We can’t stop here! This is Bear Country! While Russell Crowe passes the Gladiator torch to Paul Mescal for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, the Oscar-winning actor is getting behind the bar for Derrick Borte’s upcoming action-thriller Bear Country. The project marks another collaboration between Crowe and Borte after teaming up for Unhinged, a thriller starring Crowe as an unstable man obsessed with a woman after a spat of road rage.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Bear Country finds Crowe playing an aging but redoubtable club owner, Manco Kapak, whom a masked gunman robs. When the robbery sidelines his retirement plans and his girlfriend grows distant, his aspirations to live a quiet life shatter like glass breaking against a hardwood floor. As cartel bosses harass Manco and a young status seeker aims to purchase the club, Kapak must decide how to show them who the boss is.

Julian Dennison (Godzilla vs Kong), Minnie Driver, James Rolleston (The Dark Horse) and Erana James are set to star in New Zealand coming-of-age tale One Winter from directors Paul Middleditch and Hamish Bennett.
The title is based on a story by Middleditch, Keith Aberdein and Sonia Whiteman, with Bennett and Whiteman adapting the screenplay. Story is set in New Zealand in 1981 when the arrival of the South African rugby team sets off nationwide protests against apartheid and racism. The film, which is set to begin shooting this summer in New Zealand, is produced by Emma Slade, Sandra Kailahi, Angela Cudd, Angela Sullivan and Alberto Marzan. Troy Lum is an exec producer. Blue Fox is launching international sales here in Cannes this week.

Chicago – America is at a boiling point. The pandemic, the election, the divisiveness and general atmosphere has reformulated us in many profound ways. Director Derrick Borte explores those themes in the new release “Unhinged,” which also has the distinction of being the first film to be distributed to all open nationwide theaters on Friday, August 21st.
Russell Crowe is Tom, a victim of his own desperation and anger. When a put-upon single mom named Rachel (Caren Pistorius) honks at him during a traffic stop, it starts a road rage incident, that escalates into a revenge scenario that becomes increasingly violent. Crowe puts some nuance into the unhinged character, and director Borte follows through on the themes of citizens up against it, predicting the divisions that have been fought during the pandemic.

Unhinged opens with Russell Crowe–identified only in the credits as “Man”–sitting in his pick-up truck outside a suburban house, staring at the tiny match he’s lit, his face impassive and his eyes narrowed. Abruptly he gets out of the truck, grabs an axe and a can of accelerant, and breaks down the door, cutting the man and woman inside to death before burning down the house.
The camera watches all this from a slight distance, as if director Derrick Borte (The Joneses) wants us to view these events, at least at first, objectively. We don’t know who this Man is, we don’t know who he’s killed or what has pushed him to commit these horrendous acts we’ve just witnessed, although we’ll learn a bit more later on.

Russell Crowe is going to save cinema! So goes the marketing push for road-rage thriller “Unhinged,” the first new film to open in theaters since lockdown. Yet it’s worth acknowledging that Crowe hasn’t exactly saved cinema in the past decade, where “Les Misérables,” “The Water Diviner” and “The Nice Guys” are the only moderate highlights. To buy into the hype around “Unhinged,” one has to accept the cult of Crowe and pretend that he’s still a relevant movie star, to pretend it’s no later than 2003’s “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” and Crowe remains a gladiator of cinema.
But even that mind game can’t rescue the lazy B-movie routine of this cheap entertainment from director Derrick Borte, which could be generously described as an homage to Joel Schumacher’s “Falling Down” by way of Steven Spielberg’s “Duel.”

Kelleigh Bannen didn’t really have the spirit-draining aspects of quarantine in mind when she wrote her new song “The Optimist.” The Nashville native, who also hosts Apple Music’s streaming radio show Today’s Country, was thinking more of transformative relationships than national crises when she penned the ballad with Will Bowen and Claire Douglas, and ultimately recorded it at home.
“It was written about the people that can turn you into an optimist and the way love can turn you into an optimist,” Bannen says. “That’s definitely true of my husband,...

"Somebody took something from me." Saban Films has debtued an official trailer for a crazy indie thriller titled American Dreamer, from director Derrick Borte. The film first premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival last year, and also played at the Virginia Film Festival. Playing off the rideshare society we live in, the film is about a driver who works for a company called Hail who makes extra cash chauffeuring a low level drug dealer around town. But when he finds himself in a serious financial bind, he decides to kidnap the dealer's kid - and obviously this doesn't go very well. Jim Gaffigan stars, joined by Robbie Jones, Isabel Arizza, Tammy Blanchard, Alejandro Hernandez, Brian K. Landis, and Curtis Lyons. Yeah, this looks as predictable and as mediocre as you might expect. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Derrick Borte's American Dreamer, direct from YouTube: A down...

“American Dreamer,” which premiered in September at the Los Angeles Film Festival, follows a down-on-his-luck rideshare driver who makes extra cash chauffeuring a low-level drug dealer around town. Robbie Jones (“Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor”), Isabel Arraiza (“Elementary”), Alejandro Hernandez (“New Amsterdam”), and Tammy Blanchard co-star in the movie.
Borte (“The Joneses”) directed from a script he co-wrote with Daniel Forte. The film was produced by Scott Lochmus for Storyland Pictures, in association with the Virginia Film Office and Old Dominion University. Jonathan Gray, Mary Vernieu, Xyz Films, and Sugar Studios executive produced.

Whenever a comedian takes on a dramatic role, critics and audiences alike react one of two ways: they either reject the performance outright for being anything but what the comic is famous for being, or they celebrate it like they’ve just seen a bear doing a card trick. Bill Murray’s turn in The Razor’s Edge? Rejected. Jim Carrey’s performance in The Truman Show? Bear doing a card trick. Comedians are so boxed in to being funny that we either won’t let them out of the box or we fall all over ourselves when they demonstrate the ability to do more than one thing.
Comedian Jim Gaffigan has had dramatic roles before, as recently as Chappaquiddick earlier this year. But he’s never had a dramatic role as substantial or as unbelievably dark as in American Dreamer, the latest film from director Derrick Borte (The Joneses...

The “Edward Scissorhands” hunk and his “The Joneses” fiancée were supposed to tie the knot this weekend at a beautiful ceremony in the Bahamas, but it seems they couldn’t wait and decided to get hitched at Depp’s West Hollywood abode on Tuesday (February 3).
An insider previously told press, “It will be a really simple ceremony. Things are in a great place with them,” regarding the tropical nuptials. But as it turns out, Johnny and Amber had everyone fooled!

After having been picked up for a cool 7 million dollar and some change price tag by the Weinsteins at the Toronto Int. Film Festival back in 2013 and closing the Tribeca Film Fest the following year, in its July release, Begin Again performed quite well at the indie box office and generally well revered. A good will tour for a revitalizing look at Keira Knightley, as well as another exuberant performance from Mark Ruffalo. Luckily the scandal erupting over CeeLo Green happened afer it could have a potential detrimental effect on driving audiences away from the theater.

How To Save a Life: Carney’s Anticipated American Film a Pleasantly Loveable
Though trudging through a somewhat ungainly and slightly anachronistic set-up, John Carney’s latest, Begin Again (originally titled Can a Song Save a Life?) manages to gain a momentous degree of charm in its latter half, ending on a note that’s as satisfyingly untethered as its opening moments are rigidly formulated. Inexplicably, Carney is also able to squeeze some magic from a cast that seems staggeringly opposed to such a stunt, at least judging from a multitude of similar packaged deals in a squalid market of workmanlike indie films featuring such flora and fauna. While the music is hardly as catchy as the Academy Award winning compilations from his 2006 film, Once, a buoyant attitude sometimes fills in here, at least enough to make for an emotionally satisfying final act.

The unloved films of 2009 provide the focus in our final list of the 2000s' overlooked greats...
The year 2009 will partly be remembered as the year Avatar dominating the box office, with audiences flocking to see James Cameron's leafy pulp epic in shimmering 3D. Making almost $2.8bn worldwide, Avatar was a true behemoth, besting Cameron's own Titanic as the highest-grossing film of all time (not adjusted for inflation) and hastening a rush of 3D films in the years that followed.
Films such as 2012, Sherlock Holmes and boozy comedy The Hangover were also among the top 10, but as always, some of the most memorable and individual films of the year were far from the most financially successful. So to round off our series of underrated flicks of the 2000s, here's our selection of 2009's overlooked films...

At ABC‘s upfront, there were a few things that the network wanted to make sure you knew. 1) They are really impressed with the idea that people are going to watch Rebel Wilson do just about anything, and 2) There isn’t anything they’re happier about than bringing you more episodes of television created by Shonda Rhimes.
On these notes, the network would love for you to know that more Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal are coming your way. These, ABC would like to impress upon you (as advertisers) are really good shows. While it should come as no surprise, AMC officially announced today that Talking Dead will return for a third season. Hosted by Chris Hardwick, the series made some changes during the second season, including expanding the show to a one-hour format.
It hasn’t been confirmed what changes will be seen in the third season of Talking Dead, but we’ll have more details later this year. Based on the success of the show, we expect that the one-hour format will continue and that the show will follow the first airing of The Walking Dead.
*Note: We saw a few comments from confused readers, and wanted to confirm that Talking Dead didn’t start until The Walking Dead Season 2 aired. That is why Talking Dead is returning for a third season, while The Walking Dead will be on its fourth.

I love a good slasher movie just as much as the next horror fan. The sub-genre is so hit-and-miss these days. For every Cold Prey or Laid to Rest, we're given 10 more entries that leave you feeling mentally drained by the time the credits roll on them. Anchor Bay Entertainment's Escapee is just lucky enough to fall right in the middle of good and bad in the realm of watchable mediocrity.
Psychology student Abby Jones (Christine Evangelista) makes the mistake of locking eyes with a murderous patient named Harmon (Dominic Purcell) while on a class trip to the local mental institute. Unfortunately, Abby resembles Harmon's girlfriend that he brutally butchered. He escapes from the hospital and heads out in search of Abby, leaving a trail of dead bodies in his wake.
Director / writer Campion Murphy put together the right ingredients for Escapee. The problem is the formula he concocts is overused.

Exclusive: Bravo has put in development a supernatural drama project from writer-director Ry Russo-Young, winner of a 2012 Sundance Special Jury Prize for her film Nobody Walks, and playwright Dorothy Fortenberry. Meanwhile, the cable network’s drama pilot The Joneses, from ABC Studios and writer Liz Tigelaar, will not go forward. “ABC Studios and Bravo have mutually decided not to proceed with production of the drama pilot, The Joneses,” the two companies said in a statement. “We are discussing other projects moving forward.” The Joneses, based on the 2009 indie film of the same name that starred Demi Moore and David Duchovny, was one of Bravo’s first two scripted pilots ordered in December as the reality cable powerhouse is looking to break into the scripted space. The Joneses was originally developed for ABC. Tigelaar then re-did her script to give it a cable sensibility and make it suitable for Bravo. While the pilot was casting,...

Winona Ryder is welcome on Bravo's potential "Heathers" spinoff series. Writer Jenny Bicks told The Hollywood Reporter that she'd "love to have" Ryder, the star of the original 1980s film, appear in her new TV series, if it gets the green light.
The TV version of "Heathers" is set 20 years after the 1988 film with Veronica, Ryder's character, returning to Sherwood with her teen daughter. The surviving "Heathers" have had their own kids, the "Ashleys."
Bicks, who serves as an executive producer and writer on Showtime's "The Big C," will executive produce the Bravo series.
"If Winona Ryder wanted to come in and play something, we'd love to have her," Bicks said.
In October, Ryder told CNN she was concerned about the language of "Heathers" transitioning to Bravo.
"Can they swear on that channel? Because I saw that on, like, Comedy Central once and it was like every other word was bleeped out.

The coming season of "Parks and Recreation" will introduce Ben's (Adam Scott) parents, and it's safe to say his dad will not be the sunniest guy you've ever met.
Unless, that is, the "Parks" writers go against type, because they've cast Jonathan Banks of "Breaking Bad" in the role.
"We were working the character description of Ben's dad, and I said aloud, 'He should act like Mike Ehrmentraut," showrunner Mike Schur tells Hitfix. "So somebody said, 'Well, why can't we just get Jonathan Banks?'"
Meanwhile, TV Guide reports that Glenne Headly ("ER," "The Joneses") will play Ben's mom in the same episode. Her personality is closer to Ben's, and she takes a liking to Ben's girlfriend Leslie (Amy Poehler), but her mood will turn sour when Ben's dad shows up with a much younger girlfriend.
"Parks and Rec" premieres Sept. 20 on NBC. We'll meet Ben's parents in the season's sixth episode.
