Mercifully, it's over.
tsk-1944911 November 2021
The never ending totem story is over...less than 15 minutes in, in a very anticlimactic battle. We see lots of returning characters, such as Mon El and James Olsen. That was nice. They fight along side Dreamer, who's super powers are.....what ever is needed for the story...including shooting beams out of her hands....because that has to do with dream powers because..... reasons... And Alex who's super power is....guns? Oh and of course we got out woke commentary! In the midst of battle, while dodging a strike from a huge monster Alex exclaims "No touching without consent!" Because, you know, magical monsters always ask consent before trying to kill someone.

The wedding was nice, especially the musical number from Kara. The return of Cat Grant was spectacular.

The actual ending moments, the big announcement to the world, makes very little sense.

All in all, I stuck it out because I've been watching since the beginning, but it jumped the over the top woke shark a long time ago and it's better that it ended, even if it wasn't an end worthy of the characters that started the show.

An underwhelming finale
dianamarinelli10 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I found the ending great but not excellent. I thought the final ending scene was really cringe and too easy. Also the way treated monel was horrible I thought he was going to get more screen time and he will end up like Kara but no he had to go back to the future. Like seriously? You bring him back to the final battle and that's it? I think there could have been a better funeral service for William. It was nice to have the other og characters and they were treated at least better. I thought the dansen wedding was beautiful and Lena advice to Kara made me tear up.

Omg it was nice to have cat grant on the show and she brought catco which was nice and it kinda bothered me that she revealed herself as supergirl since it kinda contradicts of what she said that she became supergirl to live a normal life and keep her family safe. She could have retired as supergirl and the superfriends could have taken over her duties

Overall I thought the finale could have been better had better expectations.

A somewhat satisfying end to a rather uneven and lacklustre final season
RahulM00710 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The series finale of Supergirl fittingly titled "Kara" serves as a bittersweet send-off to Melissa Benoist's incarnation of Kara Danvers aka Supergirl. Despite my fair share of issues with the final season and also the series as a whole, I genuinely thought that the show runners, writers, producers, cast, crew and everyone involved in the production process gave their all and managed to end the series on a satisfying note. I was never emotionally invested in Supergirl, hence the series finale not evoking a strong emotional reaction from me. However, the final scene where Kara reveals her identity to the world made me tear up quite a bit.

Nyxly and Lex Luthor's inevitable defeat felt anticlimactic. It was too convenient, a little rushed and poorly executed. I found that the totem storyline was quite messy, and felt out of place at times.

Kara Danvers finally revealing her true identity to the world via a CatCo television broadcast led by the one and only Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant is satisfying and exemplifies Kara's journey throughout these six years. She finally fully accepted herself and became her authentic self. Kara Danvers does not need a romantic relationship to be happy. She thrives on the companionship of her friends and family. The finale touched upon the importance of empowerment and being your authentic self. In a way, the final scene alone deserves great appraisal and is top tier. Kara finally finding solace and happiness in her life is truly rewarding. The last scene where the super friends are all gathered at Kara's apartment is bittersweet. El Mayarah!

*I did not expect Calista Flockhart to reprise her role as Cat Grant. This was the most surprising guest star appearance, and I am grateful that it wasn't leaked.

Final verdict (penultimate episode): 6.5/10 Final verdict (series finale) : 7.8/10 Final verdict (season 6): 5.9/10.

Awful Season, Outstanding Sendoff! Sayonara, Supergirl!
demigodshmurda11 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I'd been thinking about what to say about this finale for a while now, and now that I'm actually sitting down to write this review... Suddenly, I'm at a loss for words. This episode wasn't perfect, this season wasn't perfect, and this show definitely wasn't perfect. But the funny thing is, this episode didn't try to look back at what came before it, but rather looked forward towards these characters futures. And in my personal opinion, that's what every series finale should do.

Even though this is a 10 / 10 review, I did still have bones to pick.

For a series finale, the action was mediocre at best. Arrow's final action sequence was a lot better and more drawn out with choreography and camera work that made you move in your seat with every blow, but this one had a charm of its own despite being shorter and lacking meaningful payoffs. I was surprised at the characters they brought back. PARASITE? RED TORNADO?? NAZI SUPERGIRL??? That's some pretty deep cuts, but it worked. Despite that, the fight was still pretty short, and Lex and Nyxly's defeat was more than a little underwhelming.

I was also not a fan of Alex and Kelly's vows at their wedding. And don't even think about playing the "istaphobe" card. My favorite Arrowverse character is Sara Lance, a bisexual female assassin married to a *woman* from the future. My issue stems with the fact that the writers have done literally nothing to make us care about Kelly other than using her to racebait the audience in "Blind Spots". I've never cared for the character, as I've never found anything that makes her personable, and Azie Tesfai's performance has been very hit-or-miss throughout the series. So when Kelly and Alex were exchanging vows... It felt hollow. Honestly, I felt like J'onn's speech had more impact than Alex and Kelly's.

I also think that starting off the episode with Lillian Luthor's speech was really stupid. Lillian Luthor is cold, calculating, callous, and self-centered beyond belief. I just don't see her really caring about Lena, even if it did give Lena closure on her arc that was also about accepting herself for who she is.

Why was Mon-El even here? He was in the episode for five minutes max, and didn't really do anything to turn the tide of the battle, or even have that much of a meaningful conversation with Kara.

And finally, yes, I do get where some people are coming from when saying that Kara revealing her identity to the world is a stand-in for her "coming out", but I didn't even consider that to be a possibility until I started reading reviews. I'll do a deep dive into why I think this ending worked later, but I felt that I had to address that as a common criticism. And no, it's never publicly stated that Kara Danvers and Clark Kent are cousins, only that Supergirl and Superman are. Superman's identity hasn't been leaked to the public yet. So while there could be people in-universe that would say that Supergirl and Superman are wolves in sheep's clothing, I think making that argument takes away from the final moment for the character. It's a great idea for a worldbuilding perspective, but the moment itself is incredibly satisfying character-wise, and Superman and Lois clearly doesn't want to tackle the idea of Superman's identity being found out yet. They'll cross that bridge when they get there, so let's not try to force it.

Now that I've gotten my complaints out of the way, let's get into the positives.

For starters, I love the fact that the writers chose to handle the action in the first ten minutes of the episode, and save all the character moments for the rest of the episode. It does make the battle at the beginning feel a little rushed, but it makes a lot of narrative sense. Plus, it gives the writers that much more room to give the characters closure, and I think that structure worked really well here. This isn't like Black Lightning's "The Book of Resurrection: Chapter Two: Closure" where the writers didn't seem to know what to do with all the pieces they had, so they literally had to write two different episodes and mash them together to make a thoroughly messy finale. "Kara" is an episode that knows what it's doing and takes its time with all the big character moments, making sure to give every big moment time to breathe.

I think that it was a pretty smart decision to keep Brainy in the present day and for him to essentially say "Sprock the future!" Though he belongs in the future and needs to save the Big Brain, his heart belongs in 2021 with the Super Friends, and he's finally allowed to take control of his own destiny instead of relying on the facts and numbers all the time. It makes him seem like a lot more of a well-rounded character as a result. In his first appearance he came off as almost robotic at times, but since then we've seen him really express himself, laugh, love, cry, make real friends, and take hold of his destiny. (And somehow people don't see Brainy's story as a "coming-out" metaphor. Now who's looking for allegories that aren't there?)

While I thought that the vows exchanged between Alex and Kelly weren't really that great, I thoroughly enjoyed J'onn's speech beforehand. It might actually be one of my favorite performances from David Harewood in the entire series. He almost had *me* tearing up, and I don't cry at anything! Seeing J'onn walk Alex down the aisle was great too, since he really does care about Alex and Kara as if they were his own daughters.

I thought the moment with Kara, James and Winn was well done as well. It was great to see them all together one final time, and that was a scene that was sorely lacking from the Arrow finale "Fadeout". Yeah, we got shots of Oliver and Felicity, and Oliver and Diggle had one last mission together, but we didn't really get a moment of the three of them all together one final time. Yeah, I know that Oliver was *dead*, but we didn't get that scene in season 7 either, since that was Arrow's last "proper" season. And maybe it's just because I have some nostalgia for the days before Winn and James left the show and the writing quality was generally better, but there is a novelty in seeing the three of them together as friends that hasn't completely worn off yet.

A few small notes too. I love that Alex and Kelly got to drive off in J'onn's shapeshifting car. That was awesome! Also, Helen Slater is here! With a shotgun! Why? How? No idea! But it was fun! And as per usual, Andrea contributed absolutely nothing to the plot. Thank you. Andrea is truly a despicable character, and I'll take her doing absolutely nothing of value every chance I get.

And that leads us to the final part of the episode: Kara revealing her identity to the world. And honestly, I'm very impressed with how this turned out. Then again, I also liked the WandaVision finale, so glean from that what you will. I was under the impression that Kara's story would end with her returning to Krypton and reuniting with her parents, but I actually think I like this ending better. Because at the end of the day, it's very symbolic of the differences between Superman and Supergirl as characters. Sure, it's not as apparent as their differences in the comics, where Kara is much more alien and detached from humanity. The show does a really good job though of showing that Kara's true identity is Supergirl, where Superman's true identity is *Clark Kent*. Kara feels most like herself when she's flying or when she's saving people, but Clark feels most like himself when he's spending time with Lois or helping out his sons. (And yes, I do know that Jordan Kent is a completely original character for Superman and Lois, but it doesn't change the point in any fundamental way.)

Clark grew up in idyllic Smallville and inherited their values of family and responsibility, but Kara's never really shown to be comfortable in any home and frequently uses her powers carelessly or just because she wants to, even in the small town of Midvale, and even when she's threatened by the DEO at a very young age. Clark isn't necessarily ashamed of where he came from, but he believes that he's more at home on Earth because they're a more loving and caring people. On the other hand, Kara's secret identity has *always* been holding her back, and even though there's things she *wants* to do as Kara Danvers, she puts Supergirl first without a second thought. So really, the only way for her to truly feel whole would be to give up being Kara Danvers. It's an idea that's touched upon briefly throughout the series, but one that doesn't feel like it comes out of nowhere. Even now, I can remember back to season 3's episode "Midvale" where Kenny Li saw Kara flying and knew she was an alien, but loved her anyway. He was able to accept her for who she was, but Kara couldn't do that for herself. And there was no better way for the episode to show that than by bringing back CAT FRICKING GRANT!!!

Genuinely, I did not expect Calista Flockhart to show up for this episode, but I am *so* glad that she was able to come back! It makes the episode feel so much more complete having Cat Grant here to give Kara her final sendoff. Cat Grant is quite possibly the best character on this show, based solely upon how she interacts with the other characters and manages to push them to be better versions of themselves. Seeing Cat give one of her token motivational speeches was very reminiscent of season 1, and that's probably the best part of the episode.

Overall, I really enjoyed this episode, and I didn't go into it thinking I would. It's not perfect, but it managed to give Kara a satisfying conclusion to the arc she's been on since the series began. The series had its ups and downs, and I'm not sure if I'll miss it, but this episode managed to make me invested in the characters again; which I hadn't been "Welcome Back, Kara". If the writers had put in this much effort all season long, maybe the season would've been better. The more you know!

10 / 10.

Unsatisfactory and yet... satisfactory?
fede448810 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Supergirl "coming out" is an allegory, in case you didn't notice it. But the writers still chickened out by not making Supercorp endgame.

Still, not a bad series finale, all in all.

So disappointed!!!
steph_lia-3124110 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
What was that finale?!?! That was not what a SERIES finale should be! I understand the whole being accepting of herself as both Kara and Supergirl and that was kinda nice but holy cow that takes away from the entire shows plot. The entire time it's been about how she can't reveal her identity (literally the entire plot of the 100th episode). What a disappointment!

Can we take a moment to talk about the absolute atrocity of the ending of the lex storyline?!?! For the entire last 2 seasons it's been building up Lex as the bad guy, especially this season. The whole storyline with Lex and Nyxy (also what even was that romance storyline) was so talked up and had the worst possible ending. It was so anticlimactic. What was the point of these last 2 seasons of Lex just for that to happen? Absolutely horrible!

I gave this 2 stars for a couple reasons. 1. The wedding was adorable and Kara and Winn singing was great and 2. Cat Grant. That's was it. I was so excited to see past characters I loved like Winn, Mon-el and James only for each of them to have a couple lines and barely any screen time. Especially Mon-el. That was so disappointing.

Oh one last point, I thought the show was called supergirl? Instead the past 2 seasons have barely been about Kara. Everyone else got love interests but she never got one after Mon-el. Everyone else had their happy endings so where was hers? They had the perfect opportunity to have her be happy with Mon-el or even Lena for that matter (love Karamel and Supercorp). The MAIN CHARACTER barely got anything these past couple seasons. What's up with that?!

Overall the finale was a HUGE disappointment (that's an understatement) and honestly, the last few seasons have been incredibly poor. What happened? Not good enough. So disappointed in everything. Was really hoping they could redeem these last few seasons with that finale but instead, only made the show worse.

Being your Authentic Self
jrkddkr10 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Cat Grant helps Kara find her true self and live her authentic life. Supergirl has been that show since day 1 to remind you to just be you, inspire you to keep fighting for things that truly matter, truth, love, and hope. It is okay to share your authentic self with the world. Thank you supergirl.

This Isn't A Series Finale...
TheReaper67510 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Ok.. what the hell was this episode?? Lex and Nyxly got defeated by themselves?? That's not even a proper resolution to the season long story nevertheless the series! Mon-El really came for 3 lines then left? The whole team up shot was for nothing? Where was Andreas storyline/involvement? I'm thoroughly disappointed in this. It's funny how "supercorp" fans didn't even get their ship, and how Kara blatantly and flat out said they were only friends. Williams funeral only lasted about 1 minute while the rest was focused on Alex and Kelly's wedding, which was pretty good but really should've been focused on "Kara" the shows protagonist and the episodes name.

Overall, very disappointing "resolution" to Supergirl. She was so disrespected on her own show. I really hope Melissa could return in future crossovers with The Flash and actually live up to her true potential. The only reason why it isn't a 1 is because I enjoyed some moments, and by "some" I really only mean 2. -Alex & Kelly's wedding where Kara & Winn sang together, and Cat Grant's, Mon-El's, & Overgirl's returns. Other than that, it was "Super-underwhelming".

SPOILER came back, I got what I always hoped for in the finale!
nightowls-1952610 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
OMG, I screamed seeing Cat come back. The biggest shock of all. They kept the best secret. Obviously it didn't leak because Calista didn't step foot in Vancouver, was likely all filmed in LA. And she had such a presence even if it was three scenes, she literally stole the whole finale for me.

Loved Alex and Kelly's wedding.

The SERIES finale that failed
lucyrobelin11 November 2021
So we were supposed to find out the long end to Kara's journey and it feels like she's ending her 20s and starting her 30s instead of giving us a good finale for the character. The character gets nothing she wants. The plot proves that the entire season and even the 100th episode were COMPLETELY meaningless, nothing from those journeys ended up being relevant. ALSO, you think that the first gauntlet that Kara failed might have had a twist or hidden meaning we never got, NOPE, it was literally the most basic interpretation which was disproven in the 100th episode. So USELESS.

ALSO, JESSICA QUELLER STOLE THIS FROM AN AO3 FIC, AND THE FIC WAS BETTER. Look up "The Fifth Wall" and get to the totems part and the 5th dimensional magic.

That's a bitter ending
crowbatears10 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
They sidelined the entirety of the seasons plot And wrecked it in 5 Minutes...

This awful episode tried to make you feel happy and it's all contradictory LIKE KARA LITERALLY CANT REVEAL HER IDENTITY. Remember Ep 100 How her and all her loved ones got murdered?

Not to mention how stale all the characters were (Besides cat grant Girl boss forever) Also Nixly shouldn't have gotten the same punishment as Lex. She chose not to kill Esme And she got the same punishment while if she did kill her, she would've been fine... That message is awful like this episode.

And that's not even talking about supercorp. That's just the episode as a whole...

Good bye, Supergirl
pauli_gomez12 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Ok, first things first. I was disappointed by Lex and Nyxly ending. Even when I understand hubris is usually a way to hid insecurities, and I totally see Nyxly terrified of the phantoms, we never had any reason to believe that Lex was afraid of anything. Besides, Nyx won the totem of love by protecting Esmé, I don't think she deserves to be back in the phantom zone. In prison, or at least fully depowered, yes, but the phantom zone was too much. I did not like that.

I liked most of the rest of the chapter though. Yes, there were some cringeworthy scenes, like the meta comment about Helen Slater being a Kryptonian on the movies. I also did not like that Mon-El and Kara did not have any chance together (but I am glad Melissa and her husband could be together in the finale). But the wedding was sweet, they backpedaled on the stupid Brainy-Dreamer drama and they are together, J'onn was wonderful, Wynn and James were back for some closure, Lena remained awesome. And the best part. Cat Grant was back! She proved that she obviously knew about Supergirl and she supported her to do the Iron Man thing. That was satisfactory and great.

Still, I hope we can see Melissa back in some Arrowverse special or something, she was a great Supergirl.

A holistically fitting farewell - well done!
kendraaubry11 December 2021
I've often said that even a great series can struggle to create a decent series finale. A season ending is one thing, but to end a series seems to be difficult for many a writing team. I thought Supergirl did a mighty fine job with theirs. It was on brand, touching, had action, but didn't have action ad nauseam. I always appreciate it when all the relevant characters come back for the finale or are at least referenced, and they did a good job of that as well - a very nice touch.

Supergirl is a series that has taken social justice stances very seriously, and I thought they did a great job wrapping that all together in their finale as well. I won't say spoilers, so I won't mention the story editing blip I caught, which brought a potential 10 down to a 9, but regardless, I think the writers, cast and crew did an overall great job with a big task. Thank you for all the uplift over the past six years. I appreciate you :)

WTF is what I wanted to say but instead I'm just glad it is over. I'm one of those that when I start a show I watch until the end. The last 2 years of this show was painful to watch and poorly written. The worst part was good actors saying bad lines.

Series Finales Are Either Good, or Terrible
Mike_Yike12 November 2021
As the title of this review states, series finales are either good, or terrible. As an "older" viewer, I have seen my share of series finales. I remember the finales of "M*A*S*H*". Not good. The Cheers finale, pretty good. A lot of times it depends on if the viewer is a big fan of the series or just sort of a middling fan. The big fans often think the series finales are great. Anyway, the Supergirl finale wasn't anything special. They brought in all the past cast members. That was nice. But that was pretty much the only thing good about it. As a guy who can identify a politically correct social statement, I can say this about the series; it tried very hard to put those statements in the series. They weren't hidden. The series finale had the grand finale of the series long-running, primary social statement; a same sex romantic relationship. This one ended in a marriage, complete with personally expressed vows spoken to soft music. I was perfectly okay with it but the whole ceremony took about 10 minutes, or about 8 minutes more than necessary. That can happen when there is a social statement to be expressed.

I find it hard to believe that I watched all but a few episodes. I never thought it was a great series but yet I kept returning. Finally, the curtain has dropped. I'm probably better off it has.

Thank you Supergirl. Peace out to my favorite Kryptonian.

Warning: Spoilers
Supergirl is the first show I watched in high school. Thanks to Supergirl, I'm hooked with the DC. After six years we got a decent ending for this wonderful series. For me this series is full of surprises, featuring underrated Justice League members Supergirl and Martian Manhunter, one of the greatest villains Lex Luthor, underrated antagonists like Silver Banshee, Cyborg Superman, Manchester Black, and Ma'alefa'ak. This is what the fans of the comics want. It's these amazing characters that intrigued me. Season 1-3 featuring 3 big alien threats each season, which is good. Season 4-6 focused on social issues a lot more, so it got fewer viewers each season. The saving grace of this series is the introduction Lex Luthor. If not for Lex Luthor's story, it could have been worse. Anyways, I'm so grateful for this wonderful adventure with the Super Friends. It's too hard to say goodbye. I will rewatch some of the episodes for nostalgia.

Goodbye Supergirl! Thanks for the last 6yrs and memories!
ldamena10 November 2021
The the finale however? Was disappointing! What the frack was that? Kara deserved way more than the end the writers gave her. Sure her "happy end" makes her happy but it feels unfinished. Unless Melissa agrees to don the cape again in the future it just seems like she'll be forgotten eventually because her story had no real closure. Again after a 6 yr journey the payoff wasn't satisfying. And why does everyone else get a happy end with a significant other? But not Kara? Not fair. Saying the series finale left me completely underwhelmed is saying too much. 2 hrs later and I'm still trying to comprehend that awful ending. I only gave it a 4 because of Dansen their scenes were beautiful while everything else was a letdown. Right up there with the Game of Thrones and Arrow awful endings for me.

I hated it but I loved it
piumpiumdead11 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I give it a ten because the actors are everything, especially Melissa and Katie. They are all so talented but the writers are so trashy. Again I wanted supercorp endgame or a hinted endgame but taking that away I just hated how powerless supergirl looked the whole season and especially this last episode. She is the most powerful person on earth but we don't see that here. Like her speech was amazing but she can be both a badass and an icon of hope. I am giving a ten because the actors deliver even when the show didn't. The show was such a dissapointment they never saw supergirl as what she was a powerful being that like every other heroe could have it all.

Warning: Spoilers
The ending was a weak attempt to recreate the awesomeness of Smallville's 10 year build up to its finale.

Instead this series finale was slow and painful.

It became clear that the writers ran out of ideas a long time ago.

Sad because this show was fun and engaging at the start. It all fell apart when they brought in Lex Luthor. Oh well. Thanks for the good episodes.

Pretty good ending to a pretty good good series
plosker11 November 2021
It's always tough to stick the landing on a series finale. This one does a decent enough job of finishing off the villains, bringing back past characters and setting off supergirl on a new course. The action was great and the other characters stories were ended well. My only complaint was the wedding part was sappy and felt like filler for time that should've been spent on Kara. Hopefully we'll see Kara, Brainy, Nia, Jonn & Winn in other DC shows. Thanks for an entertaining DC series.

Supergirl - an end?
MazeMadnessWriter11 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This episode closes out Supergirls six year run, bringing an end to Kara Danvers/Kara Zor El's story - except it kind of doesn't. For a finale, the episode actually provides little closure for audiences regarding the titular character, despite the shows other characters having nicely wrapped up arcs. In some ways this is in fitting with the last two seasons of the show, and particularly the final season, where Kara often felt like a secondary character within her own show. The final 30 seconds leave us asking, "what next?", and needing more despite the show ending.

Kara's identity has been a core conflict throughout the entire show. It has manifested itself as both an internal battle, has created strife within her personal life and relationships, and has resulted in consequences and sacrifices for Kara herself. So in the balance of fairness, her decision to no longer live with a secret identity, to "out" herself to the world, seems both logical and significant.

The problem however lies in the execution - Kara making this choice with 30 seconds left of the show ever means the consequences of such a monumental decision go unexplored. For a season that has been largely bland (albeit with some special moments), uninteresting, full of illogical storylines, and has allowed the main characters arc to stagnate, this would have been a much better story to explore; the story of Kara, and this is why it sort of feels like a final kick in the teeth from creative decision makers.

That being said, Melissa Benoist is just fantastic. I could write endlessly about how talented she is, but suffice to say the show just couldn't be what it is without her. Calista Flockhart's return was one of the few things done very well, and it felt absolutely right that Cat Grant would be the one to set "Kira" on a new path. We also see the return of Winn, James and Mon-El, which was a nice touch for a finale episode, especially the scenes that James shares with Kelly and Esme. The last 20 minutes or so take place at Alex and Kelly's wedding, and this was another thing the episode absolutely got right. It was a beautiful conclusion to their story, but it also felt like a celebration of the wider extended Super family.

And now to the elephant in the room - Kara and Lena. Going into the episode I felt largely unsure how they would leave the relationship between the two. I definitely wasn't expecting a brave decision from the writers/showrunners here, and I think had they intended to explore the pairing this would have happed in season 5 after the big rift between them (often a plot device used to develop romance), and once they had resolved their trust issues. Since Lena was introduced in season 2, there have been undercurrents of romantic tension between the two characters and the pair undoubtedly parallel other canon pairings, however up until season 5 nothing had been particularly overt between them. Throughout season 6 however, there was a change in how the two characters interacted and how their storylines interweaved that made it pretty undeniable they were being coded as romantic. This made their final exchange even more bizarre.

It's clear those responsible for creative decisions of the show know the popularity of the pairing and have absolutely utilised and capitalised on it without delivering. Kara's final one on one exchange with any character is reserved for Lena, marking the significance of their relationship. A relationship she has made clear over and over again is the most important to her second only to her relationship with her sister. Yet their final conversation is utterly bizarre. Framed as a romantic declaration and a thinly veiled reference to coming out, the words scripted don't quite match up; almost an embodiment of the way the show has managed their entire relationship. I can only imagine the frustration, disappointment, and genuine sadness that young LGBTQ fans must have felt at watching it. It is no longer enough to just feel "seen", or to have a space to interpret something how you want.

And yes it is everybody's show, and for the most part it has been brilliantly fantastic (season 1-4 especially), but it is also not fair to use an audience base in the way I think this show has. At implications of queerbaiting several years ago, the show should have made decisions to not frame these two characters in certain ways. Instead they upped the suggestiveness in the final season, which is irresponsible at best and damaging at worst, and I think all involved should be pretty ashamed of themselves. For a show that is meant to be about Hope, it sure left a lot of people without it.
