On the whole, Pinkie Pie was a good character in 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic'. She was annoying in some episodes but in the best of the episodes that has her in a prominent role she was very funny and relatable. Up to this point of 'Pony Life's' run, her character writing has been nothing special and the same goes for her storylines. Wasn't expecting an awful lot from either "Pie v Pie" or "Superb Six", as the stories did sound very flimsy and bland and none of the previous episodes of the show centered around food and galas were that good.
"Pie vs Pie" and "Superb Six" were both a little better than expected. As far as the episodes centered around food/cooking and galas go, they are not among the best. Other episodes do worse when it comes to the character writing, as Pinkie Pie's character writing does have moments, and in the humour department (again moments here, especially in "Pie vs Pie"). Neither segment however is particularly good however and have a lot of faults, and ones common in 'Pony Life'.
There are good things here. Andrea Libman's voice acting is full of spirit and nuance. Pinkie Pie is thankfully more amusing and easier to relate to in scenarios that suit her personality well, especially in "Pie vs Pie".
Furthermore, there is never anything hilarious, but there is more humour than usual and it's more amusing and less childish than usual as well.
However, a lot is not good. The animation continues to look cheap, especially in "Superb Six", the music is not infectious or memorable and grates. The writing has moments, but mostly sounds awkward and simplistic as well as like the writers were trying too hard to appeal to a younger audience. Both stories are predictable and paper thin, "Pie vs Pie" did feel over-stretched. There is no real soul or charm and it all feels too tame.
While liking Pinkie Pie on the whole, some of her character flaws do come through in her frustrated moments in "Superb Six" where she could have handled things more maturely. Didn't like the rest of the character writing, her friends are written in a too overly simple stereotypical manner and the chemistry doesn't feel like a friendship. The supporting characters are not much better, Octavio has very little personality and Snips and Snails are so obnoxious here that one wonders why anybody would want to help them.
All in all, could have been worse but not particularly good still despite glimpses of improvement. 4/10.
