Germany’s Studio Babelsberg has named a building on its studio lot after filmmaker Wes Anderson. The former Haus 5 will now be known as the Wes Anderson Building. The building houses offices and functional spaces for costume and production design. Anderson filmed his latest feature, The Phoenician Scheme, at the studio last year. Anderson has also used the studio for past productions, including Isle of Dogs, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and Asteroid City.

Filming is underway in Louisiana on the new psychological horror movie Lake Vernon, and Variety has announced the cast this morning.

Former NFL star turned filmmaker Vernon Davis (The Ritual Killer) produces and stars in the film alongside Malcolm Goodwin (“Reacher”), David Anders (“The Vampire Diaries”), Olivia Grace Applegate (“Love and Death”), Andrea Sixtos (“Arrow”) and Tommy Wiseau (Big Shark).

Not only does Davis star and produce, but Lake Vernon is adapted from a story by Davis and Tiffany Toney. The story was adapted for the screen by director Aaron Jay Rome and writer/producer Isaiah Laborde.

In the film, “Old wounds resurface when a fractured group of friends reunites for a weekend retreat at an exclusive lakeside sanctuary,” the film’s official logline reads. “As buried tensions and unspoken betrayals bubble to the surface, the lake itself seems to be listening — watching — offering impossible miracles at a cost none of them understand.

The sportsman turned actor will join the likes of Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), Zoe Colletti, Regan Aliyah and Andrew Liner in the feature, which was granted an Interim Agreement.

The feature follows a group of orphans who head south in search of a new life after viral outbreak that ravages the country’s adult population, only to find themselves in danger.

“I’ve been very fortunate to work with some incredible people early in my acting career, and this is no different,” said Davis. “I’m beyond excited to be part of Destry’s directorial debut, as well as the opportunity to share the screen with such a talented and inspirational cast.

The Ritual Killer is one of the latest thrillers that was released in 2023. The film is another film discussing a chase for a dangerous serial killer and showing us what he is capable of. While the film had an interesting trailer that made people hope that they would get to see an exciting new film, The Ritual Killer turned out to be quite disappointing.

This week in home viewing, the whale topped a bear. “Cocaine Bear” ($19.99) came out on PVOD after its third weekend — standard timing for Universal. Since it was still strong in theaters, home availability would usually guarantee across-the-board #1 rankings at iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu.

But surprise — A24 lowered the price of “The Whale” to $4.99 just before Brendan Fraser’s Best Actor win. The film soared to the top at iTunes and Google Play right after the Oscars.

Both sites rank by transaction, which benefits any lower-cost rental. However, Darren Aronofsky’s film is also #2 at Vudu, which counts by revenue. (Vudu has “Cocaine Bear” at #1).

Meantime, Oscar juggernaut “Everything Everywhere All at Once” — available on streaming as well as theaters — stayed strong at $19.99. That price may have discouraged some buyers, but it still placed fourth or fifth on all charts.

“A Man Called Otto” (Sony), with its price reduced to $5.99, continued its strong chart showing.

Tuesday’s iTunes chart saw a surge for two A24 Oscar-winning films. However, neither of the winning Netflix titles saw its winners reenter the top 10 chart. This week also saw three different films lead the top VOD charts, which is unusual, but even weirder is none placed on all three.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” ($19.99) and “The Whale” ($4.99) jumped to #1 and 2 at iTunes, a platform that’s typically quick to reflect increased interest. The films also climbed to second and third at Google Play, more likely reflecting weekend pre-Oscars interest.

Google Play has “Dragon Ball Hero: Super Hero” on top, while Vudu showed “80 for Brady” as #1. Among the chart leaders, “Everything” and “Dragon Ball” made one other list, while “Brady” is only on Vudu’s. They have worked a thousand and one times, and in addition, we have a starring actor who specializes in thrillers. But, no – it doesn’t work and it doesn’t work in the slightest, with its telefilm photography and its unimaginative scenes, and a script which is quite simply incoherent and created from chunks grabbed from other, more intelligent, offerings in the genre.

Review: The story and screenplay for The Ritual Killer were cobbled together by a writing team of five different people: Bob Bowersox, Francesco Cinquemani, Luca Giliberto, Jennifer Lemmon, and Joe Lemmon. Director George Gallo then endeavored to bring their work to the screen as a film that really feels like it wants to live up to classic, gritty serial killer crime thrillers of the past. They even got a dash of Seven in there by casting Morgan Freeman in a supporting role. As part of the build-up to the release of the movie The Ritual Killer, Screen Media Films has released a new trailer. It shows Cole Hauser and Morgan Freeman, grieving father and detective who has to work with an anthropologist to catch the serial killer.

Exclusive: Frank Grillo has signed on to star opposite Harvey Keitel in Justin Price’s action-thriller Hard Matter for Wonderfilm Media, which is currently in production in Biloxi, Mississippi.

The film written by Price is set in a new America divided by quadrants, in which a power-hungry corporation has taken over the conventional prison system and replaced it with a system of deadly watches. In this version of America, criminals are the new law enforcers that carry out all forms of capital punishment in order to regain their place in society.

Wonderfilm’s Jeff Bowler and Bret Saxon are producing alongside Latavius Powell and Justin Price of Powell and Price Productions, with Richard Salvatore exec producing.

Redbox, whose core business remains renting DVDs from kiosks across the U.S., is upsizing its ambitions in the original movie biz as well as expanding its free, ad-supported streaming platforms in a deal with Lionsgate.

Under a multiyear distribution pact, Lionsgate will handle distribution of Redbox Entertainment titles across home entertainment windows and lead licensing efforts of the films to subscription-streaming services. Redbox says it expects to release 36 original movies per year. Originally, Redbox’s strategy was to distribute the films through its owned-and-operated channels but it’s now looking for wider distribution.

In addition, Redbox entered into a licensing for films and TV shows from Lionsgate’s 17,000-title library for Redbox‘s ad-supported AVOD and free ad-supported television (Fast) services.

Recently released Redbox Entertainment films include “Capone” starring Tom Hardy, “Shadow in the Cloud” starring Chloë Grace Moretz and Nick Robinson, and “Sas: Red Notice” starring Sam Heughan and Ruby Rose.

The feature film follows a detective (Hauser) who is unable to process the death of his daughter and embarks on a hunt for a serial killer who kills based on a brutal tribal ritual known as Muti. He recruits the help of a professor and African anthropologist (Freeman) who hides an unspeakable secret but allows him to go deeper into the killer’s world, which reveals that one man’s insanity is another man’s religion.

The screenplay was written by Bob Bowersox, Jennifer Lemmon, Francesco Cinquemani, Giorgia Iannone, Luca Giliberto and Ferdinando Dell’Omo. “Muti” is based on a story by Joe Lemmon and Francesco Cinquemani.
