The "American Music Awards 2020" are exactly what the title implies here, namely the 2020 edition of the American Music Awards, even if the quality is so low once again that I think it's worth discussing if this show should be allowed to carry the word "American" in the title any longer because what you got to see during these 125 minutes is nothing to be proud of and if i was American, then I'd be strongly hesitant and would not want this mess to represent me, my country and my country's music from any perspective. The show was pretty long by the way. The duration I just mentioned does not even include commercial breaks yet. Despite taking place during the corona pandemic, they fit in as much as they could and it is also not a virtual event. There are no less four writers. The two males, Adelman and Macks, have eighteen and eight Emmy nominations, but strangely enough, they never managed to win. The two other writers are African-American women with one nomination each and not at the Emmys, but from truly minor awards bodies and one of the two happened fifteen years ago already. Let's not get into detail why they are on board here with this relatively big and prestigious show. The director is Glenn Weiss, maybe the biggest awards show director in human history and with fourteen Emmy wins already, he's the one showing the duo of male writers how it's done. And as Weiss turns "only" 60 next year, it's probably not impossible for him to make it to 20 Emmy wins. As for the background here, there is an audience, but they made sure safety regulations are paid attention to in terms of distancing etc. Many of the winners did not show up for the ceremony, but accepted their trophies at home. But they also made sure to include those categories in the broadcast where the winners were there. Most of them. This awards show here has the same problem like many other awards shows. The awards element is completely lost and you'd think that even during corona times now they would perhaps pay more attention to people actually focusing on the awards because it is difficult to adhere to the distance and mask rules when performing, but they did care at all and showed their full incompetence. Once again, this barely felt like an awards show, but more like a concert DVD. Host Taraji P. Henson is not making things any better really. I mean the good thing is that she is evidence of how almost everybody can become an Oscar-nominated actress these days really. Nonetheless, if I remember correctly, she was still kinda better, also with role selection, in her early career years. And as a host, she was almost unwatchable anyway. So over the top, so hammy, so exaggerated that it wwas really painful to watch. Why was she even a part of this event? As far as I know she is not a renowned musician or anything. Only because of her ethnicity? I mean this show was not obviously racist like others, but if we are taking a more subtle look, there's a lot to find and this may be one aspect. I see nothing else that qualifies her honestly. Then they should have taken Janella Monaé or Cynthia Erivo for example, but I think the latter at least is not politically correct enough. Like a female Terry Crews or so. Too much truth perhaps. Anyway, good news is that at least Lady Gaga wasn't here this time. Her full dose at the MTV VMAs 2020 was still more than enough for me.

But what is there to say about this show. I mean Katy Perry was there and she took it slow this time, which surprised me a bit. Also her looks, including the chairs and the clothes she wore and those felt kinda inspired by Eilish if we compare it to what she has worn on other occasions throughout her already pretty long career now. Let's say she was one of really not many mediocre aspects from an otherwise terrible show. Does that make her a highlight? I'm hesitant to say. What I definitely want to elaborate on here, however, is the corona component. Henson said on one occasion that they care and make sure everything is correct and no regulations are broken. Well, let's see. The singers wear no masks. That would not be a problem if they kept the distance to one another. Like 1.5 meters, 2 meters, 2.5 meters whatever it is now. Not the case. We see it for example during Eilish's performance. No distance whatsoever. But it became even more blatantly obvious and hypocritical when we have one artist (I think it was Dua Lipa) accept her award in a room full of people, looked like a theater and not one is wearing a mask and they are all sitting close to each other. Or of course the prime example our Asian friends BTS (whose singing does not warrant an amateur award (but that's another story) and who are still picked as the act to close the event, which says it all) and they are also really next to each other without masks or anything. So yeah, I guess social distancing is okay for the left-wing entertainment industry in America (here represented through ABC), but only as long as you don't have to do it yourself. Strange stuff. The one thing maybe more embarrassing and pathetic than what I just mentioned was The Weeknd. First of all, I've listened to some of his stuff and never really found him particularly talented, but when he keeps showing up with his battered face on all kinds of occasions, it is just cringeworthy. It does not even matter what it is supposed to symbolize, but maybe if one day for whatever reasons he really has to suffer through terrible injuries like the ones he is pretending to have, he will not find this too funny anymore to show up on stage like a mummy. Yeah well, what else is there to say about him and this show in general."Blinded by the Lights" is so forgettable. I think the fact that his absolutely forgettable artists was one of the big winners here says it all. Just like the fact that Taylor Swift was really dominating that night too. Cringeworthy stuff. Luckily, American music is not as horrible nowadays as you could think judging from the generic winners here. It is basically all about sending the politically correct messages and the ones who do so most flawlessly and fit in with the mainstream while generating a great amount of sales (maybe the latter also as a consequence of the former) are those who get the awards. Talent or anything else that should be is not much of a factor anymore here. Sad times. But yeah, don't get distracted too much here. Just go for the stuff that is maybe ten times more difficult to find, but twenty times more quality to listen to. This is certainly not Lewis Capaldi. This is also not Megan Thee Stallion. No Nicki Minaj or Harry Styles either. Definitely no Justin Bieber. Also most likely no Shawn Mendes. Probably no Doja Cat either. No Jennifer Lopez, even if her performance was among the better that night, which honestly isn't saying much. No Jonas Brothers. No Lady Gaga. No BTS. No Cardy B. No Black Eyed Peas, no matter how desperately they are trying to stay in the spotlight. I could go on and on and on. This entire show here with almost all its nominees and winners was an abomination. Virtually no creativity and the only reason why we did not get one political message after the next here was that the 2020 presidential election was over already when this aired. The few solid winners they may have had here like Blake Shelton were simply not included during the broadcast. Not famous enough, not mainstream enough. Not generic enough. The masses could actually start thinking. Who would want that! Still somehow I find a way to end my review on a more positive note by mentioning another artist here who has been in the industry longer than most of the others from this event and I am talking about Nelly. Nice to see him once again. Good performance too, could teach these young fools a lesson for sure. And which guy really calls himself Bad Bunny, like seriously? But hey never mind. If you wanna watch this event and the likes of songs that are nothing but "yadda, yaddda, yadda", please go ahead. I've seen actual mares come up with more melodic tunes, so my preference here would be that the 2020 edition of the American Music Awards is the last one and they cancel the event for 2020 and years to come until they find at least some quality again. Or, if they really have to continue, as I suggested earlier, then at least remove the "American" from the title. And maybe the music too because it is a bit of an insult to actually talented musicians. Or even to those who may not have a lot of talent, but are hard workers. Massive thumbs-down from me for this awards show. Good this is not even a month old now, so there is still almost a year to go until the 2021 edition.Oh I almost forgot one thing. Can't believe how much I once liked Anthony Anderson looking at what he has turned into. So unfunny. Also no clue what he is doing at a music awards show honestly. So yes, what were they caring for if it wasn't the music? Well, probably the money. The first T-Mobile advertizement (as part of the show, not the actual commercials) already came 15 seconds into the broadcast. Enough said. This entire event was one single sellout. Skip at all costs.
