The cinema is fortunate to have an historian as a film-maker, in Andrew Pike. Ben Chifley is both hero and anti-hero. Like many heroes, he was flawed, but his contribution to Australia in the post WW2 years is inestimable. His defeat in the 1949 election is well told, with Andrew Pike mentioning Chifley's attempt to nationalise the banks, and his disastrous sacrifice of Labor Party principles in putting the army into the coal mines. He alienated Labor voters for another 23 years. The film does have a problem - digitally shot, it is too contrasty and is riddled with moire effects. Old newsreels are nicely cut, and interviews are delicately handled. Recommmended.
