This documentary short is not as ambitious . . .

. . . as its title might suggest. No on is seen on-camera, as a single anonymous male narrator tries to shoehorn five of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection Volume 5 (a.k.a., the LT Spotlight Collection Vol. 5) animated shorts into a fairy tale "schema" Dreamt up by some dude named Joseph Campbell. The five not-quite exemplary cartoons drawn on here are THE BEARS' TALE (1940), GOLDIMOUSE AND THE THREE CATS (1960), TWEETY AND THE BEANSTALK (1957), LITTLE RED RIDING HOODWINKED (1955), and TOM THUMB IN TROUBLE (1940). As much as I hate to break it to Mr. Narrator, this last short--TOM THUMB IN TROUBLE--fits Mr. Campbell's mold no better than the first four Looney Tunes examined and rejected, because even IF you accept the story's nameless yellow bird as "The Hero," (a dubious supposition at best), sleeping in a lumberjack's beard in an alien enclosed environment hardly constitutes Campbell's Fifth Dictum, "a return to (the bird's!) ordinary world." Since the five 'Toons highlighted here do not qualify as top-notch Warner Bros. material (with the possible exception of HOODWINKED), this so-called "guide" would be more accurately titled A LAME EFFORT TO STRETCH A PALTRY PARADIGM FOR TEN MINUTES.
