A murder in the woods
Tweekums30 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The CBI are called in when two girls go missing in remote woodland; Jane quickly realises the local police hadn't thought to look under the girls' car. When they do they discover the body of one of the girls. The police suspect that the two girls must have had an argument leading to the missing one killing her friend… when she turns up covered in blood, clutching a knife and claiming to remember nothing they are certain. Jane thinks otherwise and starts working to help her recover her memories.

This was another enjoyable episode; once again providing a perfect blend of mystery and humour. There are a few clichés; notably the local police who slow to discover the body, quick to blame the 'bad girl' and not too happy about another agency leading the investigation… especially some of Jane's actions. The ending also plays with clichés but this is in a fun, rather nodding way. While not overly grisly the flashback scenes where we learn what really happened are mildly disturbing. As always Simon Baker dominates as our protagonist but there are also fine performances from the rest of the cast.

The Missing Girls

Two teenage girls are missing, and CBI team is summoned to investigate the case. Soon Kara Palmer's body is found under her car in the woods and the search party seeks out Nicole Gilbert, who is the prime suspect of killing Kara. They find her but she is amnesic and do not recall the incident. While in the hospital, Patrick Jane uses his skill to force her to recall the killer.

"Redwood" is a great episode of "The Mentalist" with a tense screenplay. The plot is entwined with funny moments to relief the tension and works very well. My vote is eight.

California Beauty
darbski16 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
**SPOILERS** The beauty of California's woodlands is shown off quite well in this neat episode. despite the logic Patrick Jane brings to the initial search, the local sheriff just can't go along with his belief in the lovely Nicole Gilbert (Shelby Fenner). It is not the last time that the show features in background just how beautiful parts of California certainly are.

Naturally, Patrick works everybody's theories, and his own intuition to figure out just who did it. As always, his out-of-the-box reality is at odds with the established practices and rules. This, of course, is one of the reasons weirdos like me like this series. See it yourself. Available from Amazon.

A plot full of twists keeps you guessing until the end...
Doylenf1 February 2009
But don't ask me to explain the story. I came in on this one just shortly after it started and had a hard time following the heavy-handed plot as it unfolded. All I know is the suspense was terrific, the acting by SIMON BAKER and cast was excellent, and it had me glued to the end to see who the killer would turn out to be.

A girl's amnesia is a big part of the proceedings, but cleverly "The Mentalist" gets her to remember key points that her mind is blocking as she struggles to recover from a night of violence, forced to remember things from her hospital bed. Lots of the plotting seems a bit far fetched to be credible but, hey, this is a TV series. For instance, the girl equating the sound of rushing water with a Diesel engine.

Clever story is a bit too plot heavy for its own good, but keeps the viewer's interest due to the excellent performances and good direction.
