Martin Amis‘ 2014 novel about Rudolf Hoss (Christian Friedel), the commandant of Auschwitz and his wife. The hauntingly quiet film won the Grand Jury Prize. At the heart of the film is Sandra Huller as Hedwig Hoss. Here are five reasons why we think she’ll reap a Best Supporting Actress nomination.

She’s in contention for another film

Huller is the lead in Justine Triet’s Palme D’Or winning courtroom drama, “Anatomy of a Fall” and is expected to number among the five Best Actress nominees. A dozen performers have competed in both the lead and supporting races in the same year. She could be the lucky 13th, as voters who watch...

Rosamund Pike (‘Saltburn’) is coming for that final Best Supporting Actress slot at the Oscars
Image
Best Supporting Actress has been the trickiest of the four acting categories to predict throughout this awards season and that remains true even now, just days before the Academy Award nominations are announced on Tuesday.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph looks like a lock thanks to her sterling turn in “The Holdovers,” while Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer”) and Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple”) seems guaranteed to get their first nominations. The fourth and fifth slot, however, are up for grabs. Currently, we are predicting that veteran duo Jodie Foster (“Nyad”) and Julianne Moore (“May December”) will secure the final two bids but they aren’t sure things.

And a certain British actress by the name of Rosamund Pike could take advantage of that uncertainty. She was previously nominated for Best Actress for “Gone Girl” in 2015, when she coincidentally lost to Moore, who won for “Still Alice.” Pike is hoping for her second Oscar...

Judd Apatow says it’s ‘insulting’ to put ‘Barbie’ in Oscar race for adapted screenplay
Image
Filmmaker Judd Apatow disagrees with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ decision to classify Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ starring Margot Robbie as an adapted screenplay rather than original.

“It’s insulting to the writers to say they were working off of existing material,” the ‘Knocked Up’ and ‘This Is 40’ director wrote on X/Twitter, reports Variety.

“There was no existing material or story. There was a clear box.”

It was reported that ‘Barbie’ will compete for a best adapted screenplay nomination in the Oscar race, despite campaigning for original screenplay.

Each awards body and voting group has its own subset of rules for movies in terms of which screenplay category they can submit or ultimately be nominated. Many films about pre-existing characters — such as previous Oscar nominees ‘Toy Story 3’, ‘Borat 2’, ‘Before Sunset’ and ‘Before Midnight’ — were ultimately classified as adapted screenplays.
