The Great Ben Chifley Documentary
This charming modest documentary details a genuinely interesting part of Australia's rich political and rural past. Partly reminiscent of the superb film NEWSFRONT of 1978 this 2008 film depicts the life of WW2 Prime Minister and much loved politician BEN CHIFLEY. The film takes the form of a tour through the street where the still existing family home in the large country town of Bathurst is explored and local residents are interviewed. This triggers newsreel and postcard anecdotes which are brought nicely to life through radio broadcasts, letters and music from Australia's 1930s 40s and 50s. CHIFLEY explores his childhood to senior years and lovingly details his tastes, political offices and vast career especially during the War. As a guided tour through a lauded politicians career by exploring his family home it succeeds as both a valentine to a noble man, his age, his town, his huge career and this personal effects. Good for school teens to learn of this era as well as and students of Australia's political history as well as senior citizens who knew the times and admired the man himself.
