Beautifully shot thriller; Engaging and Daring!
Amyth4723 February 2022
My Rating : 7/10

Bollywood doesn't make very many of these and the few they do make fall short somewhere or other. 'A Thursday' however delivers from the start and gets to work!

Yami Gautam and Atul Kulkarni do a brilliant job and hopefully do more of this type of genre, the characters really suit them here.

Simple storyline executed beautifully with the Mumbai rains as a backdrop. Recommended.

Excellent movie with a social topic to think about seriously
gnaidu-1494617 February 2022
I do not know about you, but to me, this movie would have been a blockbuster if it had been released in theaters in normal times. Simple, thought provoking social sensitive topic with excellent screenplay by Yami Gautham.

Hats off to the entire team and the Writer/Director - Behzad Khambata.

Yami's career changing/best performance
Biswas_17 February 2022
For the time being, let's forget about "A Wednesday " despite both films having the same theme of a rogue man giving a social message at the end after creating a ruckus. Reason is , that film was as a whole a really smart slick tensed thriller. Thursday is not a smart film as a whole but definitely has smart elements in it in parts. Let me put out the goods and bads in points:-

GOOD:-

1. Yami Gautam Dhar! Has to be her career changing and best performance. Just like how Alia had surprised audience with her performance in Raazi when Noone expected much from her, Yami too has given an unexpectedly pyscho performance, completely different from her Fair n lovely image she carried. She nails her dialogue delivery. She makes her conversations tense. She was born to play this role.

2. Addition of nursery rhymes in the background as a battle or tense scene would take place is a slick move.

3. Atul Kulkarni returns back with a bang! Terrific performance that further elevates the tension in this film. He basically is similar to the role which Jimmy Shergill played in Wednesday.

4. The twist at the end. Many won't be able to predict it. Seems like Behzad Khambatta is a genius when it comes to revealing twists just like he did in his previous film Blank. Just that the film gives absolutely no hint as to what that twist is , makes viewers watch till the end.

5. Quite an engrossing screenplay although I felt Wednesday had a more tense and engrossing screenplay.

NEGATIVES:-

1. Unnecessarily added a media angle that gives it a bit of Dhamaka/Terror Live feeling at one point.

2. The responses on social media shown on screen seemed cringy especially that poll thing which yami created.

3. Poor acting by support cast (I mean people standing in public or the media men) they looked cringy and a wasted Neha Dhupia.

4. Poor portrayal of the PM.

These are pretty ingnorable negatives cuz the overall product is good enough to make you like it. Behzad Khambatta needs to just polish his work a little more and he could well be the next neeraj Pandey as I see this film is a much better product than his previous work "Blank".

A Thursday needs audience
meeraj-1054617 February 2022
It is a great movie which has Ample twists and turns to keep you hooked till the end.

The climax is the major highlight, though little predictable but effective

Yami Gautam's range as an actress is indefinite and she is the perfect example that to be successful you don't need PR machinery or a controversy.

Must watch for its earnest attempt.

'A Thursday' has a thought provoking climax, but the movie in itself feels like a half hearted attempt at making a thriller.
Perspicuity15 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The climax of the film almost makes up for the lackluster ninety minutes preceding it. At the crux of 'A Thursday' lies a very sensitive issue that needs to be talked about, but as a movie it's not as gripping as I was hoping it would be after watching the trailer. A key problem with the film is that it does not have enough in its story. The runtime has been stretched to over two hours simply because of plot convenience.

THINGS THAT WORK :

1. The reveal towards the end and Yami Gautam's acting in those scenes are the strongest aspects of the film. The problem that she talks about is very real and one can't even imagine the plight of all those girls who have to go through the ordeal. The reveal and the climax changes the mood of the film and leaves a deep impact on the viewer.

2. The acting performance of Atul Kulkarni as Javed Khan felt a little forced, and also it wasn't a very well written character, but since Atul Kulkarni is such a seasoned actor, he has managed to put up a decent performance. Dimple Kapadia and Neha Dhupia have done pretty decent job considering the limited scope provided to them by their respective roles. Karanvir Sharma as Rohit Mirchandani is quite impressive.

3. There are no songs in the film, which was quite a relief. Finally, Indian Filmmakers have realized that there are certain films in which songs end up breaking the flow, regardless of how beautiful they may be.

THINGS THAT DON'T WORK :

1. The movie takes a lot of time to get to its point. For a long period of time you have no idea as to what is the plan and why exactly is Naina Jaiswal doing what she is doing. The movie tests your patience so much that at one point you feel like saying exactly what Atul Kulkarni says in the film, "Why don't you tell me everything at the same time!" This film has a similar setting to that of Neeraj Pandey's 'A Wednesday', but a key difference is that while 'A Wednesday' had a twist at the end, this one has a reveal. We keep waiting for some sort of explanation as to why Naina is doing what she is doing, but we only get those answers towards the end, whereas 'A Wednesday' misdirected us into believing one thing and then shocked us at the end. The basic idea behind both films is quite similar, but 'A Wednesday' was much more gripping throughout its runtime. It's wrong to compare two films, but this film has taken so much inspiration from 'A Wednesday' that I can't help but think about it.

2. The first thing that the technical team of Police does in an investigation is to find out if the suspect or criminal has any previous crime history or he/she is mentioned in the Police records. In this film, it never happens. Police only start looking when Naina asks them to look into their records. Police just stood there doing nothing, waiting for Naina's order, I don't think that's how it happens. If they had searched their database, they would have found out about Naina much earlier.

3. Yami Gautam is a pretty good actress, but in this film her acting was quite inconsistent. She wasn't quite convincing as a villain. Every time she had to threaten someone with a wide eyed expression, she just couldn't deliver the scene with full conviction. She has a lovely screen presence, but her psychopath act just didn't come across as believable.

4. it's difficult to believe that a single woman, who is confirmed to be not associated with any terrorist organization, could not be overpowered by the armed forces. I don't think something like that can happen in real life. In one particular scene, armed policemen are trying to enter the house, and as soon as Naina fires a gun shot, they retract and decide not to go ahead, now how often does that happen ?

5. If a situation like this arises in real life, no matter how desperate the kidnapper may come across, the Prime Minister won't go in to have a meeting with her in person. That was a bit too unreal. I know things can get tricky if small children are held hostage, but to think that it would force the Prime Minister to get involved, is a bit too much.

6. Naina pretends to kill a child at the beginning of the film, and after that the child just disappears. He doesn't make a sound, doesn't feel hungry, he doesn't feel like going back to his friends and doesn't feel like something is off in the house. The writers and the director just casually brushed it under the carpet hoping that viewers won't really pay much attention to this plot hole.

'A Thursday' has a critically important social issue at the crux of it, but whether the solution that it asks for is correct or not, that's up for debate. While there is no denying that rapists deserve the most severe form of punishment, but it still has to be proven. Taking the word of a victim as proof and giving the suspect capital punishment could be dangerous, as not all cases are authentic. What's more important is to bring a change in the society as a whole, parents need to provide their boys with the right guidance, teach them to have respect for every individual and make them understand the importance of consent. A number of movies are tarnishing the image of women by showing them as objects of desire, this needs to stop, and filmmakers need to start treating women as human beings, who are working as hard as the men in building this world.

Great if taken only for ethics & no practical nature.
MuviFan7317 February 2022
Story: A nursery (probably) school teacher take hostages her children and asks for ransom. What's the deeper reason behind her stunt is what the story is about.

Cinematography: Justified. The surroundings where children dwell, where policemen are present, office of authorities, etc are pictured well.

Direction: The story is simple. It is efficient in striking the audience. Direction is justified

Final Verdict: When such situation come, no PM will confront directly even if it's for children. This is where story falls unrealistic. The teacher would have lost her life for such a stunt. For entertainment purpose it's great.

Really gripping from start
ajaygaddapod17 February 2022
A sincere advice. Ignore the over acting of few but the leads yami gautam (most underrated till date) and Dimple Kapadia are just amazing. Watch it for the sensitive issue it portrays so beautifully. A Thursday a really good story & thriller.

This film revolves around how Naina Jaiswal-Yami Gautam, an enterprising teacher running her playschool called 'Little Dots' for young children, resorts to desperate measures to make her voice heard and get justice.

Flawed story, bad direction ruin good intentions!
sulabh-r-j18 February 2022
If good intentions or subjects ensured a good film, then Thursday would have been a really good film. But sadly, that's not the case. This film is not a sequel to ' A Wednesday'but the plot points are quite similar.

The story has a lot of weak elements. The kidnapping and turns around it seem childish and just to create fake shock and twists.

While Yami does act with sincerity, but the countless close in shots and her expressions are simply obnoxious. The repeated phone calls become too irritating which wasn't the case in Wednesday. When a film is designed just to cash in on a final twist without logic, and with loopholes, then you know the film is more of a gimmick. The handling of the script is extremely poor. A Wednesday is a classic and it's advisable to watch it again rather than this half baked film.

When nothing else works .....
msunando19 February 2022
A young playschool teacher, Naina Jaiswal (Yami Gautam Dhar), returns prematurely from her sick leave to resume her responsibilities but soon afterwards, surprises everyone by taking 16 children hostage in the school. She demands for Rs. 5 crores, supercop Inspector Javed Khan (Atul Kulkarni) to be her point of contact for negotiations, and a meeting with the Prine Minister, Maya Rajguru (Dimple Kapadia). On the one hand, Naina is the affectionate and doting school teacher, and on the other, she is a gun toting, tough speaking terrorist who will stop at nothing to get her demands fulfilled.

Initially baffled by the sudden developments, police lunges into action and nabs every connection of Naina possible to make any headway and find a solution. But Naina won't relentl until she got a private meeting with the prime minister. The truth slowly starts unravelling about how Naina suffered from depression earlier, and that could possibly be the reason behind her irrational behaviour.

A Thursday isn't a remarkable story or execution but is quite a thought-provoking subject. It starts off with the hostage situation pretty early on, but then the proceedings start dragging, making the film run as if with the handbrake of a vehicle were kept on. The real motive of Naina's strange action takes a long time to be revealed by when most people would have gauged the reason. In spite of that, director Behzad Khambata doesn't fail to drive home an important point. The film has some intense acting by Yami Gautam Dhar, sound performances by Dimple Kapadia and Atul Kulkarni, and leaves ample scope for interpreting if Naina and Javed actually acted in partnership to give the act a successful conclusion. When pleas, requests, and demands for justice fall on deaf ears, it's perhaps time to take up the cudgel yourself.

Yami Gautam Starrer - 'A Thursday' Is An Intriguing Edgy Thriller That Will Keep You Hooked Till The Last !!!
cs_rahul_prasad17 February 2022
A Thursday - the new Hotstar Multiplex movie begins with Naina Jaiswal returning back to Lil Dots play-school from a 3-week sick leave. The kids' parents, the school's helper and the majority of the locality consider Naina as the perfect teacher who can control these little brats. The kids also love their Naina teacher. She plays with them, nurtures them, and show them their favourite cartoons. But as the kids start making noise, Naina shhh them with an evil gaze, and you get a hint that she has returned with ulterior motives.

Soon, Naina informs the police that she has abducted 16 kids in her playschool, and she has some demands. Pregnant ACP Catherine Alvarez (Neha Dhupia), cancels her doctor appointment and reaches the playschool. Catherine tries to speak to Naina, but the latter asks for Javed Khan (Atul Kulkarni) for further negotiations. As Javed comes into the crime scene, we are set for a thrilling ride. Naina sets up an interesting game where multiple lives are endangered. Naina initiates a series of demands with Javed, from 5 Crore ranson money to a conversation with the Prime Minister of India. Within no time, Naina creates havoc in the city.

What makes 'A Thursday' interesting is that the film quickly jumps into thriller mode. Within 10 minutes of the film, we get to see a sweet-loving Naina, turned into a cold-hearted, ruthless kidnapper. It's a no-nonsense thriller that keeps you interested till the end. As the film hits the interval, you will feel to get back quickly to see what will happen next. The film addresses a burning issue and the need-of-the-hour to eradicate it. But apart from that, it also takes a dig at the work ethics of media professionals. How social media craves negativity. How the netizens consider a 'game of death' entertaining.

There are a few moments in the film, where you be astonished and scared at the same time. Like at one instance, Naina asks the kids to form a circle and recite 'Twinkle Twinkle' with their eyes shut. As the innocent souls start singing, Naina records them in her phone with a gun pointing at them. In another nail-biting scene, Yami gets into a fight, and it is layered by the background score of a lullaby, that's another cinematic moment that will keep you hooked. Even the climactic twist will surprise you in a big way.

Talking about performances, Yami Gautam Dhar has stunned us with her act. Yami's pretty eyes echo chaos. She emotes pain, despair, anxiety, anger, hatred with sincere conviction. It's hard to believe that a beautiful face like Yami can be so ruthless, could shoot a child with zero regrets. This is the most challenging character for her, but the actress aced it with flying colours. Atul Kulkarni's role of inspector Javed Khan instantly connects with the audience, as he portrays it with utmost realism. His presence, his dialogue delivery, and the variety he showcased in his act make us realise his absence from the big screen.

Neha Dhupia deserves special mention as she played the role of ACP Cathrine with commendable sincerity and perfection. Neha was pregnant during the shoot, but she took this challenge to showcase her acting chops. The film is set during the monsoons, and Neha does some hardcore thrilling moments in the midst of rain. That's where you realise that she's a performer at par. Karanvir Sharma plays the role of Naina's fiance Karan Mirchandani. Even though he had a short stint, he gives it a praiseworthy performance. Last but not the least, Dimple Kapadia shines as the Prime Minister, Maya Rajguru. Dimple's character thinks from heart, and she feels for the lives of the children. Maya prefers emotions over protocols, and clearly mention not being a puppet.

Director Behzad Khambata has made sure to keep the film as crisp as possible. The film has no songs, it ditched melodrama, and although Naina's demands look unreal, her motive makes it believable. The background score of Kaizad Gherda goes in sync with thrilling moments, and it makes it more interesting.

A THURSDAY is a song-less film. Roshan Dalal and Kaizad Gherda's background score is one of the USPs of the film and contributes to the thrill factor very well. Anuja Rakesh Dhawan and Siddharth Vasani's cinematography is very good. Madhusudan N's production design is rich. Ayesha Khanna's costumes are realistic and non-glamourous, as per the demands of the script. The same goes for Vikram Dahiya's action. Sumeet Kotian's editing could have been tighter towards the beginning of the second half but overall, it's good.

On the whole, A THURSDAY springs a huge surprise. It is laced with a taut script, first-rate execution and the finest performance ever by Yami Gautam Dhar. It's a film that should have ideally come in cinemas. Had it been released on the big screen, especially in the Women's Day week, it would have emerged as the sleeper hit of the year, if not the sleeper super-hit. Highly Recommended!

A Daring Step For The Society And Nation By the Entire Film Crew. We Need More Like This!
burnwal-9754717 February 2022
Brilliant Acting from Yami Gautam, followed by Atul Kulkarni and Dimple Kapadia (The Legend). It's a bold step to let the society, nation and law-makers know not to just see and forget, but it's time to take it seriously. Capital Punishment is a big question, the delayed justice or no justice is something we need to reform with immediate effect and especially the juvenile thing has to end immediately.

This movie is good if we compared it with any Bollywood movies
Misss2522 February 2022
The movie is about a teacher who took 16 children(students) as her hostages for claiming her demands. Then she started making some demands which are quite impossible yet fulfilled.

The love the concept and the motive for which Yami did all these things. Though it's quite impossible in real life :)One thing that made me laugh is why do we need to put Neha as a pregnant lady? Was the director encourage by Money heist bold a** police officer? Neha's character was awful. Believe me, I never thought of watching Yami playing a negative character. But,when I watched it, I felt like she is made for this role. She has an innocent type face which helps to convince people that she is a good person and also her evil character is my out of imagination.

Great movie with a message to watch ! Best background music.
rrahulpanchaal17 February 2022
This is a superb masterpiece made by writer and Director. Actor Yami Gautam played the role on the next level. A great way to send a message to the parliament that this is the need of the hour. Too much best in this movie as cinematography, direction, acting, background music which keeps us stick to the seats. Yes there is some foul language but acceptable to this level of topic when portrayed. Parents were given very less screen time, A good movie to watch with a message specially to police officers.

jkt20062 March 2022
Watch it for brilliant performance by Yami and a well thought storyline and a thought provoking message. But don't miss it for Yami has done magic with her expressions, her eyes speak in so many scenes which is rare in Hindi movies. Reminds me of Akira Kurosawa class movies where the amazing actor could say it all without uttering a word in some scenes.

skmenon199317 February 2022
A well-made suspense movie...

A different experience acting of Yami Gautam been observed in this movie...

The screen play showed no amount of lagness and that what made more watchable

Superb star cast....

A message shown which is required for our law to open its eyes & ears

The movie shows "If a victim is not able to get the justice, then the victim will take law in their hands & execute the justice. So it's time for law to take action without any fear and biasness"

Clumsy premise, improbable story
suradasg21 February 2022
A petite woman with only a gun and 16 children, masterminding an elaborate hostage drama in an unsecured house is downright improbable. An elite commando force would take less than 30 seconds to neutralize the crisis. But the writer takes more than 90 excruciating minutes to elongate the crisis to drive home a point (which by the way is a pertinent issue of our times) but sadly the viewers lose interest by that time. If your basics are improbable, the total thing falls flat. 'A Wednesday' is a much better watch any day.

A brilliant thriller with its heart in the right place!
mayankshukla140418 February 2022
A Thursday is worth your time and attention. It's a socially relevant fast paced thriller.

Yami Gautam Dhar delivers a powerful performance and her best yet. Atul Kulkarni is brilliant as usual.

It's far better content than so much being offered in the name of entertainment. This one exceeds the expectations and how.

Highly Recommended!
