London Australian Film Festival
Australia's brightest stars tend to get snapped up by Hollywood even quicker than ours, and there are plenty of potential defectors here, from the makers of recent hit Animal Kingdom to the handsome young cast of high school thriller Wasted On The Young. Not everyone is out to find the next Nicole Kidman or Hugh Jackman, mind you. The noble Aussie genre lineage continues with shark horror The Reef and Red Hill, a modern-day western with a smalltown sheriff under siege. Feelgood opener Red Dog, based on the true tale of an outback mutt, is one for the home crowd, while colourful "womance" Jucy closes the festival with its own offbeat groove.

The 9th annual Lausanne Underground Film Festival may just run for a mere five days in Switzerland on Oct. 20-24, but it hits with the force of a 10p-ton megaton bomb over that time period, packing in so much mind-boggling underground madness it’ll make your head explode.
Every year, the fest feels like 5 or 6 festivals crammed into one. There’s the fest that pays homage to the history of experimental filmmaking, there are the retrospectives of several cult festivals, a feature film competition section, a short film competition section and more.
Three filmmakers are especially getting major retrospective love this year. First, there’s legendary Canadian experimental filmmaker Michael Snow who will be in attendance at screenings of his classic films Wavelength, <–> and La région centrale, plus several of his other short films.
Also being feted are German extreme horror filmmaker Jörg Buttgereit, who will attend screenings of his classic Nekromantik,...

Short on budget, but long on style and quirk, writer/director/actor Park Bench’s literally biting Canadian horror/satire The Death Of Alice Blue (opening for a limited theatrical run today in Toronto, followed by an expansion across Canada) is a real find. It’s an arch, theatrical, funny and absolutely stunning-looking film, riding genres with gleeful abandon, playing with conventions and admirably cheating its limitations. And man, does it have a great central character…...

Where to even begin describing indie horror comedy The Death Of Alice Blue. I suppose you could say that it plays like the bastard love child of Arrested Development and Edward Scissorhands era Tim Burton. I'm not entirely sure that's true or fair but it will at least get you into the right neighborhood. A low budget affair that won some good love on the festival circuit, Alice Blue will be getting a theatrical release here in Canada in early August and you know what comes with releases? Trailers!
Something strange is going on behind the doors of Raven Advertising...
Ambitious new employee Alice Blue (Alex Appel) wants to impress roguishly handsome Creative Director Stephen (Kirsten Holden-Ried). To do it, she has set her sites on signing an elusive client, Nether Wines. However, the agency has other plans for her.

The teasing is over! This here is the real deal. The moment we wait all year for: The lineup for the powerful, the mighty Boston Underground Film Festival, which is set to run March 25 to April 1. Now in its 12th year, Buff shows no sign of slowing down or taking it easy. In fact, this might be their most demented and transgressive edition yet.
There are homages to Giallo horror, tributes to the grand grindhouse tradition of sleaze and exploitation, sex and violence galore — both separately and together — plus, a resurrected ’80s slasher classic that all combine into an epic celebration of everything that is vicious and twisted in this world. But, in a fun way, ya know.
Alas, I haven’t seen any of the feature films that are playing this year, so I can’t offer any special recommendations of those. Although, there are many (most) that I...

In case you somehow didn't get the message, vampires are hot right now. Extremely hot. Along with the already familiar titles Stake Land and Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl, this year's Afm is home to several other toothsome flicks that are giving their all to jump on The Twilight Saga's sparkly bandwagon.
Here's a sample courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter:
Blood: A Butcher's Tale, from Horizon Motion Pictures, trots out vampires as the romantic and physical rivals of the forlorn butcher of the title.
Toothin Theatre's The Death of Alice Blue puts a comely intern in the hands of an advertising company run by -- yep -- bloodsuckers (no surprise there).
Amadeus Pictures is hawking Vampiro, a Mexican-American/East L.A. take on vampire gangs and sexy vampira.
Where will it end? I don't think we'll find out anytime soon since, as THR says, "There's plenty for buyers [and fans of the subgenre] to sink their teeth into.

" 'Twilight' here! We got your red hot 'Twilight' angle heah!"
You can almost hear the refrain like there's a carnival barker stalking the halls of the Loews Hotel in Santa Monica. With "Twilight" fever regripping the nation -- Chapter 2, "New Moon," rises Nov. 20 -- many of the projects on display at Afm are spinning any "Twilight" connection they can find to hawk their wares.
London-based Protagonist Pictures is in the market with an erotic period drama, drawn from a Guy De Maupassant short story, titled "Bel Ami." It's a niche project with limited appeal from Redwave Films but for the fact that the lead character of a young Parisian playboy will be incarnated by Edward Cullen himself of "Twilight" fame, Robert Pattinson.
In other offerings, the content speaks for itself.

This film reminds me of something straight out of the 80's I can't quite place and it looks so damn good I want me a copy now! Billed as a dark comedy about a girl working in an ad agency staffed with vampires, the production design is gritty like the beginning of Joe vs. the Volcano and the music is fantastic. Written and directed by feature length first timer Park Bench (is that really his name?), the film stars Alex Appel and some other great looking talent. Really folks, you don't want to miss out on this one.
Something strange is going on behind the doors of Raven Advertising. It's Alice Blue's first day on the job and already she has set her sights on creating an impressive ad campaign for an important American wine company not to mention the agency's top creative director, Stephen. However the Agency has other plans for her.
