Who killed a fifteen year old surfer?
Tweekums25 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Then the body of a fifteen year old Christine Tanner is found dead on a Californian beach one might be excused for thinking it was just a tragic surfing action but it very soon becomes apparent that she had been murdered. A father, a single parent with two other children, tells the CBI that she had been through rough patches but that her new group of friends had got her on the straight and narrow. As well as children her own age she hung out with an older surfer, who had a record for assault, and there are rumours that she was sexually involved with an older man known only as 'Pops'. As the investigation continues a body is discovered at a building site owned by the wealthy father of one of her friends… Could he be 'Pops' and did he kill Christine?

This was another fun episode. The case itself does have dark elements obviously, most notably the murder of a fifteen year old and the suggestion that she was sexually involved with an adult. This is balanced by lighter moments; mostly provided by Jane. These include some rather bizarre questions that he asks Christine's friends and a particularly funny scene where he sits on the beach making a sand castle that dwarfs the one made my a nearby child! Simon Baker continues to impress as Jane; a character that is a lot of fun to watch but one imagines would be infuriating in real life! The rest of the cast impress too even if they are somewhat overshadowed. When the case is resolved the outcome is not obvious beforehand but it isn't far-fetched either… overall another really enjoyable episode.

The Surfers

When the body of a teenage girl is brought to the beach by the tide, the CBI team is assigned to investigate the case. They initially believe her surfboard has hit her head but soon they discover she was murdered. The girl is identified, and Patrick Jane befriends four friends of her that disclose she was having an affair with an old man that she used to call pops. Soon the father of one of her friends, Dane Kurtik, who is a powerful constructor, is included in the list of suspects with the four surfers after discovering the corpse of a security guard in the construction site. Jane uses all his abilities to uncover a series of lies behind the deaths.

"Red Tide" is the third episode of "The Mentalist" where Patrick Jane shows why CBI hired him. His ability to see the unseen and to solve cases is amazing. My vote is seven.

The first episode of this show that I liked
jtnunley13 April 2022
The pilot's a wash overall, and the second episode doesn't really do anything new. This episode is the one that got me hooked. The characters really come out in full force here, and the surfer plotline really resonated with me.

Not the best episode ever but certainly a bit underrated amongst the first 10 episodes.

Okay, ...

Warning: Spoilers
**SPOILERS** One problem I occasionally have with this show is the short shrift they give minor characters. It seems like they just dismissed Flipper as a stoned out almost pedophile. The main complaint against him was that he popped his girlfriend for dumping crankcase oil into a storm sewer drain. In California, they take the environment VERY seriously, and he may actually been a local hero for what he did. I actually wrote a short-short story to give some backstory to this guy.

Next, we have Patrick Jane building a sand castle that could have won competitions after borrowing a small bucket from a cute little girl. The look on her face was priceless "You didn't bring a bucket?" In fact people use starch, school glue, and all kinds of tools to get a result like his. HERS was believable.

I loved the way he predicted what would happen, and the way he trapped the killers. What if one of them wasn't real happy with what had happened? what if he, or she, had gone to their dad/mom and gotten a lawyer; turned state's evidence, secured immunity, and slid on the end result? These kids were rich, they might have swung it. The crummy child molester? He should swing, too.
