Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon are taking the title of their next film to heart. They’re set to direct the horror-comedy project “Family Movie” and star alongside their children, Travis and Sosie Bacon.
The foursome will produce for Mixed Breed Films alongside Norman Golightly at Dark Castle Entertainment. Neon International will represent the foreign rights and introduce it at AFM this week while CAA Media Finance will represent the U.S. rights.
The film, based on a screenplay by Dan Beers (“Premature”), follows an eclectic but tight-knit family of filmmakers who suddenly find themselves in a real-life horror movie when a body turns up on the set of their latest low-budget slasher. As the production spirals comically out of control, they realize the only solution to keep filming is to cover up the murder, by any means necessary.

Julia Roberts is no stranger to intense roles, but Leave the World Behind took things up a notch—straight to voicelessness! In one standout scene, Hollywood’s original Pretty Woman pushed herself to the brink, giving such a gut-wrenching performance that she literally couldn’t speak afterwards. Yep, Roberts went all in, pouring every ounce of emotion into her character until her voice just checked out.

For an actor who has spent decades captivating audiences with her charisma and charm, this loss of words was nothing short of monumental. It’s clear that Roberts’ dedication to her craft’s only deepened over the years, and this scene is proof that she’s still got it, even if she’s left speechless in the process.

Bela Bajaria, chief content officer at Netflix, gave a powerful speech about gender equality and access to education during Variety‘s Power of Women presented by Lifetime event in Hollywood on Thursday night.
During her acceptance speech highlighting the work of education organization Room to Read, Bajaria paid homage to her two great-grandmothers, who were both married by the age of 14 and unable to pursue a college education due to cultural customs in rural India.
“My daughters are the first women in my family with freedom to forge their own path,” Bajaria said. “They stand on a lot of people’s shoulders — including my mother’s and great grandmothers’. And they know plenty of women aren’t so lucky.”
The chief content officer reflected on the social and familial expectations in many countries that require girls to spend significant time tending to tasks such as feeding livestock or bringing clean water home.

When it comes to the film industry, it is safe to say that there is a lot of competition. While most of the time, actors point their competitive nature at people they barely know, sometimes, it can be directly pointed toward someone they are related to. Netflix has announced its newest sports series, Starting 5, which will premiere on October 9, 2024. The 10-part series provides an intense, behind-the-scenes look at the 2023-24 NBA season through the eyes of five of the league’s biggest players – Jimmy Butler (Miami Heat), Anthony Edwards (Minnesota Timberwolves), LeBron James (Los Angeles Lakers), Domantas Sabonis (Sacramento Kings), and Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics).
The series captures their battles on and off the court as they chase greatness, push through injuries, and balance the demands of family and legacy. James pushes himself harder than ever to stay healthy – and dominant – in his 21st season, while Edwards electrifies with his rapid rise.

Butler’s relentless drive propels the Heat, Sabonis anchors the Kings with his versatile play, and Tatum leads the Celtics in their quest for a record 18th championship. Starting 5 delivers an unfiltered view of life at the pinnacle of professional basketball.

Following the release of It Ends with Us, domestic violence has been one of the hottest topics raging in the industry as of late. What further served as fuel for this fire was Blake Lively, whose way of promoting the movie and addressing the serious issues raised in it has made her the epitome of some real controversy and backlash, especially for her alleged “toxic behavior.”

Julia Roberts, on the other hand, further seems to be making matters look worse for Ryan Reynolds’ wife. This comes after an old interview of Roberts for her 1991 movie Sleeping with the Enemy was recently brought back to light. In this, she was seen having the most empathetic response to a question on domestic violence—something that is landing Lively further in trouble.

Director Ti West's conclusion to the "X" trilogy is coming home. West and star Mia Goth rounded out their decades-spanning horror trilogy this year with "MaXXXine," picking up a little while after "X" left off ("Pearl" was a prequel). The film brings the action to the '80s with Goth's Maxine Minx trying to fulfill her dream of becoming a star, and naturally, things get bloody along the way. For those who may have missed the retro, murderous trip through Hollywood, fear not! You can now watch the film from the comfort of home.
A24 has released "MaXXXine" on VOD following its successful run at the box office. The movie is now available through a variety of digital retailers such as Apple TV, Google Play, Fandango at Home, and Prime Video, among others. It is currently available to rent...

“Battlestar Galactica” will not chronicle its next chapter on Peacock. A planned reboot for the classic sci-fi hit is no longer in development at the streamer, an insider close to the decision-making told TheWrap.
The project had been in development since 2019, helmed by Sam Esmail (“Mr. Robot”). It was never officially picked up to series at Peacock, and though no plot details were revealed, the show was set to be set in the same timeline as the popular 2003 series.
The news comes months after “The Sinner” EP Derek Simonds was tapped to be writer, executive producer and showrunner. The reboot will now be shopped around to other outlets by its production company, UCP, with whom Esmail has an overall deal. The project was in development with UCP, Esmail Corp and Chad Hamilton.
“Battlestar Galactica” was first introduced in the ’70s as a single-season show starring Richard Hatch, Dirk Benedict and Lorne Greene.

The return of Chicken Run after a 20-year hiatus saw viewers flock to the movie, which was crowned the most-watched streamer title in the UK last year by Ofcom’s Media Nations report.
Aardman’s sequel Dawn of the Nugget starring Bella Ramsey and Thandiwe Newton drew an average audience of 7.5 million within the first 28 days of its release, according to the regulator’s annual report. The movie was met with a warm critical reception, coming more than two decades after the 2000 original.
Chicken Run landed around 1 million more viewers than Pixar’s animated pic Elemental, which was in second place and was Disney+’s only title in the top 10.
Having generated more than £1B ($1.3B) for the first time in the UK last year, Amazon Prime Video’s sole entrant was Clarkson’s Farm, with a most-watched ep of 5.6 million. TV shows were rated via their most-watched episode rather than taking the overall series.

The Dish hears that solid six-figure offers are in from Amazon MGM and Apple (with Hathaway attached to those bids), Universal for Banks and Paramount. UTA is brokering and the auction is in the countering stage and should be wrapped up by the beginning of next week.
What is Yesteryear? Here’s the deal, from a submission to publishers that Deadline got hold of: Natalie lives a traditional lifestyle.

“Love Island USA” has hit its stride.
Season 6 of the Peacock reality dating show was the No. 1 most-watched streaming original series in the U.S. during the week of July 5-11, hitting 919.1 million minutes watched, per Luminate. While Season 6 has consistently ranked on Luminate’s charts since its debut during the June 14-20 window, this has been its biggest week by far, marking a 61% jump in viewership from the previous week and a 257% increase from its debut week. Of course, much of the increase is due to the sheer amount of content now available — 27 episodes had been released by July 11 — but it’s clear that the series’ popularity has seen solid growth over time.
The No. 2 title of the week was “The Bear” Season 3, which hit 630.7 million minutes watched in its first full week of availability on Hulu. “The Boys” Season 4 followed with 471.4 million minutes watched during this window, which...

Though they’ve worked together only once (the animated “Happy Feet”), Australian director George Miller and recent AFI Life Achievement Award winner Nicole Kidman share a distinction this week. Both of their most recent films lead on respective home viewing charts.
For Warner Bros. and Miller, the #1 status for the newly released “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is positive news after its very disappointing theatrical results. But even more than a normal high-return PVOD release, it is available for a $24.99 digital purchase price rather than the standard initial $19.99 rental.
Kidman has provided an eclectic filmography that spans from Jane Campion and Lars von Trier to “Batman Forever” and “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.” Her latest, rom-com “A Family Affair” where she credibly plays at the age of 57 the love interest for Zac Efron, testifies to a star quality along with enduring talent. Former President Barack Obama and Matt Damon had a famous back-and-forth in 2011 when they went at each other in public. Damon had supported Obama in the 2008 U.S. Presidential elections but went on to state in a 2011 interview that he was no longer a fan of him. Obama also fired back, joking that he felt the same after watching Damon’s film The Adjustment Bureau.

Before The Avengers assembled on the big screen and Spider-Man weaved his cinematic web, a fearless half-vampire hero set the stage for future superhero blockbusters with a sword-sharp edge. So can you imagine a world without Marvel’s mightiest champions? It’s hard to believe, but the MCU as we know it may never have unfolded without the groundbreaking success of Blade. With Wesley Snipes masterfully embodying the vampire slayer in 1998, the movie not only thrilled audiences globally but also set the stage for an era of superhero dominance.

Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man” is a certified hit for Netflix, and a rare one: It’s an original film that’s critically acclaimed as well as a popular success.
Meanwhile on PVOD, Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” dominated “Godzilla Minus One” (Toho) not only in theaters (more than three times the gross) but also in home interest.
“Civil War” (A24) is #1 again at iTunes in its fourth week of availability (#2 at Fandango), a remarkably strong showing for a film with a strong but sub-$70 million domestic box office take.
“Hit Man” has led Netflix’s most-watched movie list for 10 days, the first film to do so since 2023 Netflix production “Leave the World Behind” starring Julia Roberts; it held the spot for 13 days last December. We await word on actual viewing minutes, which it recently touted for “Atlas” with Jennifer Lopez. Already, “Hit Man” has more days...

Higher Ground’s recent projects with Netflix include Rustin, American Symphony, Leave the World Behind, Working: What We Do All Day and Bodkin. Rustin, a feature film that tells the...

The attendees of CAA Amplify are accustomed to an annual lineup comprising their own high-wattage, high-impact peers, but one of this year’s speakers was truly peerless.
Michelle Obama took the stage at the Ojai Valley Inn on Tuesday with Regina King for a conversation in which the former first lady reflected on her life since the White House and what she and president Barack Obama are looking to do with their production company, Higher Ground.
“What’s the format that people come together and learn? It’s movies, it’s short films, it’s stories,” said Obama, whose banner’s releases in the past year included the Jon Batiste documentary American Symphony, biopic Rustin and mystery thriller Leave the World Behind. “This is where America is, and you’ve got to meet people where they are. If Hollywood is where they are, as Barack and I think, then how...

(This Interview Contains Spoilers About The HBO Film)
For Mac Quayle, composing the score for the HBO film project “The Great Lillian Hall” proved something of a departure from his most recent projects, which have included nine seasons of the FX anthology “American Horror Story,” the Fox/ABC procedural “9-1-1” and the Netflix drama “Leave the World Behind.” “Lillian Hall” tells the story of a legendary Broadway star (Jessica Lange) fearfully facing the ticking clock of time while doggedly working to defy it following a dementia diagnosis. In talking to director Michael Cristofer about the music, “we recognized this is an intimate story about Lillian Hall and this sudden dementia that she’s experiencing,” Quayle recalls. “We thought that (when) it needed some music that it shouldn’t be too big, it needed to have a little more intimate sound. So we chose as our palette nine strings and piano,...

The streaming giant’s massive May 23 data trove for the second half of 2023 includes almost 16,000 series, movies and specials, which accounted for about 90 billion hours of viewing worldwide. The shows and movies below are … not a big part of that number, to say the least. Rather, they’re some of the higher-profile projects that, relatively speaking, almost no one watched. (For comparison’s sake, some of the biggest titles are also included).

Julia Roberts has donned quite a few iconic roles among the likes of Anna Scott in Notting Hill and Erin Brockovich in Erin Brockovich. And yet, none of her fan-favorite roles is still regarded as incredibly successful and popular as Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman.
But what many people don’t know is that she nearly lost that role right after scoring it.

Although surprising it may seem, Roberts originally bagged the role when the film was under production with a different studio and a whole other storyline.
However, within a mere three days of her getting the chance to play Ward in the iconic rom-com from 1990, the actress pretty much temporarily lost the role — that was until one producer came to the rescue: Garry Marshall.

Universal’s follow-up to the Jurassic World films is set to land some heavyweight talent in the form of Mahershala Ali.
Another big casting story has popped up for the next film in the Jurassic World saga. There’s still plenty we don’t know about this film, including the title – although Jurassic City is one name that’s been floating around.
The project is set to shoot at Sky Studios Elstree next month and unbelievably, arrive in cinemas exactly a year later. However, with production looming the project is still furiously locking down key members of its cast and if today’s story is accurate, the film has just landed another big name.
The Hollywood Reporter is claiming that Mahershala Ali is in talks to join the ensemble and add some heavyweight artistic credibility to the picture. The Moonlight actor is a two-time Oscar winner, picking up the storied...

Mahershala Ali might be paying a visit to Isla Nublar.
The Oscar-winning actor is in talks to join the new “Jurassic World” sequel, which is in development at Universal. Once he signs on the dotted line, he’ll join the already announced cast of Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Rupert Friend.
Gareth Edwards will direct the yet-to-be-titled film, written by original “Jurassic Park” screenwriter David Koepp. Universal plans to release the action-adventure in theaters on July 2, 2025.
Plot details haven’t been unveiled, but this new installment is expected to ignite a new trilogy following the three “Jurassic Park” and three “Jurassic World” films. In 2022, “Jurassic World Dominion” wrapped up the sequel trilogy with $1 billion globally.
Since Steven Spielberg brought to life the original “Jurassic Park” in 1994, the prehistoric franchise has become one of Universal’s biggest properties over the last 30 years. Beyond its box office riches, “Jurassic” has...
