A very bland Western...
paul_haakonsen16 August 2021
Normally I am not one that is particularly keen on Western movies, as it tends to be far in between good ones that manage to entertain me. But as luck would have it, I had the opportunity to sit down and watch the 2021 movie "Honor Among Thieves", so I did.

Now, I wasn't really harboring much of any expectations to writer Jason Watson and director Brett Bentman's movie, as I had never heard about it prior to getting sit down to watch it. But hey, at least the writer and director had every opportunity to win me over here.

Turns out that "Honor Among Thieves" was just a generic Western movie. While the intentions might have been the driving force behind the movie, the end result was a subpar experience. The storyline was just a bit too bland for me, and it didn't really have much of any excitement or enjoyment to it. And the character gallery in the movie was about as interesting as tumbleweed bouncing by in the wind.

Sure, they had managed to get a believable enough atmosphere to the movie, but the lack of an interesting storyline just made the movie feel prolonged and it was an ordeal to sit through it to the end.

The acting in the movie was fairly wooden and rigid, lacking proper commitment most of the times. So it never really felt natural as the actors and actresses trotted along throughout a bland and generic script and dialogue.

The 2021 movie "Honor Among Thieves" is a movie that came and went without any lasting impression or anything. This movie was highly forgettable as it was so incredibly mundane.

My rating of "Honor Among Thieves" lands on a three out of ten stars.

Western lover
acmq691 December 2021
I love westerns, I've seen so I can't remember all, this one is the WORST. The acting, costume, set up, are an insult to a western lover.

If you're ready to waste your time watch it, is up to you.

Waste of time

Warning: Spoilers
Not only is this the worst western I've seen in a while, it's also the worst film of any genre I've seen in quite a while. The main characters don't ride horses, they just appear in one town and then another (all the towns happen to be the same location with very little effort to appear as a different place.) The characters have few redeeming qualities, and as a viewer I cared not a whit about their future. They are dull. The main villain is killed off too early. He chewed enough scenery that it is an inexplicable early demise. This film is a complete waste of time.

Unfortunately, no budget
supermellowcali1 August 2021
It seems possible that this story could have worked with good actors (the villain was particularly bad), but there were also serious flaws in the directing as well, making the story seem as unbelievable as it was boring.

A very poorly designed storyline

Warning: Spoilers
Every good film must have a solid foundation which is the story. This film had poor motivation for the main character. He decides to go after a kidnapper of a girl for the sole purpose of receiving a fortune in gold from her father. This is not a likeable main character. He hesitates to take the mission, thinking there might be a situation in which he has to kill the kidnapper because he has sworn off killing. But at the moment in which he faces the bad guy, there's no inner struggle at all. He wounds the bad guy in a shootout and then calmly kills an incapacitated man with ease. When he brings the girl home to her father we find out she is in love with him and wants to marry him but we are given absolutely no clue to this point of her feelings, no character development at all. When she is reunited with her father, there's no emotional reunion, as if she just came home from shopping. Then two associates of the man the main character killed jump him and steal the bounty he received for rescuing the girl, yet there is no explanation for how the thieves could have had the slightest idea he received any bounty. Then there is a sudden flash forward of five years and we discover that the marriage of our main character and the girl is on rocky ground with them cursing at each other.. The main character decides to try to get the stolen gold back from the two men who stole it from him. The thieves are anything but dangerous or daunting, and appear more as comedians and blithering idiots. The climax of the story, the shootout, occurs midway in the film. The ending of this film is ridiculous and not worth describing. What is the point to this? This is a disjointed amalgamation of scenes with no point, no central mission for the main character. Not a good example of screenwriting craft. The producer should have had a better slush pile script reader and not have invested in a poor quality screenplay.

Great Movie!
HonestIndyReviewer15 May 2021
I saw this movie at a festival and I gotta say it's pretty darn good considering the fact that this team shot the movie in the midst of Covid. Very creative in the editing department too. The producer said it was filmed at one location, and giggled about it. Good job B22 Films!

Really Fun Modern Western
milligancharm28 July 2021
Lots to enjoy in this flick. Well directed, well acted and just an all around good story. Unfortunate cover art, because it looks like Luis Guzman, so I almost passed this up several times thinking it was a comedy (no offense to Luis Guzman, he's hilarious but I don't like Western comedies). Glad I took a stab and picked it up. Surprisingly good and very entertaining with a protagonist you can cheer for.

Good Modern Western
januszlvii26 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Honor Among Thieves is a good modern western. Is it a classic like Shane or The Big County? No but considering it was made this year very good. It has all of the traditional western settings: Texas after the Civil War, good versus evil, and of course a showdown between good guy Jim and the bad guy. Jim ( Thom Halum) is a Civil War veteran returning from the war ( he was on the Confederate side) who is tired of war ( he fought in the Mexican/American war as well). As he says "No one wins in a war." He runs into a bar patron who wants him to join a gang to fight Northerners even though the war is over and he refuses. There is also a love interest and her name is Marisol ( Elizabeth Tabish who reminds me of Madeleine Stowe ( as a Stowe fan I will watch for more movies with her)). She gets kidnapped by the leader of the gang that the patron is a member of and kills him saving her. Interesting enough Marisol is 40 ( she notes that herself) and has never married because her father does not consider anyone good enough for her ( he was probably right). Marisol decides to pick Jim as a husband ( interesting that she did the picking and he was reluctant( but agreed)) and her father gives him a wedding present of $10,000. Spoilers ahead: Later on the patron and his brother rob Jim of the money and he must face them to get it back. No shock Jim succeeds with help from Marisol and the bar owner. The best scenes are the ones with Jim and Marisol together ( communication is no issue because both are well educated) and you can see how much in love they are with each other. Jim especially needs her because he can finally settle down and enjoy the rest of his life in Mexico with her. The bar owner knows she is special telling Jim at the end to "Take care of that woman." You see Jim and Marisol smiling as they go away to start a new life together. 8/0 stars.

Civility in War

This movie questions so many of the same things I do. The girl was fantastic! All the other actors were good as well. Got a little lost midway but overall enjoyed the journey.

Better Than Most
hackraytex12 November 2021
I am a fan of westerns. I am always ready to check out independent westerns and I also have to admit not being able to stay long with some of them since these is clear lack of experience in the acting and some other elements. I am often pleasantly surprised to find some that are pretty good and have actors with experience who know what they are doing. This the second surprise in a few days. The other one being named Scalped. This one shows very good acting from participant who have a respectable amount of experience. A message to those whose movies I had to bail out of, keep working at it since experience is the best teacher.
