Claire Danes is reuniting with Homeland co-creator and showrunner Howard Gordon for the Netflix limited series The Beast in Me. Described as a mystery thriller, the limited series was created by Gabe Rotter (The X-Files) and has Gordon attached as showrunner and executive producer.
“Since the tragic death of her young son, acclaimed author Aggie Wiggs has receded from public life, unable to write, a ghost of her former self. But she finds an unlikely subject for a new book when the house next door is bought by Nile Sheldon, a famed and formidable real estate mogul who was once the prime suspect in his wife’s disappearance,” reads the Netflix synopsis. “At once horrified and fascinated by this man, Aggie finds herself compulsively hunting for the truth – chasing his demons while fleeing her own – in a game of cat and mouse that might turn deadly.”

Netflix has given the green light to The Beast In Me, a limited series headlined and executive produced by Claire Danes. In addition to Danes, the mystery thriller project, created, written and executive produced by Gabe Rotter, is executive produced by Jodie Foster, Conan O’Brien via Conaco and Homeland co-creator/executive producer Howard Gordon who will serve as showrunner, reuniting with the acclaimed series’ star/executive producer Danes. 20th Television is the studio; Gordon is no longer under a deal at Sony Pictures TV, which explains his involvement.
The surprising mix of big names attached to the series reflects its long, twisty path to the screen — indicative of how hard it often is to get a show made — which we will get into in a bit. The story may also inspire aspiring writers not to give up.

1705. England is a mess. Society is crooked. The rich stamp on the poor and nobody, from the gouty magistrates to Queen “Brandy Nan” Anne, is doing a damn thing about it. The people need a hero, and Happy Valley and Gentleman Jack’s Sally Wainwright has written them one in Nelly Jackson.
Played by Derry Girls’ Louisa Harland, Nell is a kickass 18th century action hero infused with supernatural strength by her spirit sidekick Billy Blind (a winged Nick Mohammed from Ted Lasso). Between those two, Nell’s younger sisters, a formerly enslaved servant, and a louche conman, they’re going to save the world. Or maybe just Tottenham.
Renegade Nell is an eight-part British historical adventure series. In a mirror universe, it might have aired in the Saturday teatime slot on BBC One in the Doctor Who, Robin Hood, Merlin and Atlantis vein, just made with more cash and more women,...

Exclusive: Fifth Season is selling more than $1B worth of Apple TV+ content including Jason Momoa-starrer See, Nicole Kidman’s Roar and M. Night Shyamalan’s Servant at the London TV Screenings.
Prentiss Fraser, Fifth Season’s president of TV distribution, said the move realizes the outfit’s long-term strategy of landing big streamer shows that can then be sold in their second window to smaller buyers.
She said there is “little crossover” between Apple TV+ subscribers and regular linear broadcast viewers in crucial territories, which highlights the opportunities for second window. The UK, for example, is estimated to have around 2 million Apple TV+ subs – just 3% of the population.

As Reece Shearsmith just announced, it’s the beginning of the end for Inside No. 9. Filming on the horror-comedy anthology’s ninth and final series began in late 2023, which means a wrap on one of the BBC’s most consistently entertaining and inventive shows is imminent.

Series nine is expected to air in spring 2024, and will add a final six episodes to the existing 49 stories in Shearsmith and co-creator Steve Pemberton’s back catalogue. Barring the first look image above, which shows Pemberton in drag at an underground train station (platform no. nine?), we don’t know anything about the stories, settings or characters yet, but we do know who’ll be joining the pair as guest stars… and it’s a deep bench.

Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios’ Orion Pictures has entered production on Hedda, its reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s famed 1891 stage play Hedda Gabler, announcing the addition of six to its cast. Newcomers include Imogen Poots (Baltimore), Tom Bateman (Thirteen Lives), Finbar Lynch (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan), Mirren Mack (The Witcher: Blood Origins), Jamael Westman (Hamilton), and Saffron Hocking (Top Boy).
The actors join an ensemble that also includes Tessa Thompson, Nina Hoss, and Nicholas Pinnock, as previously announced.
Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler revolves around Hedda Tesman, a newlywed stifled by societal norms. Frustrated and trapped, she resorts to manipulation and destructive actions. Exclusive: The Stranger Things stage show, an unbelievably brilliant new blueprint for theatricality that premieres in London’s West End tonight, will be the first installment in a trilogy exploring the dark underbelly of Hawkins, Indiana.
Breaking Baz can reveal that parts two and three are set to follow the inaugural play, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, in two- or three-year intervals, according to insiders associated with the production. The stage sequels will launch in London first.
Meanwhile, there are already plans for Stranger Things: The First Shadow to transfer to Broadway.
None of that’s official yet, of course. Producers and backers will study reviews out on Friday and across the weekend and the box office receipts before green-lighting any further productions.

In 2014 and 2015, Vertigo published Si Spencer’s eight-issue graphic novel Bodies, a mind-bending mystery about four police officers from different historical eras who discover the same corpse in the same London location, decades apart. Featuring detectives from the present day, the 1940s, the 1890s and 2053, it’s a complex conspiracy thriller about a very dark future. Originally illustrated by four artists – Dean Ormston, Phil Winslade, Meghan Hetrick and Tula Lotay – each era had its own distinct feel and look.
Spencer, who had also written on other Vertigo titles including Judge Dredd and Books of Magick: Life During Wartime, sadly passed away in February 2021, meaning he wasn’t able to see Paul Tomalin’s eight-part Netflix series adapted from his work. It’s out now, with a sprawling cast of characters including Boiling Point and This Is England’s Stephen Graham, several established actors and a handful of newcomers. Here’s more about them.

It’s Passenger 57 meets 24. Or perhaps just 24. Idris Elba stars in a new series from AppleTV+ called Hijack. The title pretty much cues you in on the concept. A group of terrorists takes over a seven-hour flight. What they want is not yet revealed, but they have allies on the ground that are helping to make their demands. However, something they didn’t count on is an experienced business negotiator already on the flight. This negotiator, portrayed by Elba, is preparing to deal with them…in more ways than one. The show takes during the events surrounding the seven-hour international flight and will be told in real-time.

Apple TV+ is quietly cornering the market on high-quality literary adaptations; the streamer may be best-known for original series like "Ted Lasso," but its adaptation game is surprisingly strong. From standouts like "Pachinko," "Foundation," and "Black Bird" to more polarizing offerings like "Lisey's Story," "Defending Jacob," and "The Essex Serpent," the streamer is constantly fine-tuning the art of the page-to-screen projects. The latest book adaptation from them is especially ambitious, and it's a risk that largely pays off. The 10-episode first season of "Silo," based on Hugh Howey's bestselling novel series, builds a somber yet thrilling world from the ground up — or, in the case of the titular structure, from the ground down.
"Silo" starts with a searingly great premise: a group of roughly 10,000 people is housed in an underground silo, at least 140 years removed from some sort of society-shaking event. Details about the silo's history are cloudy (for...

BAFTA gave out their Craft Awards on Sunday, 23 April. As with the Primetime Emmys, the British academy also devotes a weekend to celebrating the creative arts. The BAFTA TV Craft Awards are split into 20 categories, with six devoted to fictional programming, six to factual programming, and a further four in combined fields.
The BBC medical drama “This is Going to Hurt” won three awards — Editing (Fiction), Scripted Casting, and Writer (Drama) for show creator Adam Kay. Though it was designed to be the "zombie movie that never ends," "The Walking Dead" has finally concluded after eleven seasons, but never fear. The saga of your favorite crossbow-wielding, squirrel-eating character will continue in the new six-episode spin-off, "The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon."
Actor, motorcycle enthusiast, and all-around Boondock saint Norman Reedus — who has doubled as host of the AMC travel series "Ride with Norman Reedus" — will reprise his role as Daryl, so there's no need to worry about this being some kind of "Young Sheldon" or "Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" situation.
Like his older brother, the late Merle Dixon (Michael Rooker), Daryl is a character who never existed in the original "Walking Dead" comic book series, but he has been with the TV franchise since the very beginning. His first appearance was in a season 1 episode of "The Walking Dead" called "Tell It to the Frogs," and he's...

“If you want to make a TV drama about opium smokers, sadomasochists and imperial slavery in the 19th century, then write your own,” whines The Daily Mail‘s Peter Hitchens about Steven Knight’s new Great Expectations adaptation, presumably forgetting that in 2017, Knight did exactly that in 8-part Gothic Regency thriller Taboo.
Knight’s previous series starring Tom Hardy, bleeds into his take on Charles Dickens’ class and snobbery novel, which loses the comedy and grimes up the characters with the addition of adult content. Great Expectations returns to Knight’s constant theme of social mobility, moving away from ones roots, and the upper classes being mad, evil bastards, as explored in six series of Peaky Blinders.
Here’s the impressive cast amassed for this six-part drama.

Since the invention of the moving image – an event that happened just a few decades after the death of Charles Dickens – there have been at least 18 prominent adaptations of Great Expectations. That’s Pip upon Pip, Magwitch upon Magwitch, Miss Havisham upon Miss Havisham. Everyone, from Alec Guinness and Joan Hickson to Robert de Niro and Ralph Fiennes, has been sucked into the Dickens industrial complex. And now, for no discernible reason, BBC One viewers are being treated to a new adaptation of the novel, this time scripted by Peaky Blinders supremo Steven Knight.
The show follows the adventures of Pip, a bright young orphan (“an orchid growing wild in the filth of a stable”) who is thrust into the orbit of Miss Havisham (Olivia Colman) and her ward Estella (Chloe Lea/Shalom Brune-Franklin). From there, and via an encounter with a mysterious convict, Pip will fall in love, make his fortune,...

"Knock at the Cabin" is a tense film. M. Night Shyamalan's latest clocks in at a 100-minute runtime, and nearly every single one of those minutes arrives with the intention of holding our hearts in a vise grip of anxiety. Much of the movie's intensity comes from its cast, led by a phenomenal Dave Bautista, while the feature's thrills pull from a script based on Paul Tremblay's also-harrowing book.
But "Knock at the Cabin" succeeds as an apocalyptic psychological thriller thanks in large part to its filmmaking and design, including a knockout score by composer Herdís Stefánsdóttir. The musician has composed for projects like the Apple TV+ gothic series, "The Essex Serpent," and the short-lived graphic novel adaptation, "Y: The Last Man." "Knock at the Cabin," however, offered new opportunities for the composer to get creative. Stefánsdóttir spoke with /Film's Jack Giroux about what it was like working on the project,...

Digital U.K., the platform operator of Freeview and of its satellite twin Freesat, which provide free British television, has been renamed as Everyone TV, it was revealed at the 2023 Outside the Box conference in London on Thursday.
Everyone TV is backed by U.K. public service broadcasters (PSBs) BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. The name change comes with a revised mandate for the org – “to lead the evolution of free, universal, high-quality television, in a way that protects and strengthens the social glue provided by Britain’s broadcasting heritage.”
The conference reignited the ongoing debate in the U.K. that often pits the PSBs against the global streamers. Claire Danes has a lot to celebrate during her night at the Golden Globes on Tuesday, Jan. 10. The occasion marked her first public appearance since news broke on Jan. 9 that she and husband Hugh Dancy are expecting their third child. Danes, who's nominated at the ceremony for her role in FX's "Fleishman Is in Trouble," glowed in a sparkling white dress that showed her small baby bump as she posed on the carpet.
Danes and Dancy are parents to two children: Cyrus, 10, and Rowan, 4. The pair met back in 2006 on the set of the movie "Evening" and married three years later, in 2009. They live primarily in New York's West Village and are often spotted out and about with their family like average New Yorkers.
This year, Danes's Globes nomination marks the sixth time she's been nominated at the ceremony. She's won a staggering four times before: in 1995 for "My So-Called Life,...

As much as we love television, not everything makes the grade.
It can be difficult when a show we love betrays its characters for the sake of drama or when certain aspects feel phoned-in.
From awful characters, overly traumatic plotlines, terrible episodes, and more -- sometimes we have to call it as we see it.
The Orville: New Horizons Season 3 Episode 4 - "Gently Falling Rain" (Hulu)
Of the numerous problematic plot lines The Orville introduced, the Planetary Union's interactions with the Krill are the worst.
Specifically, Captain Mercer commits mass murder aboard a Krill ship, then unknowingly becomes emotionally and physically involved with a Krill spy, and then tops it off with some general war crimes.
As if that wasn't enough, the writers somehow thought adding a child to the mix was a good idea -- one born of Mercer and Teleya's relationship before she was revealed to be a Krill survivor of the Yakar.

Steve McQueen’s upcoming World War 2 feature “Blitz” has added six to its ensemble cast, Variety can reveal.
Benjamin Clementine (“Dune”), Leigh Gill (both pictured above), Mica Ricketts, Cj Beckford, Hayley Squires and Sally Messham are all set to appear in the Apple TV+ film.

Few details have been released for the Apple original film, which has already gone into production in the U.K. The title “Blitz” refers to the German bombardment of London during World War 2 and it has been confirmed the film will follow a variety of Londoners during 1940 and 1941 as they navigate a new normal. Measures introduced by the British government at the time to reduce fatalities included blackouts,...

Daisy Ridley will star in and executive produce the series adaptation of Nina de Gramont’s best-selling novel “The Christie Affair” for Miramax TV, which is set to develop and produce the murder mystery. The series is set to be a reimagining of Agatha Christie’s 11-day disappearance in 1926, which mirrored many elements of the mystery genre the late author was known for.
Ridley will play Nan O’Dea, the mistress of Christie’s husband, who the series will center on. Throughout the show, Nan discovers that her life becomes entwined with Christie’s in ways that neither could ever expect. Writer Juliette Towhidi is adapting the script for television; her previous credits include “Calendar Girls”, “Death Comes to Pemberley,” “Testament of Youth” and “The Essex Serpent.”

Miramax TV will develop and produce the murder mystery, with British writer Juliette Towhidi (“The Essex Serpent”) adapting the script. Tom Hiddleston was an up-and-coming English ginger kid when he auditioned for "Thor" in 2009. He had three things going for him: First, he'd previously worked with director and fellow Royal Academy of Dramatic Art graduate Kenneth Branagh on the UK series "Wallander." Second, he had an outstanding, well-practiced talent for acting. And third, his audition saw him take his shot at being Thor himself, with a desperation that smacked more of the character for which he's now best known.
Hiddleston is so skilled that it might seem improper to focus so much on his world-famous role as the trickster god Loki. Yet, no one cares for the sly god more than him — to which his "Loki" castmates can attest. Tom Hiddleston is more than a god, though. He's a theatre star with a 2020 Tony Award nomination for his role in "Betrayal." He's a romantic leading man on the level of...
