Despite its cast of modern stars, including Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez, the movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves throws back to the game’s heyday in the 1980s. In addition to cameo appearances by a gelatinous cube and the green-flame blade, Pine’s bard Edgin Darvis and Rodriguez’s barbarian Holga Kilgore pass by a notable sextet.
Viewers of a certain age might recognize the six fellow adventurers as Hank the ranger, Eric the cavalier, Diana the acrobat, Presto the magician, Sheila the thief, and Bobby the barbarian. Fans first met these six heroes in 1983, when the cartoon show Dungeons & Dragons premiered on CBS. Produced by Marvel and Tsr, publishers of the game guidebook, Dungeons & Dragons ran for 27 episodes across three seasons.
As shown in the opening that ran with each episode, the six heroes were regular teens in the real world who boarded a Dungeons & Dragons roller coaster,...

Lionsgate is set to buy Hasbro’s Entertainment One film and TV business for $500 million under a deal unveiled Thursday.
The price tag consists of $375 million in cash, subject to certain purchase price adjustments, and the assumption of production financing loans, the companies said before the stock market open. “The transaction has been approved by both companies’ boards of directors and remains subject to customary closing conditions, including the receipt of regulatory approvals.” The deal is expected to close by the end of 2023.
The sale covers a content library of “nearly 6,500 titles, active productions for non-Hasbro owned IP like The Rookie, Yellowjackets and Naked and Afraid franchises, and the eOne unscripted business, which will include rights for certain Hasbro-based shows like Play-Doh Squished,” the companies said. “The eOne film and TV business being sold also includes Hasbro’s interest in the Canadian film and TV operations of Entertainment One Canada Limited.

Maybe there's hope for Eagan.
On Manifest Season 4 Episode 18, Mr. "No Honor Among Thieves found himself walking down the aisle with the biggest lunatic to grace the small screen.
Was he deranged? Was he playing Angelina at her own game? It was hard to tell, but his actions following the nuptials were the deciding factor.
It seems Eagan has been in cahoots with Adrian all along and is planning Angelina's downfall -- at least, that's the only message to take from it.
Adrian has been crafty in the past by working with Angelina, but he realized the error of his ways on the first half of Manifest Season 4.
Sometimes, you need a nudge to know when you're being taken for a ride, and Adrian showing up might have shown Angelina that her new husband is not to be trusted.
Eagan undoubtedly married Angelina to be deemed one of the eight...

Update: Apart from big new opener The Little Mermaid, which we detailed here, this weekend was notable for propelling Universal’s Fast X past the $500M mark globally, and Disney/Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to over $730M worldwide.
The Fast & Furious franchise had, earlier this week, crossed $7B globally while the latest installment drove across the half-century mark during the current frame to become the No. 3 biggest studio title of 2023 both worldwide and internationally. The split so far is $399.3M offshore and $108M domestic for a total $507.26M global. The overseas weekend was $87.3M in 84 markets, a 58% drop.
Through Sunday, the performance is above F9 and Hobbs & Shaw, and just below F8 and F7 in the same markets This excludes China where FX has surpassed the lifetimes of Captain America: Winter Soldier, Thor: Ragnarok, Doctor Strange, GOTG2, Ant-Man and Justice League. It is one of...

Disney+ just had its best weekend in months, thanks to the streaming debut of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.”
The third “Ant-Man” flick, which once again features Paul Rudd in the starring role, was the most-streamed movie in the U.S. last week, according to Whip Media’s movie ranker, which is based on viewership data from TV Time, its TV and movie tracking app with more than 25 million global registered users.
That’s a big deal for Disney+. Why? Because it had been a minute since Disney+ topped Whip Media’s movie ranker — back in early February, when “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” landed on the service.

It’s not like Disney+ has had no success of late; “Peter Pan & Wendy,” for example, landed in the second most-streamed spot just a few weeks ago on Whip Media’s ranker.

Just before “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal) arrives on PVOD May 16 (an unusually long 41 days after theatrical release), three films — two are new releases — ranked #1 this week.
May 12 saw the debut of two movies with similar plots. In “The Mother,” Jennifer Lopez is a retired government agent who rescues the daughter she gave up for adoption years before, while “Hypnotic” stars Ben Affleck as a cop trying to find his missing daughter. There the resemblance ends: “The Mother” is #1 at Netflix, while Robert Rodriguez’s $70 million “Hypnotic” opened in theaters to disastrous results.
The difference doesn’t lie with the couple’s respective star power, and both films draw on the same “Taken” template. However, “The Mother” seems fresher with Lopez in the Liam Neeson/Gerard Butler role and it’s a streaming original — a platform that makes it easier to attract viewers with a familiar name.
Affleck remains a viable draw.

Paramount Picture and eOne’s “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” will be available to stream on Paramount+ on Tuesday, May 16. This comes 47 days after its March 31 domestic theatrical debut, continuing Paramount’s mostly-firm 45-day window — most movies arrive on home video on a Tuesday — between theatrical and streaming which began in July 2021 with “A Quiet Place Part II.” The film has been available to rent on PVOD for $20 or buy digitally for $25 since May 2, with a DVD, Blu-ray and 4K release arriving May 30.
The film received solid reviews and excellent word of mouth, but the $150 million franchise starter barely topped $205 million worldwide in theatrical earnings. The Dungeons and Dragons brand was a prime example of “IP for the sake of IP.” None of its admittedly impressive cast qualified as a butts-in-seats draw. Moreover, the film was initially slated for March 10 before being moved to March 31.

During a new golden age of fantasy films and television shows, "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" somehow managed to stand out from the crowd and deliver something fresh and unique. This is a movie that knows what to take seriously (the characters' motivations) and what not to take so seriously (everything else). The film beautifully captures the chaos, mistakes, selfishness, and comedy of a tabletop RPG session, one with hilarious cameos and a great Chris Pine performance.
"Dungeons & Dragons" is also a surprisingly great-looking movie, with a fantastic mix of VFX and practical effects for the variety of creatures in the film. We have not only essential "Dungeons & Dragons" creatures like, well, a dragon, but there's also a gelatinous cube and more esoteric creatures like the displacer beast, intellect devourer, and a mimic. What's more, there are plenty of practical suits in the film, including a dragonborn...

There's nothing quite like gathering with your friends for a rowdy session of "Dungeons & Dragons" or any fantasy tabletop role-playing game. But if that's not an option, playing together virtually from home will do in a pinch.
Despite having dominated the tabletop RPG market ever since its arrival in 1974, "Dungeons & Dragons" hasn't had the easiest time translating its appeal to the screen. Courtney Solomon's 2000 "D&d" movie is more of a cringe-fest than an amiable cheese-fest, save for a never-hammier Jeremy Irons somehow doing both the most and the least as the film's villain. (That it somehow got two straight-to-video sequels is an achievement even the savviest D&d player would struggle to pull off.) More than two decades later, Paramount finally gave the property another go with "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," hiring John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein — the duo behind 2018's glorious action...

Jonathan Goldstein's and John Francis Daley's new film "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" follows the hilarious adventures of a ragtag group of, well, thieves who were separated years before in a heist gone wrong. Edgin Darvis (Chris Pine) and Holga (Michelle Rodriguez) spent a few years in prison before escaping to find their old compatriots and return Edgin to his teenage daughter Kira (Chloe Coleman). They find that Kira has been living in luxury with Forge (Hugh Grant) a former conman who has become incredibly wealthy while his friends languished in prison. It's Forge did not come by his fortunes honestly, and indeed has made some shady deals with mysterious -- and clearly evil -- red wizards.
Because Forge is played by Hugh Grant, however, he comes across less like a calculating villain and more like an affable cad. He is one of the film's antagonists, but...

The following post contains spoilers for "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves."
Before we begin, I have a confession. I've never played Dungeons and Dragons. I've always wanted to, but all the players I knew were deep in campaigns with more characters and subplots than a Tolkien appendix. It was daunting to jump in. Before seeing this movie, I didn't know a mimic from a displacer beast, and I only had a vague idea of the dangers of gelatinous cubes. After "Honor Among Thieves," I'm posting a Craigslist ad for a bard seeking a patient Dungeon Master and other rogues to join his party. Lucky for noobs like me, the internet is littered with beginner's guides. Goodbye, hours of my life. Hello, new nerd obsession.

Studios are finally starting to get with the program. For the sixth straight week, a new release was tops at the box office with Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves comfortably winning the weekend behind very positive critical (91% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audience (A- CinemaScore) notices. D&d was the first of the six films not to be a sequel, but you can only expect so much of the 2023 film landscape. Regardless, it's nice to have more films being regularly released on the schedule.

If you were raised on a healthy dose of "Lord of the Rings" and "Game of Thrones," you may wonder when exactly the fantasy genre sold out for comedy. Of course, those adaptations have the occasional gag, but when compared to the comedic stylings of "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," they are very somber affairs altogether. So what happened to the serious side of wizards and warriors? Why couldn't we get a "Dungeons & Dragons" movie that took this stuff seriously?
But look closer at both the gameplay and the culture, and you'll see that "Dungeons & Dragons" has always been rooted in comedy. Every time we sit down to play, we filter our own consumption of popular culture through character decisions. So let's talk about why humor is an integral part of "Dungeons & Dragons" and why "Honor Among Thieves" does a great job of translating that to the screen.

Paramount Pictures had itself one heck of a year in 2022, and the studio already has one big hit on the books in 2023 with "Scream VI" (which is nearing $150 million worldwide after this past weekend). But the studio rolled the 20-sided dice with a big-budget reboot of "Dungeons & Dragons" with "Honor Among Thieves," which hit theaters over the weekend. The results are a mixed bag of good news and bad news. Unfortunately, even taking the good with the bad, this movie has a rough road ahead, financially speaking.
"Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" pulled in an estimated $38.5 million during its opening weekend, per Box Office Mojo. That was on the higher side of expectations, which had the fantasy film from directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley taking in $30 million on the low-end. It also entered the weekend expecting to pull in a pretty under-whelming $25 million from international markets,...

“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” conjured up $38.5 million at the box office this weekend — a respectable figure given the movie was based on a tabletop role-playing game from the ’70s. And whether you’re an old-school D&d player (like this writer) or a newer fan (thanks to “Stranger Things”), “Honor Among Thieves” includes plenty of fan service.
Classic Roles With a Twist
In the tabletop game (and licensed video game adaptions), players take on different classes or jobs, the archetypes being fighter, cleric, thief and wizard. Amongst those archetypes may be variations; fighters can be rage-driven barbarians, or divine-infused paladins.
Each major character in “Honor Among Thieves” aligns with an existing D&d class: Michelle Rodriguez’s Holga is a barbarian with her favored weapon — a battle axe; Rege-Jean Page is a paladin who is almost comically virtuous.
It’s fun seeing these classes and their abilities come...

March really has been great at the box office, beginning with Michael B. Jordan’s “Creed III,” followed by two out of three franchise sequels that outperformed their original movies. This week saw the release of a new version of a popular role-playing game, as Paramount released “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” into 3,855 theaters on Friday.
The movie, starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Hugh Grant, Regé-Jean Page, and more, came into the weekend with terrific reviews after a SXSW Film Festival debut, and then Paramount gave the movie a number of previews leading up to its official Thursday opening. In fact, the movie racked up $5.6 million in those early previews, including $3.5 million on Thursday, and that number added up to a fantastic $15.3 million for Friday.

“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” an adaptation of the popular role-playing game, ignited at the international box office with $33 million from 60 markets.
Paramount and eOne’s film also opened in North America with $38.5 million, bringing its global tally to $71 million. It’s a good start, especially considering Hollywood’s track record in adapting games for the big screen. But “Dungeons & Dragons” needs to keep playing in theaters to justify its $150 million price tag before marketing.
Overseas audiences will be key to the success of “D&d.” The film, directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley and starring Chris Pine and Regé-Jean Page, enjoyed the biggest start in China with $5 million, followed by the U.K. with $4.3 million, Mexico with $2.4 million, Australia with $2.4 million, and Germany with $2 million.

“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” has an ensemble cast that features big-name stars like Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez, and up-and-comers like Justice Smith and Sophia Lillis.
There’s a mid-film cameo by an A-list star that is so unexpected — and unexpectedly funny — that audiences will burst into laughs.
But be warned, major spoilers about the “Honor Among Thieves” cameo ahead.
After escaping the prison in Icewind Dale, where they were imprisoned for two years, cellmates Elgin (Chris Pine) and Holga (Michelle Rodriguez) hope to reconnect with their families.

Gather ye round as I pull up my sleeves, and tell you a story of honor among thieves. Specifically, the tale of "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," the new comedy-tinged fantasy adventure from "Game Night" directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, which is testing its mettle at the box office for the first time this weekend.
Produced by Paramount Pictures for a $150 million budget, with 50% of the financing coming from Hasbro subsidiary and U.K. distributor eOne, "Honor Among Thieves" is on track to debut at the top end of earlier projections, though still with a difficult path ahead. The Hollywood Reporter estimates that the "Dungeons & Dragons" movie will easily take the weekend No. 1 spot with $40 million stateside, after projections early in the week pointed to a $30-40 million start. The film had already grossed $15.3 million by Friday, including Thursday night previews and other early screenings.

Hark! “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” looks to reach the top of box office charts in its opening weekend, besting the sophomore outing of “John Wick: Chapter 4.”
“Honor Among Thieves” scored $15.3 million in its opening day, a figure that includes $5.6 million from Thursday screenings and specialty previews. Playing in 3,855 venues, the fantasy comedy is projecting a finish around $40 million, which would come in around the higher end of estimates heading into the weekend.
That’s a solid figure for “Honor Among Thieves,” which Paramount has thrown support behind with a sweeping press tour and a premiere at the SXSW Film Festival. Along with the studio, Entertainment One (eOne) covered a good fraction of the production budget for the film, which totals about $150 million between the two banners. eOne is a subsidiary of Hasbro, which controls the “Dungeons & Dragons” intellectual property.

This piece contains mild spoilers for "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves."
There's no denying the impact that "Dungeons & Dragons" has had on popular culture over the past few decades. The tabletop's deep world-building and encouragement of roleplaying gave it a particular reputation of being for nerds at best, and being the tool of Satanists at worst.
Of course, what was once considered uncool usually becomes cool again, and D&d has seen a resurgence in recent years thanks to properties like "Critical Role" and "Stranger Things." It has made a similar inroad to mainstream success as comic books, which saw renewed interest once the Marvel Cinematic Universe made the nerd zone accessible to general audiences. Sure, comic book movies had been successful before, but not at the levels that the MCU brought them to.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor among Thieves is at last here, and as led by Chris Pine with a song in his heart, and a lute in his hands, the film acts as a massive introduction to the Forgotten Realms of early D&d lore for a wider audience. That’s right, the game that was once accused of promoting evil is going mainstream with a feel-good comedy! Which is definitely one valid approach to the material.
Indeed, over the many, many years that Dungeons & Dragons has existed, a vast array of worlds (known to tabletop gamers as “campaign settings”) have presented players with a variety of universes, settings, storytelling techniques, and arguably even “genres.” They can be funny, scary, and often always thrilling. They also represent a rich tapestry from which filmmakers at Paramount Pictures can draw.

[Editor’s note: The following story contains spoilers for “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.”]
A good “Dungeons & Dragons” session always features some memorable NPCs (that’s a “non-playable character” for you newbies) and supporting characters for the central party to encounter. In the new film “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” our heroes come across plenty of allies and enemies, but none make quite as immediate an impression as Marlomen, the ex-lover of barbarian Holga (Michelle Rodriguez) who is played in an unexpected one-scene cameo by Mr. Jackson Maine himself: Bradley Cooper.
The scene is a delightful surprise for many reasons, starting with the fact that Marlomen is a diminutive halfling, only reaching the ripped Holga’s belly button. Then there’s a fact that he’s pretty clearly patterned off of the Hobbits from “Lord of the Rings,” living in a cottage that brings The Shire immediately to mind.

As my only experience with Dungeons & Dragons comes from the godawful live-action movie starring Jeremy Irons, I haven’t been quite sure what to expect from Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. What do you get when you team up a warrior, a young inexperienced wizard, a shape-shifting tiefling druid, and a charming, cocky thief? You get the four main characters of the fantasy adventure/comedy Dungeon & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
The movie kicks off in a frozen wasteland where a prison houses Edgin (Chris Pine) and Holga (Michelle Rodriguez), a pair of thieves up for early parole. Edgin attempts to regale the parole board with a tale of how he and Holga fell into a life of crime. He reveals they were charged with taking care of his young daughter and that they only ever stole from those who could afford it and never, ever hurt anyone.
His story is actually a ploy to delay the parole board’s decision until a missing member of the board arrives.

Paramount and Entertainment One’s “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” got off to a promising start yesterday. The $150 million adaptation of the popular table-top role-playing game, which also opens overseas in 50 territories, earned $4.1 million via Thursday previews that began as early as 3:00 pm. When the handful of nationwide sneak previews are tossed in, that’s $5.6 million heading into the traditional Fri-Sun weekend, giving the film a shot at a $40 million-plus opening.
Tracking has been at around $30 million for weeks, but all parties hope the would-be franchise starter will benefit from strong reviews, encouraging word-of-mouth and a lack of kid-friendly offerings in recent months. We also haven’t had a young-skewing title that wasn’t part of a complicated superhero cinematic universe since Universal and DreamWorks’ “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” over Christmas weekend.

This article spoils a great joke from "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves." Proceed with caution!
After "Game of Thrones" inspired a wave of fantasy projects seeking to replicate the tone of HBO's dark, gritty, depressingly violent fantasy series, it's almost surprising when we get a new fantasy TV show or film that remembers you can have fun with the genre. This is why the scene where the harfoots sing a little walking song in "The Rings of Power" is so special and heartfelt; why "The Dragon Prince" bringing epic fantasy to young audiences is so important; and why "The Legend of Vox Machina" capturing the chaos and silly energy of tabletop RPG sessions makes for such an enjoyable experience.
This is to say, there were many ways "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" could have failed miserably. It could have been too meta like the "D&d" episode of "Community,...

"Let the games begin." Such is the title of a clip from the highly-anticipated "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," which is based on the beloved tabletop role-playing game, "Dungeons & Dragons." "D&d" has been steadily gaining mainstream popularity over the last 50 years since its release, and it's about time that we got a riveting, live-action rendition of this particular fantasy adventure. "Honor Among Thieves" looks like a hell lot of fun, replete with a band of thieves who must make their way out of a dangerous area while battling "D&d" monsters, who display no mercy toward the players.
The clip already proves how some aspects of the tabletop game have been successfully translated onto the big screen. The primary threat in this segment, a displacer beast, is shown using its standard powers of bending light and creating illusions to trick players while being resistant to all ranged attacks.

Fans of the long-running role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons have known for decades how the experience of playing the game is character-based and acting-friendly. In addition to fostering camaraderie between friends or family members who play together, it encourages imagination and improvisation, skills any actor learns to develop and foster as they continue to practice their craft.
It's no surprise, then, that more and more actors are getting into the D&d craze. One actor who's found himself quite literally and figuratively getting into it is Chris Pine, who portrays the bard-class Edgin Darvis in "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves." Pine's character in the film is both traditionally heroic and charmingly self-effacing, allowing the actor to better integrate into the ensemble nature of the film and its RPG source material.

If only "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," an enjoyable fantasy-action romp, was actually the first-ever "D&d" movie. Unfortunately, it's not. That dubious distinction goes to 2000's "Dungeons & Dragons," a really weird anomaly of the early 2000s fantasy craze. Make no mistake – that film does not need a vulgar auteurist re-evaluation or even a defense, as it is a very bad movie filled with problematic character archetypes, terrible dialogue, and even worse CGI. You don't have to watch it to understand or enjoy "Honor Among Thieves," so unless you have some liquid assistance and some friends with you, we recommend you skip this in your "D&d" lore recap.
That being said, if you absolutely have to watch "Dungeons & Dragons," do it for one single reason: Jeremy Irons. Portraying the evil mage Profion, his entire character boils down to him just wanting to control the entire land for vague sociopolitical reasons.

We’re just one week away from the March 31st theatrical release date of Paramount Pictures’ Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which is based on the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game franchise – and just in case the positive reviews (there’s a bunch of them quoted in the final trailer) haven’t convinced someone to see the movie, Paramount is now using the Freaks and Geeks connection to try to lure in viewers. In the new ad that you can check out in the Twitter embed below, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves director John Francis Daley is reunited with Samm Levine and Martin Starr, his co-stars from the short-lived but beloved TV series Freaks and Geeks, which went off the air twenty-three years ago after just one season.

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley's upcoming fantasy film "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," due in theaters on March 31, will be the fourth live-action film to be based on the celebrated role-playing game first published by Gary Gygax and Dave Arenson in 1974. The game version of "Dungeons & Dragons" has had a colorful and fraught history, offering a popular activity that both nerds and metalheads could enjoy, while also often attracting the ire of right-wing censorship groups who felt its themes of magic and pretend were somehow damaging the minds of the nation's youth.
It remains popular to this day, periodically appearing in popular media. It was featured in an episode of the short-lived but beloved 1999 TV series "Freaks and Geeks" which, maybe not incidentally, starred co-director Daley when he was 14. More recently, the characters on "Stranger Things" played a "Dungeons & Dragons" campaign, ostensibly bringing the game...

Chloe Coleman is making a name for herself in fantasy and science fiction films, having appeared in the box office hit Avatar: The Way of Water as well as her role in the time-travel dinosaur film 65. Now, she’s playing Kira, a pivotal but mysterious character in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. She sat down with Den of Geek to talk about filming among practical effects and wearing a fantastic wardrobe.
Den of Geek: Your character is a bit of a mystery. What can you tell us about her?
Chloe Coleman: My character, Kira, is the daughter of Edgin, who is the bard [played by Chris Pine]. Without giving anything away, I can tell you that family is very important to Edgin. It’s actually the most important thing to him. Kira and the whole team have incredible uphill battles to fight the entire time.

At its heart, "Dungeons & Dragons" is an improv exercise. Put six people in a room together, give them a common goal, and sooner or later they'll embrace the fantasy so long as everybody else is playing along. There's a magic to tabletop that rewards anybody willing to roll with the punches, regardless of where the dice fall. "D&d" isn't the only tabletop role-playing game of its kind, and it likely isn't even the best. But it is the best known, which at least ensures that everybody knows what they are getting into.

Disney’s live-action take on The Little Mermaid has been cleared for theatrical release in China, as has Fast X — the penultimate installment in Universal’s long-running Fast & Furious action franchise. Dates are still to be set for both films in the market which has increasingly been handing out day-and-date releases for Hollywood titles even if audiences have been somewhat tepid of late. Hope springs.
The Little Mermaid, directed by Rob Marshall and starring Halle Bailey as Ariel, begins overseas rollout on May 24 and swims to North America on May 26.
Fast X, from director Louis Leterrier, goes a week earlier with international play revving up on May 17 and the U.S. and Canada joining on May 19. The Fast movies have been major attractions in China with the franchise (including Hobbs & Shaw) grossing over $1.2B since Fast & Furious 6 in 2013. F9 in 2021 had a staggered overseas release with...

For Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves star Chris Pine, it all started with the story.
“I have to like the script,” Pine told The Hollywood Reporter Sunday evening at the film’s Los Angeles premiere about what made him say yes to his role as the lovable, lute-playing bard Edgin. “For me, it was the fact that [Dungeons & Dragons] felt earnest and heartfelt and grounded. It didn’t feel jaded or cynical or meta or postmodern. It just was big-budget, old fashioned moviemaking. The kind of feeling of The Princess Bride and Willow and The NeverEnding Story, and all the stuff that I watched as a kid.”
With a screenplay by Michael Gilio and director duo John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein — and story by Gilio and Chris McKay — Honor Among Thieves is rooted in comedy, unlike some of the darker, more serious fantasy films in recent years. The...

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves pulls from the camaraderie of the roleplaying game from which it’s based to deliver on a fantastical adventure. Game adaptations on the silver screen get a bad rap, as they’re often dismissed as poor storytelling right out of the gate. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is an enjoyable adventure with the potential for a charming franchise.
