Curious about the orb you're living on? Our Planet is a 3-disc DVD collection that comprises of three separate feature-length History Channel specials. Though different in topics, the three are collected together because each documentary represents Past, Present or Future of Earth. It's on shelves now, but we've got two copies to giveaway - so if you want to win, just keep reading to find out how.
How the Earth Was Made: History goes back in time, from 4.5 billion years ago to today, to reveal the mystery of geology across the world. Next up is A Global Warning? Arctic ice is melting, sea levels are rising, glaciers are shrinking at alarming rates, and the Earth is getting unmistakably warmer. Is this vast, potentially catastrophic, climate change the result of human behavior? Then there's Life After People. What would happen if every human being on Earth disappeared? This isn’t...

Though different in topics, the three are collected together because each documentary represents Past, Present or Future of Earth. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that the present and the future are also considered history by this ever-expanding cable channel.
How the Earth was Made gives us a history of Earth’s past: a CGI-assisted visualization of the billions of years it took for an unlivable terrain to become the rock we live on today. This is the original doc that predates the more in-depth television series, focusing on the timeline rather than specific geological features.
A Global Warning? focuses on, you’ve guessed it, climate change. It actually offers a lot of information already mentioned in How the Earth was Made (hey, that’s history!), but using them in the context of showing Earth...

127 Hours (20th Century Fox) Harrowing true story of Aron Ralston (James Franco, in another fine turn), an extreme outdoorsman who finds himself trapped in a remote Utah canyon, his arm pinned between two boulders, with no help nearby, no communication to the outside world, and dim prospects for survival, to say the least. Director Danny Boyle manages to prove again that he’s one of the finest filmmakers working today by making a subject that is seemingly uncinematic a true example of pure cinema. Inventive, breathtaking, funny, and horrifying, often all at once. Amber Tamblyn and Kate Mara make a memorable, brief appearance as hikers who connect with Ralston during his journey. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary by Boyle, producer Christian Colson, co-writer Simon Beaufoy; Deleted scenes; Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.

Looking for a story to inspire you? On February 1st, Fox releases Conviction on DVD and Blu-ray. The film tells the story of a woman going above and beyond to defend her brother by getting her law degree. Love-based legal action. It's heartwarming. Truly. To keep your heart warm or to help thaw it out of its icy encasement, we're giving away three copies of Conviction. Want to win? Keep reading to find out how.
Without a dime but armed with a strong will and an unwavering devotion, this high-school drop-out and working mother (Swank) earns her high school diploma and puts herself through law school in an effort to represent her brother (Sam Rockwell) and set the record straight. Convicted of murder, he has exhausted his chances to appeal his conviction through public defenders and needs a miracle.
For a chance to win, you just have to do two things.

Sorry, Creationists - you might want to sit this round out. History's ongoing series How the Earth Was Made covers the gradual formation of the planet Earth's topography and its evolution over time. The show goes back in history – from 4.5 billion years ago to today – peeling back layers of rock, filling up river canyons, parting the oceans, and leveling mountains and volcanoes to investigate the origins of some of the most well-known locations and geological phenomena in the world. With rocks as their clues and volcanoes, ice sheets and colliding continents as their suspects, scientists launch a forensic investigation that will help viewers visualize how the Earth has evolved and formed over millions of years.

Forgoing the seven days creation theory of Genesis, How the Earth was Made uses CGI to recreate the eons of world-building that made this orb you call home so habitable. JustPressPlay is giving one lucky reader a copy, and to make it possible for that lucky reader to be you, you just have to do two things. Read on for details.

Astronomy 101 was one of my favorite classes freshman year of college. Fully understanding that I was just one of six billion flesh sacks scuttling across a small rock orbiting a medium sized star on the outskirts of one of millions of galaxies expanding infinitely outward was incredible. Though it fills Alfie in Annie Hall with dread, this realization gave me a joyous freedom that is hard to describe. Earth and Space does its best to keep you from any embarrassing college-freshman existential revelations, although it will function as the informational equivalent of Astro 101 and Geology 101.

An absolute must for any geology buff, and certainly worth a look for anyone with a passing interest in physical science, How The Earth Was Made offers a sprawling, detailed survey of our planet’s most enigmatic features in an attempt to understand their part in Earth’s natural evolution and speculate upon the role they might play in our ultimate fate.
Natural history in every sense of the term, the series each week focuses on a unique geological phenomenon and dissects its origins, formation, evolution, and tracks its cycles in an attempt to determine what it will do next. From asteroids arriving from space to the deepest part of our planet’s oceans, no stone is left unturned, so-to-speak, as skilled experts and simple graphics are employed to explain and to illustrate the almost incalculable energy that is built up, transferred, and exchanged every second beneath the Earth’s crust.

In many ways, the History Channel has moved away from history programs with reality shows like Ice Road Truckers. How the Earth Was Made is a return to the channel’s roots, but for that reason, I do not believe that How the Earth Was Made will perform very well on DVD.
How the Earth Was Made focuses its energy mainly on geology, and the second season’s topics range from the Grand Canyon to the Sahara Desert and the beginning of the world. They combine computer-generated simulations with accounts by top scientists, experiments, and video footage of the episode’s subjects.
Some of the best episodes of the season were ones that had the human angle. In “Mount St. Helen,” they showed the scientists who were studying the volcano when it erupted, and I was intrigued by the impact of the eruption and worried for the scientists. When the...

I once had a job where it was my job to obtain truck freight.
As I made my way all across the Us I realized that everything that we get in this country is obtained by the trucking industry. Bottom line. From the keyboards that you and I write on, the chairs we sit in, the produce and food we eat, the clothes we wear, everything gets here by truck.
That’s why knowing this information makes for a good primer in understanding why Season Three of Ice Road Truckers is such a thrill to watch. While not necessarily family entertainment, some of these road dogs are a bit salty, the program continues to feed my...

Wow! There's not too much coming out on DVD this week but I grabbed a few to highlight for you all. There may only be a few but they are good ones in my opinion.
Hot Tub Time Machine
Fueled by energy drinks, vodka and nostalgia for their younger, wilder days, a group of aging best friends travels back in time to 1987, where they get the chance to relive the best year of their lives. And their time machine? Well, it's a hot tub. John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, Clark Duke, Crispin Glover and Sebastian Stan co-star in this out-of-the-box comedy that takes time travel to a whole new level.
Starring: John Cusack, Craig Robinson
Director: Steve Pink
This movie is awesome! To be fair I think the older you are the more awesome it becomes. There's so many great flashbacks to the 80's and the soundtrack is amazing!

Nancy Dubuc has been tapped as president and general manager of Lifetime Networks and will also continue her tenure as president and general manager of History brands. The appointment, effective May 1, was made Tuesday by AETN president-ceo Abbe Raven, to whom Dubuc will report.
"Nancy is one of the most dynamic executives working in television. Her track record of success by focusing on a brand's target audience and creating programming for them is extraordinary," Raven said. "Nancy has great respect for the power of the Lifetime brand and I am confident she will lead the terrific team there to new heights."
In her new role, Dubuc will be responsible for the Lifetime and History brands' strategic planning, programming, consumer marketing, publicity and brand development. She replaces Andrea Wong, who left Lifetime in February in the wake of the consolidation between that cabler and A&E.

When they say the Universe they aren't kidding. This massive 14 disc set contains the History Channels The Universe Season One, Season Two, The Planets and How The Earth Was Made plus two bonus documentaries Inside The Volcano, and Beyond The Big Bang. Add on a bunch of featurettes and additional footage and you have one stellar package. What i want to know is why the history chanel has never done a program on why theories are presented this way in the first place. What is it about saying "we just don't know" that freaks us out so badly. I could stomach the whole History Channel approach better if their scientific stuff tackled the tension between the quantifiable and the unquantifiable a little more effectively. Still I wouldn't have passed this monster up on a long shot.

What made the comedy of Spinal Tap and A Mighty Wind work so well was the actual musicianship of its principal trio, who’ve decided to take center stage as themselves for Unwigged & Unplugged: An Evening With Christopher Guest, Michael McKean & Harry Shearer (Courgette Records, Not Rated, DVD-$15.97 Srp), a must-have concert DVD that is exactly what it says on the tin.

Item #1 - How The Earth Was Made
I really was a bad student in high school. Not horrible in the classical sense but I was absolutely a C student and I couldn’t grasp mathematical or scientific in ways that made me wonder if I was functionally retarded.
Smash cut to college and one of the very first classes I took my first semester was Geology 101. Kid you not, it was really brutal. Theories on geological formations, how earth’s natural functioning is a result from eons of slow and steady processes, why Illinois is so damn flat (glaciers!
