It does not matter whether you win or lose, so long as you win! Convoluted logic, I know, but when it comes to the classic rivalry of Spacely Sprockets and Cogswell Cogs, it's to be expected. Let's see how these pretentious old misers fair when they challenge each others' robots to a "friendly" game of spaceball. Today, George is unhappy because he had to wake up a half hour early to pick up Mr. Spacely. They're carpooling. During the drive, Spacely can't get Cogswell off his mind, knowing he was up to something...something big. So big they crash right into it: a ginormous billboard advertising Cogswell's robots. Meanwhile at Cogswell's, the man is dying to see if Spacely came across any of his billboards, and heckles him about it. They begin to argue about who's robots are better, and Cogswell challenges him to a game of spaceball. Spacely's robots, The Sprockets, versus Cogswell's bots, The Cogs. Oh, the gears are gonna grind! But uh oh, Spacely's star pitcher is on leave, so who's gonna pitch? George, of course! No, seriously, he's very, very good. He can make one ball turn into three and knock out the catcher. Ooba dooba!
Meanwhile, Jane is given the daunting task of making cookies for her historical society, and she has to make them the old fashion way, like Great Great Great Grandma used to make. So instead of pressing a button to make the cookies instantly, she has to push buttons for the ingredients...Oh, how quaint! Suddenly, a mysterious can drops from the back of a delivery truck and lands right in the Jetsons' kitchen! Seriously! 'Super Nova Energized Power Particles'. How much would you pay? So while nobody is looking, Elroy adds it to the cookies. I predict hilarity and hijinks will ensue! Once the cookies are baked, Elroy tosses one for Astro and it bounces off the walls and destroys the whole house...now that's a tough cookie! Jane sees the damage and blames it on old fashioned cooking. And so, training commences! George gets abused by robot helpers and Cogswell hires a stereotypical mad scientist to make him a rigged bat and ball. This is going to be quite a game! The robots take the field. Spacely Sprockets are first at bat, and George hits it out of the park. The Cogs don't stand a chance as of late... It's the bottom of the fifth, the Sprockets are in the lead, 12-0. George and his fancy trick pitch are bringing them home. Cogswell's Cogs are a bunch of clunkers; Bottom of the ninth, The Cogs are tailing the Sprocketts at 20-0. Now would be as good a time as any to cheat, so Cogswell activates his trick bat and ball, his robots hit home runs, and they're catching up to the Sprockets! George is growing weary from pitching so many fails, but it's the energy cookies to the rescue! They work exactly like Popeye's spinach and George is once again striking out the dizzy Cogs. The Sprockets win 20-19! When Spacely learns of the energy cookies, he wants the recipe, but it's gone, and so are all the cookies, all eaten by Astro who flies away.
I have to say, this episode is alright, but honestly I don't really care for the Spacely vs. Cogswell episodes, because they're set up to make Mr. Cogswell the antagonist and Spacely the one we're supposed to be rooting for, but he's a real anti-hero. You don't want him to succeed, he's a rotten guy. Seriously their rivalry gets old pretty fast, and Cogswell is the nicer of the two. I think I'd want to work for him instead of that mean little bastard. But anyway, "Team Spirit", forgettable and not much spirit. It's a strike.
