Not as bad as the sorry reviews suggest
shobbs-8608129 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Maybe some reviewers were ticked off because their "Hallmark expectations" weren't met? Or maybe a confusing opening scene suggested a crazy ending where everyone got what they really wanted and no one was hurt or upset... just a fun movie if you didn't need to have some kind of moral platitude confirmed in your lead actress... script wasn't terrible; actors did a decent job; and this deserves better ratings!

Okay Movie
pattersonjamie-120799 August 2020
Movie was slow. If it hadn't had Cindy Busby, I would have given up. The story was okay and the scenery was awesome.

Cindy Busby's usually perky, but this movie is a turkey.
david-thor3 August 2020
I always said I'd never rate a Hallmark movie below a 5 because they're family-friendly, but this should have premiered at Thanksgiving because it's a turkey. Cindy Busby spends most of her time pretending to care about a cast of near-cardboard cutouts and a stupefying soundtrack, which is a shame because she's carried movies before and during her time at Hallmark. If the movie was trimmed to about thirty minutes, it might have moved at a more realistic pace and the writers might have been inspired enough to give their actors something to do.

Romance in the Air
studioAT8 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
People are too picky!

So what this was filmed during the pandemic? So what if the cast is small and the green screen work isn't the best?

I thought this was great, and good natured fun. With some of the channel's bigger name stars jumping ship maybe it's a good chance for the ever lovely Cindy Busby to be given more chances to shine.

Lovely stuff.

Some hot air moments
MickyG33321 June 2023
6.4 stars.

I am not particularly sure about this movie, it has a lot of wonky and awkward moments. It's hard to get invested into the drama because there is an extreme lack of flow. The acting is forced. The chemistry is almost nonexistent, the cast are decent although I'm not sure what to think about the relationship that is starting to form, because it's so darned clumsy. It is pretty obvious that the actors are trying their best to work with a deficient script, zero direction, and bad dialogue. In my opinion, the timing is way off and the whole experience is subpar. Attribute the whole thing to lack of experience from the Director. If you like, BUSBY stick with it because she's pretty, but she can only do so much... Otherwise don't waste your time.

What in the holy hot air ballon mess is this??
jimbojim-037392 August 2020
This was painful to watch! The absolute worst script! The actors were struggling to fill in time with utter nonsense! The lead actor looked nervous and wooden not knowing what to do next! I felt the entire cast was just not into it. The ending was a complete mess that truly defied a relationship breakup! Come on Hallmark, the formula is getting old real fast! Time to start really examining scripts and cast before production begins! Boring and juvenile!

Yup. It's bad.
mikemckiernan2 August 2020
If it wasn't for the local scenery of Lake Tahoe, I wouldn't have watched the whole movie (and I would have given it one star). The main actress is actually good, but she's a victim of a terrible script, dialogue and her fellow actors who need to take more acting lessons. And the breakup (to the old boyfriend - not a spoiler, it's a Hallmark staple) at the end is laughable. I don't expect a lot from Hallmark, but, wow this one is bad. Recommended for Tahoe fans only.

Not much romance in the air
TheLittleSongbird17 March 2022
'Romance in the Air' is the first film of the 2020 Hallmark Summer Nights group. Expectations were not high to be perfectly honest. There are some good and more films Hallmark did in 2020, in most of the seasonal programmings. What lowered my expectations was that there was absolutely nothing special about the premise and also because of not being the biggest of fans of Cindy Busby, whose acting range has often struck me as rather limited.

Those not so high expectations for 'Romance in the Air' were executed even worse in my view. Not only one of the worst 2020 Summer Nights films, but also one of the worst Hallmark films from that year. And the worst Hallmark films from 2020 were close to dire. One knows something is not right when Busby is one of the two least bad things about a film, because she actually comes off quite acceptably here. Certainly compared to everything else.

As said, Busby comes off well. She here shows more emotional range than she tends to and although her character is quite more of the same when comparing her with her other Hallmark characters she does try to bring some variation. She has a perkiness that is not there with any of the rest of the cast and the only one who seemed to be going.

What also came over well was the beautiful scenery.

It is a shame though that that was cheapened by the drab filming and the amateurish overuse of green screen, which often looks cheap when used in film and it is just too glaringly obvious here. The rest of the cast are poor, the supporting actors go through the motions (especially the bored looking and sounding ex) and Torrance Coombs is ill at ease and seemed to have no idea what he was doing. He and Busby have no chemistry here and don't look comfortable with each other, it's not a good sign when it comes over like they didn't like each other when they are supposed to be having a romance. Which is underdeveloped and rushed.

Direction is near-non descript and the same goes for the story. Which is wafer thin and what there is is excessively predictable (even for a film with so many recycled Hallmark film tropes) and sluggishly paced, complete with no heart or charm. It also seemed to take itself too seriously. The ending makes little sense and is mean spirited. The script is too talky and stilted, some of the talk unnecessary, while there is nothing interesting or likeable about the characters. The music has no personality and intrudes too much.

Concluding, very, very bad. 2/10.

Surprised I liked it!
hallmarkmov1 June 2021
I don't normally like movies with this main actress, I find her annoying and bratty, but it worked well in this movie. First off, someone is finally fearing they will be fired from a job rather than getting a huge promotion and going on mandatory vacation. The hot air balloon was beautiful, backgrounds were breathtaking, and the two leads have chemistry. I'm not sure what time of the year it was when it was filmed as they seemed to avoid touching the water at all costs but the scenery was so lovely I wish I could go there. Enjoyed the movie- give it a try!

As Bad As It Gets
jroyals-043412 August 2020
This was absolutely horrendous. The lead actor works as a hot-air balloonist? The sets appeared to be bargain basement and the dialogue was absurd. This was a sad start to the summer nights of Hallmark.

It's not the script
Northener7 August 2020
Nor is it the two leads. The script, while not great, has a lot of the usual Hallmark/ romance tropes. Cindy has done quite a few movies for Hallmark, and Torrance does period pieces for crying out loud. So why is it so bad? The production. This is just another really low budget job out of Utah. Don't believe me, check out the director's credits. He's done a few of these non-Hallmark films. I usually see these films on other channels, and quickly change the channel. Even with different directors and producers they all have bad cinematography, 2-3 local hires (are they even actors?) and the same canned music that plays on no matter what is happening in the scene.

This is clearly an acquisition that Hallmark would not have made if not for the shut down of their own productions. I find it funny that alot of times people complain about most of their stuff being filmed in Canada. Well that's because they have higher production values for a lower price. Same as the ones filmed in Georgia. This odd film is what you get for cheap in Utah, and I can't believe they get any money for these things.

Left Me in the Air
omijer2 August 2020
A new Saturday night Hallmark romance is always an anticipated joy. Sadly, this film did not live up to that anticipation. While the lead actress struggled valiantly to do something evocative with the weak and predictable script, her efforts were futile. Cindy Busby is always the energetic, expressive lead actress one counts on . She has a dazzling smile, sparkling eyes and a true sense of the role she is in. This script did not give her enough to work with , and her gifts were sorely wasted. To her credit, this is the first movie this viewer has ever seen on Hallmark where the lead actress is in a bathing suit. Not only is she in a bathing suit, but she looks perfectly comfortable in it. She is also viewed in a bikini bathing suit "bottom" that is the most audacious wardrobe risk Hallmark has ever taken. Good for Cindy Busby ! How innovative and courageous of her to accept these wardrobe demands. Her leading man was a mystery. Not being familiar with any of his previous work he was new to this viewer. What was wrong with his uncombed hair? Could a wardrobe/makeup staff member not have brushed his straggling hair off his forehead and given him a cleaner appearance?

With very little script and plot to work with, and with the story line being the most familiar Hallmark theme, the real star of this movie was Lake Tahoe. Stunning and thrilling to look at and a good distraction from a predictable and unoriginal story.

Romance in a hot air balloon
alexgibbsa30 December 2021
I really loved this movie. I liked that they were childhood Sumner friends. Who see each other after along time of her not going to her families/grandparents summer cabin. And this is a great Summer movie that every family should sit down together and watch it.

LAUGHABLY BAD
linda-plant22 August 2020
For a start there were just 3 and a half characters, and I cant believe they still aren't at drama school ! How on earth did they get a part in a film. Wooden, doesn't begin to cover it. Although the lead actress had some life in her.

The 'friend' recited her lines as though she were reading from a book. Although the scriptwriters at Hallmark always give 'the friend' the same dialogue to speak ! and its just one topic - 'feelings'. Anyone who can write their name could come up with a better script.

Now we come to Torrance Coombs- Riley. Words fail me. No interaction, said his words like a robot, barely moved, no emotion. What WAS the Director thinking ? well, he should sack the Casting Director for a start !

In essence it was a waste of 2 hours, and I normally enjoy Hallmark. The 3 main characters were constantly on screen, and I soon lost the will to live. But honestly this company needs to get a handle on the quality of the actors they employ. Here in the UK our local amateur drama groups have thespians who could show this lot what acting is all about.

Lost 2 hours of my life
boxsterpro-547602 August 2020
First. How could you just be at Emerald Bay and then Sand Harbor just to hang out. It's at least 50 minutes between places. And the lovely street that the balloon shop is at. Park City Utah???!?? And how many characters repeating the same type lines. Wow. Horrible green screen effects. The locals at Tahoe are.. WTF?? I would rather watch Golden Girls than this again.

Zero Chemistry
alannanicole-4314828 August 2020
I don't watch these Hallmark movies for the stellar acting or the unique stories or even the excellent scripts. But I do expect to actually believe that the leads LIKE each other. These two had absolutely ZERO chemistry. It was like watching two wooden puppets interact with each other. Absolutely terrible movie. After less than half way through, I distracted myself with other things and this boring movie simply became background noise. Otherwise I would have just shut it off. Pass this one by.

Worst script of a Hallmark film ever
weifmly21 March 2021
I hope the writer of this movie doesn't read this, but IMO it was the worst Hallmark script ever. Literally nothing went on the entire movie so each scene was them saying the same things over and over: Would she stay at her job or not? How did she feel about her job? Did she love marketing? And then she would answer both yes and no over and over. It was PAINFUL to watch. Also, there was absolutely no chemistry between the two leads. And there were no scenes where there was even the opportunity to build the chemistry. So little romantic tension that, for the first time ever watching a Hallmark movie, I was thinking she should just stay with her first boyfriend! The only reasons I finished watching it were because I like Cindy Busby (she looked uncomfortable the whole movie, poor thing) and because the scenery was beautiful. Oh, and well I kept thinking it had to get better because it could not stay this bad. But it did. Just really, really disappointing.

Love these lockdown-filmed movies
SunnyDaise17 May 2021
I really enjoy the smaller casts in these lockdown-filmed shows. I'm not used to being in big groups anymore, so it's nice to have movies without crowded scenes. This Hallmark production isn't quite as deep as the similar Stranded In Paradise, but lots of us have tough work/life decisions to make right now so surely many viewers would relate.

Great scenery, terrible script
Chuck-15815 June 2021
Script was riddled with filler the director had to work around. Could have been 20 minutes shorter. Good acting, but nothing could overcome the terrible script. The writer must have been somebody's relative.

Very disappointing
Jackbv1233 August 2020
Some of the views are great. Makes me want to see them live. That's the only good thing I can say about this movie.

The script was terrible. For one thing, it was mostly the same old plot lines rehashed. The minor details that deviated from the formula were lame.

None of the acting was good. I saw no chemistry between the leads. The rival male was milk toast and lacked conviction in delivering lines. Even the lead male lacked much spark. It didn't even seem Cindy Busby was invested in it. Ironic that the main plot point was not having any passion for her product. Al Lampkin was at best distracting.

Oh, by the way, that's life. It is absolutely wonderful when you love your job, but it's not easy to find those jobs. And you can't make a living as the marketing agent for a hot-air balloon tour company.

As for production - some of the green screen shots were obvious.

Disappointed
tylsix11 August 2020
This was slow and a hard watch. Riley started out looking sort of homeless and in dire need of a haircut. I kept waiting for him to show up in decent clothes and a cleaner look but it never happened. It ended in the usual boy gets the girl fashion but no real fireworks.

The Worst
amj202014 August 2020
I've been watching Hallmark movies for years and I the formula is so simplistic. Girl ur guy returns home and their current partner works too hard and ignores them. They reconnect with an old friend/lover or new friend. Sparks fly and they dump their partner. The actors were ridiculous, the dialogue ridiculous and the green screen a joke. Hallmark can't afford aerial cameras? Don't get me started on the actresses bathing suits and clothes. Outdated and ugly! I'm at the point that I can only watch Hallmark movies and mystery's because they're well acted, the scripts are top notch and the story is engaging.

Very sweet
lgander418 August 2020
I noticed that most reviews are negative and critical so I decided to say I liked this story a lot. It's romantic and low key, a pleasant change from today's hysterical screaming people one has to tolerate in movies and in real life! Thank you Hallmark!
