First-half is great, second-half is disappointing.
whackcar7 December 2020
The first-half & the second-half of this show are so drastically different in presentation & story-telling, that i feel inclined to seperate the review & rating for each part. The first-half is very interesting & has good-character development. I genuinely felt interested in the plot, and the excellent chemistry & unusual attraction between the lead male & female characters. The show keeps a decent pace & spark through this phase & recieves a 9/10 from me.

Now the second half was where everything fall apart. The director was trying to be unpredictable, and ends up ruining his own introduced concepts & relationships. There is an excess of dislikable plot-twists & things just don't seem to go in the right direction anymore. There are also plenty of goofs & obvious plot-holes present. This phase recieves a disappointing 7/10 for me.

Overall, i could even it out at 8/10, but the second-half left a poor after-taste in my mind, and hence, i cannot overlook it. This show had a lot of potential, but the director screwed it up for me. At least the ending isn't too bad, but left me wanting more.

Ambitious but flawed
phillipjbrown5 March 2021
No one can fault South Korean tv for airing such an ambitious science fiction show. Tv doesn't often mention Paul Dirac and Schrödinger's cat. Thr first seven episodes are pacy with a fascinating time travel premise and one of the most 'unusual' sort of romance I've ever seen. But then everything changes with several huge plot twists and an ending that seems more like the writer just ran out of rod than something that makes sense. The intelligent writing and plot just gets confused and the characters seem to change personality without any reason.

Still oy's worth a try if nly to see how good science fiction can be made with minimal CGI.

AMAZING!

This drama has all, comedy, drama, sci-fi, action, suspense and many travels through time. This drama will make your head spin too much. One of the best of this year 2020. I love the actors too.

Remember this day will never dawn again

A book called the prophecy tells how time travel is bought to a halt and this means people from the future need to get the book to prevent this. The main cast are a scientist and a policeman who both have a parent murdered whilst they are young, linked to a time travelling company called Alice. It is a well acted and clever drama with twists and turns and a complicated plot involving different dimensions. I am sure some time travelling purists will pick holes in the science behind the plot but to me it is a bit like astronomy in the fact I cannot get my head around it but do enjoy the ride.

Wasted potential

Warning: Spoilers
Just like many other reviewers, I was blown away by the first chapters and increasingly annoyed as the show progressed. If I were to rate the two parts separately, it would be 10 and 2.

The concept is brilliant: a child with a psychological disability, born of a time traveler, grows up to become a detective, and tries to solve the murder of his mother. It could have been a police procedural, an insight into mental illness or emotions, with a dash of action, sci fi, and drama.

The special effects are pretty good for a TV series, the action sequences are competent, and the cast is really talented (special thanks to the secondary cast members Lee Da-in, Kim Sang-ho, and criminally underused Hwang Seung-eon).

Sadly, Alice deteriorates into a hot mess because of an impossibly clumsy script and inconsistent world building. Many people go as far as calling Alice a rip-off of Dark (the German Netflix time travel series). I think it's taking it too far, but there are clear, ugh, "influences" in the second part.

I wouldn't mind that though if they were cleverly or even semi-competently executed. The way it worked out though, Alice is really a world without Winden. It seems the script writers were writing the script while trying to reenact the drinking sessions of Mr. Ko. Dark is a rare feat and it's hard to get close to its consistency, but c'mon!..

The key plot element is a tiny illustrated book that everyone was after - why? Because of a page saying that someone must kill someone else for the time travel to stop (and it was resolved differently after all)?

Some people travel to the past and interact with the younger copies of themselves, great. At least 4 characters though have carbon copy equivalents in 2020, as if they did not age a day after 30 years. Oh yeah, it's their doppelgangers, right? With the same names, relatives, and occupations, that is. And if I could accept Mr. Ko and his wife, as well as Prof. Seok with his inconsistent glass-wearing habits, what's with Tae-yi herself? Did both copies invented time travel? Oh wait, it wasn't a straight "invention", it was Jin-gyeom who traveled first, because the future Prof. Seok said "do you think it only took 30 years to invent?" and then in a different sentence said that he was a colleague of 2050 Tae-yi, who was in her 30s when she traveled to 1992. The same Tae-yi, already under her assumed name in 2010, acknowledged to the 2020 Tae-yi that it was her in 1992. So, wait, if it was the same person, she was what, in her 60s in 2050 when she became pregnant?

Prof. Seok is a funny guy, overall. In one sentence he says that it doesn't matter what one does in the past and it won't impact the future, in the next that if he goes to the past and warns past self, the past self will be able to avoid injury and benefit his current self. So which one is it, professor?

That is a major sticking point, actually. The Alice executives first were sticking with the mantra of "these are separate timelines". That, however, changed towards the end, when everything started influencing everything else, culminating in the ending that ran counter to what was established in the first chapters.

And, no copy of Dark will be incomplete without the iconic "Ich bin du". If the absurdity wasn't enough, the old evil Jin-gyeom brought a XIX century pistol to a gun fight with futuristic 2050 guns. Was he collaborating with Jonas / Adam in 1899?

The glasses of Prof. Seok (needs glasses to read, can hit a target with a pistol in the dark). The hair of Mr. Ko (full black in 2014, completely bald in 2020). The evil ("dark universe"?) Jin-gyeom subplot whose personality first merged and then didn't merge with the Jin-gyeom-prime. The extraordinary amount of time it took Tae-yi to figure out that she looked EXACTLY like Jin-gyeom's mother after she was told that she looked like Jin-gyeom's mother. The repeated failure to share important pieces of information after umpteenth deadly attack by assailants from the future.

And the ending, oh the ending. 2050 Tae-yi lives on; her son grows to become an architect. Somehow, he does not recognize 2020 Tae-yi - who, you know, looks EXACTLY like his mother, presumably alive? Do-yeon does not know him either; because, of course, who'd remember a classmate you thought was responsible for the death of your best friend, and who you were close friends with later?

I could go on and on, but you get the idea.

I understand that the plot may not be enough to last for the duration of the series they planned, but I wish the scriptwriters focused on the bits they did well. Like the "slice of life", the comedy, the action sequences. Really a shame.

Such complex and profound story line. It never gets boring. A marvelous mixture between crime, drama, sci-fi and action. Highly recommended!

Ending made no sence, why did she remember when the ending changed? When she met him at the end he should have been taken a back since she had his mum's face? His name was the same so therefore he was still that teenage boy, same mum but different future, is it not so or did I miss something?

Mind Blowing sci-fi

Ending explained which I understood from my point of view...

Jin gyeom killed older version of him, then went back to the past again, since he has the ability to control the time, he goes to the day that he wants to alter and closes the time door, also leaves the SCARF of his mom as a MEMORY in that time line. Mom realizes what happened on future from it and hugs the high school Jin gyeom and thank him for it.

Since mom got the memory, so later at 2020 yoon tae Yi also remembers everything, because of same time line. Even the time door got closed Jin gyeom born during time travel, he still has the power, that he can only draw, but stays locked until he meets Yoon Tae Yi face to face.

This is what I understood no confusion...!

South Korea drama at its best... and worse
poinla377 March 2021
The plot and premises are really captivating and promising. The first 6-7 episodes were great, except for some useless or overdramatic lenghts. But as the episodes go, the characters become more silly and dumb, I guess to increase the dramatic tension (most of the time overplayed, like most Korean TV shows). I lost interested because of that, too bad cause that was a really interesting SF plot.

A romantic version of Dark
gorkemfull4 April 2021
Even though the beginning was nice, the plot has became cheaper and emotional, there were lots of contradictions, which was annoying. A lot of unnecessary scenes, that has no place in the plot and the writers did not even try to connect these scenes to the main plot.

Motherhood praising was overwhelmingly exaggerated, women portrayed incapable and illogical even the smartest one is incapable of defending herself and making healthy choices.

Towards the end, the story became a twisted, cheesy and amateur version of dark, which is really disappointing. I mean this could be a nice series, just with adding a little bit of more science, cutting of 90% of the emotional scenes and creating an original plot.

I sometimes dip into foreign language series when I'm out of my usual ones. This was a gamble but it paid off. You like sci-fi? Time travel? Then this is excellent, apart from the slightly creepy mom/romance thing.

I created an account just to talk about this show. The premise is interesting, but what let's the story down is the dumb & illogical decisions made by these supposedly super smart people. I'm only half way through so will see how it goes

Dear past me: save yourself and do not watch this.
iestynjohnevans6 April 2021
The first few episodes of this show are truly excellent. They con you into flushing a further 12 hours of your life away. The middle few episodes deteriorate into a soap-opera-worthy emotional dirge with all attempts at plot development suspended. Just as you are considering giving up and watching something else, the show senses this and feeds you just enough plot and action to push on to the end. At some point in this final episode you will realise there are only 10 minutes of the show left and nothing has actually been explained. 16 hours invested for an ending high on cheese and low on content with the main premise of the show glossed over? It's enough to make you want to go back in time and stop the show from being made...

It Will Leave You With A Question!!!
Chaokage6 February 2021
This is an unusual series. I was not disappointed with this series at all. It was built around a prophecy that added that fantasy element that I enjoy a lot. What was most intriguing about this series is the question it asked regarding the relationship between the two leads Joo Won and Kim Hee-seon. Since this series used time travel as the main driver for the events, you'll definitely be left with a question that you never came across before. Even the writer himself was very careful or, in fact, uncapable of coming up with one. I believe that hurt the story a lot. You can easily feel how unwilling the writer was to give an answer and pretty much left it open even at the most important part of the series THE ENDING.

It has some very good moments but...
jasnuevo26 October 2021
It was a very nice surprise. Sadly what starts as a time travel story soon become a parallel universes story trying to avoid paradoxes due to time travel and at that moment the script loses much of its consistency. Writers of the story don't seem to understand fully the concept of infinite parallel universes and quickly they mess up what otherwise would be an entertaining series.

Outstanding
MrSetyadji26 October 2020
One of the best science-fiction k-drama, but you still get the romance there, but with no kissing or sex scene ... sorry. This movie maybe for nerd, because there are so many quantum physics formula you can get and learn 😁

If you love Back to the Future movies, you'll be love this series! I guaranteed. 🤓

Hankies by the lorry load
kunagueroooooo2 March 2022
The actors must have gone through hundreds of cry sticks making this series, tears in every episode without fail.

However that doesn't make it a bad show, I really enjoyed it. Lots of plot twists to keep you guessing. The main actors played their parts to perfection. But its the non-main actors that seem to ham it up. The females are dipsy and the males are dimwits.

The big question that really needs answering though is, why is the time-travel headquarters called ALICE?

-4 for plot loopholes
balpha-1549813 September 2021
I don't know if it's good actors or main genre gives this sloppy plot 7 stars. Maybe too focused on romance and drama that plot has so many loopholes.

Like just watching episode 2 and already found 4 mistakes firstly how can so high-tech future agents lost to 1 rich boy even in 2020 people can control cars remotely, also how did that guy found right address??and the list goes...

Retarted serie
kerouanikarim7 March 2021
The realisator was too emotional and ended up doing things that doesnt make sense at all because the boy at the end (the park in gyom or whatever is name is) was not supposed to be there. He still putted him in there most probably because the dude is too emotional but by doing so he is contradicting himself and his storyline big time. I understand the dude is a very emotional guy but I dont think all his viewers are as emotional as him to the point of accepting and ending that contradicts itself so much..

Masterpiece
turbine-4902926 December 2021
As a viewer of many well known shows like Breaking Bad, Sci-Fi such as Star Trek/Gate and some of the top notch anime from years passed..

I can say that this show is an absolute masterpiece. It's full of intrigue and suspense. They fantastically incorporate a lot of hilarious encounters between characters which only come about due to the situation they're in.

Each episode is a full hour long and is jam packed with perfectly timed content. The early part of the first episode completely threw me off with how this lovely story would develop.

If you can read subtitles and don't have the attention span of a toddler - you'll enjoy this. I think this show is the next best thing to Back to The Future. With some parallels one could draw.

Sure the CGI could be better and some cinematography taken down a notch. But this didn't impact how much I enjoyed the show.

Good news and bad news...
A_Different_Drummer16 May 2022
The bad news first. If you are a fan of K-Dramas. You already know their fatal flaw. Usually, after a brilliant opening, the writers run out of ideas about halfway in, and start to stumble. Here, to say that the later episodes are "overwritten" is an understatement. Now the good news. Kim Hee-seon may be one of the most photogenic self-identifying female persons on the planet. Many of those overwritten later episodes have two of her in the key scenes. Which makes up for all those pesky script issues!
