A Netflix adult animation that's actually good?
jordanoconnor-613323 August 2023
I started this expecting more unrelenting sex and dick jokes that Netflix's adult animation tv shows consist of, but what I got was something really refreshing.

The tv show has a genuine story, has its own humour, and you really don't know what's coming next from episode to episode. The humour isn't quite to the cackles I had watching the first part of inside job, but again the intriguing story really sets it apart as something that needs to be watched.

I don't really have anything else to say, just making up the rest of the word count, but definitely give it a go. Really hoping they don't decide to cancel it!

I enjoyed this show but it isn't for everyone
polivander28 July 2023
This show has a great animation style. The background characters actually have life to them. At the end of each episode you are left wondering what will happen next and how it will go down. Compared to most of schlock animated series that are Netflix, this one stands out as a unique one for me amognst some of the better ones. I can see why some wouldn't like this show due to how the protagonist is presented to be dry or some of the humor in it might not click with them. Overall, I was invested from start to finish with this Netflix animated series. I'd say give this a go and see if you like it.

More Seasons Please
ayonijaprithuvainya30 July 2023
Well I did not see this coming.

I can't really explain what it is. It is not laugh-out-loud funny. But it was a cathartic experience for me. If you are tired of the mind-numbing idiocy all around the world, and would want to have a beer with Dan Harmon and the ghost of George Carlin as they brutally mock them all, well, this show gets you partway there.

Bloody-handed Russian oligarchs, shameless oil sheikhs, clueless Scandinavians, insufferable middle-aged married couples that you hate on TV, none are safe.... from savage mockery.

I expect the average viewers will not be able to appreciate this. I hope Netflix knew that when they signed up for this show, and keep new seasons coming regardless.

Netflix please don't cancel this show!
pshwayethalegend30 July 2023
This show pleasantly surprised me thinking it was going to be another schlock fest animated series that Netflix is dishing out, but I was wrong. The animation style isn't bad, and the story kept me invested so it made me curious of what will happen in the next episode. Great pacing that leads to easy binge watching. The concept is original and not another copy and paste just for the sake of it. The animation style wasn't dry or lazy. If you appreciate absurd comedy shows like Venture Bros, Rick & Morty, Archer, and South Park, you'll dig this. For sensitive viewers, you'll not like the absurd humor. Just give this show a go and see if you like it.

Captain fall
sinahaase-960-74349731 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Spoilers..

The series is compelling enough but doesn't end well. If I'm gonna watch crime getting away with it itself every episode it better come to an end at some point of the series but sadly that doesn't happen here.

Captain Jonathan Fall is the latest "fall guy" that a corrupt group of criminals use while posing as a cruise company. Captain Fall is easy to use because he's a gullible, naive yet kind and trusting man (also always treated like crap by his family). The fake cruise line hire him and use him as their "fall guy" for their many, many illegal acts while on a large cruise ship. Although he is present for most of the crimes happening right in front of and often being used during most of it, he still has no clue that his "family" of the cruise coworkers and subordinates are actually framing him.

The premise for the show was pretty interesting most of the series until I realized it was about to end and the investigation part had barely begun. It ended on way too big of a cliff hanger for me for a show this small. So if you like more resolve then I'd advise to wait until season 2 if there is one. Also, I would've liked it more if there was less useless dirty naked ppl scenes so I give it a 6/10.

So very funny! Netflix: Please renew.
lee-966967 August 2023
I so enjoyed this series. Watched all 10 episodes in two binge sessions. Reminds me of Archer. Dark humor mixed with absurdist situations. I had no idea that the producers are also responsible for Norsemen one of my other comedy favorites.

The premise here: a global criminal enterprise headed by a James Bondian villain, Mr. Tyrant, is using a luxury cruise ship to carry out its nefarious objectives, e.g. Human trafficking to stock a human zoo; slaughter of tigers to make a powerful, dangerous ED treatment; kidnapping and body parts harvesting of albinos for good luck charms; a deal for a child-army to protect an illegal Chinese mining colony -- minerals for green EVs! -- in Africa.

To further this enterprise our villain has his people recruit the dumbest most gullible ship's captain on earth: Captain Fall. The good captain is surrounded by sociopaths, mercenaries, and plain old criminals, but he is oblivious to their schemes and his being framed.

Despite their bad behavior, the characters are likable / relatable in a strange, adult-cartoon sort of way. I am looking to know more about their backgrounds in what I hope is season 2. It's a great ensemble cast.

As for the plot, well, it's involved and veers this way and that. There is plenty of un-PC situations and funny stereotypes in each episode so that's a plus.

The dialog is filled with dry humor. Some of it reminds me of the banter from Norsemen. The characters often reveal themselves to be overly self-involved and unfocused on the task at hand. My fave: a short scene where two Norwegians who have escaped from a human zoo in the wilds of Africa debate about how and when, and what it should look like when they head in to a nearby city and return to civilization.

Now this series is not for everyone. Send the kids to bed, for sure. Lots of violence and sexual situations. The swingers club episode is particularly graphic and the dialog explicit, X-rated I suspect.

I watch very few adult cartoons so I am viewing this with a different lens than most reviewers here. But for me this was great fun. Kudos to Jon Iver Helgaker and Jonas Torgersen the producers / creators and Netflix for buying.

Unexpectedly...not bad
milatarshis31 July 2023
It started out rocky, had a vibe of an Archer wannabe be, closer to the infamous Velma. The amount of unnecessary violence is through the roof.

However, after 5-7 episodes it kind of grows on you. I enjoyed most of the characters having multidimensional personalities, which is kind of rare at Netflix.

Also the plot is pretty fresh and creative, and absurd enough to be fun.

Animation is nice, nothing special but not bad.

I like that a lot of characters have their own accents, or speak different languages. Voice actors did a good job as well.

I'm looking forward to see where it will get in the second season.

Very well thought out satire that's very under appreciated.
jenkenton5 August 2023
I get that people were expecting a more Simpsons and Family Guy type comedy adult animation, but this show isn't that kind of comedy, which is good. Though the humor is there, Captain Fall relies more on storytelling, situational humor, and character analysis than other shows.

Jonathan Fall unwittingly operating a smuggling ship masquerading as a cruise line while slowly growing confidence while realizing something isn't right. The cutthroat smugglers who are his crew becoming introspective in their actions while feeling sorry for their captain. Those dynamics and narrations make the show good.

Don't miss the point
jared60341 August 2023
This is something I haven't seen before. Not that I can think of, anyway. At first I thought it would be like Archer. But it's much darker. It's such a complete juxtaposition. Silly on one hand and on the other hand, uncomfortably dark. I could see people being offended by the way the subject matter is treated. But it's not all for superficial laughs. There is a very sinister undertone. I found myself laughing at the buffoon looking through the wrong end of the binoculars in an episode about child soldiers. Includes many tonal shifts and many levels. It's absurd and serious at the same time. People saying this is just normal comedy that they've seen before must be watching it while they're ironing. It's a show that says "Look how silly this guy is. He doesn't even realize that he's being used to murder multiple people (on screen) and kidnap people to be used as sex slaves. Haha isn't that funny?" Isn't it?

Soemthing you'd watch when you have nothing else
abhirambhat28 July 2023
"Captain Fall" charts a course with potential but falls short of expectations. The show introduces Captain Jack Fall, reminiscent of "American Dad's" Jeff, but lacking the same magnetic personality. Initially, the series promises an intriguing pirate adventure, but it quickly succumbs to a repetitive plot structure, lacking captivating storylines and character development. While the show manages to keep viewers engaged in the short term, it faces the crucial decision of breaking free from the formulaic narrative to revitalize itself and stand out among the plethora of adult animations available. Ultimately, the fate of "Captain Fall" hinges on its ability to navigate uncharted waters and breathe life into this otherwise mediocre series.

Netflix pushes the boundaries of animation!
PeteWade7 August 2023
Once pitched as a live-action show, the series transformed into an animated trailblazer that is edgy, raunchy, and irreverent. Follow along as the lovable loser Captain Jonathan Fall (Jason Ritter) becomes unknowingly mixed up in the dangerous world of black-market peddling aboard the Caribbean Queen. The Naval Academy flunky is recruited by an international cartel as Ritter captures the innocence of this bumbling idiot stupendously. He's as effortless at slapstick humor as his legendary father was on Three's Company. And his brother Tanner (Adam DeVine) is just as inappropriate as DeVine's lovable Modern Family character Andy Bailey was innocent. In fact, this contrast seems rather metaphorical as this boundary pushing series converts a number of actors known for righteous roles into twisted deviants with no holds barred.

Cedric Yarbrough was hilarious in The Goldbergs and Speechless, and his golden voice lends credence to the bravado of the show's arrogant officer Chief O'Neil. The half-hour installments feature hilarity, from the dysfunctional Fall family members to the oddballs who come and go.

The characters of whom I'm most fond are the villainous antagonists, from the sensual Liza, played by South African Lesley-Ann Brandt of Lucifer, to Pedro whose smoky Latin voice is perfectly delivered by Mexican native Alejandro Edda. You'll even hear the familiar voices of Bebe Neuwirth (Cheers) and David Schwimmer (Friends). Fans of grown-up content conveyed through animation will love this show!

Reconsidering Viewer Suitability for this Shocking Show
jochie199911 August 2023
I recently watched the show and I must express my utter disbelief in the rating it has received on Netflix as suitable for 12+. This marks my very first attempt at writing a review, and the reason behind it is simple: I am utterly appalled.

The content presented in the show feels far more suited for a mature audience, at the very least 16+. The themes and situations tackled are undeniably adult and intricate. It boggles my mind that a thirteen-year-old child would be exposed to such content. In my opinion, this is an issue that demands immediate attention, as the current classification is nothing short of inappropriate.

80's action thriller meets absurdist humor and basic animation
CinePhantom28 July 2023
Jonathan Fall - the youngest member of an accomplished naval family, but not the brightest lighthouse on the coast - gets hired by a mysterious crime organisation to captain a cruise ship, which serves as a cover for various nefarious acitivities. Kind, naive, and completely ignorant of what is going on around him, Jonathan is the ideal fall guy, should something happen. This is the rather elaborate premise for an animated series filled with a simply stupendous amount of gore, a staggering body count, and other sorts of normally R-rated material. And it is exactly these elements that prevent the show from being more than just mildly entertaining. The frequent cruelty feels mostly unnecessary and pointless, its sole raison d'etre being to shock its viewers. The semi-explicit sex suffers from the same problem. "But what about the story, the characters, and the jokes?", you may ask. Well, the former is actually quite intriguing and filled with cool ideas and sub-plots. The characters, however, are unlikeable throughout, clichéd, and not very interesting either. The humor often revolves around violence and is absurdist in style, similar to Futurama or The Simpsons. In contrast to those two series, though, Captain Fall is neither particularly witty nor in any way insightful. The animation is simple but satisfying, the voice-acting does the job, but not more than that. The overall result is reminiscent of an 80's low-budget action thriller. However, it really lacks in emotional depth, and while I was watching it, I was actually wishing for something less heartless.

Screw the critics
saikumardasari26 November 2023
The adverse impact of critical reviews on shows featuring simpler and darker comedy is noteworthy. The critiques directed at this particular show fail to accurately reflect its merits. With its dark wit and occasional complexity, coupled with a strong cast and an engaging storyline, the show provides a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The main character, Captain Fall, masterfully combines darkness and humor, eliciting laughter even in somber situations. For adults who appreciate dark humor intertwined with elements of violence and comedy, the show holds significant appeal. Regrettably, due to the repercussions of these reviews and a decline in viewership, the second season has been cancelled. It is disheartening to witness the premature termination of promising shows of this nature.

Please Renew and Never End Highly Enjoyable
darcypphillips4 October 2023
This is an example of a great adult animated tv series which doesn't overstay its welcome in any of the episodes and the season of 10 episodes is perfect for a show like this... there is so much room to explore multiple more seasons and in many ways I hope this is the next long lasting animated tv show.

Not only are the characters well developed and relationships don't appear forced but the arks of each of the characters is intriguing and none of the individual plot points seem shoe horned into the series.

The over arching plot line is also consistent within the first season and is set up to continue hopefully into the many seasons to come... whilst each episode has its own 'subplot' which has significance to the character development or main plot line.

Unequivocally, it is a tv series I would recommend everyone to give it a watch and it definitely deserves more love then it had received (due to the lack lustre marketing)...

PLEASE RENEW

P. S. for at least an additional 2 more seasons...

Up and down.
lynxjsa-645843 August 2023
Lots of dark humor and over the top violence to keep me amused. The main character is just a smackable sap, but he grows on you. Liza is a great evil henchman/coordinator, and had I not seen the credits I would have never figured out who is doing the voice.

Tanner is, like its voice actor, just gross and totally unlikeable. For example, there's nothing funny about a boss leaning over his female subordinate and bragging about how he penetrated a woman last night.

As for the story, I like the way they use tales that initially seem unrelated, but then link directly back to the main plot line. If you liked Archer, you'll probably like this, too.

Absolutely Banging Satire. All The Puns Are Hitting Hard.
t-d-t-m823 August 2023
Excellent show. Like Archer meets Monty Python meets Narcos. Superb dry humour. Acting is very good. Lots of dialogue.

Episodes are pushing the boundaries of Netflix comedy. It's not for the family or for kids but it is especially good for young adults and people with dry and dark humour.

It's fabulously-written and every episode has fresh flavours of comedic genius. The deliveries are fabulous. I even love the foreign drawl which Lesley-Ann Brandt uses to ascertain her incredible mystique. Is it possible to fall-in-love with a cartoon character? We'll she's that amazing.

Special shout-out to Christopher Meloni aka Agent Steel. The agent which doesn't take no for an answer and is diligent to his duties when others are not. He reminds me of myself.

Also Adam Devine absolutely nails the classic clossetted school boy recluse turned man-of-the-hour; Captain Fall. It's a great performance. It's hard to deliver so much woeful ineptness and such staggeringly low-confidence. Yet he's pulled it off remarkably.

I can't remember the last time I laughed so much during a cartoon show. It's really put the humour back into cartoons. I love the show. It's underrated as it's not for everyone and I'm sure people are against the violence and the absurd scripts such as the swingers' episode.

However I absolutely loved it. Netflix has been getting a bit stale recently and complacent as so many of my favourite shows have been cancelled. This is just what it needs. Absolutely banging stuff.

May be missing the point.
charanjs-2310 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Enjoyed the first 8 episodes so far but at some point, I hope the Captain unknowingly and in his own innocent way, stops the crime from happening on the ship ! Otherwise what's the point !?

The Captain is Gullible and a lot is happening under his nose at his expense, so the message so far is, the bad people can get away with doing whatever they want. Will the Captain get lucky with stopping these heinous crimes unknowingly remains to be seen.

Other than that, I really enjoy the humour, the dialogues and the screenplay. Cannot wait for the next season to be released. This show has a lot of potential, I hope it lives up to it.

Archer, but they are the bad guys, well most of them.
fsos-523221 August 2023
The main character and name of the show act as a decoy to the otherwise fantastic and comical cast of a cruise ship criminal empire vs a determined detective. A whacky, yet dark and goofy animated series. I was pleasantly surprised and glad I stuck with this series. Almost a polar opposite of Archer, the lead role whilst pivotal plays a more minor role in the story telling, the episodes do well to bring the story arcs into place and leave the viewer wanting more. Hopefully Netflix goes and gets more series as there really is a lack of decent animation comedies albeit a bit neice' in its audience.

Writers are Failing Animators
figmar31 July 2023
I am not sure how this got greenlit. It's not even slightly funny or entertaining. If you want some noise on in the background while you do other things, this would be ideal. There's no compelling story to pay attention to. The voice acting is pretty basic with no real stellar performances. I think that's generally because the writing doesn't require it. The writing is absolutely basic but tries to be edgy and cool by throwing in a lot of raunchy scenarios and dialogue. It's really just a boring time waster. Again, decent for background noise or for something to fall asleep to. If you pay attention to it, you'll be out like a light within minutes. Three stars as it's good for background noise or a sleep inducing effect.

Amazingly original and entertaining
Haribo568 August 2023
Recently I feel like a lot of the animated shows (Especially on Netflix) are just somewhat unoriginal or just boring. And I thought this would not be different, however I was gladly mistaken. Captain fall excels at having an engaging storyline and fun characters. Which I am surprised about as from the first episode I thought that fall looked like a boring uninspired character, however as the show progressed I began to like him more and more. Unlike in other animated TV shows like 'Farzar' where I just hated the protagonist more and more. As for the tone and theme it's awesome and feels like Archer, which is one of my all time favourites. It's also worth mentioning that it is not super funny considering it's a comedy however that does not matter as the story is engaging enough. And it did have a couple of laugh out loud moments. All in all it's a great show and I highly recommend watching it.

Unpleasant
MoziSzerdanPapucsban29 July 2023
I watched one (1) + two half episodes (7,12).

A show with a great animation style but awful humor. The gist of it is that the main character is a loser, and his family is awful to him. They do not love him deep down, they are just awful through and through.

Not sure why people would like the "humor" either. Main protagonists brother is a sex fiend, but in a way that is not charming or funny at all, he just says and does inappropriate things all the time. I have no problem with adult comedy, I liked Family Guy, but I did not find anything funny in this. It is often said that comedy is about the perversion of expectations, but I can't recall a single twist that was unexpected, jokes are telegraphed from miles away.

pretty dang good
drsnubbs29 July 2023
Finally, an adult animated show that doesn't rely on constant gross-out, shock jock, and in-your-face humor. This show really nails the sweet spot of being subtly and tonally funny while also not being so dry that you forget it's a comedy at heart. Plus the character designs are really pleasing, and the show has an overall aesthetic that's gripping and cohesive and unlike most other adult animated shows of the modern day. It's not anything crazy or abstract like Midnight Gospel, but it stands in its own lane and carves out a niche for itself instead of just copying Family Guy. Characters are funny but empathetic and not exaggerated hyperboles that scream every other line for comedic effect. Really hope this gets more episodes, cuz I'd watch em immediately.

Netflix Did It Again
ShadowsBeneathTheLight17 August 2023
Netflix originals are hit or miss, very hit miss and these days usually on the miss. But this time Netflix has a seriously good hit that most people seem to agree on. Captain Fall is hilarious. From the premise to the characters to the very dark adult humor, it all just works. It is ridiculous, it is crude, but it is so dang funny. The writing is actually clever, and I dont mean like Big Bang theory let's make a math joke clever but clever in the sense that the schemes this criminal trafficking enterprise gets more ridiculous with each passing episode. And yet it works.

Is this show for everyone? No. But if you liked Archer or Pacific Heat and other animated shows in that venue, then check this out.

Quirky and unconventional adult cartoon
hubertkrajewski3 August 2023
Great show to take your mind out of other things. I began to feel interested in the middle of 2nd episode. Pilot was kinda boring but it settled action perfectly. Viewer gets to know characters and their traits fairly early and it goes from there. Scenes are predictable in a sense but at the end it surprises you. Show has its funny moments and characters are likable, especially board trio Liza (my favorite), Pedro and Nico. Their dialogues as well as other crew members are pure comedy. I loved watching crew's chemistry and how they were all fooling Captain Fall. The cruise ship takes watcher all around the world and shows different comedy possibilities. Show is sometimes quirky, uncomfortable to watch (which isn't a bad thing, it isn't just like any other adult cartoon) with a huge drop of dark humor. Overall I would rate it 9.5/10 and recommend to at least give it a shot till 3/4 episode, it'll be worth it ;)
