- The team suspects that a member of an affluent community is responsible for the disappearance of a young woman.
- To his Sarasota Florida neighbors, William Harris is a model family man and upstanding citizen. However, he is taken into custody on suspicions of being the murderer of young women, accusations which followed him from Atlanta, where his family was forced to moved from because of the previous accusations. Harris denies any involvement and is confident that his wife can (and will) post the $5 million bail as she does not believe he had anything to do with the murders. The victims are held for two days before they are strangled to death. The victims are also alternately a white woman then a black woman. The latest possible victim is Missy Dewalt, who has been missing for a few hours. However, her dead body is found within the day, the time of death being when Harris was in custody. Based on a secret blog found deleted from Harris' computer and Missy's death, the BAU are certain that Harris is the murderer but has an accomplice. Harris' daughter, Andrea, grows suspicious of his involvement in the murders and sees the signs provided to her by the BAU of her father's possible accomplice.—Huggo
- The BAU arrest a man suspected of being a serial murder-rapist and question him. While they do so, however, a girl he supposedly kidnapped is found recently dead, leading the BAU to the conclusion that their suspect has a partner whom they must trick into exposing himself.—J. Rieper
- SARASOTA, FLORIDA. Happy, beautiful people walk the green grounds of the town. A father and daughter --William and Andrea Harris -- get into the car for a Sunday afternoon driving lesson. "When you've gotten your license, this little beauty is all yours," William says. His little girl is overjoyed!
But not for long. The cops suddenly pull out front of the Harris household. "William Harris, you are under arrest for the kidnapping and murder of three women!" Detective Linden barks. Andrea and her mother, Sharon, watch in horror. "It's a mistake!" William cries.
Just then, Hotch pulls up to the scene. He admonishes the cop for arresting William. Turns out a girl is missing and Hotch is positive she will not be found inside the Harris house. Worse, Derek explains that while William fits the profile, they don't yet have enough evidence to make a case. The good news: "He holds his victims for two days before he kills them. Missy disappeared yesterday. So as long as he stays in custody, there's a good chance she could still be alive." That won't be easy, though, as the suspect is a successful litigator. Then again, it's never easy for the BAU team.
One super-exciting credits sequence later, Derek and Rossi question Harris about the murders. Three dead girls. One still missing. Derek brings up Harris' history. He was apparently brought up on rape charges in Atlanta. "Those charges were dropped," William says. "It was a mistake." Dropped only because the two girls refused to testify, Rossi points out. Not surprisingly, William claims not to know anything about the killings.
Hotch and Emily, in the meantime, question Sharon. She vigorously defends her hubby, saying the rape accusations are as ridiculous as these current charges. "Mrs. Harris, you can save Missy Dewalt's life," Hotch pleads. Sharon storms out. Later, Garcia finds an online diary on William's hard drive. The problem: It's written in some kind of code. The solution: Reid. The crime-solving phenom gets to work and discovers the diary is written in two distinct dialects. One would seem to come from central Ohio (William grew up in Columbus); the other from Florida. So what gives? Detective Linden enters. "We found Missy," he says. Ah, but in what condition?
In a dead one, it turns out. The girl's body has been dumped by the side of a reservoir. Rossi doesn't think the team has the wrong man, however. "He's communicating with someone," Rossi says. Probably through the online diary. Growls Hotch: "He has a partner." It gets worse. "The partner is a biter," Emily says. "We found marks." Yikes. Back at police headquarters, Garcia starts checking dental records and soon finds a match. The teeth match those on another victim named Connie Mayers. Hotch and Emily head out immediately to interview the woman. They find her working a nearby florist. She says her attacker was a "control freak" and quite confident. He was also a middle-aged white man.
Back at headquarters, Hotch points out the team is now chasing two alpha males, making it all the harder to break them. Rossi has an idea: Ask William's family if any of daddy's friends have been acting particularly suspicious. Reid, meanwhile, heads online and begins writing to the accomplice directly. Will it draw him out?
Back at the Harris house, Sharon discovers the family sedan vandalized. The neighbors are getting restless. Suddenly, a confident, middle-aged white male appears to comfort the woman. Hmm. Could this friendly neighbor be the man BAU is looking for? Judging from a FLASHBACK we see of the first killing -- in which the man features prominently alongside William -- the answer is a resounding "yes."
The neighbor's name is Stephen Baleman. While Sharon thinks he is a God send in their time of need, Andrea isn't so sure. She remembers the questions about daddy's friends Emily posed. In fact, she remembers them so well she has now grown quite suspicious of Mr. Baleman. We have a feeling Andrea might yet have a part to play in putting her father behind bars for life. We hope so, anyway. There's just 24 minutes left in the hour.
Reid, meanwhile, has made a major discovery within the diary: William and his yet-undiscovered partner met at a children's birthday party. In a FLASHBACK, we see the two future killers creepily bonding over a hamburger. Derek confronts William with the info. "What did you think you were going to do?" he asks. "If you got away from Atlanta, all these little urges were just going to go away?" William grimaces, but remains mum.
Good thing Reid is a genius. He has figured out the words in the diary are actually lyrics to a Tom Petty song. Somehow the song is the signal for the two to meet up. Meaning: the cooperating killers have to live close enough to each other for it to work. They have to literally live within ear shot of each other. Emily remembers the very same song was playing when the team first arrived at the Harris home. But where was it coming from?
Rossi tells Garcia to search for a white male in the Harris subdivision who a). has a family and b). has lived in Florida his whole life. The computer whiz finds seven possible suspects ... but only one lives right next door. Stephen Baleman. Bingo! Andrea, meanwhile, has followed Stephen to the docks. Not a good idea. Stephen finds her sneaking around a boat and corners her. "Are you following me?" he sneers.
Sharon soon discovers her daughter is missing. Perhaps William and his creepy friend were up to something(s), after all.. Hotch brings her to police headquarters, where she confronts William. "Where did Stephen take her?" she asks. William is torn. Confess and save his daughter's life? Or continue to stonewall and lose her?
The next thing we see is William running into an abandoned warehouse to find Andrea tied up. He unties his daughter and confronts Stephen. "We had a deal!" William says. "You took my daughter!" It slowly begins to dawn on Andrea her daddy is a murderer. Just then, the doors to the warehouse swing wide and the team bursts inside with guns drawn. As Andrea weeps, dad and his buddy are cuffed and taken away. "Those two had everything figured out," Derek says. "Except how it would end."
The end.
