Arnold Schwarzenegger has accomplished a fair bit in his life. The man came over from Austria having served in the army, claimed the Mr. Olympia title a full seven times, then launched one of the most successful Hollywood careers in the history of the industry, before becoming governor of California and finding time to marry a Kennedy in the process. But surely what he's really concerned with are his Rotten Tomato scores.
Having recently starred in his own Netflix series, "Fubar," recounted his remarkable life in the streamer's "Arnold" documentary, and whipped Jake from State Farm into shape for a Super Bowl commercial, the Austrian Oak is now gearing up for his Christmas comedy with "Reacher" star Alan Ritchson. But between all this stuff, you've got to imagine that Arnie was eager to hurry back to his trailer and pore over the pages of Rt, desperately scouring for the latest...

However, they came with a half-baked script to meet with the Predator star, who asked them to come back when they were completely done with the script.

Peacock has given straight-to-series order to Mr. Throwback, a mockumentary comedy headlined by NBA star Steph Curry and Happy Endings alum Adam Pally. The pickup for the project, from Happy Endings creator David Caspe and writing duo Matthew Libman and Daniel Libman, was announced Wednesday at TCA along with three drama series orders by Peacock.
As Deadline reported exclusively last April, Mr. Throwback was originally set up at NBC for development. A couple of years ago, NBCUniversal installed a centralized development team for NBC, the company’s basic cable networks and Peacock, with projects sometimes shepherded well into development before a decision is made which platform it would go to.
Additionally, NBC in the past year or so has taken a turn toward multi-camera comedies, which cost less to produce than single-camera shows. All of the network’s existing three half-hour series, Night Court, Lopez vs. Lopez and Extended Family,...

James Mangold’s Bob Dylan film, A Complete Unknown, is switching bandmates as Edward Norton replaces Benedict Cumberbatch as the American folk singer and social activist Pete Seeger. Cumberbatch must exit the project because of scheduling issues. The biography stars Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan, with Monica Barbaro playing Joan Baez, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, and Nick Offerman as Alan Lomax.
James Mangold directs from a script written by Jay Cocks (Gangs of New York), with Mangold making revisions. A Complete Unknown focuses on a young Bob Dylan (Chalamet) who rocks the music world in 1965 by performing with an electric guitar for the first time, alerting people to a new sound for his signature brand. Meanwhile, Sylvie Russo (Fanning) enters the story as a university student, artist, and Dylan’s early-’60s love interest. Production for A Complete Unknown is gearing up for a New York production.

When Netflix released its first-ever Engagement Report — a revealing look into what (and how much) people are watching within the streamer’s film and TV catalog — live-action adult and young adult series like Ginny and Georgia, The Night Agent and Fubar were among those that topped nearly a billion hours watched.
But between January and June 2023, seasons of animated originals Sonic Prime, Gabby’s Dollhouse, Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse, My Dad the Bounty Hunter and The Creature Cases also ranked among the 500 most-viewed series (out of 18,000), as did acquisitions like Paw Patrol, CoComelon, Pj Masks and Peppa Pig.
And while much of the streamer’s most popular animated content came from its kids and family programming, the report reveals new and previously released seasons of adult animation and anime entries like Castlevania, Love, Death & Robots, Bee and Puppycat, Disenchantment, Big Mouth, and Skull Island were among the top 22 percent of watched titles.

New insights are still being unearthed after Netflix dumped the viewership data for nearly its entire catalog from the first half of 2023, which includes more than 18,000 titles.
One of those observations is that young adult and female-centric content are doing especially well for the streamer. In fact, though The Night Agent is ranked No. 1 in terms of hours viewed, that’s really only because the data separates individual seasons of a series. Ginny & Georgia was actually the most-watched title from January to June on Netflix, with a combined 967.2M hours viewed between Seasons 1 and 2.
Season 2 of Ginny & Georgia debuted on January 5, and it alone racked up 665.1M hours viewed.
Season 1 tallied 302.1M (aka 30M “views”), likely reinvigorated by those catching up before watching the new episodes, as well as audiences who were introduced to the title for the first time.

As we wrap up our year-end coverage, IndieWire looks back at the people, projects, and ideas that defined 2023 — and what’s coming next.
I miss the days when Hollywood believed a great TV show could sustain an entire network. You know, back when television was still growing, and rising brands were built around groundbreaking, widely respected original programs. HBO was where you watched “The Sopranos,” AMC had “Mad Men,” and Netflix streamed “Orange Is the New Black.” Premium cable expanded to basic cable, which expanded to streaming, which expanded and expanded and expanded — almost always by touting the next great series as the best reason to tune in, sign up, or seek out a previously undiscovered channel in your satellite guide.

Netflix released a huge amount of streaming data Tuesday — viewing totals for more than 18,000 movies and seasons of TV for the first half of 2023.
Taken as a whole, it’s almost an overwhelming amount of information that speaks to Netflix’s ability to engage its huge subscriber base (just under 239 million for the end of the period covered in the data dump) — and maybe not a ton more? The stats presented are for total hours viewed, which is how Netflix measures engagement across its portfolio — but it’s also not the metric the streamer uses to order its weekly top 10 lists. For those, it uses the “view” formula of total watch time divided by running time, which somewhat levels the playing field for films and series with shorter run times. (And there are, of course, economic factors and other metrics that influence decision-making that the company will continue to keep in house.

Netflix ripped the curtain wide open on Tuesday, releasing viewership data for nearly its entire catalog of original and acquired content.
The streamer says this will be a new bi-annual report, with the inaugural spreadsheet capturing viewing time for 18,000 titles (or 99% of the Netflix catalog) from January to June 2023. It is an unprecedented move for any streamer, and it comes on the heels of a ferocious fight for data transparency spearheaded by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA during its contract negotiations with the studios this year. While Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos insists the move is not a response to the guilds, the timing certainly raises questions.
However, it is not necessarily surprising that Netflix, of all the streamers, would be the first to release data on this scale. Netflix has been around much longer and likely has a better handle on its own data and success measurements than many of its competitors.

Netflix is giving the world a look behind the curtain by releasing viewing numbers for more than 18,000 titles across the streaming platform. The data covers the first half of 2023, with titles like The Night Agent, Wednesday, Beef, and Fubar a part of the mix. The 18,214 titles cover films and television with at least 50,000 viewing hours, representing 99 percent of all viewing on the service.
Netflix Vice President of Strategy and Analysis Lauren Smith says this is the most significant window into Netflix’s inner workings, as the company has been reluctant to share this type of information in the past.
Netflix’s The Night Agent Season 1 leads the pack, with 812.1 million hours streamed. So much for the black box.
Netflix today has revealed viewership data for 99% of its entire catalog, or more than 18,000 titles available around the world. It published the numbers in a report, What We Watched, capturing viewing from January to June of 2023. It is the first edition of a planned semi-annual look at viewership. The initiative aims to document the the full picture instead of the existing glimpses of only the top-performing programming. The company pointed out that its existing Top 10 lists have a large degree of overlap with the full data, with 60% of the titles in the first-half study having made appearances in the Top 10 at some point.
“This is a big step forward for Netflix and our industry,” the company wrote in a blog post. “We believe the viewing information in this report — combined with our weekly Top 10 and Most Popular lists — will give creators and our industry deeper insights into our audiences,...

Netflix is expanding its viewership data transparency with the release of its first biannual report covering six months of streaming habits on the platform, revealing for the first time how licensed content like USA Network drama “Suits” performs alongside the streamer’s originals.
The new report, titled “What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report,” covers more than 18,000 titles and nearly 100 billion hours viewed between January-June 2023. It includes: 1) hours viewed for every title (both Netflix original and licensed TV shows and movies) watched for more than 50,000 hours during that period; 2) the premiere date for any Netflix original TV series or film; and 3) whether a title was available globally.
Each piece of that information is key here, because these findings aren’t as cut and dried as Netflix’s weekly Top 10 reports and “Most Popular” lists. For example, at the top of this report is “The Night Agent,” a series that debuted...

You guys, we did it. It’s the end of the year, and if you’re reading this right now, it means you still have an appetite for television. And not just any television, mind you, but the best new TV shows on the market. After the year we’ve had, that’s an accomplishment. It means you made it through “Ahsoka” and “Secret Invasion,” “Citadel” and “The Continental.” Heck, you survived “The Idol,” — aka the greatest threat to HBO’s sterling reputation since David Zaslav — and you still want to watch Hollywood’s attempts at serialized TV. I salute you.
Try not to read too much into the fact that none of the aforementioned titles were Netflix originals. The de facto winner of the streaming wars still had a pretty rough year when it came to creating quality TV — or, to use the company’s preferred analogy, its “gourmet cheeseburgers” were pretty damn dry.

Especially in its early installments, 24 used to build in a midseason pause. Jack Bauer would achieve what he thought was his goal — securing the bomb, identifying the conspiratorial kingpin, etc. — and then, after enough time to take a breath but not enough time to use the bathroom, he would discover a Bigger bomb or realize that behind the apparently Big Bad was a Bigger Bad. Gasp!
But what if, instead of merely taking that breath, Jack Bauer had celebrated securing yet another victory for America by doing the keg stand to end all keg stands or dropping a tab of acid — and only then figured out that he still had half a day’s worth of torture, cliffhangers and mountain lions in store?
That — or perhaps just “It’s The Hangover as a ’90s action movie!” — is the hook for Netflix’s new series Obliterated, from the Cobra Kai trio of Jon Hurwitz,...

While it's known as a sci-fi action classic, any fan of "The Terminator" knows it's basically a slasher movie with a terrifying killer robot at its center. James Cameron's 1984 breakout has been made even more terrifying by the recent advances in AI and Cameron's belief that the events in "The Terminator" could happen in real life — though that's still not quite as horrifying as whatever AI-written garbage Joe Russo helps usher into existence in the near future.
Anyway, the point is that "The Terminator," aside from being a touchstone of the sci-fi action genre, is also pretty darn scary. Arnold Schwarzenegger's cyborg killer is best described by Michael Biehn's Kyle Reese in the film when he says, "It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop ... ever, until you are dead,...

When the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes got underway earlier this year, many Netflix shows were left with fates up in the air.
Now that the strikes are over and Hollywood is getting back to normal, the series won't be making the cut for additional seasons are being revealed.
Deadline revealed Wednesday that Shadow & Bone, Glamorous, Agent Elvis, Farzar, and Captain Fall will not be returning.
Shadow & Bone is the highest profile of the five shows, having made it to a second season.

Netflix has canceled five original series in the aftermath of the Hollywood double strike. The streamer decided not to renew live-action dramas “Shadow and Bone” and the Kim Cattrall-led “Glamorous,” along with animated series “Agent Elvis,” “Farzar” and “Captain Fall.”
The news comes as the streamer evaluates the impact of the long work stoppage related to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. There have been cancellations and un-renewals across the industry related to the production halt, with many freshman series particularly vulnerable since it would take too long for them to turn around new episodes and stay in the cultural conversation.
Exceptions include hit series like “The Night Agent” and “One Piece,” who’s impressive debuts guaranteed them quick renewals even during the strikes.
“Shadow and Bone” is the only sophomore series in the bunch. A hit in its first season, the show is inspired by the Grishaverse novels by Leigh Bardugo.

“Shadow and Bone” and “Glamorous,” along with adult animated series “Agent Elvis,” “Farzaar,” and “Captain Fall” will not be returning for new seasons at Netflix, Variety has confirmed.
The announcement comes as Hollywood streamers and broadcasters continue to assess the impact left by the work stoppages due to the months-long WGA and SAG-Aftra strikes. Sources say Netflix’s decision to cancel stemmed from various reasons including performance and impact from the strike — as the industry evaluates production schedules, scheduling shifts, etc.
As Netflix has said about previous cancellations, the streamer continues to look at viewing versus cost as it evaluates shows. In the case of series like “Agent Elvis,” “Glamorous,” “Farzaar,” and “Captain Fall,” each show only ran for one season before its cancellation. While “Shadow and Bone” received a cancellation after running its second season, which arrived on the streamer in March.

‘Shadow And Bone’, ‘Glamorous’ & ‘Agent Elvis’ Among 5 Series Canceled By Netflix Amid Strike Impact
Exclusive: Netflix will not be going forward with more seasons of live-action series Shadow and Bone and Glamorous and adult animated comedies Agent Elvis, Farzar and Captain Fall.
The decision was made a week after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike and a month and a half after the end of the WGA work stoppage as networks and platforms continue to evaluate the impact from the strike-related seven-month production shutdown.
While there had been a slew of series cancellations and un-renewals by linear networks and streamers during and immediately after the strikes, Netflix had largely refrained from making cancellation decisions during the past 6½ months while announcing a number of renewals, including One Piece (S2), Ginny & Georgia (S3 and S4); The Lincoln Lawyer (S3), Xo, Kitty (S2), Heartstopper (S2 and S3), The Night Agent (S2 picked up on the eve of the WGA strike), The Diplomat (S2), Fubar (S2), Sweet Magnolias...

Considering how big the Terminator franchise has been, you’d think there would have been more TV-focused content based on it. Until now, the only T.V. version of the Terminator we had was the (rather good) The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Yet, with the film franchise on ice post-Dark Fate, Netflix is teasing an all-new streaming spin-off, albeit an animated one!
Indeed, as part of their Geeked Week event, the streamer unveiled a teaser trailer (which is little more than a title at this point) for Terminator: The Anime Series. Sporting music that pays homage to Brad Fiedel’s iconic score, the teaser promised a new addition to the franchise from Skydance, Japan Animation Studio Production I.G., and Mattson Tomlin (Mother/Android). At the moment, James Cameron doesn’t seem to be involved.
Here’s the synopsis from Deadline:

Fighting for streaming residuals has been a hard-fought sticking point for the writers and actors negotiations, but bottom-line results of the new bonus threshold may be limited.
Less than 5 percent of Netflix originals in 2022 “would have triggered performance bonuses under the new contract between the Writers Guild of America and major studios,” Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw wrote on Sunday. The new deal between the WGA and the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) pays out performance bonuses if at least 20 percent of a streaming platform’s U.S. users consume a new original film or TV series within its first 90 days.
Shaw’s rate of 5 percent or less accounts for all Netflix original titles, he wrote — including foreign-language, animated, and unscripted programs that aren’t governed by the WGA deal. So while, say, docuseries “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal” crosses the threshold with a 30 percent share of U.

If there’s one thing Arnold Schwarzenegger is easily identifiable for, it’s his thick accent that’s remained a signature of his public image from the ’80s onward. But when the “Terminator” star began his career, he initially tried to curb the accent to no avail.
Schwarzenegger appeared on a recent episode of “The Graham Norton Show,” (via Insider), during which he spoke about the beginnings of his American acting career. The actor revealed that he had multiple coaches to help him break into Hollywood, one of which was an “accent removal” coach meant to help him successfully sound American. Schwarzenegger is Austrian, and his first language is German, his home country’s official national language.
“I had an English coach, and an acting coach, and a speech coach, and an accent-removal coach — who has passed away since then, but I mean, I should have otherwise gotten my money back,...

Arnold Schwarzenegger is hoping to be useful to Peyton and Eli Manning.
The Terminator and Fubar star is heading to Manningcast on Monday night as Justin Herbert’s Los Angeles Chargers take on Zach Wilson’s New York Jets.
He is the latest big-name star to appear on the Omaha Productions show after the likes of Barack Obama, Will Ferrell, Jon Stewart, Condoleezza Rice, Lebron James, and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.
Peyton Manning has been looking forward to Schwarzenegger’s appearance. To prepare, he has been doing research and thinking of the best way to bring him into the show in appropriate fashion. Peyton calls Arnold to pitch him on ideas and the call doesn’t go as planned.
The series, otherwise known Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli, airs on ESPN2 and ESPN+. It has aired since 2021 and has won two Sports Emmy Awards for Outstanding Live Sports...

Arnold Schwarzenegger agrees: Today’s leading candidates for U.S. president are too old.
The 76-year-old action icon and former California governor was asked about the upcoming 2024 election during an interview with the BBC.
“I just hope that America finds some really young blood,” Schwarzenegger said. “Because to me, it is a little bit odd that we are having a battle between people today in the late 70s and early 80s, rather than people in the 40s and 50s or maybe even younger, and have them have a chance at this great, great job.”
This is, of course, hardly a controversial take: Polls have clearly shown that voters would prefer different options than the two expected candidates — 80-year-old President Biden and 77-year-old former President Trump — with voters citing Biden’s age as a particular concern. Yet neither party seems willing to ditch their frontrunner for one of the many younger options waiting in the wings.
