The feel-good elements outweigh the cliches and corny dialogues
nidhunmoviebuff28 May 2021
Kho Kho, the pathbreaking sports drama starring Kerala State Award winner for Best Actress, Rajisha Vijayan had a direct-to-TV release on Asianet today with OTT release on Amazon Prime and Saina Play yet to be announced (Released on 27th outside India on Simply South OTT).

Malayalam's first sports drama featuring an all-female sports team, Kho Kho follows the story of an enterprising young physical education teacher.

She tries to build a Kho Kho team in an ill-equipped government girls school, amidst an array of cultural, financial and disciplinary challenges.

While the core story is good and the handful of lead characters, instantly likeable, Kho Kho falter in trying to hit almost every sports movie cliche. Contrived and corny dialogues in many crux scenes reduce the impact they should have made on the viewer.

National Award-winning director Rahul Riji Nair has done really well in capturing the Kho Kho game sequences with authenticity and realism and Mamitha Baiju and Renjit Shekar are good in their supporting roles.

Rajisha Vijayan is wonderful in a more restrained, nuanced avatar than we are normally used to. Her character's tumultuous back-story adds many layers to the performance.

Ultimately, despite its flaws, the viewer can't help but root for this inspiring team of determined girls from Government Girls School Perunthuruthu. And ultimately, that is what makes a sports film watchable.

A good one-time watch. Recommended.

Bla Bla Movie
tkj-683026 June 2021
This is one of the worst sports movie i have watched till date, story line is very predictable and the actors lack any conviction, never ever can you connect with the characters and the lead actress was a poor coach choice, bland acting and way too cold expressions.. If you want to watch a female centric sports movie pls watch CHAK DE INDIA.

Kho Kho Movie Review: Rajisha Vijayan's Sports Drama Has Many Lovely Moments, But They're Outnumbered by Plot Cliches
shefali-5924414 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Director Rahul Riji Nair's fourth film is also his fourth to lead with unique female protagonists. In his first, Ottamuri Velicham, we got a moody portrait of a lonely woman stuck in a cold, loveless marriage in an even colder, lifeless terrain. In his second film Dakini, he married comic book quirkiness with the Ramayana, except that Ram here is a 70-year-old woman and her army of pensioners. In his most recent Kallanottam, shot entirely on Go Pro, we witness an intense tug-of-war between two groups of men, both vying to put a price on a woman's honour. Experimental and intriguing, these films introduce us to people we never thought we'll meet in the most peculiar situations.

You can become a story writer or director if......
People who have watched a lot of movies (atleast famous or hit movies in life) can easily get this.

  • A Protagonist who is doing an odd job without liking or for the sake of family
  • That protagonist could not have achieved the dream of their life
  • That protagonist was a sports player
  • They could not achieve because of the sports politics
  • Now they are getting an opportunity to train a sports team (either with their interest or without)
  • The protagonist will see this as a good opportunity to prove him/her
  • The team will be small, unknown or incompetent
  • He/She train the team. Players first won't respect them and then later realizes their mistake
  • The team will face the same politics Protagonist faced
  • Protagonist will achieve with the team. Expose the politics to public.

If you could able to connect all the above dots, then that's what this movie is. Just imagine Protagonist face as Rajisha that's all.

You can become a story writer or director if you connect all the above points and come up with a story line.

Corny clichéd storytelling and bad direction
wynwar25 June 2021
The amount of inspirational dialogues in the movie are exhausting. Corny clichéd storytelling. Rajisha is the only saving grace in the movie and the girls who are all 1st time actors I believe are also good. But nothing they did could save this badly scripted and directed movie. The quantity of music is also too much. Overall, it was a disappointing movie even though it had an inspirational theme.

A movie that every woman must watch!
janzrev19 April 2021
It's not often you see a movie that beautifully describes the journey of a woman. Maria's struggles are that of every woman in the society. The character's empowering spirit stays with you long after you have left the theatre. Every woman and the men in their lives must watch this movie.

A feel good sports drama that captures the essence of an indigenous team sport 'Kho Kho'.
ac_reviews19 April 2021
Very rarely do sports movies bring a physically intensive team game, Kho Kho in this case, which is less know to the common folks and mix it up with a women centered narrative and still manage to make us feel pumped, brimming with energy and leave us motivated. The movie is set mostly on a beautiful village and takes us through this amazing journey of relationships, passion and perseverance. It should be appreciated that the young players who acted in the movie are actual Kho Kho players and that you could see the passion and love they have for this sport. Rajisha Vijayan destroys stereotypes by playing a role that has been historically typecast for male artists. The young actor Mamitha gives a brilliant performance. The Film Maker, Rahul Riji Nair, having done National award winning movies like Kalla Nottam, has been successful in presenting his audience with an amazing sports drama and in showing us that its just another arrow in his quiver. The melodies are complemented with heart warming visuals, especially the scene where the Father waves back at his daughter when parting. This shows that sometimes you don't need dialogues in a scene to connect. Great Story telling. Overall a great movie!

I don't know about this spot
arulnachan22 August 2021
I'm not aware about this sport. Learned through this movie only. Predictable story line of course. Little boring in the middle. But I wouldn't say it's bad movie or bad direction. Normal family/motivation movie. I loved the lead actress, she is good.

A feel good sports movie
Jewel_M25 April 2021
A movie which is actually women centric unlike Chak De India or Bigil. Covers a realistic view with not much pomp and show. A movie which portrays a women's bossy part in the best way in the culmination unlike others. Except for the slight dramatization of dialogue and lesser sports shots despite being a sports movie, everything is in right proportion. As said in justice league 'a great attempt in the man's World'. To more of such alpha movies and the changing realm.
