10- Amnesia
What’s scarier than waking up and not knowing where you are? How about not knowing where you are, who you are, and what’s trying to kill you? Welcome to Amnesia, in which you find yourself trapped in a dark castle without your memories while creatures slink about in the dark.Unlike most games, which count on players being able to fight their way out of a problem, Amnesia forces players to think their way out of tight corners. Being resourceful and clever are the keys to success in this game, and it takes more than just brute strength and rock hard abs to recover your memories. As a film, it would play on our fear of being helpless and desperate, keeping us on the edges of our seats as we try to discover the protagonist’s identity alongside him. Although being helpless isn’t exactly new...

When I reviewed the animated feature Dead Space: Downfall, I started out with some math:
(cartoon + comic + video game) x (sci-fi + horror) = (Final Girl + Dead Space) / love
That formula has not changed a bit in the interim, so I suppose you could say that I was greatly looking forward to the sequel, Dead Space: Aftermath. I suppose you could also say that I should get a haircut and while that may, in fact, be true, it has little to do with the matters at hand so you should just mind your own beeswax! But I know you're right. I do need a haircut. Earlier today I found a split end that was split in a manner that defied the very laws of nature and physics and probably time! It looked not at all unlike this 1896 drawing of a Mantis Shrimp.
By the way, don't mess with the Mantis Shrimp! They will fuck you up.

So, can Dead Space: Aftermath live up to the pretty damned good Dead Space: Downfall, or will it end up being a pointless tie-in? We'll know for sure in just a couple of weeks, but judging from this latest clip, we are pretty damned excited.

EA and Anchor Bay Entertainment are releasing another Dead Space animated movie called Dead Space: Aftermath to coincide with the release of the highly anticipated videogame, Dead Space 2. Since I know there are a ton of Dead Space fans out there I thought I'd post up the movie's trailer and a new clip that was just released today.
Synopsis:
The year is 2509. The first-responder ship Usg O'Bannon has arrived at Aegis VII, attempting to hold the planet together in the wake of the catastrophe that destroyed the Ishimura. But only four members of the O'Bannon crew have survived, and the catastrophe remains unchecked. What went wrong? What secrets do they hide? And what new threats have been revealed...in the Aftermath!
Dead Space Aftermath is a fast paced, horrifying thrill ride told through the perspective of the 4 survivors by several renowned international directors, each vision unique and bold in its own way.

Director D.J. Caruso ("Eagle Eye," "Disturbia") tells MTV News that the film adaptation of the hit sci-fi/horror video game "Dead Space" is still in the early stages.
The game is set in the 26th century in deep space, where an engineer who responds to a distress signal from a mining ship finds the vessel infested with monstrous creatures called Necromorphs. The creatures are human corpses, reanimated by an alien virus.
"We don't have a writer for it yet, but... right before I left we were listening to different writers and taking different pitches. We have to decide on a couple once we get back what we're going to do. We've tried to crack the story a few different ways, so I know when we get back we're going to get into it and I feel like we'll have a screenplay in a few months" says Caruso.

The Hollywood development process is slooooooow. A year ago we reported that DJ Caruso was attached to direct the movie adaptation of the palm-sweatingly horrifying videogame Dead Space. The news today from MTV is that it's only slightly further forward. But Caruso (Eagle Eye, I Am Number Four) does provide a couple of small updates.Dead Space, for those who've not put themselves through that particular ordeal, is a shooter game taking place on a mining ship infested by zombies ("Necromorphs", if you will). The trouble starts when something is brought onto the ship from a mysterious planet (ahem-Alien-ahem), and the game's plot-thrust sees the player piecing together what happened. In amongst the killing and being scared and having to switch off the console and make some nice calm tea. We really hope they'll build those tea-breaks into the movie.Caruso's main reveal to MTV s that the planned movie is a prequel,...

EA is never one to shy away from cross-platform expansion of their properties. Their space-horror smash Dead Space produced two games, multiple comic book series, and an animated direct-to-dvd movie. The games were gloriously gory fun and the comics, illustrated by 30 Days of Night artist Ben Templesmith, added immeasurably to the game's mythology. The less that is said about the appropriately titled animated movie Dead Space: Downfall, the better. So now that EA has another potential franchise hit on their hands with Dante's Inferno, they're doing it all over again. Aside from the infamous pre-release bidding war over the movie rights, they're again producing a series of comic books,...

Dramatically over the top yet visually cool, here's the trailer for the upcoming animated feature Dante's Inferno from Starz. Like last year's Dead Space: Downfall , this film serves as a companion piece to Electronic Arts' upcoming video game, itself inspired by Dante Alighieri's "The Divine Comedy." Packed with carnage and brimming with bloodshed, Dante's Inferno follows one man's descent into hell. Apparently, Starz has enlisted a series of directors (behind other animated films like Ghost in the Shell and Blood: The Last Vampire ) to helm different segments as the film's protagonist ventures from one circle of hell to the next. Look for the DVD and Blu-Ray in February.

Electronic Arts' survival horror science fiction video game Dead Space is being adapted into a movie. Released in the fall of 2008, the console game drew rave reviews and solid sales for its scares and shocks aboard a deep space mining ship infested with transformed human corpses out to add you to their number. The video game publisher is taking an active role with the project and acting as an active producer on it, a path that they are also taking with the movie based on their upcoming Dante's Inferno game.
EA has partnered with film producers Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey (Twilight, The Nativity Story) to develop the Dead Space film. Together the trio have attracted the interest of director D.J. Caruso (Eagle Eye, Disturbia) and have attached him to their project. The movie is only now taking pitches from screenwriters and once that component of the creative team has been selected,...

DJ Caruso, director of Disturbia and Eagle Eye (and currently reported to be working on Y: The Last Man) has signed on to direct a movie of the EA sci-fi zombie horror videogame Dead Space, according to Variety.Dead Space takes place on a mining ship infested by reanimated human corpses called Necromorphs. It's a third-person shooter using that over-the-shoulder perspective seen in the likes of Resident Evil 4 and 5 and Gears of War. Its Alien-like plot hook is that the zombifications began when something was brought back to the ship from an off-limits planet. But the game is much more like Paul Ws Anderson's Event Horizon, with the artefact triggering violent hysteria among the ship's crew, and the player piecing this back-story together through the discovery of ship logs and audio recordings. An animated prequel to the game, Dead Space: Downfall, was released to DVD last year. A game sequel,...

An unexpected attraction at Comic-Con – Microsoft are apparently set to unveil a new project fleshing out the backstory of their hugely successful Halo franchise… seven short films by acclaimed anime directors. An article from the La Times looks at two studios who want to exercise increased control over ancilliary spinoffs from their successful IPs – as opposed to letting movie studios take the brand name and run. (Ubisoft are also premiering three short films expanding on the backstory to the upcoming Assassin’s Creed 2). The five studios contributing to Halo: Legends are Bones, Casio Entertainment, Production I.G., Studio 4C, and Toei Animation, with previews on Microsoft’s Xbox Live service this autumn and a DVD/BluRay release in 2010. Personally? The only downside from my point of view is placing Shinji Aramaki in charge – a fan he may be, but after the creatively bankrupt Appleseed I hope he remains relatively hands-off.

Just a few weeks after reporting that Universal will be giving Dante Alighieri's epic poem the live action treatment, news has now reached the trades that Dante's Inferno will also be getting the anime treatment!
Electronic Arts and Starz Media have teamed to produce their second animated feature, which will be based on the EA Game "Dante's Inferno." Film Roman, a subsidiary of Starz will produce the film, as it did with "Dead Space: Downfall," which was distribbed by Starz in the fall and was tied to the release of EA's high-profile sci-fi horror vidgame "Dead Space."
And to give each of the nine circles of hell (limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, anger, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery) their full charm, separate anime studios are being commissioned to create each one.
The game and the anime are both based on part one of Dante's classic poem "The Divine Comedy," better known as "Dante's Inferno.

Electronic Arts is partnering back up with Film Roman, the folks behind Dead Space: Downfall, to deliver a similar treatment for their upcoming gaming title Dante's Inferno. Little was revealed about the upcoming direct-to-dvd animated feature, except that it would ship simultaneously with the game that it's based on in 2010. The game follows Dante, now a vengeful warrior instead of a philosophical poet, as he cuts a bloody swath through all the circles of Hell in search of his lost love. Interestingly, different anime studios are being tapped for each of the nine levels of Hell, which implies that the title will have more in common with The Animatrix and Batman: Gotham Knight than Downfall. ...

Electronic Arts and Starz Media are prepping an animated feature based on the upcoming Dante's Inferno video game. The two previously worked on Dead Space: Downfall which hit DVD last fall. That, too, was tied into an EA video game. Film Roman's Joe Goyette ( Dead Space: Downfall ) will produce with Victor Cook ( Hellboy Animated: Blood & Iron ) directing from a script by Brandon Auman ( Iron Man: Armored Adventures ). Inferno will mirror the game's plot and follow Dante's journey through the nine circles of Hell - limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, anger, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery - in search of his true love, Beatrice. Naturally, the video game, animated feature and feature film ( now in the works ) are derived from Dante's classic poem. Anchor Bay...

Following the multimedia model that made Dead Space such a success, Electronics Arts has once again joined with Starz and Anchor Bay to distribute an animated feature based upon the upcoming video game Dante's Inferno.
In the wake of the news of the just announced movie tie-in, Variety confirmed today that Film Roman's Joe Goyette (Dead Space: Downfall) is the producer on the project, which Victor Cook (Hellboy Animated: Blood & Iron) is directing and Brandon Auman (Iron Man: Armored Adventures) is writing.
"The animated feature will be a great companion piece to the game," Jonathan Knight, executive producer and creative director for Dante's Inferno, tells Variety. "The feature will explore aspects of the poem that the game does not, and will provide more insight into the characters and the unique story adaptation that the game has established."
Look for Dante's Inferno on the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 next year.

Electronic Arts and Starz Media are joining forces to produce an animated DVD feature based on Dante's Inferno, the videogame that arrives next year. Universal is currently developing a big screen live action flick based on the same game. Inferno will mirror the game's plot and follow Dante's journey through the nine circles of Hell -- limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, anger, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery -- in search of his true love, Beatrice. Both are based on part one of Dante's classic poem The Divine Comedy, better known as Dante's Inferno. Victor Cook (The Spectacular Spider-Man, Hellboy Animated: Blood & Iron) is directing and Brandon Auman (Iron Man: Armored Adventures) is writing. Just a couple of weeks after it was announced that Universal would be turning the upcoming Electronic Arts video game Dante’S Inferno into a feature film, now Variety reports that Starz Media will produce an animated Inferno movie through its Film Roman division. Anchor Bay will release it on DVD.
The project reps a reunion of Starz/Film Roman/Anchor Bay, EA and producer Joe Goyette from last year’s game tie-in flick Dead Space: Downfall. Dante’S Inferno will be directed by Victor Cook, who helmed Anchor Bay’s Hellboy Animated: Blood And Iron, from a script by Iron Man: Armored Adventures’ Brandon Auman. Like the game, it will follow the titular hero as he ventures through the nine circles of hell in a quest to rescue his true love, Beatrice.

Burn After Reading . 2.5 stars . Starting out with a new studio release, the Coen Brothers set their ridiculous farce in the world of uber serious CIA movies. So the crisp locations may have muted colors but that.s the Jason Bourne/Jack Ryan world they.re doing. There may be some grain in some scenes but it contributes to the sense of a world so full of itself, it is heightened to the point that every pixel of the world is brought into focus.
Dead Space: Downfall . 3 stars . The Dead Space video game isn.t really on my radar and I.m not into anime, but I can appreciate the hi-def presentation of this film. The solid colors represent faithfully. The aesthetic isn.t necessarily bright, but you can see the distinctions in beiges and grays. Backgrounds offer some sharper detail and spaceships cut nice figures in...

The survival-horror division of the video-game scene has become fairly cluttered these days, making it difficult for creators to offer up anything fresh and exciting. Dead Space, Electronic Arts’ latest attempt at the genre, is one that succeeds; rather than have you fight its creatures on familiar Earthly turf, Dead Space takes the battle to the stars.
Earlier this year, a comic-book series was released which revealed the events leading up to the game scenario, and further exploring that backstory is Dead Space: Downfall (out this week on DVD and Blu-ray from Anchor Bay). This feature-length adventure begins with the discovery of an ancient artifact on an alien world by a team of “planet crackers”—miners who destroy planets in order to obtain their valuable resources. In the process of mining their latest discovery, they remove the totem and bring it aboard the Usg Ishimura.
It’s soon discovered, however,...
