Flawed but warm and genuine romance
necktienick14 July 2021
There are a lot of coincidences in the screenplay, and one character is absolutely terribly written. But with a stead hand behind the direction, believable and well written characters and gorgeous art to top it all off, this film is a treat that is very much deserving of your time.

Excellent movie.

The execution of all the emotions was perfect and it reached my heart. And studio Bones did an excellent job with animating the film. The animation quality was on par with "Your Name". Overall a very nice romance movie. Loved it🌸🌸

NO WORDS. THIS FILM WAS PERFECTION🙌

Warning: Spoilers
Josee the tiger and the fish was such an amazing film! It really got deep and emotional towards the end especially when Josee and "the servant" felt a deep connection.. There is just so much to this film that really hits the spot. It highlights the importance of working hard to achieve your dreams and not letting anything get in the way of that. We need friends and family to support us and give us that little push we need to achieve our dreams! The movie was a great length and not rushed whatsoever! Absolutely recommend, 11/10.

Next to a masterpiece
aariff-3520521 June 2021
Warm hearted, perfectly executed movie. To be honest really the plot isn't complicated, supernatural or science fictional. Just a simple romance story of a boy and a handicapped girl. Yet it's superbly executed! And the animation is like icing on the cake, the soundtrack is also great,i was hesitating at first that it might be another heart breaking, emotional movie but to my surprise the ending was really great and every minute is worth it. With no offense and no comparison to other anime films it's an amazing movie in itself.

Josee, the Tiger and the Fish:Poignant but misses the mark
Platypuschow28 December 2023
Plot

Tsuneo is a university student and Josee is a young girl who has rarely gone out of the house by herself due to her being unable to walk. The two meet when Tsuneo finds Josee's grandmother taking her out for a evening walk.

Cast

Not seen anything else by the creators.

Verdict

I'm that guy who wants to like anime, who really wants to be an anime fan but seems to consistently struggle whether it be movie or television show. You see I don't like the cutesy stuff, I don't like the Naruto/Dragonball over the top stuff and that seems to make up far too high a percentage. When it's come to shows I've enjoyed the likes of Death Note, Attack on Titan, Sword Art Online etc and most of the Studio Ghibli stuff however many comparable movies haven't won me over to the same extent.

After Your Name (2016) I went in assuming the worst and something in the same vein. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed Your Name but didn't get the critical acclaim.

Josee, the Tiger and the Fish is a quaint, sweet, thought provoking poignant tale that I very much appreciated however the execution I found lacking. How? I'm not entirely sure. It should have been an emotional tour de force, yet I found myself oddly unimpacted. The writing wasn't to the standard I expected and Josee's resentment and attitude I respect but thought it waned too slowly and for this reason I didn't empathize as much as I expected nor wanted.

I respect the film and what they were trying to do but for me it just missed the mark.

Rants

It does pain me that I don't like anime as much as I'd like. I've watched plenty of films, countless shows and my enjoyment tends to lack. Don't get me wrong Ghibli stuff is great but beyond that I struggle especially with shows. I've been recommended countless from Hitman Reborn! To Magical Girl Site and Highschool of the Dead! If you have any recommendations by all means contact me via the details on my profile.

Breakdown

Deep meaningful stuff Great premise Character likability suffers Something is simply missing.

Great Visuals but Josee is so annoying that made me root for the other girl to be together with Tsuneo at the end of the film.

Cliche yet absolutely heartwarming nonetheless
MovieWarfare23 January 2022
This movie can be incredibly cliche and sappy while also using a lot of the tropes expected from romance stories.

However, I still came out completely in love with it. There is a sense of heart and soul in every scene, every music score and every performance from both Japanese and the English dubbed. It's just a wonderfully made film that is just beautiful to look at with its amazing animation and character.

While romance is a core element of the film, there is also a wonderful message about allowing yourself to be able to pursue what you want without being shackled by your own situation.

It's a sweet and heart-warming film that you will no doubt enjoy.

Haven't I seen this before?
briancham19943 March 2022
A potentially sweet drama about disabled lives and dreams devolves into clichéd teenage melodrama with the obligatory love triangles and cheesy dialogue. I swear I've seen this before. It starts out like The Intouchables (without the class divide) and ends up like... well, half the anime I've seen (not sure why I subject myself to that). At least the animation was gorgeous and the characters were expressive.

I regret to not watch it on Cinemas.
Mysterygeneration23 August 2022
As you may have seen in the synopsis, Josee meets Tsuneo by coincidence, and she decides that despite her limitations, she wants to travel. If you watched the clip earlier, you already know that they both snuck away while her grandma napped and explored a part of the globe Josee had never seen before or had not seen in a very long time. She was exposed to more of the outside world at those times, which she found to be both exciting and terrifying.

I won't go into too much detail because I've been looking forward to this movie and I know I'll love it. People clapped at the film's conclusion in the theaters where I was viewing it, so I think it was entertaining enough even if you didn't know anything about the story beforehand.

Avoid like the plague
RebelPanda23 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I consider myself a very patient person. It takes a lot to get under my skin. Even when I watch bad anime, I still enjoy riffing on the flaws.

Josee, the Tiger and the Fish managed to irritate me. Trying to finish it was like waiting at the end of a school day, watching the clock tick tick tick... I constantly paused to take in the frustrating decisions the characters made, then brace myself for more melodrama. The protagonist, Tsuneo, is a lot like me. Maybe that's why I had such a strong reaction to it. We're both 22-year-old guys planning to study abroad, working a part-time job to save money. Except, he's much more patient and resilient to psychological abuse than I am.

His tormenter is named Josee. A slightly older woman with a disability that prevents her from walking. You might assume from the art that she is a pleasant person. That is so far from the truth. Tsuneo and Josee met by coincidence-someone pushed her down a hill. Luckily Tsuneo caught her moments before she hit the pavement. Instead of graciously thanking him for saving her life, she accuses him of being a pervert for groping her. He did not. Their wacky facial expressions imply this false sexual assault accusation was meant as a joke-that's the kind of tone-deaf humor we're dealing with here. Their relationship proceeds as follows: Tsuneo wastes his time and energy to ensure her happiness and livelihood while she begrudgingly puts up with him. A series of contrived unfortunate events befall Josee throughout the film. That's what forces him to stay by her side and help. After saving her from nearly dying, Josee's grandmother invites him in for dinner. For some reason, everyone ignores the sexual assault thing. Her grandmother continues inviting him over to assist with chores for payment. While writing a thesis, applying to school abroad, and a part-time job, he chooses to keep working for this bizarre family for a bit of cash. Josee calls him her "Servant" but she treats him like that too, and this is supposed to be cute? Why the hell does he put up with her awful personality? Josee and Tsuneo's dreams merge in Kon-esque psychedelic montages, among other unanswered questions. Cool, but why?

Nothing about the art style stood out aside from the dream sequences. At least the animation is fine, but the background art is pretty bad for a Bones production. I appreciate that they animated everyone with 2D rather than CGI, the complex movements of crowds and designs of each one take time and commitment to a seamless experience. The compositing was quite good too. Characters blended with the background well because of the soft line art and lighting filters.

I love stories about awful people. One of my favorite anime is Monster (2004). The antagonist Johan Libert is a devilish serial killer. The difference between Johan and Josee is that we understand why he murders people because he's well written. We're assured his actions are morally reprehensible because the protagonist recognizes his unwavering cruelty. Whereas Josee to Tora wants us to believe she is completely justified and we should root for her success. Tsuneo returns to her, not even for the money, to be tormented. His autonomy, dreams, and self-respect vanish into thin air at Josee's will. Josee blackmails Tsuneo by saying she'd accuse him of sexual assault again, and he's forced to oblige. Do human beings do this? Unlikely, but not impossible. Do human beings fall in love with blackmailers? I hope not, but evidently, this dude does. I regret to inform you this is a "love" story. Is Tsuneo a masochist? Likely. Is he desensitized to abuse? Very likely. The most frustrating thing about him is that he's too one-dimensional to loathe him. There's nothing to him that explains his self-destructive choices. His closest friend is only interested in chasing women rather than worrying about this man's descent into madness. The side cast is equally inconsequential, and the character designs are not unique at all. Other torture porn movies go through great effort to acknowledge the misery-he just suffers emotionlessly.

Josee takes advantage of Tsuneo's kindness (or stupidity) by guilt-tripping him. When she's feeling sad that he's gone, she avoids him until he runs back like a dog-sometimes returning with an apology gift as though he did something wrong. Tsuneo simply speaking to a female friend makes Josee bitter and jealous, despite still treating him like dirt beneath her wheels. Rather than talking things through, she manipulates him into staying with her. One unfortunate coincidence after another forces them together... And now it's a romance. The movie repurposes old cliches-sudden death, freak accidents, and rapid mood swings for a quick burst of melodrama. One or two contrivances are easy to overlook. The ENTIRE story is made of contrived situations.

Despite being the most rational voice in the movie, Tsuneo's female friend (the one Josee hates) the film treats her as rude and unsympathetic. Firstly, she treats him like her equal, respects his space, and is open about her feelings. She is not flawless; however, she always attempts to speak rationally by asking Josee to treat Tsuneo with dignity. Suddenly, she drops degrading comments that make her attempts seem artificial and misguided. The script implicitly validates Josee's disdain for the woman. A well-written character doesn't randomly alter their personality like her. It is a pattern of contradictions used to absolve Josee of her rude behavior. Josee herself is not a very likable character unless you love kawaii cliches and hate yourself. There are a few pros to her: The screenwriters illustrate ableism in a way that's not condescending. A businessman bumps into her wheelchair and blames her for getting in the way because of her condition. It evokes an intense reaction without preaching. Portraying people with disabilities is often a problem anime have-see Komi-san Can't Communicate. Since the film is based on a live-action movie from 2003, I'm assuming the themes were forward for the time. Nowadays, they could've done a lot more to realistically convey life for someone with a disability.

Josee, the Tiger and the Fish (2003) had a different ending than the animated version. I doubt it could've been any worse than the overly idealistic way this insidious crap wrapped up. Imagine a train full of cow manure derailing into a burning pit full of used needles-it was worse. Many of us know what it is like to be manipulated. Watching it romanticized disgusted me. A tragic event portrayed through rose-tinted glasses. I understand these characters are just lines on a screen, but they are lines I despised. If you found something to love here, as so many people seemed to, I'm happy for you. If this sounds like something you'd hate, avoid it. Please, God, avoid it.

Heard of this movie from a friend who recommended it. It holds up well in comparison to other recent great animation films such as "Your Name" and "Silent Voice". It is unique and tells a story on its own values and lessons. Live, Love, Dream. I recommend it too if you like films of the same genre.

This is a beautiful Anime...
paul_haakonsen29 August 2021
I had the opportunity to sit down and watch the 2020 Anime "Josee, Tiger and the Fish" (aka "Joze to tora to sakanatachi"). I used to watch a lot of Animes back in my youth, but haven't been keeping up with that trend. But after reading the synopsis for this 2020 Anime, I must admit that I had to sit down and watch it, as this sounded like it could be a good story.

And writer Sayaka Kuwamura definitely managed to pen together a story that not only was entertaining and enjoyable, but also very touching and heartfelt as well. So yeah, "Josee, Tiger and the Fish" is definitely an Anime with a heart.

The art in "Josee, Tiger and the Fish" is pretty classic Anime. It was good and nicely drawn, for sure, but it wasn't exactly an art style that made me go 'wow'. But then again, this story is driven by the its spirit and heart, not by its physical presentation.

The voice acting in "Josee, Tiger and the Fish" was good. I watched the original Japanese langauge version, as I fully on loathe dubbed versions of anything.

After having seen this 2020 Anime from director Kôtarô Tamura, I found out that there is a 2003 Japanese live action movie of the very same story. Needless to say that I am not on a hunt for tracking this down to watch. There was also a 2020 South Korean adaptation of the same story, titled "Josée", that one I have already seen. And I found this 2020 Anime to be more enjoyable than the 2020 South Korean live action movie actually.

If you haven't already seen this 2020 Anime, I can warmly suggest that you do so, because this is one of those stories that sink in and stick with you.

My rating of "Josee, Tiger and the Fish" lands on a well-deserved seven out of ten stars.

Amazing film!
prayinforthefaithless18 July 2021
I went to go see this movie with a friend and neither of us were disappointed. When my boyfriend went to see it a few days before and wasn't fond of it, I was sceptical, but I was glad that my expectations were exceeded.

The only problem I have with the film is that the pacing in the first half is a bit off. Everything seems to happen a bit too quickly, but for a short movie, I can't blame it, and the rest of the movie more than made up for this small detail.

I loved this film and would recommend to anybody who likes emotional romances and an anime-style animation.

Another good romance drama
Movi3DO12 July 2021
This movie is already released online, but it's getting a limited theatrical release tomorrow, so I decided to watch it.

Drama romance anime has been popular for stealing tears from audiences with the heartbreaking and beautiful relationship between the young male and female. It's hard to go wrong with this genre, and this movie definitely went on the right track. This means either capturing the positives of the genre or being formulaic and predictable. Well, both interpretations describe this movie.

Every plot points are pulled straight from the drama romance textbook. This didn't necessarily mean the movie is bad, but the predictability still hampered on the emotion, especially throughout the first half of the movie.

The two main character's relationship was pretty fun because the main girl was a tsundere and could not walk. Even though nothing was new, when the major event happened, their relationship became much more investing. The way both of them grew raised the emotional level significantly, especially from the main girl through what she did to our main guy.

The animation was unsurprisingly gorgeous. The scenes with the ocean and the girl's dream were calm and breathtaking.

There were two major issues with the stories. Near the end, there was a love triangle (you can clearly saw this coming), but got ignored almost right away. Then, the last 10 minutes was purely cheese and forced, even though it was sweet.

Overall, another good romance drama anime despite not offering anything new. 7.5/10.

Stop rating movies 7/10 or 9/10 if all you say is great things about it. Your not a critique, your just another person who watched it. You're the type of people that actually puts people of watching movies when they could find them amazing. If you recommend the movie why tf are you eating it a 7? Honestly just please stfu.

Never give up on your dream, keep fighting
sisubalan12 August 2022
Great movie with an amazing message to never give up on your dream no matter what, just keep trying no matter how many times you fall. Animation was okay, great characters design and voice actors. Wonderful sound scores, the execution was a bit underwhelming for me as it didnt brought me to tear, not a strong tear jerker for me, not enough emotions reflected from the movie. Recommended.

Only a partially successful film adaptation
MarcusCyron17 April 2024
A lot about this film can be considered successful. The drawings are once again very beautiful, even if there have been even more successful Japanese animes in this field in recent years. The plot is quite interesting; for non-Japanese, dealing with disabled people and disability is certainly not ubiquitous in Japan.

But despite being more than just good, the film lacks a bit of depth. The figure drawing is also rather weak. The motivation of none of the characters involved is convincingly presented. Tsuneo remains pale at all, a real character of his own is almost never recognizable. He remains unbelievable. He only shows real emotions twice in the film, only in these moments is he a tangible and believable character. Joze's anger can certainly be explained - but the film fails to provide an explanation. What her grandma wanted, planned and thought is also left to the viewer; the film fails to give an answer.

Films don't have to answer all questions and it's okay if viewers have to think for themselves. But this only works if you have enough information. This leaves beautiful pictures, a nice story, a high claim, but also a lot of questions and a patchwork quilt of a film.

Beautiful animation, but that's about it...
lalita7813 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
If you like great animation, toxic romance, university student montage, and a dragging plot where no one learns anything, please watch! My biggest annoyance with this film is that the arc did not allow for character growth or development. Josee remains rude and horrifying to be around. In fact, she hurts the main character twice with her thoughtlessness and his need to be her caretaker. There is no romance but a strange dependency between Josee and an empathetic boy with dreams that get ruined by a manipulative woman. There were no benefits for the boy to be in this relationship, no epiphany or growth from being with her. He's being used and abused. There were some contradictions-- he was denied last minute due to his accident to go to Mexico, so why does he still get to go? Also, Josee has no skills and has been declared an illustrator or artist (while her art is trash), and she will use this skill to be successful independently. Please, tell me, how? Anyway, it was cute, shallow, and irritating. I rolled my eyes often, hoping it would get better and they would learn something, but the ending was the same as the beginning.
