Apep, Egyptian god of chaos and evil, made a much more sinister return in The Librarians Season 3 Episode 2, accompanied by werewolves and a less-than-chatty fellow Egyptian deity, Anubis.
"And the Fangs of Death" featured darkness prominently, both visually and tonally, as Flynn and the other Librarians entered a Canadian supercollider facility in search of a missing Charlene, who had apparently been kidnapped by Apep.
First off, I want to bring attention to the title of the episode. At first glance, "And the Fangs of Death" just sounds like the sort of melodramatic ridiculous adventure cliche that The Librarians normally exploits. However, it's actually more than that, as Anubis is the Egyptian god of death, and his army here was composed of werewolves, so it's actually appropriate!
Apep, despite his defeat at the climax of this episode, managed to provide a much more compelling villainous turn here than in his first appearance.

In the wake of Donald Trump’s victory on Tuesday, it’s been a challenge not to hide under the covers and never come out. When fundamental civil liberties, minority rights, and the safety of the entire planet are on the line, the diverting promises of everyday distractions are a mixed bag; the stakes are high, the situation is dire, and change depends on every single American who believes in justice for all to keep their eyes open and their voices loud on the task at hand. Action demands itself. Everything else can feel a bit frivolous right now.
But for those who need a quick bit of movie fantasy with a hearty, hopeful dose of relevance, I would recommend clicking over to Netflix like I did last night to refamiliarize yourself with the crackling Aardman claymation caper Chicken Run - a story about a henhouse uprising...

It’s been about half-a-year since we learned The Criterion Collection would be departing Hulu soon and bringing its entire streaming library to the new service FilmStruck, alongside films from Turner Classic Movies, Janus Films, Flicker Alley, Icarus, Kino, Milestone, Zeitgeist, Warners Bros. and more. Basically, it’s cinephile heaven, but on everyone’s mind is how much would this service-of-our-dreams cost?
Ahead of a launch on October 19, Turner has now revealed the subscription pricing plans, and thankfully it’s quite reasonable. The subscriptions are broken down into three options. First, for $6.99 a month, you get “a constantly refreshed library of hard to find & critically acclaimed films,” which we imagine will be the Mubi-style of a curated, more limited line-up featuring hand-picked selections from their entire library.
Then, for $10.99 a month, you get access to the entire The Criterion Channel, as well as exclusive bonus content, and “exclusive contemporary and previously unavailable films.

No two ways about it — what Jesse did in last week’s Preacher was bad. Like, real bad. (If you missed the pivotal hour, catch up here.) But the things he did in this week’s episode, since they were deliberate and just plain mean, were arguably even worse. What the hell did he do? Read on…

How does one write (critically) about ‘’a [truly interpersonal] reminiscence of a lifetime’’? Such was one of the questions I was posed to answer after experiencing Simulacrum Tremendum, by the Philippine filmmaker, poet and trained pianist Khavn de La Cruz. Marking Rotterdam Film Festival programmer Gertjan Zuilhof’s farewell, Khavn was granted the opportunity to screen and musically accompany his thirteen-hour long ‘’reminiscence,’’ as the director described it afterwards. And that’s what he did. Without a single break, Khavn live-scored the diary film he shot from 1994 to 2016. To make fragmented films is, in its essence, to make films democratically. Every glance or shot has the potential to find its exceptional viewer. Each one contains a possible moment of interpersonal glory. Why interpersonal, you might ask? Because at this particular one-time event, I was the only spectator who didn’t miss a second of the screening. So, interpersonal in the sense of...

Update: For a further dissection of the theory, check out my conversation with Roth Cornet here. When Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was released in 2008, critics and general moviegoers were sharply divided on the film, which finished with a 78% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes despite pulling an audience rating of only 54%. Perhaps the most reviled moment was the infamous scene where Indy survives a nuclear blast by hiding out in a lead-lined refrigerator, which went on to inspire the "Jump the Shark"-esque term "Nuke the Fridge." (Note: the scene in question was originally included in Frank Darabont's rejected-by-George-Lucas script for the sequel, but both Lucas and Spielberg have separately taken the blame for keeping it in the finished film.) And yet according to a very interesting new fan theory, the globe-jumping archaeologist may have been able to survive the unlikely scenario thanks to...

If the inaugural season of Marvel’s Jessica Jones was designed very much as an origins tale for Krysten Ritter’s titular private eye, could next year’s season 2 see Patsy Walker fulfilling her comic book arc and becoming Hellcat?
It’s a proposition actress Rachael Taylor has contemplated in the past, revealing that the dual role is something she’d “love to get my teeth stuck into whatever happens to the character.” Food for thought, then, though in a recent interview with Comic Book Resources, Taylor touched base on how her character fits into the grand scheme of things.
More News From The Web
Firstly, Taylor reflected on the core relationship between Trish and Jessica in the opening season, and why the former is perhaps a little frustrated that Ritter’s superhero doesn’t call upon her powers more often.

Yep, yep, yep, it’s called The Voice, and the voice should be the focus of our attention.
And yet, with 24 singers competing for only 12 slots in the Season 9 finals, shouldn’t a little salty hip action count for a few bonus points in a very close horse race (provided that said moving and grooving doesn’t throw a contestant off pitch)?

That was my thought tonight as Mark Hood, Zach Seabaugh and Nadjah Nicole attempted to do more than bake whole honeyed hams (musically speaking) while standing frozen at the mic stand.

In the wake of the horrifically awkward meal served up by this week’s Grey’s Anatomy, there was good news and bad news. The good: Mary Richards may no longer be considered the TV character who threw the worst parties. (Look it up, kids!) The bad: That dubious distinction might have been passed on to Amelia, Maggie and Meredith, who was damn near shattered by the prospect of breaking bread with Callie’s new girlfriend, Penny — you know, the doctor whose bad call cost Derek his life. (And here, Arizona thought that she was gonna need stiffer drinks to make it to dessert!

Not that Sharknado really needs a parody, but here's a faux movie trailer that pokes fun at the kitschy franchise – Mosquitonado.
Just in time for Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! on July 22, Tara Reid has teamed up with Terminix to spoof the Syfy series.
When asked which would be a scarier storm, a sharknado or a mosquitonado, Reid, 39, is torn.
"In a sharknado, you're getting limbs bit, you're gonna die. In a mosquitonado, you can handle it. So, I guess … a mosquitonado in a certain way because more likely in a sharknado, you're probably gonna die. In a mosquitonado you're gonna just really itch.

Quest Nutrition and Matthew Santoro will soon have lots of random food facts to teach you. The healthy snack brand and YouTube star have released the trailer for their upcoming web series Food for Thought, which is set to premiere on May 28, 2015.
In the trailer, Santoro, who boasts over 6.1 million subscribers on his own channel, explains how Food for Thought will cover “tasty, little-known facts” for all the foodies out there. The series will consist mostly of top ten lists, which Santoro is famous for making on his channel. Santoro gives some examples of the weird topics he’ll be discussing, like how chickens are descendants of dinosaurs and how Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (who just officiated a wedding for the Prank It Fwd web series) eats 820 pounds of cod every year. What would happen if you smashed together an indie comedy web series and an informative infographic? Food For Thought provides the answer. The new series, from Australian creative team The Pirone Brothers, combines bantering characters with clever nuggets of wisdom and informative statistics related to common topics.
The easiest way to explain Food For Thought is to discuss one of its episodes. In an installment about breakups, the characters Michael and Ruby eavesdrop on a couple that is on the verge of splitting up and offer their own thoughts about the proper way to go about the task. Food For Thought also makes liberal use of flashbacks to explore Michael and Ruby’s pasts. In the last section of the episode, the two eavesdroppers take a seat on a bench of their own and share some statistics about how different generations prefer to carry out their breakups.

Winners have been unveiled for the 2015 Final Draft Screenwriters' Choice Awards (basically voted on by anyone who — legally — owns Final Draft screenwriting software). "Birdman" and "Gone Girl" came out on top in the film categories, while "True Detective" and "The Big Bang Theory" were the TV winners. I know everyone is picking "The Grand Budapest Hotel" for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars, but I'm thinking we all might be snoozing on "Birdman" there. I'm not pointing to these awards as any indicator or anything, it just reminds me that if the film had been WGA-eligible, it obviously would have won. I mean, given its guild showing. Food for thought… Check out the Screenwriters' Choice Awards winners below, nominees here and more at The Circuit. As far as we can tell, anecdotally speaking at least, Lionsgate wasn't in a big hurry for critics to see Johnny Depp's "Mortdecai." In Montreal, the press screening earlier this week was quietly canceled, and advance showings in New York seemed hard to come by as well. But the movie has premiered overseas, and perhaps it's not a surprise that his movie is a complete stinker. The first reviews for the film have rolled it, and it looks like the only thing that critics can't agree on is just how bad the movie is. In a year filled with secret agent comedies—"Kingsman: The Secret Service" arrives next month, with Melissa McCarthy's "Spy" dropping in the summer—"Mortdecai" looks like it will be the most quickly forgotten. That moustache on Depp's upper lip? Maybe not much. And here's an interesting bit of trivia: Depp passed on Wes Anderson...

Peter Capaldi's Doctor has a bank heist to tackle in Time Heist. Here's our spoiler-filled review...

8.5 Time Heist
"Basically, it's the eyebrows"
For the first time in the current run of Doctor Who, Time Heist gives us an adventure where the Doctor is the lead character in it. The focus, to date, has seen Clara doing Doctor-y duties, frequently being the grown up who rolls her sleeves up and gets things sorted out. This time, though, Peter Capaldi gets a go. Turns out he's really quite good at it.
It's coupled with a slight re-hardening of his take on the Doctor too. There have been little thawings around the edge of his portrayal here and there over the past couple of weeks, as he continues to work out and get used to his new identity. Here, the character's a bit tougher,...

When we think of movie characters they are larger than life in human form. However, there is a tendency to connect a particular film or film’s mortal personality with something that registers beyond the piece of entertainment or the walking and talking characterizations. Louis C.K. hosted "Saturday Night Live" this past Saturday and of course -- not maybe -- it was hilarious. Here are his best four moments. 1. Opening Monologue Louis C.K. has a simple, casual way of delving into the core of what it means to be human. He provides a kind of makeup mirror -- the ones that magnify one's face to an uncomfortable degree -- that lets us examine what condition our condition is in. If we look and listen long enough, we can see most of our gross little hypocrisies laid bare. In his opening monologue, the comedian covers some serious ground: 2. "Office Boss" Physical comedy will never stop making people laugh when its done right. Beck Bennet does it right. The man has a stunning and beautiful propensity for becoming a baby. How much time did he spend alone, practicing his baby body moves in front of a mirror?...

When Tom (Iain De Caestecker) and Lucy (Alice Englert) decide to stay at a secluded hotel to celebrate their two week anniversary they find themselves on secluded country roads with only signs placed randomly around the route to take them to their destination. As the journey drags on though and they seem to be going in circles they soon work out that somebody is playing games with them and they are lost in a labyrinth of lonely roadways.
After watching In Fear you can get a feeling that there was very little plot to In Fear and in many ways this is exactly the point. Written almost on a daily basis the documentary behind the film shows that the writers were providing the actors with information and scripts on a daily basis. The aim of this...

It's Lord Grantham's birthday this week on "Downton Abbey" and Lady Rose, the resident party girl of the manor, has taken it upon herself to plan a party for him -- which means the return of cute bandleader Jack Ross (guest star Gary Carr).
Upstairs
The birthday party goes off without a hitch, though Rose's hiring of Jack Ross' band to play for the evening certainly raises a few eyebrows. Luckily, no one is as ugly as the time he danced with her at the jazz club, though Carson is pretty funny this episode. He reminds us of how sometimes old people think they're being really progressive, when in actuality they're still being a little racist. Baby steps, though.
Two attendees for the party bring another possible Lady Mary suitor to the forefront in the shape of one Mr. Charles Blake (guest star Julian Ovenden). Blake is there studying...

For the record, I enjoyed Doxx's well written article. I just totally disagree. And here's why. 1. Comic books are a very visual media. We are always looking right at the faces of the characters we read about. And when I get to finally see my beloved character on the big screen I want the character I've read about my whole life to actually look like the character. That doesn't make me racists, it makes me want an accurate portrayal. It means I have the power of sight. 2. Calling people racists for simply wanting an accurate portrayal is called ad hominem fallacy. Instead of hearing the other sides views, you simply attempt to discredit the other speaker by making an attempt to discredit the speaker to the audience. Because most people would agree, racists people suck. But it doesn't invalidate my argument. Food for thought: Is it sexists if I...

Last week, Nashville engaged viewers in a game of carrots and sticks – promising primetime character death on last night's mid-season finale. The show even got its own #WhoWillDie hashtag trending on Twitter. That question (or was it a pun?) is still relevant, as the final minutes of the episode extended that tease with two mutually exclusive potential killings in fade-to-black fashion.
22 'Nashville' Songs That Made the Show
First was psycho pregnancy-fabricator Peggy, who took an assassin's bullet, in front of Rayna, that was intended for Teddy (who, regrettably, escaped unscathed...

I can’t go anywhere without seeing an ad for Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” these days. Heck, I was in the bathroom in my house and … Okay, probably not there. But definitely whenever I turn on the TV, there it is, a hobbit trying to steal a dragon’s gold. I mean, dude, it’s a dragon. That can blow fire. You should probably not try to steal its gold. Food for thought. Anyhoo. Check out 11 new images from the Smaug-tastic “Desolation of Smaug”. Curiously enough, not a single look at Smaug. Go figure. (I guess it’s not so Smaug-tastic, after all…) Having survived the beginning of their unexpected journey, the Company continues East, encountering along the way the skin-changer Beorn and a swarm of giant Spiders in the treacherous forest of Mirkwood. After escaping capture by the dangerous Wood-elves, the Dwarves journey to Lake-town,...

Ruben Studdard returned to "The Biggest Loser" Tuesday (Nov. 19) after a controversial rule-breaking charge for Jillian Michaels and the White Team. But Michaels was only looking forward this week.
"Hit after hit after hit, week after week after week, I have to get these guys centered and focused. We've gotta step it up, we've gotta work a little bit harder, we've gotta focus on the bigger picture," says Michaels, because her team is down to only three members.
Meanwhile, the Red Team was celebrating Ruben's return and their first challenge win.
"For the first time, we've got this mentality that we're winners. One win is great but a second win is a streak and we wanna have a streak," says David. Rachel adds, "We're a big family and I don't want to see any one of us go home."

Has former "Bachelor" winner and "Bachelorette" star Emily Maynard found a non-"Bachelor-related man? That's the new report out of In Touch.
The magazine reports that Maynard has been seeing Tyler Johnson, a philanthropist based on Maynard's hometown of Charlotte, N.C.
"They've been dating for a while," says a source, telling the magazine that Emily is so concerned with keeping the relationship on the down low that she's told members of her church that he's her brother.
"[But] he's really her boyfriend. Emily's been trying to keep it a secret," the source adds.
Now, we used a little of our Google-fu to see if we could find you a picture of this new man of Emily's -- and we believe we succeeded with the above pictures from his LinkedIn and Twitter accounts.

This week on Showtime’s Homeland, Saul went hunting with some D.C. politicos — only to realize that he is the one in the crosshairs — while Carrie put her undercover mission in jeopardy for the shakiest of reasons.
Blind-sided | So here we are, our first hour into the season armed with full knowledge of what’s going on, and there still is some table setting to be done. Namely, Saul accepts an invitation to go hunting with the president’s chief of staff, thinking it’s the least he can do to court last-minute support before being named full-time director of the CIA.

Man City’s starting lineup against Bayern Munich in the Champions League last night was as follows; (4-4-2): Joe Hart, Micah Richards, Matija Nastasic, Vincent Kompany, Gael Clichy, Jesus Navas, Fernandinho, Yaya Toure, Samir Nasri, Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko.
After the final whistle, fingers were pointed at City manager Manuel Pellegrini for his tactics. In the first-half, his side were under the cosh on multiple occasions and the problems stemmed from midfield. It could be argued that Munich have benefited from Man City naming Aguero as a lone striker, and the extra man being put in midfield to either protect the back four, or as an extra option in attack.
Pellegrini opted against it, and the Citizens were annihilated as a result. Edin Dzeko was the strike-partner for Aguero, and was abject in the 55 minutes he played for. The Bosnia and Herzegovina international offered no...

An article attacking "interfering TV executives" has provoked a mixed response from comedy writers.
In the Guardian piece, writer John Warburton criticised comedy execs for their "destructive... interference" during production of his BBC Three comedy pilot The Inn Mates.
Watch a clip from The Inn Mates below:
Warburton argued that his original script was "youthed-up" and dumbed-down", adding: "The only great comedy shows of recent times are ones where execs haven't been allowed to meddle."
A number of comedy writers spoke out against Warburton's article on Twitter, including Peep Show and Fresh Meat co-creator Sam Bain.
This piece in @mediaguardian about a failed sitcom pilot - http://t.co/e0IViQAL8I - confirms every lazy negative stereotype about TV execs.
— Sam Bain (@sambaintv) July 1, 2013
Bain added: "It may be comforting for writers to believe that creatives = good & execs = bad, but most of the time if your show is s**t it's your fault.

At its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple announced upgrades to its OSes, Macbook Air, and Macbook Pro — and a direct competitor to your favorite internet radio station, Pandora.
iTunes Radio is coming this fall and will contain, at least, the following features: It will be available on all iOS 7 devices (that means it won’t be on your iPhone without an upgrade); it will include ads, unless you subscribe to iTunes Match; it can create custom stations built around a song or artist; it will allow you to buy the songs that you stream; and it will allow you to “thumbs-up” a track you like.

Rome, Berlin, misdirection, a duplicitous new Mossad director, "sweet cheeks" and a car crash. I'm not sure we could ask for much more from such an enticing NCIS episode as "Berlin."
The hour opened with Mossad agent Amir Mantel waiting for a contact in a parking garage. A car pulled up and someone he recognized rolled down the window and shot him. Abby later figured out that the communication earpiece he was wearing wasn't from the latest Mossad equipment, so Mantel could not have been working (or at least wasn't communicating) with Mossad at all, despite Mossad Director's assertion that he was, and that a member of a rogue faction from within Mossad had done the shooting.
At the end of the episode we still weren't sure what that was all about.
The Tony/Ziva tease brought us much closer to what so many were hoping to see, but not yet all the way.

Last year on this website I wrote an article listing what I thought were the best physically disabled characters in film. I wrote it right around the time the Paralympics were ending and I simply saw a trending topic and went with it.
Of course, I knew there was sensitivity to the subject matter, but I thought that at that time, more than ever before, there was a distinct lack of taboo around the subject. The article did generate some pretty lengthy comments after a few days and a point was raised that I had been completely oblivious to whilst writing; not one of my selection of great physically disabled movie characters had been played by a physically disabled actor.
As I’d compiled the list completely oblivious to this point I stand by that previous top ten. However this further highlights the question – why aren’t more great physically...
