When Celebrity Goes Horribly Wrong 2
jboothmillard13 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
When I read about this documentary programme advertised, I recognised a couple of the things mentioned that would be included, and I had my guesses of what else may be included, so I was really looking forward to watching. Basically, the show was a three-hour collection of clips, focusing on the mostly negative news about celebrities, in the world of television, film, music, comedy, entertainment, reality TV, journalism, politics and other fields. These included those captured on camera, filmed and in pictures on the news, of celebrities and their scandals, meltdowns, controversies, and various other shocking, embarrassing, cringeworthy and hilarious incidents, in Britain and/or around the world. The celebrity clips included: Jeremy Clarkson getting a pie in the face by a protestor whilst receiving an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree at Oxford University; and at the 2019 TV Choice Awards, Emmerdale's Asan N'jie was fighting with Hollyoaks' Jamie Lomas at the venue, N'jie threatened to "knife" Lomas, which cost him his role in the soap. There was also: phone camera footage of Olly Murs falling down the stairs at Guilfest; and Katie Hopkins discussed her troubles, using her column in The Sun to voice her opinion on the migrant crisis, saying "Rescue boats? I'd use gunships to stop migrants" and "No, I don't care. Show me pictures of coffins, show me bodies floating in water, play violins and show me skinny people looking sad." This caused national outrage, but things went really wrong for Hopkins after she sent a tweet, accusing Jack Monroe of vandalising the Whitehall war memorial, Monroe won thousands in damages, while Hopkins lost thousands, if not over a million pounds, to others who had a case against her controversial comments, she lost her £1 million home and many of her jobs in the media. Other celebrities going wrong were: filmed on a phone camera, Nish Kumar facing a tough crowd at the annual Christmas fundraiser at Lord's Taverners, the audience turned and booed, not wanting him to do political comedy, he refused to leave until he was ushered off; and Emmerdale's Roxanne Pallett on Celebrity Big Brother claimed she was assaulted by Ryan Thomas, this scandal was called "punchgate", Ryan was heartbroken as he had done nothing wrong, he was relieved when he heard the audience shouting "get Roxy out", Pallett quit the show and apologised for her face accusations, and the show received over 25,000 complaints. Further celebrity foul-ups included: Winona Ryder caught shoplifting in a department store in 2001, she was taken to court, sentenced to community services, fined thousands and told if she repeated this sort of behaviour, she would go to jail; and EastEnders star Danniella Westbrook discussing the dark side of fame, including going out with Brian Harvey, getting addicted to cocaine (up to £300 a day!), losing her septum, going into rehab, chavvy pictures of her wearing Burberry which lost the company money, and her doing reality TV and occasional returns to EastEnders. Bad celebrity incidents included: former Liverpool football player and pundit Jamie Carragher is shouted at by fan in his car, filming him on his phone, after Carragher's tram lost, Jamie spits at him, hitting the guy's daughter, this resulted in Carragher being suspended for some time; Seann Walsh suffered the "curse" of Strictly Come Dancing, when he was caught on camera kissing his dance partner Katya Jones, he had a girlfriend of five years, Rebecca Humphries, and Katya was married to fellow dancer Neil Jones; and Kim Woodburn on Celebrity Big Brother had a fight with Nicola McLean, all housemates got abuse and security were called in when Kim exploded, she was temporarily removed, and eventually left the house later to an audience booing. There were small clips of the paparazzi getting in the way of and angering celebrities, including Tobey Maguire, Orlando Bloom, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, and Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. There was also: Robert De Niro in a bad mood following a divorce custody battle for his daughter, he was filmed calling his driver on the phone, and hiding his face behind newspapers; and Harry Potter star Jamie Waylett, aka Vincent Crabbe, discussed his misfortunes, after being caught smoked cannabis, his relationship with mother breaking down, using cocaine, growing his own cannabis, arrested and dropped from the final two Harry Potter films, and he was caught on CCTV during the 2011 London riots, he spent two years in prison. Pop stars going wrong included: P!nk pulled offstage by a wrongly attached harness during the Funhouse Summer Carnival Tour in Germany, she fell badly and was heard swearing in pain; Madonna performed at the Eurovision Song Contest, singing "Like a Prayer", unfortunately she was out of tune, this was followed by hew new song "Future", including a political statement for Israel-Palestine unity, she was sued; and David Cassidy was filmed on a phone performing onstage in Los Angeles, he was inebriated and forgetting his words, and he fell offstage, this footage went viral. A-list actors going wrong included: Shia LeBeouf seen wearing a paper bag saying "I Am Not Famous Anymore", he was caught on a police body camera being arrested for shouting abuse at actors and spitting at a police officer, and in another drunken rant being aggressive and threatening violence; Reese Witherspoon was filmed kicking off as her husband was arrested for drink-driving, she was handcuffed and tried to reason with another officer; and Empire star Jussie Smollett was reported being attacked by two racist and homophobic men, but it turned out he paid them to stage the fake hate crime, Smollett was charged and his character was removed from Empire. Celebrity blunders also included: Bruce Willis and Demi Moore's daughter Scout was photographed by paparazzi, and a camera flash reveals her boobs in her see-through dress; Boardwalk Empire star Paz de la Huerta was refused to the enter the Golden Globes afterparty, being incredibly drunk, she tripped on the pavement, and could not hold a pen trying to sign autographs; and Alec Baldwin has had many bust-ups with the paparazzi, he was caught on camera being constantly followed by a reporter, Baldwin pushed him away, and smacked a phone from his hands, but he stopped himself getting violent. Finally, snooker player Willie Thorne discussed (posthumously) his gambling addiction, betting on horse races, his debts kept mounting and he borrowed from many sources, he retired from snooker but continued gambling, and attempted suicide, he filed for bankruptcy with debts of up to £1 million, he split from his wife and his home was repossessed, Willie Thorne died in June 2020.

I had my guesses what celebrity incidents would be included, the bad ones, the funny ones and the awkward ones, I always enjoy the nostalgia seeing these moments again, but it was good to learn about the serious stuff as well, some of them I had only heard a little about, overall it was an interesting and watchable documentary.

Narrated by Ellis, with contributions from Calum Best, journalist/broadcaster Garry Bushell, Celebrity Big Brother's Jordan Davies, Frankie Essex (Joey's sister), Jade Ewen, comedian Rachel Fairburn, Jenni Falconer, journalist/broadcaster Nick Ferrari, Bianca Gascoigne, Celebrity Big Brother's Chloe Goodman, Lauren Harries, So Solid Crew's Harvey, Kieran Hayler (Katie Price's former husband), The X Factor's Honey G, Katie Hopkins, Collabro singer Jamie Lambert, Nicola McLean, The X Factor's Leon Mallett, Carole Malone, comedian David Morgan, presenter Jonny Nelson, Kirsten O'Brien, former footballer Jermaine Pennant, George Sampson, Fia Tarrant (DJ, and Chris's daughter), Toby Tarrant (DJ, and Chris's son), Willie Throne, Michael Underwood, Kim Woodburn, and former Coronation Street actor Scott Wright. Very good!
