Good Idea in this TV Pilot, but only a Mildly Amusing Result
TimeNTide19 July 2008
I saw this 9 minute animated short film on HBO under the title "Brian Shackelford's Porn Editor", and a little perusing of the internet produced the tidbit that this is apparently a pilot for a TV series, with planned episodes of 15 minutes each.

Basic Setup: A young intelligent black man toils as an editor in the hardcore porn industry, although he dreams of working in mainstream films. He is very good at his job, but it's a very frustrating experience because he constantly deals with bosses, clients, and porn actors/actresses who aren't nearly as bright as himself.

I really like the general idea of this short. The porn industry is a nice target for a comedy series, and one that hasn't been mined yet. And as we all know, animated comedy can get away with a lot more things than live action comedy, and premium cable channels can get away with more than other channels, which makes an animated comedy on a premium cable channel the best way to lampoon the porn industry.

I found the comedy in this short to be only mildly amusing despite liking the subject matter. Some of the comedy seems to be geared toward the black audience (and the younger adult audience), so others who fit those demographics might like it more than I. Still, I like the idea enough that I'd like to see a few more episodes make it to air and hopefully the quality will improve. Many great TV shows started with average pilots.

Overall... only average result from a good idea, but I want to see more.
