all over the place

Is a a teen romance? Horror? Comedy? Or just a splodge of all three?

It was set in America but filmed in england with half english actors with dodgy accents. Which added to the oddness I suppose. The acting was fine but the story was very juvenile with over the top performances. I certainly wouldnt pay to see it but if it came up streaming for free and you were a bit drunk then it might make a an OK evening. Otherwise I would avoid as there is much better stuff you could waste your time with.

Needed to be darker and less jokey. Basically a Halloween film for 12 year olds , which is probably the target audience.

Sort of mundane...
paul_haakonsen21 October 2022
Stumbling upon the 2022 horror comedy "The Loneliest Boy in the World" by random chance, reading the synopsis and realizing that this was a horror comedy with zombies, then of course I had to sit down and watch the movie immediately.

Granted, I hadn't heard about this movie from writer Piers Ashworth, Emilio Estevez and Brad Wyman prior to actually sitting down to watch it, so I didn't know what to expect, nor did I know what I was in for. But still, it being a horror comedy with zombies, it had potential for sure.

The storyline told in "The Loneliest Boy in the World" was not overly great. Sure, the movie was watchable, though this is hardly an outstanding or memorable zombie horror comedy. And while I managed to sit through the entire movie, then I doubt that I will ever return to watch it again, simply because the storyline was too plain and mundane.

I wasn't familiar with the cast ensemble in the movie, though I think that the actors and actresses did good enough jobs with the severe limitations imposed on them by an inferior script, plot and character gallery.

Visually then "The Loneliest Boy in the World" was actually good. I liked the special effects, and they were definitely fair for a horror comedy of this caliber.

All in all, then my rating of director Martin Owen's 2022 horror comedy "The Loneliest Boy in the World" lands on a four out of ten stars.

Seems like a wasted great idea
ericanmoreland9 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie looked amazing from the previews, but the actual movie didn't really live up to that. It feels like all the best parts were in the previews. And like another review mentioned, there seems to be some plot holes at the end, especially when the fire starts and the dead family is in the house. Obviously they will find the bodies. It almost seems as though the love interest suspected something was up at the end when she said "they went home, didn't they?" And Oliver says "yeah." But then the movie ends and I guess it's left up to us to interpret. I try to enjoy every movie for what it is and generally am not too critical, but this one had me feeling like something was missing the whole time. Loved the actors, they did a great job, but the storyline could have been better.

Mehhhh

Warning: Spoilers
I get the point and what they were trying to do here but there were too many potholes!!! The scene when the social worker and the guy Julius came over, how did that happen if the family was imaginary??? The social worker saw the dead friend so how was he imagined in Oliver's head? The scene at the restaurant when Oliver's whole dead family went out to eat and met Chole's family, how did that happen if the dead people were supposed to be imaginary??? I would've given a higher rating if this movie made sense but it doesn't!!! The ending shows the family helping Oliver get out of the house before it burns and one of the firemen ask Oliver if there was anyone else in the house in which he says "no". BUT wouldn't they find the bodies in the house afterwards??? Not only that, how on earth did Oliver dig up that many bodies and not get caught by anyone especially those lazy men who worked at the grave yard??? When the movie began, I liked it until Oliver began digging up bodies and not getting caught. That's when I knew that the rest of the movie would be dumb and I was right!!! They could've let the dead people be imaginary in Oliver's head while showing us viewers in the end what was really happening in reality!!! That way it would've made more sense than to end the movie the way they ended it!!! I thought that was going to happen and was surprised that the movie ended so stupidly.

Something Weird just trying to be weird.
Ragnarok-528 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Something Weird just trying to be weird.

Visually, it looks nice. Acting is nice, but the problem is the story. It is okay, but not that impressive. Whoever did the synopsis for this movie makes sound IT A LOT MORE INTERESTING THAN IT IS. What I mean by the title of this is a tv show or movie being weird just to be weird like shows from Adult Swim like Sealab 2049 or that junk mouse one that are just stick figures. I think that is just nonsense. The first 40 minutes is the 4 out of 10. The family makes it a lot better. It is a shame Ben Miller is in this. He is so much better than this garbage. Also, it turning out to be a fantasy of the boy, but how does Ben Miller defend the boy if it is all a delusion????

Wasted Potential!
galaxymoncho21 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This was such a waste! It had potential but they blew it! Even the bullies seemed forced. I really liked the lead actor and they had that guy from the popular After films but was underutilized. The movie is described as a modern fairytale with zombies. I thought it resembled more of a bad dream. Not even a single musical number or duet. Max Harwood was the lead in the musical Everybody's Talking About Jamie. They could have just had Oliver be an out and about gay boi singing to the heavens then finally gets his prayers answered with a new zombie friend. Then with the power of true love the yucky zombie turns into a dashing loaded prince. Mitch introduces Oliver to his loving and supportive folks and they live happily ever after! How's that for fairytale? Oliver first tries to find a friend then ends up getting a best friend, a boyfriend and a new modern family. Now before you can say that's ridiculous! Oliver wakes up and he's back in the asylum and it was all just a dream. But then a very cute male nurse arrives with his meds and it's Mitch! Smile! You have the fantasy mixed with reality and the possibilities are endless. They should have just focused solely on these two instead of those silly side characters and saved a whole lotta money. Young girls are gonna wanna see their beloved bad boy Hardin Scott not a disgusting zombie!

The Freakiest Story in the World
cahidi3 November 2022
When I watched the trailer, I thought that this is a horror comedy about post zombie apocalyptic story. But as it turns out, it's not. It's very different from my initial impression. As someone who holds the importance of principle, I have to point out that this movie doesn't have any. It didn't explain how things were the way they were in it. Like how a group of corpses suddenly got reanimated. Was it the magic of Halloween (Samhain, the Wiccan's New Year) or was it a curse? Anything would suffice. But there was no explanation of how the corpses can come back to life. It's kinda crucial, if you ask me. Cause otherwise people can start making movies without rules, like pigs can fly or kitchen utensils can move by themselves. It's pure chaos and utter non sense. I should've given this movie 4 stars for this HUGE flaw. But seeing how this is a good-feel comedy, I've decided to bump it up by 2 stars.

Cute and fun
BandSAboutMovies19 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Oliver (Max Harwood) is dealing with the sudden death of his mother and when he's released from a psychiatric facility, he's told he has one week to make a friend or go back. All he knows is watching Alf on TV and going to his mother's gravesite to tell her the details of the creature from Melmac and his interactions with the Tanner family.

Yet when he learns of the death of a young boy around his age named Mitch (Hero Fiennes Tiffin). He decides to dig him up, as well as Susanne (Susan Wokoma), a young girl named Mel (Zenobia Williams), Frank (Ben Miller) and even a dog. He brings them home and sets them up on the couch and it makes him happy.

To his surprise, the next morning they've all come back to life and become his family.

Somehow, director Martin Owen (The Intergalactic Adventures of Max Cloud) has taken a story that could have been totally presented as a serial killer origin and turned it into a family comedy with Oliver getting the sitcom mother, father, sister and brother he always wished he had. They teach him life lessons, show him how to talk to girls and how to be happy. Sure, they should be buried but everyone seems fine with their lives.

It has a dark concept -- a lost young man in a world that doesn't understand him that has to make his own world out of corpses -- yet somehow it becomes innocent, candy-colored fun. Who would have thought?

Good boy
kosmasp11 December 2023
No pun intended - it's all in the family and all that. Of course you have to suspend your disbelief with this one. While it seems to be based in reality, it really goes off the rails quite quickly. Try to see this as a fairy tale of sorts. A quite violent one - or at least brutal. Nothing for the sensitive souls for sure.

Good effects and a crazy story. Maybe you identify with the loneliness of the main character (well if you can call it that - he is not "alone" - or is he?) - but of course no one should try anything that is shown is tried at home. If you like weird stuff, you will feel right at home (no pun intended once again). This also has a killer poster art ... just saying.

Colourless despite all the colour
aronharde18 February 2024
The Loneliest Boy in the World is a unique story about a teenage boy who lost his mother in what he calls and accident. After being told to find friends, which is not an easy task for him, he begins to make his own by digging up corpses from recently passed people. He creates his own family of dead bodies in his house. But one day he wakes up to find them more alive than ever...

The movie is colorful and stylish, the actors do a good job portraying their characters, however this movie is riddled with clichés and plot holes. There are several things that are not adding up and the movie feels like it is unsure what it wants to be. It plays out like a kid's movie with horror aspects but has an R-rating and I think the movie should have decided for either one of those. It could have been much darker and more horrifying with more absurd and crazy storytelling, but it chooses to be a mixture and therefore be rather forgettable. [5,1/10]

one of a kind story, with an eyecatching aesthetic
tweektucker21 October 2022
Love the mix of horror and comedy (and some drama), two of my favourite genres. The delivery of satire was perfect. Had a laugh watching it. But what really attracted my eyes was the set. I love the atmosphere of a peaceful 80s house. The details, the set, everything! It was amazing, perfect, and beautifully executed - matched with such an amazing, underrated and talented cast that perfectly played their roles.

Honestly, a must-watch. Besides, Halloween is approaching. This would be a perfect movie for a night spent with family and friends. It sure captures the essence of halloween pretty well.

A charmingly endearing if barely much of a genre film
kannibalcorpsegrinder24 December 2022
After the death of his mother, a lonely teen is taken unable to move on is forced to make friends which allows him to dig up recently-deceased corpses to use as a family but the more he spends with them the more he tries to keep them safe the family of corpses allows him a different life than he wanted.

This was a rather solid effort if suffers somewhat as a genre outing. The film has an entirely effective cheesy atmosphere throughout here that becomes its greatest asset, working a highly effective tone here with the spot-on satire on old-school corny tone at the sight of everything happening here. That comes from the flashbacks to the entirely goofy idea of the creatures coming to life for a fantasy-based series of encounters that maintain a highly enjoyable tone that carries on throughout here. All of the various whimsical situations throughout the second half come off quite nicely as it weaves through the secondary storyline involving the need for a person's independence and sense of family that this one carries throughout here. For all of this, though, the film does stumble as a genuine genre effort as the whole thing flies in the face of more traditional zombie fare. Rather than engage in the more expected flesh-ripping and entrail-munching that would be expected in these kinds of films, the zombies are treated more as a ghostly imaginary friend role that is constantly undecided whether or not others can see them. Despite his insistance that they're living with him and that they're constantly around him, this one tends to go back-and-forth as to their existence since there's nothing about how they come back to life as he just finds them awake one morning with no hint as to how they reanimated. It comes off as the one main flaw with this one, however, so it's not a completely crippling factor as those who can buy the whimsical setup will have a lot to like with this one.

Rated Unrated/R: Violence and Language.

well halloween...
ops-5253518 October 2022
Is just around the corner, filled with dead and creepy skeltonized figures wherever you turn around, and its surtainly the season to be jolly if you like horror comedies like the one i review here, or the more smashier of the matter.

This is all happening in the glorious 80's, when the music whamed you and still do, a lonely boy has to make a friendship or go to the house of insane...

well he makes friends for sure, quite a neckrofilia love story it is, with a sharp script and a naive style of acting that may feel by far gotten by the most horristic part of the audience, but comedywise and as a decent look at the halloween traditions made in the u.s.a. It really follows the thick red line, with pinkish backgrounds and superstyled set decorations and and choice of locations is superbly done.

My acclaim though goes to the makeup and specialeffects departments, the yokes made arent the most advanced nor costliest in the movie business but they work. The script is filled with dead earnest irony and picrasy, well hidden in the acts and words performed by a rather pictorial whacked out acting crew. Playing dead aint easy and they know the acts of stilleben, and doing the most hilarious acts to countermeassure your angsts and other frights in life...

a well made film, perfect playtime, and wellmade and chosen score. The grumpy old man wouldve died from laughter if seen back in the eighties, but it still have that tremendous power to make me laugh (with my spouce) today too. A recommend...

Essential film for the Horror Comedy genre
vdavisa-9695921 December 2022
Not everybody appreciates dark humor and this film is dark humor perfected. Wife and I loved it! Definitely gonna be a buy via Redbox.

My thought is that this film may have grossed out the squeamish which only serves to demonstrate that this type of film is an acquired taste and not for someone looking for typical horror fare.

Perhaps a bit more niche but feel this is on Everything Everywhere All at Once tier for entertainment. The subtle quips and attention to detail are on par. The film also has a aesthetic that reminds me of Stranger Things and it's nostalgia.

People need to stop judging the corpse based on superficial rotten flesh. Not cool guys!
