A relationship film with depth
dxzmgmvs25 May 2023
After We're Over is a fascinating movie about hope for a love gone south. The plot is believable. The characters are likable and relatable. These are people who care deeply about one another. Viewers cannot help but care about them too. Yet. Is this enough? Can these two former lovers reconnect? The story unfolds in seemingly slow motion. Set in the quiet dark of winter adds to the emotion. However, the film's end, whatever we viewers hope for, is inevitable.

This film's writing has a maturity that so many relationship movies don't achieve. No sugary lines. No cheap shots. The plot relies on sound dialog to capture viewers. It builds efficiently with grace and speed. It ends with awe for the makers of this film.

An Ode to Growth
aro201219 May 2023
This felt like the relationship version of Memento--it was an earnest and heartfelt look at the two distinct phases of a relationship--the beginning of the love, and the beginning of the moving on. Closure can take a lot of different forms, and the relationships in After We're Over are no different. The characters, what they're looking for, what they wind up finding--they're all very nuanced--in the writing and the performances. The structure felt really stream-of-consciousness, so if you're a stickler for the paint by numbers style storytelling, this isn't for you. But you should open your mind--you might find gems like this. Also, of particular note, the soundtrack was absolutely incredible.

Great film!

I had no idea what the movie was about going in. I hadn't seen a trailer. I hadn't read a review. I was going in blind, and I'm glad I did! It was a pleasant surprise. AFTER WE'RE OVER is a wonderful character study, focusing entirely on two people (Sazerac and Zelzah), ex-lovers who reunite after a year. The film is beautifully shot and well-acted. I especially enjoyed how the film seamlessly cut between past and present, between the "good times" of their relationship and the awkward/painful reunion. And the ending (NO SPOILERS) is poignant and profound. It truly captures the essence of modern-day love & breakups. Not to mention, it's also a love letter to St. Louis. Any St. Louisans out there should definitely check it out!

This movie is Art!

The performances are stunningly genuine. The story is incredibly relatable. The cinematography is epic. The score is beautiful. The editing is engrossing.

The movie explores the complexity of relationships, the baggage we bring to them, and the importance of self-love. As an architect, I adored the layering of St Louis's history, the impacts of redlining, and using our shared history to find individual paths forward. As a takeaway, I'm inspired to do more and take more for myself. I only have amazing reviews for After We're Over and need to plan a trip to St. Louis. Cause truly, where else can you find a bus hanging from a building?

A Love Letter to St. Louis, and to Ourselves
ermatingersalas-co17 May 2023
I cannot overstate how much I enjoyed this film - from the script to the acting and the editing to the cinematography, every piece of this film worked. While there are really only two actors, the city of St. Louis takes up all the space the rest of an ensemble cast would occupy. Although this is a film about love, lost and found, that message of love transcends the boundaries of dialogue and is extended to the setting. Anyone who has been in a failed relationship or two will instantly identify and experience an immediate empathy for the protagonist(s) in this deeply human movie - I highly recommend!

A beautiful, heartfelt movie

I loved following these two characters and seeing how their relationship and sense of self develops throughout the course of this film! The dialogue is very well written and had the perfect mix of fun and emotional moments. And the actors are so talented and had the attention of the audience the entire time as they made us go from laughing to smiling to tearing up. And the cinematography is very modern and impressive. I constantly was thinking "wow that's an amazing shot." And I love how much this movie showed us St. Louis-- a city I've never been to but now must visit! Overall, definitely check out this movie, it's a delight.

Great Indie Romance Film set in St. Louis
jcyoung-2883516 November 2023
I really enjoyed this film! While it's an indie, the cinematography looks excellent, and the score was really well crafted also. I love a good romance story, and I think there are piece of this that anyone can relate to. Overall, definitely plays like a Drama, but also has some funny and cute moments peppered in. The formatting is also really cool in regards to flashbacks and how they're used to interrupt the linear storytelling in regards to specific locations. Really enjoyed that aspect of it as well.

I also really enjoyed that it was set in St. Louis, which is an awesome city and I can't recall many (if any) other films that are set there. Overall, a great watch and definitely I film I could see myself re-watching again down the line.

Really Pulls You In

This tightly focused study in a failed relationship needs no distractions to keep you interested. I don't remember any characters in this excellent film other than the former lovers. Their affection for each other is clear, but we're not sure whether there will be a reconnection until the very end (no spoilers). The dialogue is crucial in this sort of movie, and it's spot on. The direction, acting, and cinematography is so good that you don't notice it until after the film ends and you realize they nailed it without a false note. Watch this film so you can tell friends that you've been following the work of these creatives since before they got famous. I'll be very surprised if these actors and director don't have long, solid careers in film.
